Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – This replication and extension of Hirsch and Gruss examines the impact of spatial density and ambient scent on consumers' spatial perception and anxiety. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – A 2 (spatial density: high, low)×3 (ambient scent: no scent, scent associated with spaciousness, scent associated with enclosed spaces) between-participants experimental design was implemented in a laboratory setting. A pretest determined scent selection and manipulation checks were successful. Findings – Spatial perception was influenced by spatial density, but n

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This study is focused on finding an optimal preparation of the human scent samples for their detailed chemical analysis in connection with the possible forensic identifications of human individuals in the future. At the present time, the scent identification of people is carried out nearly exclusively using specially trained dogs. It is assumed that the human scent contains a certain group of compounds which allows the identification of people, the so-called human scent signature; however, its chemical composition is completely unknown, as of now. The principal problem of human scent

Abstract (sommario):
Lilium cultivars have a wide range of variation in floral scent phenotypes. Using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analyses of volatile emissions during the night, the floral scent compositions of 35 lily cultivars from seven different hybrid groups were studied. The results showed that there was a positive correlation between volatile emission levels and scent intensities. Nonscented lily cultivars belonging to Asiatic hybrids hardly emitted volatiles, light-scented Longiflorum × Asiatic hybrids emitted low levels of volatiles, and scented lily cultivars (belonging to Oriental, Tr

Purpose The purpose of this paper is evaluate to what extent consumers can recognise a scent within a context that is congruent either with the product or with the user, respectively, objects’ quality or subjects’ involvement. Design/methodology/approach This paper consists of two experimental studies. The first study assesses people’s capacity to recognise three scents: leather, synthetic leather, and fabric. The second study assesses the way in which a frame of reference (quality or involvement) affects people’s capacity for scent recognition (leather and fabric). Findings Results confirm th

Abstract (sommario):
Pollinator insects forage in complex and unpredictable resource landscapes, often using social information from congeneric individuals to acquire knowledge about their environment. It has long been recognized that this process allows them to exploit floral resources more efficiently and thus increase individual fitness. However, by creating correlations between the behaviors of pollinators within a population, this could also indirectly influence the entire plant-pollinator community. One type of social information used by pollinators is the scent mark left on the corolla of flowers by previou

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The influence of females on the amount of scent-marking behavior displayed by male Mongolian gerbils was investigated. Males isolated from females scent mark at a low level which increases more than two-fold if females are present in the room for three weeks without direct contact with the males. A similar increase is obtained by application of pooled female urine directly onto the males’ noses.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Males typically adjust their reproductive strategies based on the perceived density and relative abilities of nearby competitors. In high-density populations, repeated encounters facilitate reliable, learned associations between individuals and their relative competitive abilities. In contrast, opportunities to form such associations are limited when densities are low or in flux, increasing the risk that individuals will unintentionally engage in potentially costly interactions with higher-quality or aggressive opponents. To maximize their fitness, individuals in low-density and fluct

Abstract (sommario):
A contextual analysis of scent marking by cheek rubbing in wild red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus), based on the study of behavioural time budgets and sequences, is presented. Scent-marking rates do not differ significantly between adult males and females. Comparison of the relative frequency of occurrence of each behaviour pattern in a scent-marking context with the relative frequency of these patterns in all other contexts reveals that locomotion, alertness, grooming, food carrying, and gnawing have a higher probability of occurrence when there is cheek rubbing. These results concur wit

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In wolves Canis lupus, scent marking plays an important role in territory defence. In Europe, studies on patterns of scent marking in wolves have mostly been conducted in mountains or primeval forests, but since these areas are characterised by low human activity, the impact of people on this behaviour has been neglected. We conducted a study that combined genetic methods with an analysis of the spatial distribution of wolf territory markings in lowland managed forests with high human activity. We found that scent markings are deposited by all members of wolf family groups. Wolves mos

Abstract (sommario):
Despite the economic importance of floral scent for plant reproduction, little is known about the molecular mechanisms of floral scent production. Floral scent is often a complex mixture of low-molecular-weight compounds that are mainly distributed within three groups: fatty acid derivatives, benzenoids, and isoprenoids. Esters of such compounds are the most widespread type. Headspace analysis in combination with gas chromatography and mass spectrometry of volatiles emitted from snapdragon flowers revealed that methyl benzoate is one of the major components of the `Maryland True Pink' genotype

Abstract (sommario):
Think-aloud protocol is a usability testing method whereby the participant running the usability test on an interface, thinks aloud as a way of giving feedback of the task he/she is performing on the given interface. It is one of the most researched on usability testing methods. It has attracted both praises and criticisms based on the effects it has on the participants or the tests at hand. A recently done study that used simple tasks, aimed at finding out the difference between using think-aloud protocol and not using think-aloud protocol. The study concluded that no notable differences were

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter explains the multi-agent system for effective information retrieval using information scent in query log mining. The precision of search results is low due to difficult to infer the information need of the small size search query and therefore information need of the user is not satisfied effectively. Information Scent is used for modeling the information need of user web search session and clustering is performed to identify the similar information need sessions. Hyper Link-Induced Topic Search (HITS) is executed on clusters to generate the Hubs and authorities for web page recommendations to users who search with similar intents. This multi-agent system based on clustered query sessions uses query operations like expansion and recommendation to infer the information need of user search queries and recommends Hubs and authorities for effective web search.
