Abstract (sommario):
AbstractIn Joseph Addison and Richard Steele’s periodicals The Tatler and The Spectator, the character sketch—a genre which traditionally relies on listing the distinctive traits of socio-moral characters—functions as an arena of literary experiment in the service of entertaining and reforming contemporary society. The article shows that these playful texts adapt conventional forms of the list, namely the last will and testament as well as the library catalog, to represent more or less well-known types of men and women. They thus engage the readers’ attention in what emerges as a complex epistemological process.

Abstract (sommario):
After 20 years of digitization efforts, hardly a single type of library information resource remains that has not shifted, at least to some extent, to an electronic, Web-based format: information about the library itself, catalogs, indexes, dictionaries and encyclopedias, books and journals, tutorials, reserve materials and reference services. The online migration of these resources has opened unprecedented opportunities to people with “print disabilities”, who cannot independently access printed works because of lack of sight, dyslexia or insufficient motor control (Coombs, 2000), but who are able to access electronic text with the help of assistive input and output technology, such as modified computer keyboards and screen readers with speech or Braille output (Mates, 2000; Lazzaro, 2001).

Abstract (sommario):
The diplomatic edition of the catalogue’s unique manuscript aims at representing to some extent its organisation and the edition thus includes information such as line breaks and the various rubrics that the scribe used. For the sake of legibility, the orthography has been standardised to bring it into a form familiar to modern readers. The text is thus reproduced with full diacritical marks, although they are rather rarely used in the manuscript. The organisation of the catalogue according to alphabet, size and themes is indicated by the catalogue’s writer in display script and indicated in the edition by setting these structural terms in bold.

A library portal is single-user interface for accessing a wide variety of electronic resources, both within and outside the library. A few federated search engines like EBSCO Discovery service, Summon (web scale discovery service), Knimbus, Mendeley, FedGate, ABCD open source software, Google CSE etc. are being used by libraries to give access to all subscribed or free online e-resources as well as library catalogues, archives' and other reading materials in the library to save the time of readers and give easy access to multiple databases and resources through federated search tool. In distance learning and online education environment libraries need to provide the right information on a single platform to its users from all resources or databases available in the library in a minimum of time. In this chapter the author discusses about the selected commercial as well as open source discovery tools used in Indian Libraries.

The Editorial Offices empirically populate the journal's website with content that can change dramatically (both in terms of website design and content) as the journal develops.
