Perfection? - Recreating the Human is an exhibition of recent works of art by Orlan, Patricia Piccinini, Margi Geerlinks and Jake and Dinos Chapman. Each of the artists engages, in various ways, with issues relating to biotechnology and the body. The convergence of technology and the body arouses both utopian desires and dystopian nightmares; many of these desires and fears are prefigured in ancient myth and legend. The artists and artworks are therefore discussed with reference to reoccurring tropes from both ancient myth and science fiction.

Conformément à l’article 46 de la Convention européenne des droits de l’homme, les États contractants s’engagent à se conformer aux arrêts définitifs de la Cour européenne des droits de l’homme. Il ressort toutefois de la jurisprudence de la Cour que ses décisions sont « déclaratoires pour l’essentiel » et que, par cela, une liberté de choix des moyens à utiliser pour s’acquitter de l’obligation d’exécuter la décision, est laissée à l’État défendeur. En tout état de cause, le sens de l’exécution des arrêts de la Cour demeurerait paradoxal s’il fallait s’arrêter à accepter à la fois que l’État doive exécuter la décision européenne tout en ayant le choix libre de la manière d’y parvenir. Un tel raccourci aurait en effet pour conséquence que les décisions de la Cour soient imparfaitement ou seulement partiellement exécutées dans la mesure où, d’une part, le but consistant à l’exécution de la décision est vaguement précisé et où, d’autre part, la liberté de choix est, quant à elle, expresse. La doctrine de la marge d’appréciation de l’État apporte ainsi une flexibilité nécessaire dans la délimitation des rôles de la Cour et ceux de l’État défendeur pour une meilleure exécution des décisions européennes. A cet effet, le double effet de la décision européenne n’a de sens que s’il est admis que l’État dispose, certes, d’une marge d’appréciation dans l’exécution de la décision de la Cour, mais que les limites de cette marge sont posées par la Cour elle-même, dans sa décision. Il faut dès lors systématiquement partir de la décision de la Cour qui doit préciser ce en quoi consiste l’exécution de celle-ci, et donc ce en quoi consiste la réparation de la violation de la Convention, afin de déterminer si la marge d’appréciation de l’État, au stade de l’exécution de la décision, est plutôt large ou plutôt étroite. La liberté du choix de l’État défendeur en matière des mesures à prendre pour exécuter la décision selon les attentes de la Cour, se rapportera ainsi à une gamme de choix prédéfinie dans le cadre de la décision, et ce, dépendamment de la nature de la violation de la Convention ou encore de la gravité des conséquences de telle violation. En somme, plus la gamme de choix de mesures étatiques est précise, plus il y a de chances que la décision soit mieux exécutée. L’essentiel du travail consiste donc à essayer d’identifier les critères de détermination de l’étendue de la marge d’appréciation de l’État dans l’exécution de la décision de la Cour. Cependant, un tel exercice ne peut être mené à bien sans tout d’abord définir la notion même de « marge d’appréciation » qui, même si elle a déjà été employée par la Cour et par une partie de la doctrine, n’a pas reçu une définition convaincante, ou encore, a souvent été indistinctement associée à la notion de « marge de manœuvre », au « principe de subsidiarité », ou même à la souveraineté, alors qu’elle ne saurait s’y confondre<br>In accordance with Article 46 of the European Convention on Human Rights, the Contracting Parties undertake to abide by the final judgment of the European Court of Human Rights. It is however apparent from the Court’s case-law that its decisions are “essentially declaratory” and, by that, a freedom to choose the means to be used to fulfill the obligation to execute the decision is given to the respondent State. In any event, the sense of the execution of the Court’s decisions would remain paradoxical if we were to stop at accepting at the same time that a State must execute the European decision while having the free choice in the manner to achieve so. Such a shortcut would lead to a poor execution of the decisions of the Court in so far as, on one hand, the purpose of the enforcement of the decision is vaguely specified and, on the other hand, freedom of choice is expressly precise. The doctrine of the State's margin of appreciation thus gives the flexibility needed in delimiting the roles of the Court and those of the respondent State for the purpose of a better implementation