Testo completoMotivation is important for people, both in work-life and life in general. Motivation can mainly be divided into intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, which depends on the intentions behind the individual’s actions. An individual with intrinsic motivation performs an activity because it is based on interest and satisfaction. Actions based on extrinsic motivation are founded on something other than the activity itself for example economic reward. The aim of the study was to compare possible differences between male and female university teachers regarding intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. The study also examined whether a type of motivation was valued as important and at the same time fulfilled. The study had a quantative approach and the design of the questions in the questionnaire was based on Deci and Ryan’s theory of self-determination (SDT). The study included 296 university teachers and the response rate was 47 %. The results of the study showed that the women valued all but one of the motivational factors significantly higher than the men. Thereby the motivational factor Economic reward was the only one where the differences were not significant. The results also showed that the participants who valued a motivational factor as important and at the same time were fulfilled to a high extent were in a large majority. Very few of the participants valued a type of motivational factor as important and also were fulfilled to a low extent.

Testo completoThis study will put focus on and try to explain the change in intrinsic motivation for teleworkers. For this the job characteristics model is used to explain and identify different characteristics in the work itself, that could impact the intrinsic motivation with the teleworking employees. The study will further be conducted through a qualitative perspective with interviews from these employees. Through the interviews, the empirical data showed that most of our respondents experienced a positive change in their daily routine. Where the biggest advantage with teleworker was the more flexible scheduling of the workdays. On the other hand, the negative side that was brought up by most of the respondents showed a decreased socialization between the employees. In the analysis where the empirical data was analyzed through the theoretical model, there was evidence that suggested that the increase of flexibility with telework, positively affected the model’s autonomy aspect, which then should increase the intrinsic motivation. There was also strong evidence in the empirical data for the social aspects which was not found as a part of the theoretical model itself. As a conclusion it was found that there were some positive changes due to telework for the intrinsic motivation, but that the subject requires further studies to come to a generalizable conclusion.

Testo completoPurpose: The purpose of the study is to examine how employees intrinsic and extrinsic motivation are affected by their managers perceived leadership style. Problematization: Previous research shows contradictory results. No previous study has examined transformative, transactional and laissez-faire leadership and its effect on intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Theory: The study has its foundation in transformational, transactional and laissez-faire leadership theories. Furthermore, motivation is divided into intrinsic and extrinsic motivation with support from Self determination theory. Method: The study has a quantitative approach. A survey was sent to a large mining company in Sweden; their managers and employees got to answer it. They answered what type of leadership style their closest manager had and what motivated the respondent. The result was analysed using exploratory factor analysis and Spearman's correlation coefficient was used to determine the hypothesis.Result: When the result was analysed the study got support for transactional and transformational leadership but not laissez-faire leadership. Motivation got divided into 7 different factors, salary and status, career focused intrinsically motivated, not financially intrinsically motivated, competition and complex work tasks, follow the current, career focused extrinsically motivated and unsure and worried. The result showed a positive significant correlation between both transformational and transactional leadership to intrinsic motivation. Furthermore, a significant correlation was found between transactional leadership and extrinsic motivation. The study also found a negative significant result between transactional leadership and the motivational factor follow the current. Furthermore, the study found negative correlations between both transformational and transactional leadership and the motivational factor competition and complex work tasks.

