Activation of the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR) following stress in the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) is an important mechanism by which obesity results in insulin resistance and type II diabetes. We uncovered a role for the adaptor protein Nck in modulating the UPR. Lipasin, a hormone found in the liver and adipose tissue, is involved in glucose homeostasis and lipid metabolism. Lipasin levels in plasma are controlled by food and rise after glucose consumption. Because plasma glucose and insulin levels both rise after eating, we wanted to know if the rise in plasma insulin sensitivity, or both, is to blame for the rise in lipasin levels.
