Abstract (sommario):

AbstractData-constrained modeling is a method that enables three-dimensional distribution of mineral phases and porosity in a sample to be modeled based on micro-computed tomography scans acquired at different X-ray energies. Here we describe an alternative method for measuring porosity, synchrotron K-edge subtraction using xenon gas as a contrast agent. Results from both methods applied to the same Darai limestone sample are compared. Reasonable agreement between the two methods and with other porosity measurements is obtained. The possibility of a combination of data-constrained modeling and K-edge subtraction methods for more accurate sample characterization is discussed.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract Computed tomography (CT) imaging with high energy resolution detectors shows great promise in material decomposition and multi-contrast imaging. Multi-contrast imaging was studied by imaging a phantom with iodine (I), gadolinium (Gd), and gold (Au) solutions, and mixtures of the three using a cadmium telluride (CdTe) spectrometer with an energy resolution of 1% as well as with a cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) detector with an energy resolution of 13%. The phantom was imaged at 120 kVp and 1.1 mA with 7 mm of aluminum filtration. For the CdTe data collection, the phantom was imaged using a 0.2 mm diameter x-ray beam with 96 ten-second data acquisitions across the phantom at 45 rotation angles. For the CZT detector, we had 720 projections using a cone beam, and the six detector energy thresholds were set to 23, 33, 50, 64, 81, and 120 keV so that three thresholds corresponded to the K-edges of the contrast agents. Contrast agent isolation methods were then examined. K-edge subtraction and novel spectrometric algebraic image reconstruction (SAIR) were used for the CdTe data. K-edge subtraction alone was used for the CZT data. Linearity plots produced similar R 2 values and slopes for all three reconstruction methods. Comparing CdTe methods, SAIR offered less noise than CdTe K-edge subtraction and better geometric accuracy at low contrast concentrations. CdTe contrast agent images of I, Gd, and Au offered less noise and greater contrast than the CZT images, highlighting the benefits of high energy resolution CdTe detectors for possible use in pre-clinical or clinical CT imaging.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract Several techniques exist for mapping the element pigments on painting using the synchrotron light or quasi monochromatic sources. K-edge subtraction technique is a well known technique and based on discontinuity in the attenuation coefficient due to photoelectric K-edge of the absorbing materials. A couple of filters with slightly different K -edge energies, if are with balanced thicknesses, can isolate spectra in a narrow energy band. Quasi monoenergetic X-rays with a spectral width Ek that is the difference in K-edge energies will be taken by subtracting images or spectral data. Thus by using filter foils with appropriate thicknesses with the K-edge absorption just below and above the K-edge energy of an element allows us evaluating the distribution of that element in whole painting. The aim of this thesis has been application of K-edge subtraction technique to determine pigment composition in paintings by using common X-ray sources with balanced filters. The K-edge digital subtraction technique actually is investigated for estimation of Cadmium element. By choosing the Silver Cadmium and Indium as filter materials with properly thickness and with K-edge energies very close to the Cadmium element, determination of cadmium content has been presented as qualitative and quantitative result. The technique is tested by using a RadEye200 CMOS sensor. Theoretical simulations considering the experimental setup of technique has been presented as preliminary investigation. Complementary analyses are preformed with micro X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (μXRF), in order to validate the technique for cadmium element with the same samples. Theoretical aspects of K-edge imaging, the algorithms used for elaboration of images, detailed information for cadmium pigments and samples tests, are described in first chapters. An evaluation of X-ray performance of RadEye200 CMOS sensor has been performed in terms of MTF, NPS and DQE. Preliminary theoretical simulation is performed to determine the range where KES imaging technique with balanced filters response linear with the element content in paintings. In chapter 5 after description of spectral characteristics of the tungsten X-ray tube with additional K-edge filtering, imaging and steps of elaborating images has been described. Determination of Cadmium element in its pigments it is performed by KES and Lehmann algorithm applied on digital images. Results obtained on different samples are presented by a couple of images, graphically, tabulated data, and discussed. In chapter 6 introduction in theoretical aspects of XRF spectrometry is presented. Measurements for sampling area of μXRF ArtaxBruker200 and for Cadmium content in same samples used for imaging are presented. In chapter 7 the results carry out from KES technique and XRF for cadmium element in different samples are compared. The comparison between KES and XRF technique performed with the same sampling area of two detection systems (CMOS sensor with SDD solid drift detector) on the same area of the test sample shows a very good correlation among them.

Abstract (sommario):

Spectral imaging is an emerging area of X-ray imaging that includes all the techniques which exploit the energy-dependent absorption properties of the matter to either provide quantitative information about the scanned object or to discriminate different materials. Though the potentials of spectral imaging are well known for over many years, the interest on spectral techniques is rapidly increasing only in recent years due to the development and widespread of dedicated acquisition systems able to acquire simultaneous (or nearly simultaneous) X-ray images at different energies. In this context, the development of energy resolving X-ray photon counting detectors (XPCDs) and the increasing availability of synchrotron radiation can provide interesting solutions for spectral imaging applications such as e.g. the K-edge technique. This thesis presents the implementation and the optimization of two state-of-the art acquisition systems suitable for spectral imaging applications with particular interest on the K-edge technique. The first system is an acquisition setup for spectral Computed Tomography (CT) made by coupling a polychromatic source with an energy resolving XPCD implementing two energy thresholds. The work carried out with this setup concerned the thorough characterization of an innovative XPCD featuring a sharp energy resolution, the design of a dedicated image processing procedure to achieve high quality CT images and the development of an automated procedure to produce accurate 3D maps of a K-edge element within a sample. Moreover, to allow further optimization studies, a simulator able to reproduce X-ray images with energy resolving XPCDs has been modeled, developed and validated. The last part of this thesis presents the development and the implementation of an acquisition setup for spectral imaging at synchrotron sources based on bent-Laue crystal optics. The results achieved with a prototype setup optimized for energies around 20 keV are presented, the future developments of the technique are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):

X-rays produced within an infrared free-electron laser (FEL) and imaged with a gated, intensified television camera may provide an inexpensive alternative to the use of synchrotrons for transvenous coronary angiography. The energy of these x-rays is dependent on the electron energy that can be controlled electronically. Variation of the x-ray energy will allow radiography above and below the K-edge of a number of elements. Image enhancement can be accomplished by digital subtraction of the radiographs. The x-ray intensities based on photon and electron intracavity powers in the operating Los Alamos 10-μm FEL compare favorably with those obtained from larger and much more expensive synchrotrons and electron storage rings. The FEL x-ray source and gated television camera can be synchronized with different phases of breathing and cardiac motion to allow the study of the heart and blood vessels at various stages of these motions.
