Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores the stigmas and taboos surrounding youth health centers in Sweden and how this might be hindering young people to visit the youth health centers. It’s exploring how this can be challenged and how the threshold can be lowered by involving the informal support system and bringing the youth health center to the youth arena which allows for a more informal type of support and guidance. The youth health centers in Sweden have been around since 1970 and are a well known and established form of healthcare, yet the majority of the visitors are young women. How come? I’ve been working from the hypothesis that there is a need for more youth to seek help but that they for various reasons don’t manage to make it all the way there. There are many stigmas surrounding topics that the youth health center is dealing with, such as sex, depression, or domestic violence. This is especially true for young people on the edge between childhood and adulthood. Using a human-centered design approach this project has through the involvement of adolescents, midwives and youth workers among others, been exploring challenges and finding opportunities where interaction design can be used to improve the situation for the youth that do not make it to the youth health centers but that want and would benefit from their services. The final design proposal is an ambassadorship, aimed towards adults already part of the informal support system, that will enable youth to feel more empowered to seek help. It is set up to reach the youth in new ways, in an informal manner to bring the solution to the youth and to create a more comfortable space for them to open up within. Part of this is also a service for youth to effortlessly get in contact with the youth health center and to create personal connections to its personnel through link cards and video presentations. These connections are there to prepare the youth and to lower the bar of contact by building trust and humanize the help-seeking process. To make it clear that they are not trying to contact an institution but a person.

Petratos, Anastasia. "An ICT strategy to support a patient-centred approach to diabetes care". Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/14466.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Factors such as poverty, ethnicity, socio-economic status, poor infrastructure and governance, etc., are some of the reasons that effective and proven prevention and treatment interventions for most of the major causes of mortality and morbidity in the developing world continue to fail. Chronic diseases require complex interventions that these countries simply cannot maintain. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that is on the rise worldwide. This disease is a lifestyle disease, which means, that it is brought on by poor health habits. Statistics show that 285 million (6.4%) people aged between 20 and 79 years will be affected by Diabetes in 2010 and a staggering 439 million (7.7%) by 2030. This is a projected growth of 69% in developing countries and 20% in developed countries. The findings from studies conducted from 1993 to 2003 in Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in South Africa, around the health care services for diabetes highlights many challenges. Sadly, the challenges 10 years after that study, are very similar. The conditions of people with Diabetes can be improved through regular monitoring of patients, improvement and monitoring of health care provided, education on healthy lifestyle, as well as education on the importance of adherence to treatment plans for the successful management of the condition. The diabetes endemic in South Africa is exacerbated by the manual functions that are performed in all aspects of monitoring and management of the disease. With the advancements that have been made in ICT and the many apps that already exist for healthcare, it is sensible to state that ICT can assist in the monitoring and management of diabetes. Another factor that is considered is that of patient-centred care. The huge number of people who need acute care and treatment in hospitals and clinics have forced a previously caring environment, to turn into a cold, almost production line affair. The sick wait in long queues and are ushered in and out of the consulting rooms as fast as possible without even as much as a “hallo”. This has left a void in the healthcare delivery to South Africans which should never have been removed in the first place, namely patient-centred care. This means that the patient is at the centre of the treatment and fully involved in the decisions about his/her health. Every patient deserves to be recognised as a human-being and treated with dignity and respect. Treatment plans for long term chronic care patients such as diabetics, should be thoroughly discussed with the patient and they should believe and comit themselves to the treatment plan. These plans are life-long and require dedication and as it is vital that patients are part of decision making and understand fully what they are expected to do. Bearing this in mind, this study has investigated the needs and care plans for people with diabetes. Specialist in the field of diabetes were interviewed and recognised care plans for diabetes such as those from WHO, IDF and SEMSDA were studied. This study also established, that by practising a patient-centred approach the adherence to a treatment plan is likely to be higher. The strategy developed involves the person with diabetes, the healthcare worker and the support structure in the care plan of the diabetic. The use of ICT as part of the solution must consider the patient-centred requirements for using IT so that the people using the strategy are comfortable and not intimidated by the technology. The need to incorporate e-health into governments’ healthcare plans has been growing over the last decade. The GSMA conducted research into mobile health opportunities in South Africa and found that SA now has a penetration of 98% and that this is the ideal medium to address the inaccessibility and inequality of healthcare in SA. The causes identified as playing a major role in the rise in diabetes were identified and it was determined that through the implementation of an ICT strategy for diabetes care, many of these can be addressed. These include the use of technology for, improved monitoring and management, increased diabetes awareness and education, and promotion of healthy lifestyle. The study focuses on the self-management aspect of diabetes and produces a strategy that incorporates various ICT solutions that would assist in the daily aspects of diabetes care, as well as follow a patient-centred approach to diabetes care. This strategy developed in this study does not need any intervention from government as it is driven by the people who have diabetes and their healthcare workers, with the aid of the technology that they currently have on hand.

