The author Astrid Lindgren (1907-2002), well-known for the characters Pippi Longstocking, the Brothers Lionheart, Emil and Karlsson-on-the roof, is for many Swedes a genuine national icon. On several occasions, when a list of the most popular and influential Swede has been published, Astrid Lindgren’s name has been prominent. Around the year 2000 many Swedes voted Astrid Lindgren the most important person of the entire 2000 years, something that says much about our often short memory, but more about how popular Astrid Lindgren really is. In the year she turned 90 she was selected as ‘This Year's Swede in the World’ by The Society for Swedes in the World because few Swedes have been so esteemed throughout the world. On receiving the prize she said, ‘You are giving the prize of This Year's Swede in the World to a person who is extremely old, half blind, half deaf and completely mad. We must be careful about spreading this around’ (Törnqvist-Verschuur 2011, p.120).

Abstract (sommario):

The article investigates the complex intertextual dialogue between Torgny Lindgren’s Minnen (2010) and Augustine’s Confessions, from which Lindgren has taken the motto of his autobiography. By using the patristic intertext as a starting point, the investigation intends to show how Lindgren has constructed his image of Västerbotten. The article is divided into four parts. The first part (I), establishes the heuristic principles of the investigation, which adhere to the recent tendency in patristic studies to observe the heterogeneous character of Augustine’s world of thought. The second part of the article (II) charts parallels between text and intertext in their portrayal of grace, evil, and man. It emerges that those elements of Lindgren’s world view which are particularly closely related to Augustinian theology are also the ones that possess a particularly strong Västerbottnian character. This intertextual affinity can be explained not only with reference to the Lutheran tradition of Västerbotten, but also has to be related to the text’s specificstructure of memoria, which is unravelled in the remaining parts (III–IV). On the basis of modern cultural anthropological theories of memory, the third part demonstrates that most of the differences between text and intertext can be linked to the cultural memory of modernity, and document the rise and fall of industrial subjectivity. Lindgren embeds his autobiographical version of Västerbotten into the basic structure of modern memory, transforms it into a quasi-subject, and taints it with the symptoms of decay that plague the industrial ‘I.’ In the same as Western modernity, Minnen draws the majority of its metaphors of dissolution from Augustine’s paradigmatic doctrine of sin. The fourth part of the article (IV) aims to analyse the autobiography’s mechanisms of substitution. It is argued that these attempt—in analogy to many Western critics of modernity—to counteract the crisis of industrial cultural memory by reviving the Augustinian forms of memoria and creating a synthesis of pre-industrial and industrial. Within the quasi-subject of Västerbotten and its wealth of agrarian objects, Lindgren finds adequate metaphorical models for use in his compensatory project of counter-memory. The article concludes by observing that, just as Minnen’s productive dialogue with Augustine allows it to recapitulate the history of Western memory, Lindgren’s Västerbotten is elevated to the status of a universal symbol of European consciousness and its fate.

In a comment on my paper, “Moral Understandings: Alternative Epistemology for a Feminist Ethics” (1989) Ralph Lindgren questions the wisdom of confronta' tional rhetoric in my paper and much feminist moral philosophy, and the consistency of this stance with pluralism about ethics. I defend both the rebellious rhetoric and the inclusivity of my own approach, but suggest that pluralism in moral philosophy is harder to define than Lindgren's comments suggest.

Abstract (sommario):

Syftet med analysen är att följa hur olika skribenter debatterar användningen av ordet "neger" i samband med Astrid Lindgrens böcker samt TV-serien om Pippi Långstrump. Det material som har undersökts i denna analys är utvalda artiklar från olika tidningar samt två debatter från SVT. Metoden som vi har använt oss av är en komparativ metod för att göra en jämförande analys. Vi jämför den första utgåvan (1946) med den senaste utgåvan (2016) av Pippi Långstrump för att se vilka ändringar som har gjorts. Utifrån allt material har vi samlat och jämfört argument från negerkungsdebatten. De grundläggande argumenten som vi kommer fram till i vår slutsats för att ändra i Pippi-serien samt böckerna om Pippi är att barn inte ska känna sig kränkta av texten utan den ska inkludera alla människor. Argumenten för att inte göra ändringar är att en inte ska klippa i originalverk och en vill behålla det historiska perspektivet. Ett annat viktigt argument är att det kan vara farligt att ändra "historien" eftersom en inte kan veta vem som vill ändra i framtiden. Ändringen i både serien och böckerna om Pippi Långstrump påverkar inte handlingen och trots att nya utgåvor är reviderade finns originalet fortfarande kvar.

