Abstract (sommario):
This research employs a framework of social power, as coined by Michael Mann (1986; 1993), to understand the processes of state formation and development in Uganda. Using historical knowledge to understand the extent of social power relations in Ugandan society, the thesis assesses how these relations have shaped Ugandan state formation from the mid-1850s through to the present day. The research aims to bridge a gap between the discussions from African political theorists and historians and those of historical sociologists. It posits that state formation is a useful subject of study within the field of Development Studies, especially when it engages with historical empiricism. However, rather than providing a historically descriptive account of how the state formed, the research employs the theoretical framework of social power to guide the investigation of Ugandan state formation. Four units of analysis - ideological, political, military and economic sources of power form the basis of the approach. A historically and sociologically grounded analysis of the formation of the Ugandan state provides a contextually thick framework through which state development can be understood. By employing Mann's macro-historical sociological framework, this research aims to respond to calls not only for greater macro-theorisation, but also for history to be taken into account in development discourse. Unfortunately, the study of history and the use of historians' work is an investment of time which many development scholars struggle to afford There is an emerging critique that Development Studies scholars should not only acknowledge the historical processes underlying and framing their research, but that they should also actively engage with history to inform theoretical approaches to development. This thesis aims to demonstrate, from a historical sociology perspective, that history does matter for development and should, therefore, secure itself a place within the discipline, ensuring that Development Studies does include the study of social change in societies over long periods of time. Consequently, the analysis of this thesis argues that Mann's model of social power can cast light on development trajectories and specifically for the purpose of this study, on processes of state formation in Uganda.

Abstract (sommario):
The commercialisation of military services has increased in importance since the end of the Cold War. Commercial Military Service Providers (CMSPs) have found increased respectability and worked in states on every continent. Writing on CMSPs has similarly increased. Several high profile incidents have come under intense scrutiny, and has led to some portions of the literature demonising their use. However, there are still conceptual and theoretical issues which have been under explored. This thesis contributes to the literature which has sought to address this theoretical lacuna. Historical Sociology and comparative analysis are employed to analyse the implications of CMSP use on the state. A modified version of the Ideological, Economic, Military and Political (IEMP) model developed by Michael Mann, is used to theorise the impact of commercial security providers on existing sources of power within the state, and the relationship between them. The thesis uses two case studies which are representative of the use of CMSPs during this time period. The Sierra Leone Civil War and the invasion and reconstruction of Iraq since 2003. It will be argued that CMSPs alter the balance between power structures within the state, positively and negatively affecting the power of the state. The short term use of CMSPs has proven to be useful and of increasing importance; especially when military weakness is an urgent problem. However, although there has been no example of CMSPs intentionally threatening state stability, they can also subvert the power of the state. CMSPs, particularly when used for an extended period, have undermined the relationship between the sources of power, undermining political stability. Most significantly they weakened the state by undermining the strength it gains from its embeddedness in society.

