Academic libraries are focused towards effective information provision that is necessary for teaching, learning and research. Makerere University Library (Maklib) is no exception as it has strategies towards effective provision of information resources. Journals are some of the resources that are provided by the library to support teaching, learning and research and they are provided in two formats: namely, the electronic format and the print format. This research attempted to investigate whether postgraduate students use these journals and the formats they prefer to access. Research was conducted involving 114 postgraduate students using questionnaires as the data collection tool. Qualitative data was collected, analysed using Google Forms and presented in graphs, tables and text. Findings revealed that most postgraduate students are aware of the existence of journals provided by the library although some expressed a lack of awareness. Further still they use the journals provided and most of them have preference for the electronic format of journals. However it was also revealed that access was hindered by several factors such as long procedures to access the library. Recommendations that need to be adopted by Maklib are also discussed such as increasing on awareness campaigns, continuous training of students and staff and providing the necessary infrastructure to enhance access to the journals.Mini Dissertation (MIT)--University of Pretoria, 2015.

The purpose of this study is to answer the question: How does the Online Trombone Journal address the issues of credibility, accessibility, and permanence in the publishing of an electronic journal?Documents from the Online Trombone Journal were examined in order to discover what specific methods are in place addressing credibility. Issues of prominent brass-related print journals were examined in order to locate article citations. Interviews were conducted with authors who are published in both an established print journal and the Online Trombone Journal. The Online Trombone Journal was searched for in both standard print indices and also on-line search engines in order to determine accessibility. To investigate permanence, on-line documents at the Online Trombone Journal concerning archiving were investigated, and an interview conducted with the publisher.The existence of a Review Board at the Online Trombone Journal, as well as standard guidelines for the review process indicates that credibility is addressed through peer-review of articles. Research showed that articles in the Online Trombone Journal have not yet begun to appear in other scholarly resources.In the area of accessibility, the content of the Online Trombone Journal is not yet indexed in standard music indices. The Online Trombone Journal does rank very high in searches using the term "trombone" on Internet search engines.Addressing permanence, research shows that apart from visiting the Online Trombone Journal web site, there is no other method for accessing its content. Thepublisher of the Online Trombone Journal indicates that a CD-ROM of all articles will be published and distributed to libraries and collection agencies in order to address the issue of permanence.The Online Trombone Journal has done an effective job of addressing the concerns of credibility and accessibility in on-line journal publishing. Le projet original de cette thèse se profilait à l'origine en trois étapes. D'abord, l'écriture d'un roman, Le rêve du diable, dont l'action se déroulerait à Montréal, entre 1899 et 1901. Ensuite, la rédaction d'un «Journal d'écrire» qui retracerait les étapes de production du RDD1; il s'agissait donc: de tenir un journal qui rassemble ses efforts non pas autour de détails biographiques ou d'étapes de l'existence, mais autour de la démarche de l'écrivain, de sa pensée créatrice, de se faculté transf or-matrice et de son affrontement quotidien à l'écriture. (Ce qui se lit en creux, ici, c'est le caractère troublant de la relation de l'écrivain à l'écriture, à sa créature et à l'institution.) Enfin, l'élaboration d'une «Histoire d'écrire», qui tenterait de recons-tituer les motivations ayant guidé les premiers essais d'écriture, et qui questionne-rait le désir global d'écrire. Or, assez vite, le «Journal d'écrire» s'est mis à occuper l'espace central de l'écriture, jusqu'à bientôt forcer la remise à plus tard du RDD. De fait, ce n'est pas le RDD qui perdait tout intérêt, mais le «Journal d'écrire» qui commençait de remplir tout l'espace passionnel de l'écriture. La réflexion fragmentée commençait de développer des prétentions esthétiques et d'inscrire sa marque dans le monde des formes. La production du roman fut donc reportée au profit de celle du «Journal d'écrire». Cependant, et cela malgré la mise à l'écart du RDD, le «Journal» demeurait, du moins en grande partie, un journal d'écrire. En effet, au cours des quelque trente-trois mois de rédaction de ce «Journal» (précisément mille jours), neuf nouvelles ont été produites qui ont presque toutes déjà été publiées; quelques essais, articles et conférences se sont également ajoutés à cette production. Évidemment, le «Journal» a toujours été le premier témoin de ces travaux. Parallèlement à cette démarche, toutefois, le «Journal» a rapidement débordé les limites de sa définition initiale de «journal d'écrire» pour devenir un journal beaucoup plus complexe, plus ambigu, animé par plusieurs pistes d'écriture paral-lèles. Son titre, dès lors, n'était plus parfaitement adéquat à ses objectifs. Un nou-veau titre, Journal de mille jours, est alors venu le chapeauter pour en marquer les limites temporelles: mille jours (du 26 juin 1983 au 21 mars 1986). Au cours de cette période, quelque mille cinq cents fragments ont été accumulés, dont mille —exactement— ont été conservés, au moment de la récriture, dans un certain esprit de composition générÀ la lecture de ce qui précède, quelques questions peuvent surgir. Qu'est-ce que ces fragments? Quelle composition les rassemble? Pourquoi conserver mille de ceux-là en autant de jours? Pourquoi les présenter sous cette forme?