Testo completoProblem: High productivity is crucial for today's organizations in the pursuit of increased competitiveness. At the same time, research on motivation shows that individuals who experience intrinsic motivation are more productive. A work system that claims to increase efficiency and lead to a motivated workforce is lean. An industry where lean has taken hold is warehousing which faces constant demands for increased productivity and optimized production flows. Research on lean and its impact on employees, however, is contradictory. This is because lean is not a unitary concept but one that includes all aspects related to eliminating waste. Because of this, research seems to lack consensus on the effects of lean on employees. Motivation in combination with lean is also a relatively new area of research. Above all, there are few empirical studies on employees' perception of intrinsic motivation in lean based warehouse operations. Purpose:The purpose of the study is to provide knowledge and understanding if warehouse stock pickers in a lean-based warehouse operation experience intrinsic motivation. Furthermore, the study aims to identify how the studied warehouse operation are working with lean to highlight the impact of lean on intrinsic motivation. Method: The study is based on an interpretive social science perspective with a qualitative approach. To obtain knowledge and understanding regarding a specific case, we applied a case study research design using semi-structured interviews. The research approach is iterative where the study has fluctuated between theory and empirics until the final results. Furthermore, a thematic analysis was used for data processing Conclusion: The study revealed that the case company is working with lean according to the theoretical description of the concept. The results showed that employees feel meaningfulness in their work but that the work was perceived to contain a low degree of autonomy and feedback. The study therefore showed an ambiguous picture of the employees perceived intrinsic motivation. We could conclude that lean has both positive and negative effects on employees' intrinsic motivation. The positive effects consisted of a greater degree of participation and autonomy, improved social relationships, self-esteem and skills. The negative effects that could be identified was higher stress due to performance requirements and increased work intensity. We could thus conclude that lean had an immediate positive impact on employees' intrinsic motivation.

Testo completoMaintaining one’s employability throughout their lives is becoming increasingly important in today's labor market, which is in constant change. The increasing demands placed on the individual regarding one´s employability can be a reason why the number of students at Swedish colleges is steadily increasing. But the question is how important is the factor employability for students' student motivation. Motivation can be divided into two categories, internal and external motivation (Deci & Ryan, 2000). In a more detailed division, six motivational factors are distinguished; to know, toward accomplishment, to experience stimulation as well as identified, introjected and external regulation (Vallerand et al., 1992). The purpose of this study was to investigate which motivational factors affect an individual's choice to study at college. We have also investigated whether the motivation appears different depending on the respondents' gender and age. The empirical data was collected via a web survey that was based on Academic Motivation Scale (Vallerand et al., 1992), where the participants estimated in what extent they considered each claim to have motivated them in their choice to start studying. Even though the margin was small our result showed that external motivational factors had the greatest impact on the choice to study. Identified was the motivational variable ranked highest, which means to do something because one has decided to do it although it is not fun. That the activity is seen as necessary or because one believes that doing an activity will be useful in future. We found no significant differences between the sexes. However, our analysis showed that there were significant differences in motivation, but these were related to the respondents' age.

Testo completoSwedish high school students are moving less and less and 32% of boys and only 14% of girls reach WHO's recommended dose of 60 minutes of physical activity per day. Studies show that up to 80% of the day is spent sitting still, and today this is linked to many common diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, obesity and diabetes. This study has investigated the possibility, through product design, to increase the motivation for physical activity during sports.User-centered design and qualitative methods are used to compile empirical data into a unified picture of why high school students do not participate in sports and what is needed to create inner motivation in high school students. The study's theoretical framework also touched on sports medicine and, above all, social psychology within motivation theory and semantics. The study shows that it is of great importance that the students are given space to feel confident in their ability, belonging in the group to feel secure and to be able to decide for themselves their own development. The end concept is a training mat that is divided into eight different training zones. This enables individualized training, invites to collaborative exercises in the group and is level adapted. This study has internal relevance for product designers by contributing insight into how to integrate product design and ACD in pedagogy to increase internal motivation. The study has external relevance as the result can hopefully improve the health of individuals. Otherwise, the consequence may be increased mental and physical ill health in society. The product proposal and the knowledge contribution can thus contribute with insight into how product design can be used to increase students' self-esteem by raising awareness of the factors that can influence their own development towards a healthier life.