Toh, Yancy. "Sustaining the use of ICT for student-centred learning : a case study of technology leadership in a Singapore ICT-enriched primary school". Thesis, University of Leicester, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/27830.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Policymakers who have invested in the use of ICT in education are often motivated by its promise to realise pedagogical innovations. However, the unrelenting gap between the promise and performance of ICT has continued to prompt further research into how the affordances of technology can be better harnessed in schools. This three-year qualitative case study hopes to shed light into this matter by looking at the: 1) ecological factors of how an ICT-enriched primary school in Singapore had been using technology to support the pedagogical reform for student-centred learning; 2) conditions that led to its sustained use of technology for this purpose. Complexity theory was employed as the analytical framework for the study. By examining the inter-connectedness of systemic influences governing the in-situ use of ICT in the exemplar school, educational leaders and policymakers can gain a holistic perspective of the factors that may promote or impede technology integration effort. Through the use of interviews, lesson and meeting observations as well as document analysis, the trajectory of the school’s ICT journey was mapped out. The development history surrounding the use of technology for teaching and learning provided a precursor to investigate how the school organisation as the unit of analysis had created favourable conditions leading to the sustainability of ICT-related innovations. Specifically, five themes had emerged: 1) continuous scanning of environment; 2) multi-pronged capacity building efforts; 3) mitigating systemic tensions amongst stakeholders; 4) shared accountability and 5) systematic pacing. Based on the findings to the study, a complexity-informed model for technology leadership, stakeholders’ dynamics and guidelines for policymaking were drawn up. The dissertation concludes with reflections on the use of complexity theory and recommendations for future research.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis was designed to study the challenges faced by the megacities of the world today and to take a deep dive into one of the challenge, to better understand the role of ICT in improving the quality of life of people in a megacity. Even though several challenges exist in the megacities, safety and security are utmost necessary to have a better quality of life. Hence ”Public Safety” becomes a social challenge, which places burdens on the quality of life of people living in megacities and also with a huge scope for ICT opportunities was chosen to study this problem further. Particularly, importance was given to a futuristic approach of how citizens benefiting from ICT tools can influence the overall safety of their cities. The background research on the megacity challenges finally led to addressing the megacity Mumbai, a fast developing city in India, a megacity with lower ICT infrastructure as a subject of this study of the future of ICT solutions in the Public safety domain. During this process user surveys with Mumbai citizens and the ideas gathered through discussions with UX experts in Ericsson led to the generation of a number of concept ideas surrounding public safety. The concepts were created mainly focusing on women safety and empowerment, civic engagement and transparency of the law enforcement process and how ICT can bebeneficial in solving these issues in the future. As a result, personas and scenario visualizations were created to further study the use of ICT solutions. It was clear that information and communication technology solutions could empower citizens with similar interests to organize and engage themselves to be smarter citizens of their cities contributing to an effective, safe and livable city. Furthermore citizen-to-citizen interactions and citizen and government interactions can result in a productive network to take a city forward in terms of fulfilling the basic needs of citizens.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MPhil (Information Science))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: National Statistical offices (NSOs) are the sources of wide ranges of socio-economic, demographic and agricultural data and information that are used to monitor and evaluate development programs and formulate policies. The data generated by NSOs is used as basis for making decisions and also used to assess the extent and causes of poverty. Various stakeholders such as researchers, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the UN, and various NGOs prepare and release research materials and annual reports using data and information obtained from NSOs and line ministries. For example, Deneulin and Shahani state that one of the intentions of the annual Human Development Report (HDR) prepared by the UNDP is “to assess the quality of life of a population and be an advocacy tool for its improvement with a political purpose of raising awareness and generating debate on public issues and concerns which would otherwise not be on the political agenda”1. Based on the different approaches to poverty, different sets of data and information are produced and used for poverty measurement. Mostly, poverty is measured using data obtained from nationally representative household surveys which focus on income and expenditure, ownership, access to and use of some basic services. Another approach uses data on mental satisfaction; still others assume poverty to be multi-dimensional and argue that income alone is not enough. They view poverty as deprivation of basic capabilities due to high rates of mortality, illiteracy, malnourishment, unemployment, ill health, lack of education and social exclusion, etc2. The quality of data and information (such as integrity, methodological soundness, accuracy and reliability, serviceability and accessibility) generated by data-producingagencies therefore needs to be preserved and improved in order to obtain meaningful results from the measurement of poverty in any of the approaches and to satisfy the growing data quality demands of stakeholders. Loshin states that “strategic decisions based on untrustworthy information are likely to result in poor decisions”3. This study focuses on the role played by national statistical offices in poverty reduction in general. It examines the various activities, players, interactions, and ICTs used at the various stages of the statistical process in the Ethiopian Central Statistical Agency (CSA) to generate poverty-related data and information and how the quality of this data can be preserved and improved. The purpose of this research is therefore to identify poverty related data quality problems with respect to the IMF’s DQAF and assess where in the statistical process specific types of ICTs can improve data quality. For this reason interpretive case study method with the researcher as participant observer was adopted to study how poverty related data and information is produced. It was found out that some of the data quality problems can be addressed using appropriate ICTs with the availability of reliable power infrastructures.