L’audience inégalée du journal télévisé de 20 heures en fait le symbole de la communication dite de masse suscitant par là même des représentations sociales péjoratives et suspicieuses. Parangon de l’information moderne (imagée, en direct, dite de masse) et symbole de la « malinformation », le journal télévisé cristallise les critiques adressées à lapresse plus largement. Le point de départ de cette thèse renvoie à un paradoxe propre au journal télévisé : il est le média le plus consommé et le plus critiqué. Cette recherche sur les téléspectateurs du journal télévisé permet de comprendre ce paradoxe par une logique de lien social et invite, par ailleurs, à s’intéresser aux représentations sociales des téléspectateurs pour comprendre la réception du journal télévisé. Il s’est agi au travers d’une double enquête, qualitative et quantitative, de remettre en question la notion de masse, au sens où « le public » du journal télévisé n’est pas une totalité,mais qu’il existe bien des publics ayant des attentes mais surtout des représentations sociales différentes qui correspondent à divers usages sociaux de JT différents. Tout en menant une réflexion méthodologique sur les biais inhérents au phénomène de réception de la télévision, ce travail de terrain a conduit à saisir les publics des journauxtélévisés selon leurs représentations sociales et leur rapport à la politique. L’analyse qui en ressort met en lumière la dimension normative du phénomène incitant à déconstruire la notion de critique à travers trois idéaux-types critiques qui correspondent à des représentations divergentes des médias, de l’information et de la politique. En s’intéressant auxreprésentations des publics des journaux télévisés, l’analyse met en exergue l’importance de la représentation de l’influence du journal télévisé dans la mesure où elle est fortement liée aux critiques. Ainsi, nous avons mis en évidence une structuration des publics des différents journaux télévisés selon trois pôles, alors formés par le 20 heures de TF1, celui de France 2 et enfin, ce que nous avons nommé les « hors JT » qui rassemble les téléspectateurs des JTminoritaires du point de vue de leur audience. Chacun de ces JT s’adresse à un public relativement homogène et conduit à concevoir la réception de ce genre télévisuel selon une typologie des publics qui renvoie à trois modes de réception.Les satisfaits du JT répondent à une norme sociale propre aux sociétés modernes selon laquelle on doit être informé. Il apparaît donc que la logique sous-jacente à cette pratique est une logique de lien social qui pousse les individus à être informés, comme si être informé permettait de se conformer à l’idéal de l’individu moderne. Le primat accordé aux imagessuppose que ce qu’ils cherchent à travers cette pratique c’est plus à partager des émotions communes qu’un contenu informationnel qu’ils considèrent minimal. Ainsi l’usage du journal télévisé est avant tout un usage d’intégration sociale qui se traduit dans le discours des enquêtés par l’expression « être au courant ». Ce type correspond principalement auxtéléspectateurs du 20 heures de TF1 car ce qu’ils cherchent ce n’est pas tant l’information qu’un contact phatique avec le monde extérieur et à se conformer à la majorité. Les critiques représentent un type de public proche de celui de France 2, il se caractérise par un certain niveau culturel et social qui explique certainement son plus fort niveau de politisation. Ces téléspectateurs font preuve d’une critique modérée des journaux télévisés qui s’apparente à une cette critique citoyenne leur confèrant alors un rôle de vigie sur l’information et veille à son rôle démocratique. Enfin, les dénonciateurs, assimilent les « 20 heures » à la « pensé unique », la « manipulation », voire à de la « propagande ». This was an action research study in which qualitative and quantitative data was collected. The students demonstrated a true fondness for journal writing and expressed interest in continued use. Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt die erste wissenschaftliche Untersuchung des in der Donation’63 fast vollständig dem französischen Staat übereigneten malerischen Nachlasses von Georges Rouault (1871 – 1958) dar. Schon ein Jahr nach der Schenkung durch die Erben des Künstlers wurde die Werkgruppe 1964 bei einer Ausstellung im Louvre als „révélation de l’atelier“ gefeiert, jedoch in der Folge keiner eingehenden Analyse unterzogen. Heute gehören die insgesamt 891 Skizzen, Studien und unvollendeten Arbeiten zu den umfangreichsten und interessantesten Schenkungen im Bestand des Centre Pompidou. Mit der Frage nach ihrer Aussagekraft hinsichtlich des Werkprozesses wurde bei den Untersuchungen nicht nur dem ausdrücklichen Anliegen der Donatoren, sondern auch dem besonderen Charakter der Gruppe Rechnung getragen. So gibt jener einzigartige Fonds in seiner Gesamtheit wie im einzelnen Werk reiche Aufschlüsse über zentrale, bisher ungeklärte Aspekte des Werkprozesses Rouaults: vom allgegenwärtigen Phänomen des Inachevé über die grundlegende Wechselbeziehung zwischen der Arbeit des Malers und des Grafikers bis hin zu explizit stilbildenden poietischen Strategien. Letztere bieten unter anderem den Schlüssel zum Verständnis des eng umrissenen Formenkanons Rouaults, der bemerkenswerten haptischen Materialität seiner Bilder oder des bleibenden Dualismus der Elemente von Farbe und Zeichnung in der ihm eigenen Form des „Cloisonnisme“. Zugleich zeigt sich im Werkprozess des innerhalb der Klassischen Moderne oft als Solitär bezeichneten Künstlers exemplarisch und nicht selten in letzter Radikalität Charakteristisches der künstlerischen Arbeit einer ganzen Epoche.L’ouvrage suivant présente la première étude scientifique de l’héritage artistique de Georges Rouault (1871 – 1958) légué presque entièrement à l’État français par la Donation '63. Un an déjà après la donation des héritiers de l’artiste, en 1964, le groupe d’œuvres a été apprécié comme « révélation de l’atelier » lors de l’exposition au Louvre, cependant, il n’a pas été soumis à une analyse approfondie par la suite. Aujourd’hui, les 891 esquisses, études et œuvres inachevées font partie des donations les plus amples et les plus intéressantes existant au Centre Pompidou. Avec la question concernant leur force d’expression eu égard au processus de travail, non seulement le vœu formel des donateurs a été pris en considération lors des études mais aussi et surtout le caractère particulier du groupe. Dans sa totalité ainsi que comme chef-d’œuvre isolé, ce fonds unique révèle amplement les aspects centraux, inexpliqués jusqu’ici du processus de travail de Rouault : partant du phénomène partout présent de « l’Inachevé » en passant par l’interdépendance fondamentale entre le travail du peintre et du graphiste jusqu’aux stratégies poïétiques influençant explicitement le style. Ces dernières offrent, entre autres, la clé de la compréhension du canon formel étroitement tracé de Rouault, de la matérialité haptique remarquable de ses toiles ou du dualisme des éléments de la couleur et du dessin dans sa propre forme du „cloisonnisme“. Simultanément, le travail de l’artiste souvent décrit comme solitaire au sein du courant moderne classique illustre de manière exemplaire et non rarement dans une dernière radicalité certaines caractéristiques artistiques de toute une époque.
This thesis is the first scholarly analysis of the artistic legacy of Georges Rouault (1871 – 1958), which was donated almost in its entirety to the French State in 1963. In 1964, just a year after the donation had been made by the artist’s heirs, this group of works was celebrated as a “révélation de l’atelier” in an exhibition at the Louvre, but no detailed analysis was subsequently undertaken. Today the 891 sketches, studies and unfinished works are among the largest and most interesting collections held by the Centre Pompidou. By considering the significance of the artist’s working process, the present study not only meets the explicit concerns of the donors but also takes account of the special character of this group of works. This unique collection – both as a whole and through the individual works – provides a wealth of information about hitherto unexplained key aspects of Rouault’s working process: from the ubiquitous phenomenon of the ‘inachevé’ to the fundamental interrelationship between the work of the painter and that of the printmaker and to explicitly style-shaping poietic strategies. The latter provides the key to understanding Rouault’s narrow canon of forms, the remarkable haptic materiality of his works and the constant dualism of the elements of colour and drawing in his distinctive style of “cloisonnisme”. At the same time, the work process of this artist, who has often been described as a solitary figure in classical modernism, also exemplifies – in a sometimes uncompromisingly radical manner – certain characteristics of the art of an entire period.