Abstract (sommario):

If we look at the world around us with a critical glance from a gender perspective we often notice that there are expectations of children because of norms, not least for the girls. This is widely used also in fiction and this shaped my wish that with this study examining girls in fictional roles. The author Astrid Lindgren has in her literature often one or more girls in prominent roles why my choice fell on to take a closer look at and analyze a few of these. The aim with this study has been to analyze selected girls' characters and stories by Astrid Lindgren. As a method for my study I have used a broad qualitative analysis from a gender perspective which created the conditions needed to provide answers to the work's questions about the characters and its similarities-and differences. What I found was that, even though they were written on different occasions over a forty-year-long period, the characters had a lot in common. Some of the common qualities between the characters were strength, skills and a willingness to do good. Which can therefore be assumed to have been important qualities to Astrid Lindgren.
Om vi ser på vår omvärld med en kritisk blick utifrån ett genusperspektiv märker vi att det inte är ovanligt med begränsningar för- och förväntningar på barn utifrån normer, inte minst för flickor. Det här är vanligt förekommande även i den fiktiva världen och detta formade min önskan om att med den här studien undersöka just flickor i fiktiva roller. Författaren Astrid Lindgren har i sin litteratur ofta en eller flera flickor i framträdande roller varför mitt val föll på att titta närmare på och analysera just några av dessa. Syftet med studien har varit att analysera utvalda flickkaraktärer och berättelser av Astrid Lindgren. Som metod för min studie har jag använt mig av en bred kvalitativ analys utifrån ett genusperspektiv vilket skapade de förutsättningar som behövdes för att ge svar på arbetets frågeställningar om karaktärerna och dess likheter- samt olikheter. Det jag fann var att karaktärerna trots att de var skrivna vid olika tillfällen under en närmare fyrtio år lång tidsperiod hade mycket gemensamt. Några av de gemensamma kvaliteterna karaktärerna emellan var styrka, kompetens och en vilja att göra gott. Kvaliteter som därför kan antas ha varit viktiga för Astrid Lindgren.

Astrid Lindgren är en av vår tids största författare och har böcker som läses runt om i hela världen. Genom undersökning av olika artefakter som tillkommit de senaste 12 åren kan en inblick, i hur stor hon faktiskt är denna Astrid, ges. Genom att placera artefakterna i de olika kategorierna: populärkultur, utbildningskultur och minneskultur för att sedan analysera vilka historiebruk som används när det talas om Astrid framkommer i undersökningen att det framförallt är inom det existentiella historiebruket samt det lokal-ideologiska historiebruket vi finner Astrid. Astrids namn och person används för att få människor att minnas samt att locka dem till olika turistmål som visar upp Astrid och hennes många karaktärer. Samtidigt som man kan se en skillnad i framställningen av Astrid inom populärkulturen, utbildningskulturen och minneskulturen. Inom populärkulturen samt utbildningskulturen påvisar man en stark Astrid med båda fötterna på jorden, som trots möte av hinder under åren kommer ut starkare och mer rakryggad än innan och som fortsätter att hyllas trots sina inlägg i samhällsdebatten. Inom minneskulturen däremot ser man framställningen av författaren Astrid. Den Astrid vi kände till när hon levde och den Astrid vi saknar.

