Abstract (sommario):
Myths are intimately connected with emotions, but what the nature of the relationship really means, what it is, and how it functions are in many ways vague and unspecified. This is an examination of how, when and where emotions are referenced in theories of myth. The purpose is to point in a direction of possible new questions for future research on emotions and myth. Three major themes, centered around three major theorists of myth, are examined. The first treats perspectives of, and inspired by, Lucien Lévy-Bruhl. It is a theme based around views of myth as creating collective emotions. The second theme, centered around Bronislaw Malinowski, examines theories understanding myth as handling difficult emotions. The third theme deals with perspectives from Claude Lévi-Strauss’s structuralist theory of myth, where myth is seen as mediating contradictions, and thereby also mediating emotions of the contradictions. The three themes are then examined in relation to theories from the burgeoning history of emotions. New theoretical positions, such as the bodily and moral aspects of emotions, are examined and the result suggests that the central connection between myth and emotions could be found in humankind’s ever present concern to regulate, to discipline, and to form expressions of emotions.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This essay will examine the Swedish edition of the German treatise, Makrobitoik oder die Kunst das Leben zu verlängern (1796), which was published in Sweden in 1798. The treatise became immensely popular throughout Europe after it was published and its author, C. W. Hufeland became known for his macrobiotic; that is the art of prolonging one’s lifespan. The Swedish edition, Konsten at lefwa länge, will be examined from a medical history per-spective with the intention to analyze the connections between vitalism, emotions and the body. The analysis is primarily an exploration into the depiction of emotions, their connec-tions to the body and to medicine but will also analyze the treatise’s vitalist theory. The essay will also examine the portrayed difference between the sexes. The aim of the analysis is to further the knowledge of the history of the body, medicine and of emotions from an eight-eenth century scientific viewpoint. The analysis establishes the importance of the vitalist theory for the treatise’s view on the body and on emotions. The body was largely controlled and in symbiosis with a lifeforce that originated from nature itself. It was very important to properly manage the lifeforce and doing so also meant controlling the emotions. An emotional outburst was believed very dangerous and especially feelings of melancholia, hypochondria and envy could seriously affect one’s health. Possible outcomes of these unhealthy emotions were the drainage of the body’s lifeforce which then affected other functions, such as the digestion, the cardiac cycle and the nervous system. This could ultimately result in the body’s decay and finally death. It is also established that women were more likely than men to suffer the dangers of emo-tions. Since their lifeforces and bodies were frailer they were also more prone to suffer from hypochondria and emotional affliction. The treatise also explains that the male lifeforce was in some ways preferable to the female lifeforce which made men more durable. Though just like some emotions were deemed unhealthy and dangerous there were also emotions that were vital to a long life. Love, happiness and tranquility for instance were im-portant components for the body’s health though self-control and a rational use of one’s emo-tions were deemed most important.

Abstract (sommario):
This is a study of Samuel Pepys diary where the focal point is emotions in his professional life, emotions are understood through Barbara H. Rosenweins theory of Emotional Communities. The main part is made up of two chronological chapters following through the ten years Pepys kept a diary. The point is to illuminate Pepys professional life in the British Royal Navy through the perspective of emotions. We follow Pepys’s professional development, where emotions is discussed in relation to concepts such as personal interest and social status. From the first years of the diary to latter perspectives of him turning into the great naval administrator he became known as. Pepys in his professional sphere strictly controlled his emotions and soared above his competitors. He was a man who was puritan raised, highly emotional, educated and curious - on the fringes of the power epicentre in restoration-era England.

Lindblom, Ina. "Känslans patriark : sensibilitet och känslopraktiker i Carl Christoffer Gjörwells familj och vänskapskrets, ca 1790-1810." Doctoral thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen för idé- och samhällsstudier, 2017. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-141913.

Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation is a study of how the culture of sensibility was expressed in the everyday practices and social relations of the Gjörwell family. Headed by publicist, publisher and royal librarian Carl Christoffer Gjörwell (1731-1811), the Gjörwell family served as the centre of a wide circle of friends in late 18th-century Stockholm. Gjörwell has been regarded as one of the first Swedish representatives of 18th-century sensibility as well as an archetype of the Swedish cult of friendship. Due to his effusive emotional expressiveness and passionate friendships with other men, Gjörwell has largely been derided as effeminate by researchers from the 19th century onwards. Using theoretical perspectives from the field of the history of emotions (more concretely the perspectives of William Reddy, Barbara Rosenwein and Monique Scheer) this study centres on the emotional practices of the Gjörwell family, especially taking aspects of gender, class, sexuality and power into account. Gjörwell’s vast collection of family and friendship correspondence forms the empirical basis of this study. This study shows that the Gjörwell family and circle of friends in many ways could be regarded as an emotional community in which primarily emotions of happiness and joy are expressed. Furthermore, this study shows how the exercise of power could form part in the creation of an emotional community, as Gjörwell makes constant attempts to influence the way family members and friends manage their emotions, strongly dissuading them from the expression of melancholy. Although he has been viewed as effeminate by posterity, Gjörwell in fact regards himself as manly. This is due to his ability to remain joyful through adversities which testifies to his strong, and therefore manly, nervous organisation. This study thus further illustrates how a marked shift in masculine gender norms took place between the 18th and 19th centuries. This study also shows how expression of tender emotion could be a way of reinforcing personal status. This was due to the close association made between sensibility and virtue, in itself a central concept during this era. As Gjörwell is denied recognition in his professional life, the expression of tender emotion – and thus of virtue – becomes an important aspect of his personal life.