This study is an examination of Henry Fielding's attitude toward the uses and abuses of language in the four newspapers which he edited: The Champion (1739-40), The True Patriot (1745-46), The Jacobite's Journal (1747-48), The Covent Garden Journal (1752). This exploration begins with a consideration of Fielding's attitude toward the corrupting and corruptible word and the relationship which he saw between the corruption and decline in language and the corruption and decline in ethics and morality. It focuses on these four journals largely neglected by previous Fielding critics, searching them for references to language uses and abuses and for the social theory underlying these remarks. This study moreover traces and investigates Fielding's seventeenth-century philosophical forerunners-Thomas Hobbes, Bernard de Mandeville, Anthony Ashley Cooper Third Earl of Shaftesbury, John Locke--and their profound effect on Fielding's ethos and ethics in particular and on those of the eighteenth century in general. Locke is discussed in most detail because he directly shaped Fielding's attitude toward language.Because language is a major tool of certain learned professions, three chapters examine Fielding's position in his journals on the uses and abuses of language as related to three groups of professionals: the clergy, writers and critics, and lawyers and doctors.This study suggests further areas needing investigation: (1) critical editions of The Champion and The Covent Garden Journal, (2) a comparative study of Fielding's journalistic efforts with those of Addison, Steele, Defoe, and especially Swift, (3) an examination of Fielding's attitude toward women in the four journals, (4) an exploration of the philosophical relationship between Fielding and Locke, (5) a comparison of Fielding's theories of language and society with those of two modern linguistphilosophers--George Orwell and Walter Ong.Fielding attempted in his four journals to restore a language that he saw as fallen into corruption and abuse. Avec la concentration de la propriété des entreprises de presse et la convergence du contenu et des ressources, les journalistes voient leur liberté professionnelle et leur autonomie de travail diminuer au profit de la liberté des entreprises de presse. Dans cette optique, notre projet de recherche se penche sur la question de l’impact du contexte organisationnel des entreprises de presse sur la qualité de l’information. Nous avons effectué une étude de cas qui compare le contenu d’articles publiés par un même groupe de journalistes au Journal de Montréal et à ruefrontenac.com, un site d’information qu’ils ont créé durant leur conflit de travail. Notre hypothèse était que la qualité de l’information était meilleure sous ruefrontenac.com qu’au Journal de Montréal parce que les journalistes y possédaient plus de liberté. Nous avons effectué des entrevues semi-dirigées avec 10 journalistes qui ont travaillé pour ces deux organes de presse et nous avons comparé la qualité de l’information d’articles qu’ils y ont publiés. Les résultats obtenus ont confirmé notre hypothèse de départ et ont indiqué que le principal indicateur affecté par le changement de contexte organisationnel était celui de l’intérêt public. Cette étude est pertinente et contribue à l’avancement des connaissances, puisqu’elle met en lumière comment différents contextes de travail peuvent affecter la qualité de l’information, le droit d’accès du public à l’information et, par le fait même, la démocratie.