Abstract (sommario):
Our cities have been continually growing at an uncontrolled rate leading to the problem of trafficcongestion, which has discernable effects on all the aspects of sustainability, be it social, environmental or economical. This continual shift of increasing size of centre and decreasingsize of periphery poses huge sustainability challenge of meeting the consumption demands. Wepresently face the most unprecedented times in terms of the pace at which our natural resourcesare getting consumed. It is clear that replenishing some of these resources is totally out ofquestion. On the other side of the coin, the advances of human technology have provided itsgreatest gift of information & communication technology (ICT). Today we have access to datafrom any point of the world to anywhere. There is a growing need to use this data andinformation with a holistic view to build more Intelligent Transport Systems. In our paper wediscuss how the advent of ICT can have an impact on bringing a sustainable transportationsystem. The work is divided in two folds, by first understanding the direct role of ICT intransport sustainability and then observing the direct correlation between usage of ICT andtravel demand. The problems of traffic congestion and its solutions like congestion pricing haveexisted in practice since ages; the perspective which we add to it is the role of ICT in making itbetter. The greater perspective that is being researched here is at an absolute fundamental leveland takes us to the question if and how ICT can work on root level challenges, like findingmethods to have a better traceability without compromising on privacy, changing driverbehaviour patterns and stopping the expansion of centre & contraction of periphery.

Al-Marwani, Reem Salah. "Implementing change : an example of ICT integration in an English language centre (foundation year), Saudi Arabia". Thesis, University of Southampton, 2018. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/427680/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Integration of ICT is a crucial element in developing teaching, learning and educational outcomes. Saudi Arabia has developed an ICT plan to promote the use of technology in higher education institutions. Thus, the Ministry of Higher Education in SA has developed many national projects (Jusur VLE, NCeLDL, Saudi Repository, Excellence Award in E-learning) to encourage universities to adopt ICT in everyday instruction. On the contrary, despite the above-mentioned projects, many studies have shown the less than effective adoption of ICT in education. Accordingly, this study sheds light on the actual implementation of technology in a Saudi University from EFL teachers', administrators', and policy makers' perspectives. An effective integration of technology requires holistic and comprehensive investigation of teachers', administrators' and policy makers' experiences. The aim of this study is to investigate teachers' attitudes, utilization and overall experience regarding ICT adoption in language teaching. Teachers' attitudes, utilization and experience mirror and reflect the actual integration and highlight the limitations as well. Additionally, factors that affect teachers' use of ICT are discussed. In addition, the study examines administrators', and policy makers' point of views as well. The context of the study is the English language centre (ELC) at Taibah University. To investigate ICT implementation, a qualitative institutional case study approach is adopted. The main tool of data collection is a set of interviews. These interviews are triangulated with other methods e.g. classroom observations, focus groups, document reviews and field notes. The findings show less than effective integration. Many factors that impede/enable teachers' integration of ICT are presented. Finally, the participants in the research project hope for comprehensive improvements in education i.e. change in ICT integration strategies. Additionally, a change in the curriculum, teachers' roles and pedagogical practices are recommended.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This study developed through a process of narrowing down the objectives from a wider EdQual project that was concerned with implementing basic education quality in low income countries, Rwanda included. It aimed at investigating a shift in mathematics teachers' practices towards more learner-centred classrooms, using ICT as a tool for learning. Research findings from the literature show that there are many challenges to developing a learner-centred approach to teaching. These challenges accrue from various sources and relate to the overall national context in which the teaching and learning occurs. This study was based on the view that ICT can be used to support learner-centred classroom interactions. In this approach the teacher plays more of a facilitator's role than an instructional role, thus supporting students' mathematical exploration. The overall research consisted of two studies, namely, Study 1 and Study 2. Observations from lessons taught by EdQual teacher partners within Study I showed that the use of ICT alone did not provoke teachers to shift from teacher-centred practices towards a more learner-centred approach to the teaching of mathematics. Based on these findings, participatory collaborative action-oriented inquiry was chosen as the research methodology in Study 2. Through teaching classes and communication between two teachers working in the same school and myself, we gave meaning to our practices. Data collected included researcher's diaries, video/audio-recorded lessons, and interviews and discussions with participant teachers. Depth analysis carried out using joint action theory in didactics of mathematics revealed that in contrast to Study 1, teachers in Study 2 did not present mathematical knowledge to students at the beginning of the lesson; rather they involved them in exploiting ICT to engage with the targeted knowledge. The overall study shows that an ICT-enabled participatory professional approach can support teachers to shift from teacher-centred practices towards a more learner-centred approach to the teaching of mathematics. However the thesis recognises that the question remains about how such a participatory model could be scaled up in Rwanda.

