Abstract (sommario):

Michael Mann's last two volumes ofThe sources of social powerare acknowledged to be a milestone in historical sociology. They have not quite reached undergraduate history reading lists, at least in the UK. This is perhaps because his approach does not fit neatly into our common categories. He proclaims himself both an incurable empiricist and a purveyor of ‘macro sociology’. He sees history as a pattern of disrupted equilibria, but this puts him much closer to the ‘historian of events’ than he would perhaps like to be. He is concerned with class, but is no dedicated Marxist, saying that his approach steers ‘somewhere between a Marxian and Weberian position’. He focuses on the nation-state, but is devoid of nationalist commitment of any sort, differing from the position of Jeremi Suri, for instance, whose recent workLiberty's surest guardianbroadly promotes a more positive view of America's world role. Indeed, Mann sometimes appears to be rather more hostile to what he sees as the counterproductive ‘imperialism’ of his adopted country than, say, Messrs Chavez and Putin. He wants to inflect history with theory, but has little time for post-modernism. Neither Derrida nor Foucault, let alone Deleuze and Guattari or Zizek, figure significantly in his books, an offence almost worthy of burning at the stake in today's academy. Yet his analysis of key elements of twentieth-century historiography is consistently perceptive and his treatment of the history of the USA and the fall of communism, in particular, outclasses that of any historian I have read.

Abstract (sommario):

This research employs a framework of social power, as coined by Michael Mann (1986; 1993), to understand the processes of state formation and development in Uganda. Using historical knowledge to understand the extent of social power relations in Ugandan society, the thesis assesses how these relations have shaped Ugandan state formation from the mid-1850s through to the present day. The research aims to bridge a gap between the discussions from African political theorists and historians and those of historical sociologists. It posits that state formation is a useful subject of study within the field of Development Studies, especially when it engages with historical empiricism. However, rather than providing a historically descriptive account of how the state formed, the research employs the theoretical framework of social power to guide the investigation of Ugandan state formation. Four units of analysis - ideological, political, military and economic sources of power form the basis of the approach. A historically and sociologically grounded analysis of the formation of the Ugandan state provides a contextually thick framework through which state development can be understood. By employing Mann's macro-historical sociological framework, this research aims to respond to calls not only for greater macro-theorisation, but also for history to be taken into account in development discourse. Unfortunately, the study of history and the use of historians' work is an investment of time which many development scholars struggle to afford There is an emerging critique that Development Studies scholars should not only acknowledge the historical processes underlying and framing their research, but that they should also actively engage with history to inform theoretical approaches to development. This thesis aims to demonstrate, from a historical sociology perspective, that history does matter for development and should, therefore, secure itself a place within the discipline, ensuring that Development Studies does include the study of social change in societies over long periods of time. Consequently, the analysis of this thesis argues that Mann's model of social power can cast light on development trajectories and specifically for the purpose of this study, on processes of state formation in Uganda.

Abstract (sommario):

This paper investigates the design cycle life of commercially available 9/16 inch needle valves and 9/16 inch tees under tri-axial fatigue. The valves and tees investigated were manufactured from 316 stainless steel and are rated to 4100 bar (60,000 psi) maximum allowable working pressure. The testing was performed using a tri-axial fatigue machine originally designed by Dr. B. Crossland, Dr. J.L.M. Morrison and Dr. J.S.C. Perry in 1960 [1] and upgraded by Michael D. Mann of KMT Waterjet Systems, Inc. This investigation compares the fatigue life of the 9/16 inch needle valves and 9/16 inch tees from two different commercial sources via actual test results from the fatigue machine.

