Abstract (sommario):
Immunoglobulins are the potent effector proteins of the humoral immune response. In the course of evolution, immunoglobulins have formed extremely diverse types of molecular structures with antigen-recognizing, antigen-binding, and effector functions embedded in a single molecule. Polysaccharide moiety of immunoglobulins plays the essential role in immunoglobulin functioning. There is growing evidence that the carbohydrate composition of immunoglobulin-linked glycans, and especially their terminal sialic acid residues, provide a key effect on the effector functions of immunoglobulins. Abstract. We have reported that some anti-thyroid peroxidase antibodies inhibit the activity of thyroid peroxidase in vitro. These thyroid peroxidase activity-inhibiting immunoglobulins seem to inhibit thyroid function in some patients, but the relationship between thyroid peroxidase activity-inhibiting immunoglobulins and thyroid function is not simple. We designed this study to explore this lack of a simple relationship. We stained immunoglobulin G deposits by immunofluorescence staining or the peroxidase-antiperoxidase method, and stained endogenous thyroid peroxidase activity by enzyme his

Immunoglobulins play a fundamental role in the protection of the human body against internal and external threats. They also contribute to the immune system homeostasis and maintenance of self-tolerance. Hypogammaglobulinemia is occasionally encountered in routine clinical practice by rheumatologists. Low levels of immunoglobulins can occur as primary or secondary issues and may predispose patients to various forms of infection. ABSTRACT The levels of antigen-specific antibodies (Abs) and immunoglobulins in the cervical mucus of women vary with the menstrual cycle; the highest levels occur during menses, and the lowest occur during the periovulatory period. The rhesus macaque is a widely used animal model of female genital tract immunity. We sought to determine whether rhesus macaques have a cyclical pattern of changing cervicovaginal Ab and immunoglobulin levels that is similar to that of the human female. This study examined the relationship of the stages of the menstrual cycle to genital mucosal and systemic immuno

Abstract (sommario):
Epithelial cells and bacteria were sampled from the tonsillar surfaces of seven patients (six males, one female; median age 16 years, range 10 to 21 years) suffering from acute infectious mononucleosis with concomitant pharyngotonsillitis. By using gold-labelled antiserum to human IgG and secretory IgA (sIgA), micro-organisms on the tonsillar surfaces coated with these immunoglobulins could be identified by tracing the gold particles in the transmission electron microscope. The patients harboured significantly fewer bacteria coated with immunoglobulins than did healthy controls. More bacteria

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Suppression of uninvolved immunoglobulins is a common finding in MM patients. The prognostic importance of this finding has not been extensively studied in patients with MM and current data come from older series which included limited number of patients. Recent publications indicated that a novel immunoassay, which measures serum concentrations of the Ig heavy chain/light chain subsets IgGκ, IgGλ, IgAκ and IgAλ and which also identifies suppression of the uninvolved (polyclonal) Ig of the same isotype as the tumor was of prognostic significance for progression free survival in a sele
