Testo completoAverage turbulence intensity of the jet flow was characterised by integrating the local turbulence intensity values over the width of the nozzle and at several axial positions from the nozzle exit to the near approach to the impingement surface. Average impingement heat transfer was obtained by integrating the local Nusselt number over an area of the impingement surface relevant to the process engineering application of impingement drying of paper.
Of the several simple methods of turbulence generation examined, the most effective was the simple expedient of placing a bar with a diameter 1/8 that of the nozzle width along the centreline of the slot nozzle. For a heat transfer averaging area equivalent to a nozzle area of 5% of the impingement surface and a nozzle to impingement surface spacing of 1.0 to 1.5 times the nozzle width, this simple method increased average heat transfer rates over those of the plain nozzle by 14%, with only a 7% increase in nozzle operating pressure. The results are presented as enhancement in average heat transfer as a graphical function of mean turbulence intensity, and as an empirical correlation between mean Nusselt number, mean intensity of turbulence and Reynolds number.

Verrière, Jonas. "ZDES simulations of propulsive jets : physical analysis and influence of upstream turbulence". Thesis, Paris 6, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016PA066499/document.
Testo completoIn this thesis, the ZDES method is assessed for the simulation of propulsive jets. This work focuses on the shock-cell positioning and the mixing layer development of a dual-stream nozzle configuration with an external plug, typical of modern aircraft engines. Reynolds averaged data are discussed in terms of mean and fluctuating quantities as well as in the frequency domain and compared with experimental data. First, the advantage of using a low dissipative spatial scheme as well as a subgrid length scale based on the local vorticity is demonstrated, especially for the development of the core mixing layer. Besides, the "automatic" mode of ZDES (mode 2) is found to provide similar mixing layers as the user defined mode. Then, the use of the Random Flow Generation (RFG) technique at the inlet boundaries of the core and fan channels in order to reproduce the turbulence rate at the center of the nozzle ducts is shown to accelerate the RANS-to-LES transition in both external and internal mixing layers, which is in better agreement with the experimental results. The transition length is further reduced when the injected turbulent ratio is higher, but also when the injected turbulent length scale is smaller. Of interest, the shock-cell positioning in the fan jet is also improved using RFG, which emphasizes the importance of accounting for upstream turbulence for this type of simulations

Testo completoThis work is devoted to the study of the undeveloped turbulence in heterogeneus gaseus mixtures, using experimental tools (Hot-wire Anemometry, Rayleigh Light Scattering, Laser Doppler Velocimetry) and analytical methods (variable-viscosity Navier Stokes equations). A new technique combining HWA and RLS is first adapted to reliabily measure the fluctuating velocity and concentration fields in variable-viscosity flows (herein, a propane-air mixture). A variable-viscosity round jet (propane emerging into an air-neon mixture) is characterized and compared with a turbulent air jet discharging into still air, at the same initial jet momentum. An analytical work is further performed with a particular focus on the jet axis, based on the Navier-Stokes equations including variable viscosity to support the experiments. It is shown that the kinetic energy dissipation rate is enhanced by several additional terms, particularly involving 'viscosity-velocity' correlations

Testo completoWe study the influence of density variation on the development of primary instabilities of a plane jet by direct numerical simulation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Each numerical method and the structure of the program are presented in detail with a special focus on the way boundary conditions are set. To validate the overall numerical simulation, we develop a linear analysis which provides results for a wide range of density ratio. Thanks to our non linear code, we study the convective/absolute transition of the varicose mode when density is decreased for several profiles, including Bickley and top-hat like, and prove that the linear marginal stability criterion is not sufficient to explain the observed dynamics of the jet. For a top-hat like profile and values of the density ratio close to unity, we observe dumped global modes. An hypothesis is proposed to explain this phenomenon. A short experimental study ends this work: we insist on the used methods and give information about the characteristic frequencies of the jet deduced from velocity and density measurements

Increasingly large and powerful engines are required as the mission requirements for tactical aircraft become more advanced. These demands come at the cost of an increased production of noise which is particularly hazardous to crewpersons operating on Navy aircraft carriers during take-off and landing. Noise-induced hearing loss from extended exposure to high noise levels has become a major medical expenditure for the Navy. To address this issue in tactical aircraft engines, the sources of jet plume noise must be reduced, but doing so requires improved understanding of the connections between nozzle boundary conditions, the jet turbulence plume, and the radiated noise while keeping in consideration system constraints and performance requirements. The current study introduces a novel method for controlling supersonic jet noise induced by turbulence through the introduction of an offset non-uniform temperature perturbation at the nozzle mouth. Non-invasive flow measurements were conducted using stereoscopic particle image velocimetry to obtain high-resolution velocity and turbulence data. Analysis of the flow data indicate that an offset reduced temperature plume introduced at the nozzle exit has a first-order effect on the turbulence evolution which result in small, but significant reductions in jet noise levels. The reductions observed are attributed to a disruption in the coherence of the primary noise generating turbulence structures in the jet plume which are associated with the formation of stream-wise vortical structures induced by the cold plume.