Peu de chercheurs ont entrepris d'étudier en profondeur le journal intime. Pourtant la dynamique inhérente à ce genre littéraire offre un terrain propice à une variété d'explorations. Cet ouvrage s'attache à l'aspect narratif du journal intime. Nous prenons pour acquis que ce dernier raconte une histoire prise en charge par un discours. Dans une perspective temporelle, nous abordons les diverses manifestations du récit dans le genre étudié. La thèse se divise en deux principales parties. Dans un premier temps, nous élaborons une théorie du récit du journal en s'inspirant de celle proposée par Gérard Genette dans Figures III . À l'instar de Genette, nous explorons la temporalité du récit selon trois volets: l'ordre, la durée et la fréquence. Chaque volet est étudié à partir d'un corpus de journaux québécois et français. Nous retrouvons, entre autres, le Journal en miettes de Ionesco, le Journal de Colette et de Benjamin Constant ainsi que ceux de Saint-Denis Garneau, d'Henriette Dessaulles et de Michèle Mailhot. En marge de ces journaux, figure le Journal de Katherine Mansfield, une oeuvre donc l'étude sera reprise dans la deuxième partie de cet ouvrage. De ce corpus il a été possible de dégager quelques consensus quand [i.e. quant] au fonctionnement du récit. Mais la théorie proposée servira avant tout d'instrument par sa capacité à s'ajuster à une oeuvre donnée. La deuxième partie de cette thèse porte sur l'étude approfondie du Journal de Katherine Mansfield. Des concepts développés dans la partie précédente sont mis à contribution afin d'analyser et d'interpréter cette oeuvre majeure de la littérature intime. Les études de l'ordre, de la durée et de la fréquence sont reprises en fonctions du ou plutôt des récits du Journal . Les diverses manifestations temporelles du discours narratif deviennent ainsi des indices forts utiles à la saisit [i.e. saisie] de l'oeuvre. Elles permettent d'appréhender l'évolution et les transformations de la diariste aux [i.e. au] cours des années inscrites dans son Journal.

Engine downsizing, improving fuel efficiency while satisfying the environmental legislations are one of the main driving forces in developing new solutions for passenger cars.Engine main bearings, are journal bearings which support the crankshaft and operate principally in full film lubrication. Defining the optimum design parameters of the bearings which can provide low friction and high durability for automobiles represents a multi-variable problem.Being the supporters of the main shaft driven by the internal combustion engine, main bearings are subjected to strenuous operating conditions. These include high loads and pressures amongst others. The trend in lubricant selection for these components is shifting towards choosing engine oils with lower viscosity to further reduce fuel consumption. Simultaneously with the shift in oil, new solutions for controlling the geometry and the topography on the micro-scale are becoming available. Three main bearing top layers plated on a conventional aluminum alloy containing tin and silicon were selected for the study. The top layers, one bismuth based and two newly developed polymer based, were investigated for their frictional and wear performance.In order to study experimentally the influence of different design parameters on bearing performance a test rig and a methodology was developed. The selected engine main bearings were tested in lubricated condition with two oils having different viscosity. Pre - and post test analysis of the shaft surface roughness was performed using white light interferometry. The wear performance of the bearings was measured both as mass loss and surface topography.The results suggest that the developed test rig can be used to simulate close to running condition testing. The measurement method and set up shows good consistency at a load of 2000 N, but indicates inconsistency in set up at 500 N.It is found that the newly developed engine main bearing top layers have promising frictional and wear performance, providing a reduction in friction by up to 20%.

La récolte du fruit de son labeur ne vient qu'après de longs mois passés à prendre bien soin de l'espace qu'il a créé, engraissé, entretenu et protégé des prédateurs qui menaçaient son intégrité, En assistant à la croissance de son oeuvre, il doit prendre bien soin de supporter les plantes les plus fragiles à l'aide de tuteurs, de tailler les feuilles qui font de l'ombre aux autres plantes, de couper les tiges trop chétives, celles qui sont vouées à une mort certaine. À certains égards, le travail du scripteur ressemble à celui du jardinier. Comme lui, à mesure que son oeuvre prend corps, il doit surveiller le processus de sa croissance de près, nourrir les parties les plus faibles de son discours et peaufiner son texte jusqu'à ce que sa création ait enfin la forme voulue. Au terme du passage des saisons qui ont marqué le développement de l'oeuvre, de son premier germe jusqu'à sa pleine maturité, l'auteur et le jardinier doivent éprouver un même plaisir à la montrer, à la faire visiter, lorsqu'elle est enfin arrivée à maturité. Tout au long de la rédaction de ce mémoire, il m'est arrivé d'avoir, en quelque sorte, le sentiment de jardiner. D'abord parce qu'au coeur même de l'univers romanesque que j'ai imaginé se trouvait un jardin. Ensuite, parce que le processus de création littéraire m'a semblé présenter des analogies étonnantes avec le travail horticole. Quand on écrit un roman, on se creuse les méninges, on sème des idées, on les regarde germer, puis croître et à la fin, on récolte les fragments d'un texte auquel on tente de donner une forme définitive en disposant les scènes, les épisodes et les chapitres de façon à obtenir un ensemble équilibré, un espace agréable à explorer pour le lecteur.