Livingstone, Stephen John. "Reconstructing ice dynamics in the central sector of the last British-Irish Ice Sheet". Thesis, Durham University, 2010. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/195/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The central sector (NW England and Scottish borders) of the last British-Irish Ice Sheet exhibits a palimpsest glacial geological and geomorphological signature characteristic of multi-phase ice flow and ice-marginal fluctuations. Despite its influential position at the heart of the British-Irish Ice Sheet, sourced from major ice dispersal centres of the northern Pennines, Lake District and Southern Uplands, and drained via fast-flowing outlets such as the Irish Sea Ice Stream, the region remains poorly constrained, both temporally and in terms of ice-flow dynamics. The principle goal of this thesis was therefore to reconstruct the palaeoglaciology of the central sector of the British-Irish Ice Sheet during the last glacial cycle, focusing on: (1) ice-flow dynamics with respect to palaeo-ice divides, ice-dispersal centres, flow trajectories and flow phasing; (2) the relative chronology of ice flows during advance and decay of the ice sheet; and (3) evidence for ice stream activity either within or sourced from the study area. The thesis adopted a dual approach involving both geomorphological mapping and sedimentological analysis. A 5 m resolution NEXTMap DEM was used to map over 9,000 individual landforms including subglacial lineations, hummocky terrain, moraines, meltwater channels, eskers and glaciofluvial sediment accumulations. Subglacial lineations were subdivided into discrete flow sets demarcating distinctive flow phases, and a relative chronology produced from cross-cutting relationships. Thirteen field sites, concentrated in the Solway Lowlands, supported by data collected from over 200 boreholes enabled detailed stratigraphic and sedimentological analysis to be carried out. This included stratigraphic logging, the collection of macrofabrics, particle size and geochemistry analysis on till matrixes, clast lithological counts, varve analysis and microstructural (thin sections) data. Results from this study have demonstrated that the central sector of the ice sheet was characterised by repeated ice-flow switches, initiation and termination of ice streams, drawdown into ice streams, repeated ice-marginal fluctuations (the Scottish and Blackhall Wood Re-advances) and the production of large volumes of meltwater, often impounded to form ice-dammed lakes. Six main stages of ice flow have been recognised in the region, of which stage I is thought to indicate the period of maximum ice expansion, while stages II-VI record the deglacial history. A pre-stage I event is also discussed and can be reconciled with the initial expansion of ice out of upland dispersal centres. Stage I was characterised by ice flowing eastwards across the country through major topographic lows of the Stainmore and Tyne gaps. The Tyne Gap was occupied by a topographic ice stream, which was heavily influenced by the changing dominances of both Lake District and Southern Upland ice-dispersal centres. Migration of ice divides back towards upland dispersal centres during stage II resulted in the flow of ice through the Stainmore Gap being cut-off, while the northern edge of the Tyne Gap ice stream was breached by a SE ice flow down the N Tyne Valley. Despite the maintenance of the Irish Sea Ice Stream off the western coast of Cumbria throughout stage III, the Tyne Gap and Solway Lowlands underwent widespread deglaciation. Meltwater from the Tyne Gap was routed into Glacial-Lake Wear via a major proglacial drainage network in the South Tyne Valley, while the natural basin of the Solway Lowlands also ponded-up (Glacial-Lake Blackhall Wood) as drainage became impeded by the Irish Sea Ice Stream. The overall pattern of retreat was reversed during the Blackhall Wood Re-advance (stage IV), during which ice was vigorously drawn down into the Irish Sea Ice Stream. Stage V was characterised by the continued retreat of ice out of the central sector of the British-Irish Ice Sheet; with the vast amounts of meltwater generated impounded in ice-marginal lake systems (Glacial-Lake Carlisle), or routed through meltwater channel networks or evolving glacier karst (Brampton kame belt). The landforms of the Brampton kame belt can be reconciled with ice stagnation on the reverse slope of the Tyne Gap, and is thought to have formed one component of a much larger, time-transgressive drainage network involving the Pennine escarpment and Tyne Gap meltwater channel systems. The final recognised stage in the glacial history of the region was the Scottish Re-advance, a brief incursion of ice, sourced from the Southern Uplands, onto the fringe of the Solway Lowlands. A large glacial lake is identified to have formed at the ice front, dammed against ice in the Irish Sea basin and delimited by a large deltaic complex at Holme St. Cuthbert.

Abstract (sommario):
The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in second language training is offered today as a panacea in attaining communication objectives.Therfore, in the second language (English for francophones and French for anglophones) teaching/learning process teachers in the Yaoundé bilingual linguistic pilot training center (in Cameroon) use arteacts such as audio equipements, video and online ressources to present the information ; adopting framework and support modalities in a view to reduce cognitive overloading due to decipling activity. These techno pedagogic tools with cognitive potentials (Karsenti and al, 2007) play and mediatisation role (Peraya, 1999). In such a context learners habe to call for their senses(auditive, visual) and develop strategies in oder to decipler, transcribe, and transform information into operational knowledge that could offert hem language skills (writting, speaking, listening, readind the second language). Our work aims at analysing the teaching (pedagogic or didactic), and learning activities (cognitive) and bring out psychoaffective and cognitive process put in place to achieve a communication competence in a multimedia tolls usage context.Data collection methodology center around the observation of daily classroom practices and two questionnaires for learners and teachers. With such tools quantitative and qualitative data have been collected and treated. We can keep in mind that in the teaching process, teachers put in place inciting style to attaind their curricular objectives. Moreover mobilised artefacts such as the official textbook (essential tool), related audio/video extracts as well as other ressources from the Internet are complementary and facilitate language skills acquisition, namely listening, speaking and/or writting.Nevertheless it has been noted that the use of audio-visual digital extrats learners face some phonological difficulties. It is therefore necessary to recommend that teachers should adapt teaching aids to learners socio-anthropological environment especially in lower classes to reduce cognitive charge. These work has permit us to put in evidence a variety of didactic approach which permitted learners to mobilize the scheme of actions (cognitive process) and transform information, in vision to mastering language skills.Key works : Teaching/learning process, activities, artefacts, language skills, cognitive and didactic analysis

Over the last 15 years, many South African universities have established Writing Centres as places to provide academic writing support to their students. The services offered are mostly free and voluntary and as such, there are no strict regulations regarding who should use them, and how often they should visit. Consequently, writing centres especially the newly established ones struggle to monitor the progress of the students they have helped once they have left the place, or even reach students in the places where they continue to write in order to offer additional support to students, which could positively influence their writing self-efficacy. This design-based research case study reports on an intervention run by one such writing centre where social media, specifically Facebook due to its popularity among students, was explored as a technology that can be adopted to reach and offer help to students beyond the confines of its physical space.

