Abstract (sommario):
This paper describes an experimental and theoretical study of the feasibility of using fiber reinforcement to produce lightweight low-cost elastomeric isolators for application to housing, schools and other public buildings in highly seismic areas of the developing world. The theoretical analysis covers the mechanical characteristics of multi-layer elastomeric isolation bearings where the reinforcing elements, normally steel plates, are replaced by a fiber reinforcement. The fiber in the fiber-reinforced isolator, in contrast to the steel in the conventional isolator (which is assumed to be rigid both in extension and flexure), is assumed to be flexible in extension, but completely without flexure rigidity. This leads to an extension of the theoretical analysis on which the design of steel-reinforced isolators is which accommodates the stretching of the fiber-reinforcement. Several examples of isolators in the form of long strips were tested at the Earthquake Engineering Research Center Laboratory. The tested isolators had significantly large shape factors, large enough that for conventional isolators the effects of material compressibility would need to be included. The theoretical analysis is extended to include compressibility and the competing influences of reinforcement flexibility and compressibility are studied. The theoretical analysis suggests and the test results confirm that it is possible to produce a fiber-reinforced strip isolator that matches the behavior of a steel-reinforced isolator. The fiber-reinforced isolator is significantly lighter and can be made by a much less labor-intensive manufacturing process. The advantage of the strip isolator is that it can be easily used in buildings with masonry walls. The intention of this research is to provide a low-cost lightweight isolation system for housing and public buildings in developing countries.

Abstract (sommario):
Pre-acting control in shock/impact isolation systems is studied. With pre-acting control, the isolation system begins to respond to an impact before this impact has been applied to the base. The limiting performance of the isolator with pre-acting control is investigated for a single-degree-of-freedom system subject to an instantaneous impact. The isolation performance index is defined as the maximum of the absolute value of the displacement of the object to be isolated relative to the base, provided that the magnitude of the control force transmitted to the object does not exceed a prescribed value. It is shown that there is a substantial advantage in the use of pre-acting isolators over isolators without pre-action. Particular attention is given to a pre-acting isolator based on a passive elastic element (a spring) separating the object to be protected from the base. An example illustrates the calculation of the design parameters of such an isolator.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents a comparative seismic performance assessment of super-elastic-friction base isolator (S-FBI) systems in improving the response of bridges under near-field earthquakes. The S-FBI system consists of a steel-Teflon sliding bearing and a superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA) device. The other isolation systems considered here are lead rubber bearing (LRB), friction pendulum system (FPS), and resilient-friction base isolator (R-FBI). Each isolation system is designed to provide the same isolation period and characteristic strength. Nonlinear time-history analyses of an isolated bridge are performed to compare the performance of various isolation systems. The results indicate that the S-FBI system shows superior performance in reducing deck displacement response and effectively limits permanent bearing deformation, whereas residual deformations are present for the other isolation systems in some cases. It is also observed that the LRB system has the largest deck drifts while the FPS system and R-FBI system produce the smallest peak deck acceleration and base shear.

Abstract (sommario):
A comparative study of performance of various isolation systems for liquid storage tanks is investigated under real earthquake ground motions. The various base isolation systems considered are the laminated rubber bearings (with and without lead core) and sliding isolation systems (with and without restoring force). The isolated liquid storage tank is idealized with three-degrees-of-freedom associated with convective, impulsive and rigid mass under uni-directional earthquake excitation. Since the force-deformation behaviour of the isolation systems is non-linear, as a result, the equations of motion are solved numerically by step-by-step method. In order to measure the effectiveness of the isolation systems, the seismic response of the isolated liquid storage tanks is compared with the corresponding response of non-isolated tanks. Further, the effectiveness of the isolation is also explored for wide range of practical liquid storage tanks considering the influence of tank aspect ratio. It is observed that the isolation systems are quite effective in attenuating the earthquake acceleration transmitted to the tank, which reduces the design seismic forces significantly. Further, it is also found that the sliding type isolation systems are more effective in controlling the response of liquid storage tanks in comparison to the elastomeric bearings. Among the various sliding systems, the resilient-friction base isolator is found to be most effective for seismic isolation of the tanks.

Abstract (sommario):
The isolating system absorbs part of the earthquake energy before transferring it to the structure, by shifting the natural period of the isolated structure. This period shift results in a reduction in the inertial forces. It is clear that the effects of near-fault (NF) ground motions with large velocity pulses can bring the seismic isolation devices to critical working conditions. In this study, two three-dimensional RC buildings with the heights of 9.0m and 21.0m which are supported by Triple Friction Pendulum Bearing (TFPB) isolators are idealized. Various TFPB configurations are selected for isolation systems. There are also viscous dampers to limit the excess deformation of isolators. Nonlinear time history analyses were performed by using OpenSees to study the influence of supplemental dampers on structural responses such as isolator displacements and maximum drifts under ten near-fault ground motion records. The results show noticeable reduction in isolator displacement when using dampers. However, maximum drift rises considerablely. Moreover by increasing the period range or reducing the damping ratio of isolation system, maximum driftreduces but the displacement of isolator increases.

