Abstract (sommario):
This paper empirically examined the validity of Hecksher-Ohlin theorem in the context of the Philippine-Japan inter-industry trade. Specifically, this study tried to validate whether Japan and the Philippines are primarily exporting their relatively abundant factor and importing their scarce inputs as predicted by the H-O theorem. The question of whether factor abundance affects specialization of export trade was also addressed in this study. This study employed the Leontief’s test for H-O theorem with the addition of multiple regression time-series analysis for further validation of the test.

Abstract Using data from the Japanese Panel Survey of Consumers (JPSC) for the period 1994–2007, I examine the effect of childbirth on fathers’ wage rates and labor supply in Japan. I also compare the effects of fatherhood between different cohorts by dividing the JPSC sample into two birth-year cohorts (those born in or before 1960 and those born after 1960). The results show that the birth of children significantly increases hourly wage rates by 2.3% and annual work by 69 hours. Comparing these results to those of studies based in the United States and Germany shows that while the effect of

Abstract (sommario):
For many decades, Japan was the only advanced industrial country in the world that did not rely on unskilled foreign labor. For many observers, the Japanese case demonstrated that a country could fully industrialize and sustain high levels of economic growth without becoming dependent on large populations of immigrant workers. Instead of importing immigrants, Japan was able to meet its increasing demand for unskilled labor power by effectively mechanizing and rationalizing production and further utilizing untapped sources of labor (female and elderly workers). Because of the country's insisten

Abstract (sommario):
This paper examines the implications for macroeconomic policy in the context of global aging, particularly in Japan, focusing on the challenges facing the labor market and the social security system. As the proportion of the aging population increases, the Japanese economy is hit by a decrease in labor supply, changes in the demand structure, and increased pressure on social security. By analyzing the Japanese government's fiscal and monetary policies, the study reveals how these policies respond to aging by affecting employment rates and social security spending. The study finds that the Japa

The article considers the problem of international supply chains in machinery-building. The meanings of appropriate terms are specified (outsourcing, international production sharing, vertical specialization). It is clarified (following D. Hummels et al.) the definition of vertical specialization as a structure of supply chain when a country is using imported inputs to produce goods for exports. It is emphasized that countries exporting raw materials usually show high share of vertical specialization-based trade in their exports but not in imports. Developed industrial countries (excluding Jap

Abstract (sommario):
Demographic transition implies severe challenges for high income nations, for instance Japan, as the population decreases due to declines in birth rates as well as the higher rate of elderly population. More women are entering the labor market which affects birth rates. In addition, technological progress has improved health care and standard of living, bringing up life expectancies. However, the elderly population is increasing, elevating the dependency ratio which dampens the economic growth. The changed age structure alters the ratio of labor force negatively relative to population, in spit

Abstract Commercial banks are business firms engaged in the production and supply of intermediation services between savings-surplus units and spending-deficit units by combining labor, capital, and intermediate inputs. As financial intermediaries, they transform assets and serve as brokers of information. Like their counterparts in advanced economies, Korean commercial banks have undergone financial innovation and structural change in the process of deregulation. They have been transformed into multifaceted institutions supplementing their traditional role with securities business and a varie

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In the first three decades after World War II Japan can be regarded as a developing economy that, starting as a middle-income economy with chronic balance of payment pressures and Lewisian surplus labor, accomplished a successful transformation into a highly industrialized economy. This chapter examines the interaction between this development and the financial system. A brief summary of Japan’s macroeconomic performance between 1955 and 1990 forms the first section. The second section discusses the formation of the basic framework of the financial system of the high-growth period (19

This is a study on how to retain distribution functions at the port in the large-scale industrial disaster prevention scheme at the time of great earthquakes. Urgent need for such efforts has been mounting in recent years. Industrial disaster prevention scheme is, in other words, Business Continuity Management (BCM), which enables continuity of important businesses while trying to make an early recovery of overall business activities at the time of great earthquakes. When an earthquake occurs, it is important to quickly resume businesses after an initial period of confusion. For this purpose,

Boat seine fishing is used to catch mainly demersal species; it has many benefits such as reduced energy and labor costs, and low damage to the sea bottom if it is controlled. This fishing technique has complex motion between the seine boat and the supple net over large operating areas; therefore, the dynamics of its operating processes during fishing are unknown. To investigate the dynamics of boat seine fishing in detail, we calculated its dynamics during a fishing operation using a net geometry simulation system that we developed. Two experimental surveys were carried out in January 2007 at

Abstract (sommario):
Recently, the Junichiro Koizumi and Shinzo Abe administration has adopted labor reforms, and monetary authorities have updated unconventional monetary policies: quantitative easing of money supply and negative interest rate control. It can be identified that quantitative easing policy and negative interest rate policy have introduced and stimulated new styles of profit-seeking through stock market transactions, which only increases corporate and bank profits under a stagnant labor productivity growth rate. Under such a context, this paper analyzes the changing phase of the profit-seeking patte