Thesis (M. Tech. (Information Technology)) -- Central University of technology, Free State, 2013
This study compared the usability of three Information and Communication Technology (ICT) network programs in a learning environment. The researcher wanted to establish which program was most adequate from a usability perspective among second-year Information Technology (IT) students at the Central University of Technology (CUT), Free State. The Software Usability Measurement Inventory (SUMI) testing technique can measure software quality from a user perspective. The technique is supported by an extensive reference database to measure a software product’s quality in use and is embedded in an effective analysis and reporting tool called SUMI scorer (SUMISCO). SUMI was applied in a controlled laboratory environment where second-year IT students of the CUT, utilized SUMI as part of their networking subject, System Software 1 (SPG1), to evaluate each of the three ICT network programs. The results, strengths and weaknesses, as well as usability improvements, as identified by SUMISCO, are discussed to determine the best ICT network program from a usability perspective according to SPG1 students.

McCarthy, David John. "Late Quaternary ice-ocean interactions in central West Greenland". Thesis, Durham University, 2011. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/868/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
A greater knowledge of the interactions between the Greenland Ice Sheet and climate is critical to understanding the possible impacts of future global warming, including ice sheet contribution to global sea-level rise and perturbations to ocean circulation. Recent acceleration, thinning and retreat of major tidewater glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica during the past two decades demonstrate the potential for ice sheets to respond to climate change much faster than previously assumed. One approach to understanding the role of atmospheric and oceanic warming to ice sheet dynamics is to investigate how ice sheets responded to past periods of climate change. This thesis uses benthic foraminifera as a proxy to reconstruct past changes in the temperature of the relatively warm West Greenland Current, to investigate the possible influence of ocean warming on ice sheet dynamics during the initial marine-based deglaciation phase, and throughout the Holocene, when the ice was positioned close to the present margin. This thesis finds that the marine-based ice sheet in central West Greenland collapsed rapidly due to a combination of high relative sea-level and ice sheet thinning due to climatic warming. Foraminiferal evidence does not support a major influence of ocean forcing on initial deglaciation. However, Holocene changes in the relative temperature of the West Greenland Current may have had a more significant influence on ice stream dynamics following the marine-based ice retreat, when outlet glaciers were positioned within coastal fjords. Changes in the relative temperature of the West Greenland Current are determined “upstream” by wider scale changes in the North Atlantic region.

Abstract (sommario):
The healthcare sector is becoming one of the biggest industries and employers in the world aswell as one of the most problematic costs for national economies. Many countries also face anincrease of chronic diseases as a result of aging societies and unhealthy lifestyles, which willcause a high demand on healthcare services to become more efficient. A common conclusion within healthcare research is that healthcare systems will not be able to cope with these problems unless they shift to a more patient centered focus, and there is a growing realisation that patient centered healthcare may be the most cost-effective way to improve health outcomes for the growing number of patients with chronic conditions.A promising tool to achieve more patient centered care systems involves the use of information-and communication technology (ICT). However, even though scientific research about the use of ICT within healthcare has shown positive results, a major breakthrough is still lacking and there is still a challenge in learning how to best use ICT to improve outcomes for patients. This report will further investigate this field and present a qualitative research on how ICT can be used to create a more patient centered care system, and what effects this will have on patients with chronic conditions. The results in this study derived from in-depth interviews with a wide range of different actors within the healthcare industry. It was found that there are many areas of care that are not patient centered today, and that different ICT systems can be used to help improve these areas. It was also found that which kind of ICT that is best suited, and what effects it will have on patients, will vary depending on which stage of care the patient is at.

Abstract (sommario):
This study endeavors to investigate the negative environmental impacts of the prevailing ICT design approaches and to explore some potential remedies for ICT design unsustainability from environmental and corporate sustainability perspectives. More specifically, it aims to spotlight key environmental issues related to ICT design, including resource depletion; GHG emissions resulting from energy-intensive consumption; toxic waste disposal; and hazardous chemicals use; and also to shed light on how alternative design solutions can be devised based on environmental sustainability principles to achieve the goals of sustainable technologies. The study highlights the relationship between ICT design and sustainability and how they can symbiotically affect one another. To achieve the aim of this study, an examination was performed through an extensive literature review covering empirical, theoretical, and critical scholarship. The study draws on a variety of sources to survey the negative environmental impacts of the current mainstream ICT design approach and review the potential remedies for unsustainability of ICT design. For theory, central themes were selected for review given the synergy and integration between them as to the topic under investigation. They include: design issues; design science; design research framework for ICT; sustainability; corporate sustainability; and design and sustainability. Findings highlight the unsustainability of the current mainstream ICT design approach. Key environmental issues for consideration include: resource depletion through extracting huge amounts of material and scarce elements; energy-intensive consumption and GHG emissions, especially from ICT use phase; toxic waste disposal; and hazardous substances use. Potential remedies for ICT design unsustainability include dematerialization as an effective strategy to minimize resources depletion, de-carbonization to cut energy consumption through using efficient energy required over life cycle and renewable energy; recyclability through design with life cycle thinking (LCT) and extending ICT equipment’s operational life through reuse; mitigating hazardous chemicals through green design - low or non-noxious/less hazardous products. As to solving data center dilemma, design solutions vary from hardware and software to technological improvements and adjustments. Furthermore, corporate sustainability can be a strategic model for ICT sector to respond to environmental issues, including those associated with unsustainable ICT design. In the same vein, through adopting corporate sustainability, ICT-enabled organizations can rationalize energy usage to reduce GHG emissions, and thereby alleviating global warming. This study provides a novel approach to sustainable ICT design, highlighting unsustainability of its current mainstream practices. Review of the literature makes an advance on extant reviews of the literature by highlighting the symbiotic relationship between ICT design and environmental sustainability from both research and practice perspectives. This study adds to the body of knowledge and previous endeavours in research of ICT and sustainability. Overall, it endeavours to present contributions and avenues for further theoretical and empirical research and development.