Abstract (sommario):
As a safety-critical issue in complex mobile systems, isolation requires two or more mobile objects not to appear in the same place simultaneously. To ensure such isolation, a scheduling policy is needed to control and coordinate the movement of mobile objects. Unfortunately, existing task scheduling theories fails in providing effective solutions, because it is hardly possible to decompose a complex mobile system into multiple independent tasks. To solve this problem, a more fine-grained event scheduling is proposed in this paper to generate scheduling policies which can ensure the isolation of mobile objects. After defining event scheduling based on event-based formal models called dependency structures, a new event scheduling theory for mobile systems is developed accordingly. Then an algorithm for generating an event scheduling policy is proposed to implement the required isolation. Simulation experiments are conducted to prove the result of our theoretical analysis and show the effectiveness and scalability of the approach.

Abstract (sommario):
In view of the excellent performance of a single quasi-zero-stiffness (QZS) device in vibration attenuation, this paper presents a study on a vibration isolation floating raft system constructed with a double-layer QZS mechanism. A QZS device is a typical nonlinear isolator, hence the floating raft system is a coupled highly nonlinear isolation system. To understand the behaviors and its performance in vibration attenuation, an analytical approach is developed to describe the characteristics including the mathematical relationship between amplitude–frequency, force transmissibility, and the effects of the mass ratio and damping ratios on attenuation performance. The outcomes show that the two-degree-of-freedom QZS–QZS system is superior for vibration isolation when compared to the traditional linear system and the two other types of QZS systems. The effective vibration isolation frequency region of the QZS–QZS system is expanded to the low-frequency region by 72%. The QZS system is sensitive to the damping ratio, which decreases the resonance peak significantly. The mass ratio is a crucial design parameter in low-frequency vibration isolation design.

Abstract The technical requirements for the determination of physical parameters of vibration isolating material have not been standardized in Europe and Poland yet, which significantly hinders the ability to compare vibration isolating materials offered on the market. Therefore, there is a need for establishing a norm that could be applied both for the determination of the physico-mechanical properties of elastic vibration isolation elements in rail transport for domestic and foreign producers as well as in their selection for application in a specific vibration isolation system. The paper presents a proposal to standardize the methodology of the estimation of vibration isolation materials physical parameters authorized for use in vibration isolation systems used in rail transport. Methodology for measuring the physico-mechanical parameters of vibration isolating material presented in the paper forms uniform test procedure developed based on a fragmentary norms for flexible materials testing. The use of the proposed research methodology enables the creation of a unified database of elastic materials which parameters will be easy to compare, and choice between them will become easier for designers of vibration isolation systems used in rail transport.

Abstract (sommario):
The article provides examples of labour social isolations. Multiple professions in which social isolation is present are compared, and differences are revealed both in the process of isolation itself and the influence of other psychogenic factors. The question was raised about the complexity of classifying labour social isolation. The definition of social exclusion is given. Teams that face social isolation were considered. The main differences were identified, both in psychogenic factors and in the isolation itself, of each profession. The fact of the existing social isolation in the collectives of specialized railroad cars was proved by conducting empirical studies in these collectives. The “Results” section presents a table that reflects the main psychogenic factors in the professions considered. Based on the data, a classification of labour social isolation was made. The classification of isolation types was represented by two groups: deprivation social isolation, rather acute isolation; irritable social isolation, less problematic but more common social isolation. The possibility of creating a universal “isolation passport” is discussed. All factors of social isolation of the group can be combined into three components: external factors; organizational and production factors; socio-psychological factors.

Abstract (sommario):
The protection of structures and machines from ground vibrations is a deeply felt and widely studied problem. These vibrations are typically generated by the operation of machines, vehicular traffic, seismic events, shocks, explosions, etc., and are generally characterized by frequencies that are not known a priori, making the use of passive isolation systems problematic. Just away from the source, ground vibrations have a predominantly horizontal component. To meet the conflicting requirements of passive isolation systems, which should have higher stiffness when the structure is at rest and lower stiffness when the ground forces it to vibrate, active or semi-active isolation systems can be adopted. In the following article, the possibility of adopting a hybrid isolator is evaluated; it consists of shear-stressed elastomeric pads coupled with an electromagnetic actuator; the latter consists of three coils, two of which are connected to the ground and the other one to the body to be isolated. This kind of isolator has the same flexibility and adaptability as the active ones, with the advantage of ensuring its functioning even in the absence of an external energy source. Its flexibility is due to the presence of a smart element that allows one to tune the characteristics of the isolator to consider the instantaneous isolation requirements. The proposed solution allows one to modify the isolation system’s characteristics in a sufficiently wide range of displacements equal to that defined by the maximum allowed deformation of the elastomeric pads. This paper reports the description of the isolation system and an analytical model to describe its restoring force; then, an experimental setup is adopted to identify the parameters of the analytic model; finally, several simulations are reported to compare the analytical and the experimental trends of the restoring force and to characterize the isolator.