Background: Journal writing is often used to gauge student skills and knowledge. There is disagreement as to whether journals should be graded because students may embellish experiences or write what the instructor wants to read. If students are not engaged in honest reflection, the benefit of reflective practice is reduced. Purpose: The purpose of this correlational non-experimental study was to examine if a relationship exists between the grading of reflective journals and student honesty in reflective journal writing. Theoretical Framework: The theoretical framework for this study was based on Schӧn’s reflective practice theory. This theoretical framework is suitable as students participate in reflective journal writing learning from experience and response to the situation, scaffolding on previous knowledge with the application of new knowledge. Methods: The correlational, non-experimental study was conducted at five Midwestern U.S. pre-licensure nursing programs. Data were collected using an anonymous survey. The non-probability sampling technique was used to examine the existence of a relationship between the grading of reflective journals and student honesty in reflective journal writing. Results: Findings indicated that a significant relationship exists between the grading of reflective journals and student honesty. The relationship between reflective journal writing and embellishment was negative and non-significant. Conclusions: This study revealed that a relationship exists between graded reflective journals and study honesty in reflective journal writing. Nurse educators and policy makers need to assess the process of reflection which involves critical thinking and problem-solving instead of grading the written component; possibly, changing to a complete/incomplete grade.

Une première partie situe le texte dans l'Histoire de la pratique et le place en perspective des productions contemporaines. Elle donne lieu à une réflexion sur la notion d' "intime " en tant que catégorie esthétique. This gives rise to a questioning about " intime " as an aesthetical class. Welcome to the second issue of the International Journal of Homiletics!
For our first two issues we have chosen to focus on the theme Preaching in Times of Transition. We invited some homiletical scholars to submit an article, but we have also accepted unsolicited articles addressing the theme. As a consequence, the present issue consists of seven articles from authors from India, the Netherlands, Fiji, the United States, Germany, as well as a joint article from scholars from Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
The homiletic focus on transition uncovers the many shifts of perspectives and changes of traditional practices that characterize the theology and practice of preaching across the globe. At the same time this focus shows how different cultures and nations share the challenges of trying to cope with various groups of people in exile and transition. Since preaching is a boundary transcending genre in itself, we find that these different international contexts shed light on some common and some very distinct international homiletical insights. For the next issue of the International Journal of Homiletics, we invite unsolicited articles on any theme within the research field of homiletics – regardless of faith tradition. All articles will be peer reviewed and must be written in English. However, we are very keen on publishing articles in
the author’s native language in addition to English.
The articles in this issue
In her article on “Exodus or Exile” Jerusha Matsen Neal analyzes hermeneutic shifts in a Fijian Methodist Church trying to cope with the effects of globalization, climate change, and military coups in the Fiji Islands. Through sermon analysis, Neal points to the potential of preaching as a way of making room for new understandings of place and direction in a world in transition. In another article, Theo Pleizier explores the development of homiletics in the Netherlands as a case-study for recent international homiletic thinking. Based on the material of doctoral theses published since the turn of the century, Pleizier focuses on the role of pneumatology, language, and empirical research in the development of recent international homiletical research. Leonora Tubbs Tisdale analyzes developments of historical transitions as she traces the itineraries of Early Women Preachers in the United States who were preaching long before women were officially ordained into ministry. Based on her study of Quaker, evangelical, and Holiness Women in the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, Tisdale reflects on this history in relation to preachers on the margins today.
Bryan Nash discusses the practice of topical preaching in light of postmodern transitions. He analyzes the potential of a topical preaching approach that embraces otherness and conversation rather than allowing only one text to be heard at the exclusion of all others. Preaching among contexts of growing numbers of refugees runs as a common thread through several of the articles in this issue. In his portrait of an Indian context, Alfred Stephen, analyzes the challenges of refugees who are forcefully dislocated from their home countries outside India and relocated in Tamilnadu. Stephen suggests a three dimensional narrative approach to preaching as a way to address the existential experiences of trauma and alienation. Two other articles that focus on the situation of refugees in relation to preaching are
interrelated: firstly Alexander Deeg presents a new European research project in which homileticians from Greece, Hungary, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, Sweden and Denmark have collected
sermons from various European countries and analyzed them with regard to the so called European ‘Refugee Crisis.’ Deeg provides a brief overview of each of the seven studies. Thereafter, the results of the three Scandinavian studies are presented in a joint article written by Tone Stangeland Kaufmann, Carina Sundberg, Marlene Ringgaard Lorensen and co-authors from Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The research project touches upon the fraught topic of preaching and politics as it traces the influence of public discourse on preaching as well as the reverse influence of preaching on public discourse.