Abstract (sommario):
Force and centre of pressure (COP) were measured during a forward skating task on ice using a standard hockey skate and a modified skate with an altered tendon guard and eyelet configuration which allows for increased dorsiflexion and plantarflexion. The objective of this study was to determine if those skate design changes would result in biomechanical changes in the skaters during forward skating. Both left and right skates were instrumented with a calibrated strain gauge force transducer system to measure forces and with an insole system used to measure the COP during the forward skating task. The modified skate showed a reduction of 14.5-24.3 mm in total anterior-posterior COP excursion (p < .05). This suggests that the modified skate changes the biomechanics of the skaters. However, a full body kinematic study might be needed in order to study the exact biomechanical changes.

Abstract (sommario):
The market of IOT devices continues to grow at a rapid speed as well as constrained wireless sensor networks. Today, the main network paradigm is host centric where a users have to specify which host they want to receive their data from. Information-centric networking is a new paradigm for the future internet, which is based on named data instead of named hosts. With ICN, a user needs to send a request for a perticular data in order to retrieve it. When sent, any participant in the network, router or server, containing the data will respond to the request. In order to achieve low latency between data creation and its consumption, as well as being able to follow data which is sequentially produced at a fixed rate, an algortihm was developed. This algortihm calculates and determines when to send the next interest message towards the sensor. It uses a ‘one time subscription’ approach to send its interest message in advance of the creation of the data, thereby enabling a low latency from data creation to consumption. The result of this algorithm shows that a consumer can retrieve the data with minimum latency from its creation by the sensor over an extended period of time, without using a publish/subscribe system such as MQTT or similar which pushes their data towards their consumers. The performance evaluation carried out which analysed the Content Centric Network application on the sensor shows that the application has little impact on the overall round trip time in the network. Based on the results, this thesis concluded that the ICN paradigm, together with a ’one-time subscription’ model, can be a suitable option for communication within the IoT domain where consumers ask for sequentially produced data.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis investigates how making content caching and forwarding latency-aware can improve data delivery performance in Information-Centric Networks (ICN). We introduce a new mechanism that leverages retrieval time observations to decide whether to store an object in a network cache, based on the expected delivery time improvement. We demonstrate that our distributed latency-aware caching mechanism, LAC+, outperforms state of the art proposals and results in a reduction of the content mean delivery time and standard deviation of LRU caches by up to 60%, along with a fast convergence to these figures. In a second phase, we conjointly optimize the caching function and the multipath request forwarding strategies. To this purpose, we introduce the mixed forwarding strategy LB-Perf, directing the most popular content towards the same next hops to foster egress caches convergence, while load-balancing the others. Third, we address ICN fairness to contents. We show that traditional ICN caching, which favors the most popular objects, does not prevent the network from being globally fair, content-wise. The incidence of our findings comforts the ICN community momentum to improve LFU cache management policy and its approximations. We demonstrate that in-network caching leads to content-wise fair network capacity sharing as long as bandwidth sharing is content-wise fair. Abstract (sommario):
Information-Centric Networking (ICN) embraces a family of network architectures rethinking Internet communication principles around named-data. After several years of research and the emergence of a few popular proposals, the idea to replace TCP/IP with data-centric networking remains a subject of debate. ICN advantages have been advocated in the context of 5G networks for the support of highly mobile, multi-access/source and latency minimal patterns of communications. However, large-scale testing and insertion in operational networks are yet to happen, likely due to the lack of a clear incremental deployment strategy. The aim of this thesis is to propose and evaluate effective solutions for deploying ICN. Firstly, we propose Hybrid-ICN (hICN), an ICN integration inside IP (rather that over/ under/ in place of) that has the ambition to trade-off no ICN architectural principles. By reusing existing packet formats, hICN brings innovation inside the IP stack, requiring minimal software upgrades and guaranteeing transparent interconnection with existing IP networks. Secondly, the thesis focuses on the problem of deploying ICN at the network endpoints, namely at the end host, by designing a transport framework and a socket API that can be used in several ICN architectures such as NDN, CCN and hICN. The framework fosters cutting-edge technologies aiming at providing performance and efficiency to applications. An extensive benchmarking at the end of the chapter will present the performance of the transport framework. Subsequently, the benefits that hICN network and transport services can bring to applications will be assessed, by considering two main use cases: HTTP and WebRTC. The former represents the de-facto protocol of the Web, while the latter is a new emerging technology increasingly adopted for real time services. At last, the thesis proposes a solution for programmatically deploying, configuring and managing ICN networks and applications: Virtualized ICN (vICN), a programmable unified framework for network configuration and management that uses recent progresses in resource isolation and virtualization techniques. It offers a single, flexible and scalable platform to serve different purposes, in particular the real deployments of ICN in existing IP networks