Abstract (sommario):
Title: IN THE NAME OF GOD. THE YEARS 1096-1098 OF THE FIRST CRUSADE The purpose of this essay is an attempt to understand how God is understood during the First Crusade 1096-1098. How feelings such as fear, shame, betrayal are perceived and portrayed. An Emotional Historical approach. In addition, a qualitative text analysis is applied to see how the concepts are described in sources such as letters and a chronicle. My predominant result and how I understand my source material is that God is the greatest and the power that governs human destiny. As a result, he decides who wins the crusade. Fear is hidden or repressed by ascending into God plus the feeling of being fulfilled by Him. When doing something shameful you break the knight ideal. It occurs, and in some cases leads to an exclusion from the community of knights and nobles and exclusion from the church. Exclusion can be revoked by once more go on a crusade. Betrayal is attributed to the enemy but is used to the same degree by the Crusaders.

Abstract (sommario):
This essay aims to study the Swedish suffrage movement, LKPR from an emotional historical perspective. How did the activists in the early 1900s relate to emotions, in a time in which women were described as “too emotional” to participate on the public stage? What do the emotions that got expressed actually mean and how could this affect the practical actions of the organisation? Do the activists share an emotional language, simply because they share the same restrictions and goals in life? The study will be formed as a discourse analysis, which will show us the importance of understanding that language and practical actions are interrelated. In time, we will see how the Swedish organisation actually used quite an aggressive rhetorical language, which differs from their practical actions. They used words such as unworthy, threatening, guiltand shame, belligerent, etc. And I came to realize just how willing and well the organisation and the actors within this compound actually adapted their language and the emotions that they described depending on the social, religious and political context that they found themselves to be in. The LKPR:s own journal very rarely held back emotions in any way, while actors within the organization that also wrote in other journals adapted to the preconceptions that could be found within those surroundings and readers. And based on this fact, the language of the LKPR:s actors and journal differs quite a lot from other common newspapers that were published at the same time and that discussed the same kind of issues. I would not hesitate tosay that the language of the LKPR actually does remind quite a lot about the english suffragettś rethorics, and therefore, I will argue, that further studies would gain from studying the relationship between the swedish activists and the english suffragettes, how this relationship affected the language and emotions and the practical actions.

Abstract (sommario):
This study contributes to the particular field of emotional history by exploring collective social attitudes towards affective expression. Here, the passionate behaviour of Swedish Prince Frederick Adolph is witnessed and evaluated by the country’s royal court during the eighteenth-century. The perspective on contemporary elite ideals is influenced by Barbara H. Rosenwein’s theory of “emotional communities”. By methodologically discerning the moral values in aristocratic and royal diaries, one can fruitfully analyse the group’s normative emotional ideas. Resulting from this thesis is an understanding of the royal court’s approval of the prince’s apparent sincere sensitivity and the disapproval of his passionate ways. Also, the importance of the culture of sensibility is understood to have an opponent in the society’s traditional structures. This is a revelation of an early modern emotional group’s formation based on shared European ideals in addition to social communal and individual belonging.KEY WORDS: history of emotions, sensibility, Sweden, royal court, Prince Frederick Adolph, diaries

Abstract (sommario):
Romance in the era of romanticism A comparative study of representations and conceptions of love in literature and among the Swedish nobility 1741-1782. The period of investigation chosen for this master’s thesis is often said to be the birth of the romantic era, a time when love supposedly conquered marriage. My aim has been to study both fiction and autobiographical texts, such as diaries and letters, to broaden our understanding of conceptions of love in the period of Romanticism. With hopes to provide a new perspective on historical conceptions of love: how people understood and described it in their everyday lives. The men and women of the nobility are often portrayed as unable to afford love, as it were; too much of their good name and wealth were dependent on marriage alliances and the politics of landed property and inheritance. But they too read the famous novels of their day and were influenced by the changes in culture and society, but to what extent? On the basis of a modern definition of romantic love, I have chosen a number of themes for comparison; independence, gender, class and faith. This study shows that the concept of love imagined and the love experienced differ depending on these themes. Love was an idea as well as an emotion experienced. However, the idea proved elusive in the everyday lives of the men and women studied. The novels are critical towards the nobility’s way of life: love ought to be natural and differences in income or status ought not to stand in the way of love. Love in its purest form was perceived to be a way to God. Two souls in love were considered destined by nature for each other. To love was to live, and to live was to love.

Abstract (sommario):
The Figures Deconstructing Thought Forms: The Colours  Deconstructing Thought Forms: The Shapes
A book design project that shows the theories of color and form in the book Thought Forms from 1905 as an early of art- and design theoretical work. The book Thought Forms by Annie Besant and C. W. Leadbeater is a theosophical book that shows "thought forms". Colourful shapes formed by thoughts and feelings, only visible for the clairvoyant. The book is believed to have inspired abstract artists such as Wassily Kandinsky and Hilma af Klint, who were both members of the Theosophical Society. Through a series of three books, I present the color and shape systems from Thought Forms as an early art and design theoretical work. This project is both an investigation of the influence of emotions and spiritual ideas on design as an exploration of the book designs effect on how we receive a content.    The result is a series of three books: Deconstructing Thought Forms: The Figures  Deconstructing Thought Forms: The Colors Deconstructing Thought Forms: The Shapes