Testo completoThis dissertation is devoted to the study of sheared supersonic reactive flows and more specifically the dynamics of highly underexpanded jets. Such complex compressible turbulent flow conditions are of praclical interest for scramjets as well as rocket engines applications. Similar condit ions may also be found during the accidentai releases of flammable substances into the atmosphere during high pressure vessel rupture or venting. This work is conducted with a high fidelity computational solver: CREAMS (Compressible Multi-reactive species Solver). It uses high precision numerical schemes third-order Runge Kutta scheme for time integration, plus a combination of seventh and eighth-order centered and WENO schemes for spatial integration. The molecular transport terms and chemical sources terms are handled with the most accurate descriptions, i. e., including detailed transport and chemistry. Inert flow simulations allow to characterize the importance of shock/turbulence interactions with a special emphasis placed on the small-scale scalar mixing. Highly under-expanded reactive hydrogen jet simulations underline the specific difficulties associated to ignition and combustion stabilization even in the presence of an external deposit of energy. Finally, the analysis of the rocket engine igniter jet reveals some specific features of self-ignition phenomena in such non-premixed conditions

Testo completoThis thesis is dedicated to the experimental characterisation and the numerical simulations ofa round impinging jet configuration seldom dealt with in the literature : a heated jet issues from apipe fully developed pipe at a high Reynolds number (ReD = 60 000) and normally impinges a platelocated three diameters downstream. The first part of this work is directed towards the generationof an experimental database by means of several measurement techniques in order to characteriseboth the dynamical and thermal flow features. The complementary techniques of laser Doppler velocimetry(LDV) and particle image velocimetry (S-PIV) allowed for the velocity and Reynolds tensorfield characterisation. The mean and fluctuating temperature fields were measured through cold-wirethermometry. Finally, the plate heat transfer distribution was obtained through the inverse methodof « rear face thermography » (ThEFA). The gathered data not only provided a comprehensive databasenecessary to validate numerical simulations but also permitted to highlight the large-scale floworganisation, with the presence of large vortices shedding at the free jet preferred mode and closelyapproaching the plate in the vicinity of the secondary peak observed in the heat transfer distribution. The second part of this thesis focuses on the numerical simulations aiming at reproducing the experimentalconfiguration. Two approaches were evaluated : the RANS approach in order to quantifythe relevance of industrial turbulence models and the Large-Eddy Simulation, more expensive, butproviding the 3D unsteady flow features. The RANS simulations showed that the models recognisedas the most efficient for this kind of configuration are unable to correctly predict the heat transferlevels. They are, on the other hand, well reproduced by the LES. The generated data allowed for betterunderstanding of the mechanisms leading to the secondary peak. This analysis highlighted theprominent role of the "hot spots", where only some of them can be related to « separated » regions, while the majority are associated with streamwise elongated structures

Testo completoThe aim of this work is a numerical and experimental approach of mixed convection induced by ab air injection into a dwelling cell. We first present physic laws and governing equations of the flows inside the cell, and then the numerical treatment using finite differences. Results for laminar natural convection are compared with existing works. Then an approach of two-dimensional mixed convection allows us to find characteristic flow regimes for aiding or opposing flow of natural convection. Cavities with complex geometries such as inside boundaries and free boundaries are also studied. Afterwards, we present turbulence modelling using a k-epsilon model and no wall function. Comparison with other works is done about turbulent natural convection. In the last chapter, we show experimental results relative to mixed convection within a real scale cell and first numerical simulation of two-dimensional turbulent mixed convection

Testo completoTo improve the aerodynamic performance particularly in the field of transport (aerospace, automotive, ..), the flow control is a promising solution for rupture. It presents at the same time a major stake for industry and a challenge for the scientists. The fallout aimed by control (particularly active control) are of an at the same time economic (reduction of consumption) and environmental (decrease of greenhouse gases). The effectiveness of control is closely related to the actuator used. The fluidic actuators and particularly the synthetic jet appear to be a promising technique for progress. The objective of this work is the development, validation and implementation of this type of actuator. We thus designed an actuator of the synthetic jet type based on a loudspeaker. The performances of this actuator were estimated in a quiescent environment. Both hot wire anemometer and the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) are used. The effects of different parameters were analyzed (frequency, amplitude forcing, ...). Particular attention has been devoted to the study of the inclination of the ejection slot. Three angles were used (30 °, 45 ° and 90 °). In each case the development of synthetic jet and the vortices have been characterized. By the same techniques of measurement in a wind tunnel, we have studied the interaction of the synthetic jet with a transverse flow. Testo completoThe phenomenon of dispersion/fragmentation of corium remains one of the most complex and uncertain elements of nuclear accident modeling. In order to validate the sub-mesh models implemented in the MC3D software (developed by IRSN), an experiment without vapor explosion has been conceived. It consists of a low-melting liquid metal jet (Field metal) interacting with a stagnant water in a large tank. This thesis is divided into two parts ; the first one is related to the study of the so-called secondary fragmentation of an isolated drop of Field’s metal, for low Weber number. To this end, we designed an experimental device, GaLaD (drop-on-demand droplet generator). In this part, a literature review on liquid-liquid fragmentation is conducted with a quantitative comparison of the secondary fragmentation for a single drop in the liquid-liquid and the gas-liquid cases. The second part concerns the study of a jet of Field’s metal. For this purpose, GaLaD was modified, so as to be able to generate small jet of liquid metal in water. The obtained results allowed a better understanding of the physical phenomena involved in two-phase turbulent jet fragmentation. In the framework of this thesis, an additional experimental device designated by JaLaD is developed. Subsequently, this device will be dedicated to the study of metal jet in water and must allow us to reinterpret the data of classical experiments via new innovative measurement techniques