Ce travail de recherche étudie le style cinématographique néoclassique. Le terme néoclassique est souvent utilisé pour appuyer une politique des auteurs sur un style et un passé connu et reconnu (le classicisme). Toutefois les cinéastes néoclassiques ne cessent de remettre en question le cinéma classique hollywoodien, de le distancier. C’est pour cela que le cinéma néoclassique intègre d’autres formes cinématographiques comme le maniérisme, le baroque, la modernité, etc. . . Qui ont émergé depuis le classicisme. Le style ne distancie pas seulement le squelette diégètique ou encore l’esthétique du cinéma classique, mais il distancie également certain de ses thèmes de prédilection comme le corps. Le corps est une entité considérée dans son ensemble, dans son unité sous le rapport de sa conformation. Le but de ma recherche sera d’englober les différents « corps » thématiques mis en place par le néoclassicisme au cinéma, afin de les appréhender et de les comprendre dans leurs figures esthétiques. Car bien que le corps humain représente, pour les réalisateurs comme pour les films, une forme de centre névralgique de la fiction, c’est en le confrontant avec d’autres formes corporelles que ceux-ci parviennent à le (re)définir. Ils donnent ainsi une étude contemporaine du corps humain mais aussi de la figure héroïque. Ils questionnent l’identité dans le monde contemporain, dans le flux des réseaux de communications et tentent ainsi de dessiner l’humain de la génération contemporaine. Ils confrontent le corps classique (celui du cinéma et de la société) au corps moderne confronté aux nouvelles technologies et à la perte des repères. Le cinéma néoclassique dresse, dans sa narration et son esthétisme, le canevas d’un corps contemporain et sa quête d’identité
This research work studies the neo-classic film style. The neo-classic term is often used to support the politics of the authors on a style and a known and recognized past (Classicism). However the neo-classic film makers do not stop questioning Hollywood classic cinema, distancing it. This is why neo-classic cinema integrates other film forms as the affectation, baroque, modernity, etc. Which have emerged since classicism. The style does not distance only the diegetic skeleton or also the aesthetics of the classic cinema, but also some of its themes of preference as the body. The body is an entity considered as a whole, in its unity under the relation of its conformation. Aim of my research will be to consider the various featured “bodies” set by neo-classic cinema, in order to assess and understand them in their esthetic figures. In fact even the human body does represent, for the moviemakers as for the films, a form of nerve center in the fiction, only by comparison with others body forms those reached to get a (re)definition. As a result is given a contemporary study of the human body but also the heroic figure. They put key questions on the identity in the contemporary world, in the flow of communication nets and try by this way to figure out human being in the contemporary generation. They compare the classic body (the one of the cinema and the society) to the modern body which has to face to new technologies and to lose one's points of reference

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is an analysis of the films of Michael Mann. The eleven films of this prominent Hollywood director are analysed in relation to existential philosophy and social engagement. The thesis establishes the case for Mann as an auteur, and identifies the philosophy on which this study rests. Through individual case studies of each of Mann's films, I argue that existentialism is explored within different social contexts that problematise the philosophy. The interrogation and problematisaticon of existentialism is performed by relating the philosophy to varying levels of social engagement, as some films present isolation and others illustrate community and social conscience. The thesis argues that by relating existentialism to social engagement, a non-philosophical critique of existentialism is performed.

The aim of this dissertation is based on the relation between the theme "death of man" and the emergence of Literature as a unique means of language in modernity. This relation is questioned by Michel Foucault in the book The Order of Things, in the terms of an incompatibility, in which the reappearance of the "self" of language that shines in our landscape from the emergence of literature is understood to threaten the sovereign status granted by the modern thoughts to the man-form. From this clipping, we intend to explain the terms of this incompatibility considering that, facing this new space of language, a heterotopic space that provokes the fading of the figure that until then was central to the ordering of modern knowledge, it provokes the fading of the main figure to the ordination of modern knowledge, opening up species of gaps in our thoughts that makes it possible to think differently.
O objetivo desta dissertação caminha em torno da relação entre o tema da ―morte do homem‖ e o aparecimento da literatura como modo singular da linguagem na modernidade, questão considerada por Michel Foucault em As palavras e as coisas sob os termos de uma incompatibilidade na qual o reaparecimento do ―ser‖ da linguagem, que cintila em nossa paisagem a partir do surgimento da literatura, é compreendido como uma ameaça ao estatuto soberano concedido pelo pensamento moderno à forma-homem. A partir deste recorte pretendemos explicitar os termos dessa incompatibilidade, considerando que face a esse novo espaço de linguagem, espaço heterotópico que suscita o desvanecimento da figura até então central à ordenação do saber moderno, abrem-se ao pensamento espécies de brechas, de espaços de abertura que nos possibilitam pensares outros.