Annual subscription reviews are a normal part of many libraries’ operations, but this process is time consuming and can be particularly challenging for institutions with small e-resources staffs. The approach pursued by the Michael Schwartz Library at Cleveland State University includes strategies other libraries may find helpful in moving beyond cost per use in their reviews. In early fiscal year 2019, the Michael Schwartz Library identified a need to systematically review all subscriptions annually. The library operates with a flat budget and cancellations are often required to manage inflation. Previously, subscription reviews were in response to immediate needs (e.g. budget cuts, changes in consortium offerings, etc.). Largely due to staffing and time constraints, examining the entire corpus of subscriptions was outside of the scope of past reviews. A new subscription review process was developed to prepare the library to make data-driven decisions regarding cancellations for the next fiscal year. The methodology developed for the new subscription review consisted of three phases with each phase narrowing the number of resources considered for cancellation. The first phase was an evaluation of resource performance from an acquisitions perspective and incorporated cost per use and annual price increases. In the next phase, subject librarians evaluated resources in their respective disciplines based on several criteria and were required to rank resources in order of retention priority. In the final phase, faculty were surveyed on content quality, frequency of use in instruction, and other criteria for those resources deemed “cancellation eligible.”

Abstract (sommario):

The main protease SARS-CoV-2 3CL Mpro (3CL-Mpro) is an attractive target for developing antiviral inhibitors due to its essential role in processing the polyproteins translated from viral coronavirus RNA. In this work, it was obtained non-covalent complexes of this protease with two distinct ligands, a peptidyl Michael acceptor (N3) and a ketone-based compound (V2M). The complexes were modeled from processed crystallographic data (PDB id: 6LU7 and 6XHM respectively) using combined quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) calculations. The QM region was treated at the PBE-def2-SV(P) level, while the Amber-ff19SB force field was used to describe the MM region. The obtained models were used to perform calculations for describing the protease/ligand binding, based in the framework of the Density Functional Theory (DFT) and within the Molecular Fractionation with Conjugated Caps (MFCC) scheme. Our results have shown values for the total interaction energies of -111.84 and -111.64 kcal mol-1 having as ligands a N3 and V2M, respectively. Most importantly, it was possible to assess the relative individual amino acid energy contribution for the binding of both ligands considering residues around them up to 10 Å of radial distance. Residues Gln189, Met165, Glu166, His164, and Asn142 were identified as main interacting amino acid residues for both complexes, being their negative interaction energy contributions higher than -5.0 kcal mol-1. In the case of 3CL-Mpro/ V2M complex, we should add His41, Ser144, and Cys145 as main contributing residues. Our data also have shown that interactions of type π-amide, π-alkyl and alkyl-alkyl and carbon hydrogen bonds should be also considered in order to explain the binding of 3CL-Mpro with the selected inhibitors. Our results also determined that the carbonyl-L-leucinamide scaffold of both inhibitors is its main determinant of binding with a contribution to the energy of interaction of 54.51 and 50.69 kcal mol-1 for N3 and V2M, respectively.

In flexible multibody systems, it is convenient to approximate many structural components as beams. In classical beam theories, such as Timoshenko beam theory, the beams cross-section is assumed to remain plane. While such assuption is capable of capturing the kinetic energy of the system accurately, it cannot represent the strain energy adequately. In the authorss recent paper, an systematic approach was proposed for the modeling of three-dimensional beam problems. The proposed approach is based on the Hamiltonian formalism and leads to an expansion of the solution in terms of extremity and central solutions. This paper extends the previous approach to the “Almansi-Michell problem,” i.e., three dimensional beams subjected to distributed loads. Such problems can be represented by non-homogenous Hamiltonian systems, in contrast with Saint-Venants problem, which is represented by homogenous Hamiltonian systems. The solutions of Almansi-Michells problem are not only determined by the Hamiltonian coefficient matrix but also by the applied loading distribution patterns. hence, the contributions of the loading pattern need to be taken into account. A dimensional reduction procedure is proposed and the three-dimensional governing equations of Almansi-Michells problem can be reduced to a set of one-dimensional beams equations. Furthermore, the three-dimensional displacements and stress components can be recovered from the one-dimensional beams solution.