Abstract (sommario):
A key challenge in Information Centric Networking (ICN) is to develop cache units (also called Content Store - CS) that meet three requirements: large storage space, fast operation, and affordable cost. The so-called HCS (Hierarchical Content Store) is a promising approach to satisfy these requirements jointly. It explores the correlation between content requests to predict future demands. Theoretically, this idea would enable proactively content transfers from a relatively large but slow cache area (Layer 2 - L2) to a faster but smaller cache area (Layer 1 - L1). Thereby, it would be possible to increase the throughput and size of CS in one order of magnitude, while keeping the cost. However, the development of HCS introduces several practical challenges. HCS requires a careful coupling of L2 and L1 memory levels considering their transfer rates and sizes. This requirement depends on both hardware specifications (e.g., read rate L2, use of multiple physical SSD in parallel, bus speed, etc.), and software aspects (e.g., the SSD controller, memory management, etc.). In this context, this thesis presents two main contributions. First, we propose an architecture for overcoming the HCS bottlenecks by parallelizing multiple HCS. In summary, the proposed scheme overcomes racing condition related challenges through deterministic partitioning of content requests among multiple threads. Second, we propose a methodology to investigate the development of HCS exploiting emulation techniques and analytical modeling jointly. The proposed methodology offers advantages over prototyping and simulation-based methods. We emulate the L2 to enable the investigation of a variety of boundary scenarios that are richer (regarding both hardware and software aspects) than would be possible through prototyping (considering current technologies). Moreover, the emulation employs real code from a prototype for the other components of the HCS (e.g., L1, layers management and API) to provide more realistic results than would be obtained through simulation.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
Recent work suggests an emerging new paradigm for the Scandinavian ice sheet (SIS); one of a dynamically fluctuating ice sheet. This doctoral research project explicitly examines the history and dynamics of the SIS at four sites within Sweden and Norway, and provides results covering different time periods of glacial history. Two relatively new dating techniques are used to constrain the ice sheet history: the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating technique and the terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide (TCN) exposure dating technique. OSL dating of interstadial sediments in central Sweden and central Norway indicate ice-free conditions during times when it was previously inferred the sites were occupied by the SIS. Specifically, the SIS was absent or restricted to the mountains for at least part of Marine Isotope Stage 3 around 52 to 36 kyr ago. Inland portions of Norway were ice-free during part of the Last Glacial Maximum around 25 to 20 kyr ago. Consistent TCN exposure ages of boulders from the Vimmerby moraine in southern Sweden, and their compatibility with previous estimates for the timing of deglaciation based on radiocarbon dating and varve chronology, indicate that the southern margin of the SIS was at the Vimmerby moraine ~14 kyr ago. In central Sweden, consistent TCN ages for boulders on the summit of Mt. Åreskutan and for the earlier deglaciated highest elevation moraine related to the SIS in Sweden agree with previous estimates for the timing of deglaciation around 10 ka ago. These results indicate rapid decay of the SIS during deglaciation. Unusually old radiocarbon ages of tree remains previously studied from Mt. Åreskutan are rejected on the basis of incompatibility with consistent TCN ages for deglaciation, and incompatibility with established paleoecological and paleoglaciological reconstructions. Altogether this research conducted in different areas, covering different time periods, and using comparative geochronological methods demonstrates that the SIS was highly dynamic and sensitive to environmental change.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2011.
The use of ICT to enhance the quality of student learning is generally observable in higher education institutions. The adoption of ICT policy for education in Namibia in 1996 has profoundly encouraged the use of ICT to enhance student learning at teachers training colleges, in particular Caprivi College of Education. Although ICT has positioned itself in higher education, its implementation to enhance student learning has been received with mixed feelings, attitudes and perceptions among students. The use of ICT in relation to learning paradigm, collaborative and/or co-operative learning, deep learning approach and assessment seem to be problematic among students and may affect their learning. Issues related to access to ICT, ICT skills and support (technical and service) contribute to students’ negative perceptions towards the use of ICT in learning. The purpose of this study was to investigate students’ perceptions of the possible effect of ICT application on student learning at Caprivi College of Education in order to determine the ICT skills and learning strategies student teachers use to enhance their learning. The research strategy for this study was a quantitative survey. Quantitative data was obtained by administering closed-ended questionnaires to third-year student teachers at Caprivi College of Education. The study concludes that student teachers overwhelmingly perceive the use of ICT to enhance their learning in various ways.

