<p>This thesis presents the application of some of the NMR methods in studying host-guest complexes, mainly in solution. The general focus of the work is on investigating the reorientational dynamics of some small molecules that are bound inside cavities of larger moieties. In the current work, these moieties belong to two groups: cryptophanes and cyclodextrins. Depending on the structure of the cavities, properties of the guest molecules and the formed complexes vary. Chloroform and dichloromethane are in slow exchange between the cage-like cavity of the cryptophanes and the solvent, on the c

Inclusion compounds can be defined as those in which one type of molecule is able to enclose another molecule (usually smaller) within its structure, leaving the bonding systems of both components unchanged. The molecular network and the enclosed species are usually referred to as the "host" and "guest" respectively. The ability of four hydroxyl-containing molecules to form inclusion compounds was studied. Each of these molecules has a tetrahedral carbon or silicon atom bonded to an hydroxyl group and shielded by two or three aromatic moieties. The bulkiness of these molecules prevents them fr

Such compounds typically exhibit static and/or dynamic disorder, which precludes the use of diffraction-based techniques to obtain detailed structural information. Hence, due to its ability to probe local environments, solid- state NMR can be used to provide information which would otherwise be inaccessible. However, the dynamic nature of the guest molecules within inclusion compounds can yield unusual results for routinely applied experiments, such as cross polarisation, heteronuclear dipolar decoup

Abstract (sommario):
The work described in this thesis focuses on the urea inclusion compounds of α, ω-dibromo-n-alkanes: Br(CH2)[sub]nBr/urea, where n=7-10. The structural and dynamic properties of the host and guest have been studied using complementary techniques. Photographic single crystal x-ray diffraction shows that, in the regions of three- dimensional guest molecular ordering, there is a well-defined offset, Δg, along the channel axis, c, between guest molecules in adjacent channels. Δg is exactly one-third of the periodic repeat distance along c of the basic guest structure: this represents a new mode of

Abstract (sommario):