Finally the group of articles are rounded off with a ‘homiletical squib’ in which David M. Stark discusses the dilemma of “Preaching Politics” in light of the current North American presidential administration seen from the perspective of Germany where Stark has spent the past year as part of his Ph.D. studies. We are also very glad to welcome David Stark as the the English language editor for the IJH.

L'ecriture journalistique est "un art de parler" souvent meconnu. Une analyse de discours orientee vers une etude des processus linguistiques de production de sens permet de caracteriser le fonctionnement du discours du journal. Elle est effectuee ici a trois niveaux d'articulation du discours : le dispositif, des faits de langue (enonciation, modes de reference. . . ), les modes d'organisation discursive (narratif, descriptif, argumentatif). Les outils theoriques, appliques generalement a la litterature, sont adaptes pour etudier le travail rhetorique applique a l'information, dans une situation de communication particuliere-la communication mediatee. Un espace de strategies dans lequel se meuvent les partenaires de la communication, a ainsi pu etre defini en fonction des deux visees principales de ce discours : faire savoir et faire croire. La credibilite du journal repose alors sur deux effets, l'effet de realite et l'effet de verite. Par ailleurs le journal ne surgit pas de "rien" et le lecteur est soumis a un double processus : celui de la decouverte et celui de la reconnaissance. A speech analysis with such an objective as the study of the linguistic processes that eventually lead the "speaker" to produce sense can enable very researcher to define the main ways in which what specefic speech is used by the newspaper eventually works. In the present study, such an analysis will probe into three different levels of speech : the layout of the newspaper, such a varied linguage phenomena as enunciation technics, the various modes of referring to the topics dealt with. . . And also the different ways of organizing any speech, whether it be a story, a description or a demonstration. Such theorical processes as are ordinarily used for the study of litterature have been adapted to fit the study of rhetorical means used to provide the readers with news and information in as specific a situation as that of communicating through the media. Various strategies within whose range the two partners implied in the act of communicating have to "operate" as thus been defined, taking into account the main two aims of this kind of speech : how to let the readers know about the news and how to make them trust what is thus said. Depression is a crippling burden on a great many people, and it is often well hidden. Mental health professionals are able to treat depression, but the general public is not well versed in recognizing depression symptoms or assessing their own mental health. Active Listening Journal Interaction (ALJI) is a computer program that seeks to identify and refer people suffering with depression to mental health support services. It does this through analyzing personal journal entries using machine learning, and then privately responding to the author with proper guidance. In this thesis, we focus on determining the feasibility and usefulness of the machine learning models that drive ALJI. With heavy data limitations, we cautiously report that with a single journal entry, our model detects when a person's symptoms warrant professional intervention with a 61% accuracy. An incredibly large number of people suffer from depression, and they can rightfully feel trapped or imprisoned by this illness. A very simple way to understand depression is to first imagine looking at the most beautiful sunset you've ever seen, and then imagine feeling absolutely nothing while looking that same sunset, and you can't explain why. When a person is depressed, they are likely to feel like a burden to those around them. This causes them to avoid social gathering and friends, making them isolated away from people that could support them. This worsens their depression and a terrible cycle begins. One of the best ways out of this cycle is to reveal the depression to a doctor or psychologist, and to ask them for guidance. However, many people don't see or realize this excellent option is open to them, and will continue to suffer with depression for far longer than needed. This thesis describes an idea called the Active Listening Journal Interaction, or ALJI. ALJI acts just like someone's personal journal or diary, but it also has some protections from illnesses like depression. First, ALJI searches a journal entry for indicators about the author's health, then ALJI asks the author a few questions to better understand the author, and finally ALJI gives that author information and guidance on improving their health. We are starting to create a computer program of ALJI by first building and testing the detector for the author's health. Instead of making the detector directly, we show the computer some examples of the health indicators from journals we know very well, and then let the computer focus on finding the pattern that would reveal those health indicators from any journal. This is called machine learning, and in our case, ALJI's machine learning is going to be difficult because we have very few example journals where we know all of the health indicators. However, we believe that fixing this issue would solve the first step of ALJI. The end of this thesis also discusses the next steps going forward with ALJI.