Testo completoMotivation as a process involves everything that drives humans forward and causes them to act in a certain direction. What primarily drive people to act are their needs. Humans feel comfortable when needs are met and discomfort when not satisfied. In order for a student to start, continue and complete university studies, a certain amount of motivation is required. Motivation may be of either internal or external character. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate to what extent the students at Luleå University of Technology considered themselves motivated for their studies. Another purpose was to study the amount of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation among these students. Data was collected using a web survey where the participants were asked to estimate their total motivation, intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Estimates were then compared between participants belonging in philosophical versus technical faculty and between students in the beginning versus the end of their education. The material was then analyzed using SPSS. The performance pattern indicates that the students felt motivated to their studies. The feeling of motivation was seen as stable. The results showed that students had a week tendency to estimate their intrinsic motivation a bit higher than extrinsic motivation. Results showed that faculty affiliation or beginning / end of education had no significant effect on estimates of total motivation, intrinsic motivation or extrinsic motivation.

Testo completoA presumption for meeting the demands of the labor market for young workers is to have work motivation. Work motivation is a generic label for factors that influence a person's way of acting in different situations and can be divided into internal and external motivation. Internal motivation means a sense of free will where the individual acts on the basis of interest in creating satisfaction in the workplace. External motivation means creating satisfaction through external consequences. The purpose of this study is to study work motivation with focus on internal and external motivational factors among young adults aged 20-25 years based on a qualitative approach. It is also of interest to study if there is any difference between gender. The material was collected through ten semi-structured interviews and analyzed on the basis of a thematic analysis. The result shows that responsibility, skills development and feedback are internal motivational factors that influence young adults' work motivation. The external motivating factors are rewards, social relationships and clear guidelines. There is also no major difference between men and women in terms of work motivation. In addition, the results show that young adults believe that a job in the end should not be regarded as a job, but as a fun activity in order to achieve maximum work motivation.

Testo completoThe aim of this study was to investigate whether student’s intrinsic motivation (IM) and extrinsic motivation (EM) differs depending on which university program the individual has chosen. Previous studies have shown that there is a difference between the level of motivation among different college students. 46 Swedish university students from the Music Production Program and 39 Swedish students at the same university from the Civil Econom Program participated in the study. The results showed that the Civil Economic students had significant differences between motivational types. The majority of Civil economic students estimated higher values in EM compared to IM. The Civil Economic students even showed higher values in EM compared to students from the Music Production program. The values in IM and EM were equally distributed within students from the Music Production program and the Amotivation proved to be low among all students. The grade and the gender of the participants were covariates that were controlled in the study. The participants grade and gender showed to have correlations that were significant with the students’ level of IM and EM. Conclusions from the results are that students from the Music Production program are likely to have goals based on personal interest and external rewards while the majority of civil Economic students only seems to be motivated by external rewards.

Testo completoThe purpose of this study is aimed at investigating the prevalence of various study motivation types used by students at Uppsala University. This study culminated into two questions. Firstly, What is it that motivates students to study and does there appear to be any difference regarding intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors? And secondly, Are there any differences in the creation of motivation due to the background factors gender and age? To approach the problem we used a quantitative research method, in the form of a survey. We distributed questionnaires in public areas at Uppsala university, which resulted in seventy responses. The theoretical framework used to interpret the collected data was Deci & Ryan's and Ahls definitions regarding intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. This research study also builds upon earlier studies on motivation, which address a number of theories explaining how students create and form motivation for their studies. Owing to the fact that the study and the questionaire were made from a convenience sampling which resulted in a selection with limited numbers, the study will therefore not make any generalizations, however it will highlight tendencies which may raise interest for further research. The results of the study show that the greatest motivational factor is an Extrinct Motivation factor in the form of "Future professional and career opportunities". Additionally the results also show that an intrinsic motivation factor in the form of “Interest in the subject itself” also strongly motivate students. Furthermore, the study indicates that age and gender effect how students are motivated during their studies. The results also display that younger students for instance, are more motivated by their classmates, while from a gender point of wiew men are more motivated by group studies.

Key words:
