Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Context.—There are numerous customers for pathology departmental Web sites, including pathology department staff, clinical staff, residency applicants, job seekers, and other individuals outside the department seeking department information. Despite the increasing importance of departmental Web sites as a means of distributing information, no analysis has been done to date of the content and usage of pathology department Web sites. Objective.—In this study, we analyzed pathology department Web sites to examine the elements present on each site and to evaluate the use of search technology on these sites. Further, we examined the usage patterns of our own departmental Internet and intranet Web sites to better understand the users of pathology Web sites. Design.—We reviewed selected departmental pathology Web sites and analyzed their content and functionality. Our institution's departmental pathology Web sites were modified to enable detailed information to be stored regarding users and usage patterns, and that information was analyzed. Results.—We demonstrate considerable heterogeneity in departmental Web sites with many sites lacking basic content and search features. In addition, we demonstrate that increasing the traffic of a department's informational Web sites may result in reduced phone inquiries to the laboratory. We propose recommendations for pathology department Web sites to maximize promotion of a department's mission. Conclusions.—A departmental pathology Web site is an essential communication tool for all pathology departments, and attention to the users and content of the site can have operational impact.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Objective – This study aimed to identify assessment opportunities and stakeholder connections in an emerging technologies department. Such departments are often overlooked by traditional assessment measures because they do not appear to provide direct support for student learning. Methods – The study consisted of a content analysis of departmental records and of weekly activity journals which were completed by staff in the Emerging Technologies and Services department in a U.S. academic library. The findings were supported by interviews with team members to provide richer data. An evidence based framework was used to identify stakeholder interactions where impactful evidence might be gathered to support decision-making and to communicate value. Results – The study identified a lack of available assessable evidence with some types of interaction, outreach activity, and responsibilities of staff being under-reported in departmental documentation. A modified logic model was developed to further identify assessment opportunities and reporting processes. Conclusion – The authors conclude that an evidence based practice research approach offers an engaging and illuminative framework to identify department alignment to strategic initiatives and learning goals. In order to provide a more complete picture of library impact and value, new and robust methods of assessing library technology departments must be developed and employed.

Globally, the energy sector is fast nearing a tipping point of no return, transitioning from fossil fuel to renewable energy. Business is turning to the IT department to leverage technology that will reduce organisational wide production and operational cost in a fast changing economy. The business expects the IT department to be innovative and build new IT competencies for a rapid response to the transition towards renewable energy. This study contributes new knowledge regarding the impact of management theory and approaches on the successful implementation of IT in the African Oil and Gas industry. The research shows that capabilities such as innovation and people competencies are growing in importance while IT leadership is becoming a critical role in supporting and delivering on the business objectives as enabler and transformational agent of business. Capabilities such as systems thinking, business acumen and interpersonal skills are key IT management competencies for transformation innovation leadership. Knowing the business needs, the IT department can provide integrated solutions that support the complete business value chain without exposing the business to a rigid IT structure. Remaining competitive, business-driven IT innovation is a vehicle for business to meet new realities. The research followed a multistage mixed-model design using the African Oil and Gas industry as case study.

Abstract (sommario):
The management of information technology (IT) must be organized efficiently and most of all effectively in order to support the organization's business processes optimally. The IT department must focus more on its customers and the services provided to support their business processes, thus enabling customers to gain competitive advantages from IT. Therefore the IT department should be treated as a separate business unit with its own characteristic services and business processes. The complexity of the IT infrastructure must be reduced by breaking it down into pieces according to the type of function its components perform. Each part must be treated as a separate unit, with services, relations and responsibilities in its own right. All this requires a major reorganization of the IT department. This paper presents the first results in the development of a practical method for organizing the IT management function and for effecting the inevitable organizational changes.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT In several organizations, business workgroups autonomously implement information technology (IT) outside the purview of the IT department. Shadow IT, evolving as a type of workaround from nontransparent and unapproved end-user computing (EUC), is a term used to refer to this phenomenon, which challenges norms relative to IT controllability. This report describes shadow IT based on case studies of three companies and investigates its management. In 62 percent of cases, companies decided to reengineer detected instances or reallocate related subtasks to their IT department. Considerations of risks and transaction cost economics with regard to specificity, uncertainty, and scope explain these actions and the resulting coordination of IT responsibilities between the business workgroups and IT departments. This turns shadow IT into controlled business-managed IT activities and enhances EUC management. The results contribute to the governance of IT task responsibilities and provide a way to formalize the role of workarounds in business workgroups.

Abstract (sommario):
The tight connection which occurs between entertainment and education has originated what is defined edutainment which can be considered as a continuous and innovative brain-training, which stimulates, in an interactive way, the capacity to combine attention and motivation to explore and learn. The role of games in learning is a common topic in research. The various games linked to the edutainment mechanism, in particular, have been analyzed to understand in what way and to which extent they can facilitate study, development of memory, attention, motivation and other cognitive processes as well as spatial abilities. The aim is the definition of “edutainment” as a branch of e-learning which promotes learning process in school, extra-school and didactic field in general, in a playful way, through multimedia applications. The idea of encouraging the integration of game, technology and learning is new and at the same time complex for its educational aims. At international level, United States Department of Education, with the cooperation of educational agents and teachers, recently developed a statistical table of the results reached by an important project for the creation of modules for the learning through Internet. Shown below there are information about the results of this project that were used to be transferred on a national level to start and implement the same project. The interactive technologies, really because they turn the users into actors, they can involve and entertain reducing the gap between the teacher/communicator, standing out as leader of knowledge, and the pupil receiving the information.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact that cyberattacks are having on organizations and the growing need these create for H.R. departments to collaborate more closely with IT departments. Design/methodology/approach Current thinking regarding managing cybersecurity suggests that it should be managed holistically, i.e. by the human resources (HR) department and information technology (IT) department working together more closely. This sees the IT department providing the IT security tools and the HR department providing the appropriate processes and procedures that need to be followed, as well as creating a necessarily more “vigilant” culture. Findings Several practical steps are outlined that will help HR departments protect themselves against a data breach. Originality/value Cyberthreats are amongst the top threats to UK business, according to the government. Managing cybersecurity has long been left almost solely to the technology experts. The continuing number of high-profile data breaches suggests that cybersecurity tools alone will not stop information leaking from companies. There is an important role for HR teams in encouraging and enforcing a more proactive, vigilant culture amongst the workforce and working more closely with IT to improve security practices.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyze the value of a strong decision-making information technology (IT) influence within organizations. Although research and managerial practice has repeatedly shown the importance of IT departments within firms and has commented on the influence of IT departments on business performance, prior research has still no evidence about the value of a strong decision-making IT influence yet. Design/methodology/approach To prove the influence of the IT department within the company, this study identifies and operationalizes a formative construct determined by four main specifics of the IT department: IT department size, IT department value assessment, IT experience of the top management and degree of digitization. A questionnaire was used to collect the data of 124 experts from companies that could be assigned mainly to the sectors manufacturing, trade as well as information and communication. The data were analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Further, partial least squares structural equation model (PLS-SEM) was used to test the proposed model. Findings The results show that both investments in the size of the IT department as well as in top managers with IT experience, and a high degree of digitization in a company positively influence the role of the IT department. It also shows that a higher general appreciation of the IT department goes hand in hand with a higher influence of IT in the company. The measures are significant as companies, which do have an influential IT department, actually have higher monetary as well as non-monetary business performances. Practical implications The study is aimed equally at science and practice, as it provides information on the extent to which more importance should be attached to IT management in the future and what organizational adjustments need to be made. Originality/value Despite the ongoing discussions on the importance of IT management for business performance, no existing studies have delivered evidence that there is a significant direct link between the decision-making influence of IT and the extent of corporate performance. The present work therefore has two objectives. The theoretical goal is to clarify the impact of the IT department on business performance and to identify the factors that make up an influential IT department. The practical objective of the research is to provide recommendations on how firms could establish or expand the IT department.

Abstract (sommario):
A current approach to quality management at an industrial enterprise implies a complex automation of all its businessprocesses. The most significant element of the quality management system is a process of discrepancy control. That is why as a top-priority step in the creation of an integrated quality management system is an automation of a discrepancy process control. A basic role in this process is carried out by a service of quality management which reveals discrepancies and a department of technologists defining their reasons and specifying a complex of correcting measures. A classical approach to the activities of a quality control department (QCD) used quite often until now consists in the fixation of discrepancies as a report of the QCD and their archiving till an urgent moment (outer claims coming, occurrences of discrepancies in further manufacturing). Within the bounds of the integrated quality management system there is developed an automated system “DC” (Discrepancy Control) the basic purposes of which consist in the following: a record of manufacturing discrepancies, a record of correcting measures to reveal discrepancies, a control of correcting measures performed, a record of discrepancy reasons, an analysis of discrepancy occurrences, an estimate of function quality of enterprise services. This automated system is introduced in the Joint-Stock Company - Karachevsky Plant “Electrodetail”

Abstract (sommario):
The failure of many organisations over the years has led to a greater need for transparency and accountability. The Corporate Governance Framework, as developed by the King report, is the overarching framework that ensures that the board of directors are responsible for the governance of an organisation. The King III report implies that the board should also be responsible for IT governance because IT is a crucial and costly component that enables the achievement of organisational objectives. From several IT Governance frameworks that exist, the Bank of Namibia, through its integration initiative with the SADC Central Banks, has adopted COBIT 4.1 as an IT governance framework. COBIT 4.1 has several processes that directly aid the alignment of IT to business. A study of the implementation approach of the framework at the Bank and its effectiveness in ensuring the alignment of IT to the business functions was conducted. This study used a quantitative research methodological approach. A questionnaire was developed and was completed using a stratified sample of 35 individuals chosen from a target population comprised of the IT department, executive management and IT compliance champions in the Bank. The findings from the study revealed that a good understanding of what corporate and IT governance entails was evident in the Bank. Ninety-seven percent of the respondents indicated that IT is a key strategic tool that can be leveraged to achieve business goals. In the age of changing technology, the study revealed that the IT department is innovative and stays abreast with new technologies and trends. User awareness was not adequate and the study further revealed that only 49% of the respondents were involved in the IT governance project. The study revealed that top management supported the project. The study also reflected the positive role of IT auditing in the project. It was also noted that IT service delivery has improved and that benchmarking initiatives, as a result of the project, can lead to significant improvements in IT operations. The study revealed that the IT department understands business needs through a process facilitated by their annual departmental visits. The results from the departmental visits are well prioritised projects and IT projects that are tailored to support business goals. An IT steering committee, which was formulated, ensures that executive management is involved in key IT decisions and the reports on IT governance to the board and ensures that awareness is raised on that platform. It is recommended that an IT user awareness programme be established and an investment framework should also be established. It is recommended that the Bank adopts the COBIT 5 framework, which is a more holistic approach that focuses on governance as well as allowing for greater alignment between IT and business functions.

Abstract (sommario):
State government has been moving from manual and paper-based processes to digital services. However, digital divide, declining trust in technology, and low IT/IS adoption rates by public sector employees are important challenges for successful delivery of e-government services to citizens. Previous studies in the area of IT/IS adoption and e-government have mainly focused on citizens. This paper examines IT/IS adoption by employees rather than citizens and the focus is on non-market environment and state government agencies. A research model has been proposed based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and technology acceptance model (TAM) which has been extended to include digital divide related constructs and trust in technology. To test the proposed model, a survey was conducted among early adopters of Office 365 at Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) in Springfield and Chicago. The paper contributes to research on IT/IS adoption in public sector. The findings also provide insightful design and practical implications for successful IT/IS deployment in public sector.