Abstract (sommario):

The aim of the article is to concretize the concept of political ideology in the aspect of its matrix structure and in the context of the cognitive-evolutionary approach. Based on Michael Frieden's morphological approach to the analysis of ideological consciousness, the concept of cognitive-ideological matrices is introduced, which allows us to describe the process of transition from proto-ideological to ideological concepts proper, especially at the level of individual consciousness. The identification of the ideological concept as the main “gene” of conceptual variability and inheritance made it possible to describe the main parameters of the evolution of political ideologies and associate it with changes taking place at the individual consciousness level. The described concept was tested in a series of sociological studies of youth consciousness conducted in 2015-2016 and 2018-2020. As a result of the study, it was possible to first identify the “zero level” of ideology, at which the minds of young respondents are potentially open to the influence of diverse and often mutually exclusive ideological orientations, and second, to pinpoint the changes that have occurred in the cognitive ideological matrices of Rostov-on-Don students over the past five years. In the near future, those historical towns will be confronted with a new wave of developments, given that urbanisation of small and medium-sized cities and towns is high on China’s 13th five-year plan (2016-2020). This will pose a serious challenge to the conservation of their already vulnerable traditional urban fabric. This study aims to develop an accurate description of the transformation of built form, in particular street and block patterns, of the small and medium-sized historical towns, and how this is associated with the change of spatial distribution of urban activities. A total number of 36 towns in Zhejiang province, China are selected as case studies. Transformation of the urban fabric is examined based on cartographical maps of different historical periods using combined methods of urban network analysis and field survey. A large amount of user-generated geo-referenced open data, such as social media reviews, point-of-interest mapping, microblogs and night time illumination maps, are harnessed to produce a detailed description of urban activity patterns, of which the relationships to the transformation of urban form are investigated using multi-variate regression models. The results show how basic built form parameters such as spatial integration, between-ness centrality, block size and block depth can effectively and accurately describe the transformation of the small and medium-sized historical towns and how the formal changes are linked to the geographical shift of different urban activities. The ensuing discussion of the evolutionary principles surrounding misinformation describes how misinformation creates similar mindsets and behaviour patterns. The evolutionary process of misinformation is often a battle of opposing entities or forces - the rhythm of domination and subservience, altruism and egoism. For misinformation to succeed it requires all interrelated actors to remain, inadvertently or voluntarily, silent and cooperative with the misinformation sender. The negativity breeds negativity, which creates an unstable organisational environment leading to the collapse of the system supported on a misinformation foundation. Many organisations are based on this rhythm, and Michel Foucault affirms that organisations are repressive systems that require misinformation to control and dominate through knowledge management. The dominating organisational forces often include the use of unethical practices utilizing misinformation to dominate individuals, committees, other organisations, and the market. The hope of survival lies in the rise of Comte’s altruistic and ethical behaviour patterns beginning on an individual level, spreading within the unethical organisation to related organisations, and governments.

Housing affordability is an ever-growing concern in rapidly urbanizing countries like India. The need for affordable housing can hardly be overemphasis in India. Government has many policies and programs running for fulfilling the requirement. But it is essential to define affordability standards for the success of any such policies and programs. The Ratio Method, which is currently used as the base for determining affordable housing, doesn’t have the flexibility to match the varied scale and standards across Indian cities. This paper is based on Michel E stone’s residual income’ method to measure housing affordability for India’s million-plus city. It gives a new approach for measuring housing affordability based on the minimum living cost for survival. It uses Poverty Line data (2014) and NSSO economic survey data (2012) for defining the minimum standard of living in the city. Stakeholders can use the city-specific measurement for affordable housing generated from this paper in affordable housing policies and programs.