Abstract (sommario):

Denna uppsats analyserar bilderboken ur ett genusperspektiv. De bilderböcker som vi undersöker är: När Emil skulle dra ut Linas tand (1976), Titta, Madicken det snöar (1983) och Pippi i humlegården (1949) skrivna av Astrid Lindgren. Syftet med analysen är att undersöka hur genus framställs i bilderböcker samt hur detta kan påverka elevernas identiteter. För oss som lärare är det viktigt att ha en medvetenhet kring hur genus framställs inom bilderböcker för att kunna arbeta kring det. Problemet ligger inte enbart i framställningen av genus utan hur vi som lärare och elever förhåller oss till den. Uppsatsen är en kvalitativ analys, mer specifikt en bilderboksanalys. Teorin som tillämpas är en genusteori. Analysen visar på att det finns stereotypa genusframställningar inom bilderböckerna men resultatet visar dock även att det finns stereotyper som bryts av både maskulina och feminina karaktärer. Vi kom även fram till att detta kan påverka elevernas identiteter på ett negativt sätt då de kan bli begränsade av vissa framställningar. För att motverka detta ska vi som lärare arbeta genusmedvetet i undervisningen genom exempelvis genuspedagogik och kompensatorisk pedagogik.

Abstract (sommario):

Syftet med studien är att fördjupa kunskapen om F–3-lärares erfarenheter av att använda Astrid Lindgrens böcker i undervisningen. Studiens ansats är kvalitativ i form av semistrukturerade intervjuer med verksamma lärare. Resultatet blev en variation av utsagor, som genererade fem kategorier. Slutsatserna är att lärarna i de lägre årskurserna väljer bort de böcker som de anser vara svåra och läskiga, medan lärarna i de högre årskurserna medvetet väljer att använda just dessa böcker i undervisningen. Ronja Rövardotter används oavsett årskurs. Lärarna använder sig av varierade arbetssätt i undervisningen kopplat till böckerna, men de vanligaste arbetssätten är högläsning och diskussioner. Lärarna anser att elever bör möta olika typer av litteratur, och att Astrid Lindgrens böcker är fantastiska berättelser som klassas som allmänbildning och en del av vår kultur. De böcker som används är främst personliga favoriter, då lärarna har goda barndomsminnen kopplat till böckerna. Böckerna går även att koppla till ett flertal kunskapskrav i läroplanen.

Abstract (sommario):

Historically, children’s literature awards have been established both to improve the quality of children’s literature and to promote the market for children’s books. Today, an international prize for literature can be seen as a socio-political game with the aim of disseminating specific values and sharing various ideas that seem relevant to a society. The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) is the most generous children’s literature award in monetary terms – and, at the same time, one of the largest literary awards. The study examines the details and choices of ALMA nomination, provides a brief insight into the problems of the awarding phenomenon, as well as considers ALMA in the context of Latvian book publishing.

Abstract (sommario):

The basic principle of wave superposition in the analysis of irregular linear wave problems such as the analysis of the wave surface itself or forces on large volume or slender structures, has been used for more than fifty years. Also the extension of the perturbation solution to second and in some cases third order is well known. In the nonlinear extension of the perturbation scheme, the basic idea is that nonlinear interaction between two or, in the third order case, three wave components can take place. The solution may therefore be found for two or three wave components and extended to the interaction of all wave components without further calculation. Whereas this superposition idea is an efficient and accurate method to determine wave loads and properties, the convergence properties with respect to the high frequency tail of the spectrum is often neglected. Many of the terms arising in practical applications increase rapidly as the frequency increases so that their convergence properties in a continuous wave spectrum are strongly dependent on the tail of the wave spectrum. The lack of convergence with respect to frequency will typically lead to a choice of: • Using an equivalent regular wave to represent the problem knowing that a regular wave cannot represent all the relevant physical and statistical properties of the wave field; • Make a sensible truncation of the wave spectrum knowing that the chosen truncation frequency affects the results; • Resort to an engineering solution such as the Wheeler (1970) stretching technique for crest kinematics above the crest. It is the object of the present paper to investigate the requirements to linear and second order problems to converge with respect to frequency. Using the Lindgren (1970) properties of a wave crest in a linear wave field and linear Monte Carlo simulations, it is found that requirements to convergence in a spectrum with an ω−4 and ω−5 tail is very strict indeed. It is further found that it is convenient to distinguish between problems where the linear component itself is not defined and problems where the linear component is defined but where the higher order component is not defined. It is shown that the latter problem may be overcome and an example of this is given.