Abstract As science keeps evolving over time, new solutions are being put forward for reducing structural damage. One such solution is the use of seismic isolation systems. Seismic isolation systems reduce the response of structures to the force of earthquakes by reducing the input (force) acceleration when the natural period of the structure increases. Therefore, the use of seismic isolation systems is recommended in the analysis of diverse structures. This study was carried out on seismically isolated buildings with 8, 10, and 12 regular steel floors, modeled by a non-linear isolator in two-, or three-second periods. The differences in data and the responses of the buildings were compared with fixed-base buildings with 8, 10, and 12 floors.

Abstract (sommario):
The issues of safety and posthazard functionality of structures under multihazard scenarios are some of the significant challenges in the current dynamic and rapidly growing urban environment. In this paper, multistory base-isolated buildings are investigated under the independent multihazard scenario of earthquake and blast-induced ground motion (BIGM). Multistory building models equipped with five different types of isolation systems, namely, the laminated rubber bearing (LRB), lead-rubber bearing (N-Z system), pure friction (PF) system, friction pendulum system (FPS), and resilient-friction base isolator (R-FBI) are assessed under bidirectional multihazard excitations. The suitability of the isolation systems and their key parameters in protecting multistory buildings is evaluated. Furthermore, the influence of the superstructure characteristics, such as the superstructure damping and the number of stories, is also assessed. The effect of bidirectional hazards on fixed-base buildings is also presented for comparison. The key response quantities of base-isolated buildings are presented and compared for different isolation systems. Parametric investigations are also conducted, and the trends of the response quantities are presented to study the influence of important parameters of isolation systems in protecting the buildings under the multihazard scenario of earthquake and BIGM. The results of the investigation show that the behaviors of the buildings equipped with various isolation systems are different for the two hazards. Moreover, the influences of the key parameters of the isolation systems are found to be different for various hazards. Therefore, the selection of design parameters of isolation systems shall be made with due consideration of the influence of multiple hazards. Additionally, the influence of the properties of the superstructure, such as the number of stories and the damping of the superstructure, on the behavior of the base-isolated buildings under the multihazard loading, is presented.

Abstract (sommario):
Recently, there are a lot of technological developments in the earthquake engineering field to reduce structural damage and one of them is a base isolation system. The base isolation system is one of the best technologies for the safety of human beings and properties under earthquake excitations. The aim of this paper is to review previous research works on simulation of base isolation systems for RC buildings and their efficiency in the safety of these buildings. Base isolation decouples superstructure from substructure to avoid transmission of seismic energy to the superstructure of RC buildings. The most effective way to assess the base isolation system for RC building under different earthquake excitations is by conducting experiment work that consumes more time and money. Many researchers had studied the behavior of base isolation system for structure through modeling the behavior of the base isolation in which base isolator is modeled through numerical models and validated through experimental works. Previous researches on the modeling of base isolation systems of structures had shown similar outcomes as the experimental work. These studies indicate that base isolation is an effective technology in immunization of structures against earthquakes.

Abstract (sommario):
To protect civil buildings, industrial facilities and bridges against earthquakes and explosions, various seismic isolation systems (SIS) are used. SISs always include dissipative elements that dissipate energy transmitted to the protected object (PO) during seismic effect, operation of which is based on the elastic-plastic deformation of special structures — elastic-plastic dampers (PD). The paper proposes a method for selecting the optimum design parameters of elastic-plastic dampers in SISs. The problem is solved upon specifying an ensemble of random seismic effects. A suite of artificial accelerograms obtained by statistical modeling is used as a stream of events supplied to the right side of motion equations. Dispersion of PO absolute accelerations was chosen as an optimization criterion. After linearization of the model, the dimensionless damping coefficient introduced into the dynamic model according to the Voigt–Bock hypothesis was taken as a variable parameter. Relationship between the selected optimization criterion and the theory of seismic risk of V.V. Bolotin has been established. It is shown that optimization of the damping coefficient reduces the seismic risk by 1.5–1.8 times. A method has been developed for transition from the optimum damping coefficient to design parameters of elastic-plastic dampers that implement this coefficient. Analytical dependences have been obtained enabling to set those parameters easily.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper introduces a recent seismic isolation system, named Roll-in-Cage (RNC) isolator, for efficient protection of bridges against destructive earthquakes. The RNC isolator is a rolling-based isolation system with several integrated features in a single unit providing all the necessary functions of vertical rigid support, horizontal flexibility, full stability, hysteretic energy dissipation, and resistance to minor vibration loads. Besides, it is distinguished by a self-stopping (buffer) mechanism to limit the peak bearing displacement under abrupt severe excitations, a linear gravity-based self-recentering mechanism to prevent permanent dislocations after excitations, and a notable resistance to axial tension. A three-span box-girder prestressed concrete bridge is investigated under a set of different destructive real and synthetic earthquakes including near-fault, long-period, and pulse-like ground motions. As a performance measure, the responses of isolated and nonisolated cases are compared. In addition, the RNC isolator’s behavior is then compared with those of other isolation systems including HDB, FPS, and LRB. The results confirmed that the RNC isolator has a superior behavior in achieving a balance between the peak displacements and accelerations of the isolated deck, relative other isolation systems, besides being the most (relatively) efficient isolator in the great majority of studies performed.