We have not yet emerged into a post-COVID world. The future is fluid and unknown. As the Academy morphs under pressure, as design practitioners and educators attempt to respond to the shifting world – in the M?ori language, Te Ao Hurihuri – how might we manage such changes? There is an indigenous precedent of drawing upon the past to assist with present and future states – as the proverb ka mua ka muri indicates, ‘travelling backwards into the future,’ viewing the past spread out behind us, as we move into the unknown. Indigenous academics often draw inspiration from extant traditional viewpoints, reframing them as methodologies, and drawing on metaphor to shape solutions. Some of these frameworks, such as Te Whare Tapa Wh?, developed as a health-based model, have been adapted for educational purposes. Many examples of metaphor drawn from indigenous ways of thinking have also been adapted as design or designrelated methodologies. What is it about the power of metaphor, particularly indigenous ways of seeing, that might offer solutions for both student and teacher? One developing propositional model uses the Pacific voyager as exemplar for the student. Hohl cites Polynesian navigation an inspirational metaphor, where “navigating the vast Pacific Ocean without instruments, only using the sun, moon, stars, swells, clouds and birds as orienting cues to travel vast distances between Polynesian islands.”1 However, in these uncertain times, it becomes just as relevant for the academic staff member. As Reilly notes, using this analogy to situate two cultures working as one: “like two canoes, lashed together to achieve greater stability in the open seas … we must work together to ensure our ship keeps pointing towards calmer waters and to a future that benefits subsequent generations.”2 The goal in formulating this framework has been to extract guiding principles and construct a useful, applicable structure by drawing from research on two existing models based in Samoan and Hawaiian worldviews, synthesised via related M?ori concepts. Just as we expect our students to stretch their imaginations and challenge themselves, we the educators might also find courage in the face of the unknown, drawing strength from indigenous storytelling. Eastern Liguria, a sometimes harsh and inhospitable place, encompasses some of the most beautiful landscape realities of the region, thanks to the presence of the sea and of an unexpected scenery. In some cases, land and water are connected, clearly showing the challenges that Man had to face in order to dominate Nature. In these cases, these forms of anthropization can turn their constraints into potentials. In this context, in a gulf such as the one between Rapallo and Portofino, outposts arose as observers to protect the neighboring territory, characterized by docks and, consequently, a suitable area for trade and for pirate incursions. For these reasons, military-style architectural structures arose, both defensive and of sighting, depending on the building site, then, in the sixteenth century coordinated and transformed into a real defensive system, by the will of the Republic of Genoa. Here, then, we can find the castle of Rapallo, the tower of Saint Michael of Pagana, the Castle of Santa Margherita, the Castle of Paraggi and finally that of Portofino, each one with its own identity and events, but connectable to the others, if only for the territorial belonging to an extremely particular site as for organicity and homogeneity. This is what the study of the Castle of Paraggi underlines, as it was built on the cliff overlooking the sea that has enjoyed a “double life” based on highlighting the latent diametrically opposed potential: born for the defense of the land from sea incursions, later on it was converted into a residence, conceptually transforming its position from a dominating into a reserved one, from an outpost on the sea clearly visible, to a place hidden on the land, from public to private. Over the centuries, the change in the function and life of the castle, has therefore been introducing changes to the facies and the composition of its appearance through the different stages of its evolution.

The article is devoted to the study of the Ukrainian segment of video blogging as one of the most popular types of the functioning of the modern blogosphere. The content and statistics of popular video blogs were studied on the example of YouTube channels of Ukrainian bloggers and famous journalists. Today we are witnessing the rapid development of technologies that help journalists become better, and the creators of media content to work more quickly and ensure the completeness of the information. With the help of Internet communication, new ways of disseminating information have appeared in journalism. Journalists more often create their blogs on various platforms. Blogosphere video content has become very popular among the Ukrainian audience on YouTube because today the video format is the most effective in terms of communication. The YouTube social network partially replaces television, and the variety of thematic content is ably adapted to a wide audience. The paper analyzes Ukrainian blogs managed by journalists, where they publish different content formats. Therefore, the presentation of various examples of video blogs in our work helps to understand the specifics of Ukrainian blogging at its current stage of development. After all, videos of popular people such as Michael Shchur, Yanina Sokolova, Ostap Drozdov demonstrate the peculiarities of Ukrainian popular video content. For the research, we chose those blogs that are currently relevant to Ukrainian YouTube and have their specifics and uniqueness. The main objective of a blogger is to react quickly to the flow of information because the rating of the channel being monetized depends on it. With the help of statistical data, we can conclude that the Ukrainian audience is interested in a wide range of different information. Viewers now value the independent opinion of bloggers and more often listen to it. Every important event is covered by bloggers promptly. And the format in which it is presented depends on the individual style of the author and the concept of his channel. We can conclude that the video content of the modern blogosphere is developing rapidly. This provides the audience with information for different tastes.
