AbstractNo explicit higher-level cladistic analysis exists for Lasiocampidae, the largest family of Bombycoidea (s. lat.). As a start toward such a phylogeny, we sequenced the protein-encoding, nuclear gene elongation factor-I α (EF-1α) from 13 lasiocampids representing all the subfamilies and tribes present in North America, plus three outgroups. Phylogenetic signal, mainly from synonymous change, was strong, with seven of 11 potential groups in Lasiocampidae showing > 90% bootstrap support under parsimony and likelihood analyses. We catalogue 100 species (including nominotypic subspecies) and five subspecies in 35 genera of Lasiocampinae, Lasiocampidae from India. This represents 5% of the 1,952 species of Global Lasiocampidae. Information on types (locality and depository), synonymy, diversity and distribution in different biogeographic zones of India alongwith global records, contribution of various authors on Indian Lasiocampidae is provided. The survey has been carried out for assessment of Lasiocampidae fauna of Shirui Mountains and surrounding areas of Manipur during 2016 to 2019. Bharetta owadai Kishida, 1986, was considered a widespread Indomalayan species occurring in Taiwan (type-locality), mainland China and Vietnam. Study of the genitalia of adults and barcoding showed that the taxon is a group of sister species. The article updates the status of the three valid taxa of the genus Streblote Hübner, 1820 from the Malay Archipelago. The species Streblote castanea (Swinhoe, 1892) was described from an unstated location in the Philippines.