Abstract (sommario):
This work aims to study the behavior of the western margin of the Greenland Ice Sheet during a period of pronounced ice retreat roughly 10,000 years ago, after the end of the last glacial period. It explores the efficiency of subglacial erosion, the spatial dynamics of ice retreat, and the rates of ice retreat. To address these questions, I use the radionuclides 10Be and 26Al, which form in rocks due to the bombardment of cosmic rays, only after the rocks have been exposed from underneath retreating ice. These nuclides can be used as a geologic dating technique to explore exposure history. Before applying this dating technique to address geological questions, it was critical to first perform methodological development. My work in the University of Vermont‘s new Cosmogenic Nuclide Laboratory served to improve the precision and efficiency of the pre-existing laboratory methods. New methodological advances ensured that samples from Greenland, which contained only low concentrations of 10Be and 26Al, could be used to yield meaningful results about ice behavior. Cosmogenic nuclide dating was applied at two sites along the ice sheet margin in central-western Greenland. At both of these sites, I collected paired bedrock and boulder samples in a transect normal to and outside of the present-day ice sheet margin. Samples were collected from a variety of elevations at numerous locations along the transects, thus providing three-dimensional coverage of the field area. After isolating the mineral quartz from the rocks, and isolating the elements Be and Al from the quartz, isotopic analysis was performed using accelerator mass spectrometry to quantify the relative abundances of the radionuclides against their respective stable isotopes. The southern study site, Ilulissat, is located on the western coast of Greenland at a latitude of 69N. Much previous work has been conducted here due to the presence of one of the largest ice streams in the northern hemisphere, Jakobshavn Isbræ. My work in Ilulissat demonstrated that subglacial erosion rates were high during previous glacial periods, efficiently sculpting and eroding the landscape. Ice retreat across the land surface began around 10,300 years ago, and the ice sheet retreated behind its present-day margin about 7,600 years ago. Ice retreat occurred at a rate of about 100 meters per year. My work in this area suggests that retreat in the large ice stream set the pace and timing for retreat of the neighboring ice sheet margin. The northern site, Upernavik, is located on the western coast of Greenland at a latitude of 73N. Little research has been conducted here in the past. Unlike in Ilulissat, my work here shows that the ice sheet did not efficiently erode the landscape, especially at high elevations, during previous glacial periods. This is likely because the ice was thinner, and therefore had a colder base, than the ice in Ilulissat. My work suggests that ice cover was lost from this area very rapidly, likely at rates of about 170 meters per year, in a single episode around 11,300 years ago. Comparison between the two study sites reveals that ice characteristics can vary appreciably over relatively small distances.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction. The current age structure in Sweden is changing. At the same time, life expectancy is increasing in many parts of the world. This will lead to greater demands of accessible care resources and its application. Well implemented communication is paramount when the healthcare system is as information-intensive as it is. For maintenance of good healthcare, demands will be set on new kinds of services. With eHealth, information and healthpromotion through communication-based technology, healthcare can be performed efficiently with secure output within the healthcare sector. Aim. The aim of this study was to examine challanges for health professionals in the process of patient care through care at a distance. Method. An empirical study of six (6) people was conducted by semistructured interviews. Result. Indicated result show a result of the need of eHealth within the current use of healthcare, and that the technology can be of comparable quality to physical meetings. However, technical solutions should be seen as a complement within healthcare, and not as a substitute of physical interaction. Conclusion. eHealth services is not something that will become relevant within a timeperiod of ten to fifteen years. It is a currently usable service that can be established to be of comparable quality to the person-centered care the nursing profession is striving for.
Indroduktion.

The thermodynamic ice model of Thomdike (1992) is coupled to a one dimensional, two layer ocean entrapment model to study the effect of mixed layer dynamics on ice growth and the variation in the ocean heat flux into the ice due to mixed layer entrapment. Model simulations show (i) the existence of a negative feedback between the ice growth and the mixed layer entrainment; and (ii) the underlying ocean salinity has a greater effect on the ocean heat flux than does variations in the underlying ocean temperature. Model simulations for a variety of surface forcing and initial conditions demonstrate the need to include mixed layer dynamics for realistic ice prediction in the Arctic.

Abstract (sommario):
This study identifies Late Quaternary glacial ice-flow direction in east-central Ellesmere Island, N.W.T., by the study of its composition and its relation to bedrock sources. The spatial distribution of five till types suggests a hypothesis which attempts to reconcile the Innuitian Ice Sheet model of Blake with the Franklin Ice Complex model of England. Glaciers draining from ice sheets in northern Ellesmere Island and Greenland filled Kane Basin and flowed southward toward Smith Sound. When this southward-flowing ice reached the bottleneck at Smith Sound (40 km wide), it overrode the adjacent landmasses of Pim Island and Cape Herschel and forced Buchanan Bay ice southward through the channel that is now occupied by Rice Strait. Southward-flowing ice continued to drain towards Baffin Bay, overriding the coastal areas of Nares Strait at Wade Point and Cape Isabella. The results presented here partially support the Innuitian ice sheet hypothesis, but do not negate the Franklin Ice Complex model. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Abstract (sommario):
During the last decade, immigration operations have drastically increased in the United States. Between 2009 and 2015, the Obama administration deported a record high of 2.4 million unauthorized immigrants (Homeland Security, 2016). Due to the amplified number of migrants being deported, the number of individuals in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention centers has also increased. Consequently, this phenomenon has raised concerns regarding undocumented migrants’ access to medical services in these facilities. This research project was conducted in order to assess the quality of medical and health care services in ICE detention centers in the state of Arizona. It also examined whether the ICE operational manuals and detention standards on medical care were being followed and were consistent with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The findings indicated that ICE was not compliant with a major portion of their Performance-Based National Detention Standards on medical care and thus, were violating the basic human rights of undocumented immigrants in detention centers as stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