Abstract (sommario):
Dix-neuvième siècle déicide, vingtième ébranlé par la barbarie, l’Occident revoit ses utopies de libération et se tourne vers la spiritualité orientale. Alors que l’exégèse biblique renonce à l’historicité du Christ au profit d’un postulat mythologique, le New Age actualise grâce à la figure de Jésus de nouvelles spiritualités face au matérialisme de la modernité. L’échec des utopies politiques dans leur désir de soumettre l’homme aux transcendances terrestres n’est que partiel. La foi meurtrie dérègle la mécanique humaine : incapables de croire sans comprendre nous arpentons les chemins de l’Histoire en quête de faits. Les mythes sont rationalisés mais entre les strates mythologiques et l’écran des hypothèses exégétiques, connaître le Jésus historique reste utopique. La résurgence de l’imaginaire biblique au sein d’une société prétendue laïque prouve la résonance des Testaments dans l’esprit des auteurs contemporains qui voient dans l’épopée christique un sujet d’écriture unique relevant de l’histoire et du mythe. Les écrivains cherchent à élucider le mystère des origines de la geste néo-testamentaire. Il n’est plus question de réfutation ou de questionnement mais d’une dialectique visant à surmonter les incohérences des évangiles pour établir des hypothèses recevables. Chacune à leur manière les réécritures de Michael Moorcock, « Voici l’homme », Anthony Burgess, « L’homme de Nazareth » et Franco Mimmi, « Notre agent en Judée », portent un regard neuf sur la vie du Nazaréen. Entre bouffées hérétiques et réaffirmation du dogme, le Christ quitte son carcan religieux pour acquérir une stature humaine
With the demise of God in the Nineteenth century and the Twentieth shaken by cruelty, the West is re-examining its Utopian ideas of liberation and is turning to Eastern spirituality. While the biblical interpretation turns away from the historical truth of Christ in favour of a mythological construction of his life, thanks to Jesus the New Age view brings new spiritualities to counter the materialism of modernity. The failure of the Utopian political systems intended to subject man to terrestrial transcendence is only partial. Faith recovers with difficulty from the combat and the entire mechanism of human existence is upset unable to believe without understanding we tread the paths of History in search of facts. Myths are rationalized but between the layers of mythology and the barrier of exegetic assumptions, to know the historical Jesus remains utopian. The modern resurgence of the biblical ideal within a supposedly secular society proves the resonance of the Testaments in the spirit of contemporary authors who see in the christic saga a unique subject of writing arising from history and myth. Exegetic writer-novelists seek to elucidate the mystery of the origins of the neo-testamentary epic. It is no longer a question of refutation or questioning but of an exchange designed to overcome the inconsistencies of the Gospels to construct acceptable hypotheses. The rewritings by Michael Moorcock, “Behold the man”, by Anthony Burgess, “Jesus-Christ and the love game” and Franco Mimmi’s, “Our agent in Judea”, do each in its own manner provide a new perspective on what could have been the life of the Nazarene. Between heretical outbursts and the reaffirmation of dogma, Christ is freed from his religious straitjacket and acquires a human dimension

Den Anspruch, Philosoph zu sein hat Michel Foucault nur gelegentlich erhoben, gleichwohl ist aus vielen Stellen seiner Schriften und aus seinen Interviews klar, daß er als solcher verstanden werden muß. Die meisten seiner Bücher sind historische Arbeiten, immer allerdings mit einer aktuellen Erkenntnisabsicht verfaßt: als "Archäologien", "Genealogien" und "Problematisierungen" gehören sie dem Projekt einer "Geschichte der Gegenwart" an, dem sich Foucault verschrieben hat. Heute liegt sein Oeuvre, das in Deutschland relativ spät, ab den 70er Jahren aber immer zügiger übersetzt wurde, in Einzelausgaben so gut wie vollständig vor und hat inzwischen zu rückblickenden Betrachtungen eingeladen, die den polemischen Ton druch die Bemühung um eingehendere Lektüre abschwächen. Seit dem Tod des Denkers ist ein Abstand aufgetan, der es ermöglicht, Verständnis und Kritik allein an den Texten zu üben.