of European decisions. To that end, the dual effect of the European decision only makes sense if it is accepted that the State indeed enjoys a margin of appreciation in the execution of the Court’s decision but that the limits of such margin are laid by the Court itself, in its decision. It is therefore necessary to systematically start from the decision of the Court which must specify what the expected execution is, and therefore what the compensation for the violation of the Convention should be, in order to determine whether the margin of appreciation of a State, at the stage of implementation of the decision, is rather broad or rather narrow. The freedom of choice of the respondent State as to the measures to be taken to implement the decision according to the expectations of the Court will thus relate to a range of choices predefined in the decision, depending on the nature of the violation of the Convention or the gravity of the consequences of such violation. In short, the more precise the ranges of choices of measures are, the more likely it is that the decision will be better executed. The essence of the work is therefore to try to identify the criteria for determining the extent of the State’s margin of appreciation in the execution of the Court’s decision. However, such an exercise cannot be carried out without first defining the very notion of “margin of appreciation” which, even if it has already been used by the Court and by a part of the doctrine, has not received a convincing definition, or has often been indistinctly associated with the notion of “margin of manoeuver”, the “principle of subsidiarity”, or even sovereignty, while it cannot be confused with them

Cette étude doctorale a consisté à décrire la dynamique géochimique de deux pockmarks à hydrates de gaz de la marge africaine en considérant deux approches différentes. La première zone d’étude, appelée Preowei, est située au large du Nigéria. Elle est caractérisée par un grand nombre de pockmarks de tailles différentes, plus ou moins proche les uns des autres. Les analyses géochimiques des échantillons de fluides interstitiels, combinées aux données géophysiques (séismiques) ont permis de mieux comprendre le schéma de migration des hydrocarbures pour un ensemble composé de quatre pockmarks très rapprochés. L’utilisation de ces données géochimiques dans un modèle de transport- réaction a conduit à une datation de plusieurs séquences de libération de gaz au sein de ces structures. Un schéma conceptuel décrivant les processus de formation et d’évolution temporelle des pockmarks a été proposé pour synthétiser les conclusions obtenues. Finalement, cette étude a montré que l’ensemble des pockmarks étudiés sont actifs depuis 2700 ans, qu’ils sont en phase de formation d’hydrates pour certains, et de carbonates pour d’autres. La deuxième structure étudiée est le pockmark Regab. Il est situé au large du Gabon, au nord du canyon sous-marin alimenté par le fleuve Congo. Il est caractérisé par la présence d’hydrates affleurant et une faune abondante et très variée sur toute sa surface. L’originalité de ce travail a été d’étudier la distribution de la mégafaune présente sur ce pockmark en fonction de la nature des fluides qui migrent dans le sédiment superficiel, et qui est libérés dans la colonne d’eau. Une attention particulière a été portée au méthane car c’est un élément central dans le cycle énergétique des microorganismes qui vivent en symbiose avec cette mégafaune. Trois nouveaux habitats ont été étudiés. Les données obtenues, associées à celle de la littérature ouverte, renforcent les conclusions des travaux antérieurs. Les Mytilidés ont besoin de très fortes concentrations de méthane pour se développer. Elles colonisent les zones de sortie de bulles et celle caractérisées par des hydrates affleurants. Les tapis bactériens sont associés à des zones où l’oxydation anaérobique du méthane se déroule dans le sédiment superficiel, avec une méthanogenèse dans la couche sous-jacente. Les Vésicomydé polychètes vivent dans des zones pauvres en méthane et sont très sensibles à sa variation de concentration<br>The present work describes the dynamics of two pockmark areas, off West Africa. The intention is to propose two different approaches to study the relationships between fluid migration and pockmarks. The first investigated area corresponds to a pockmark cluster called Preowei, located off Nigeria. Geochemical analyses and modeling were combined with seismic data to detail the hydrocarbon migration pattern at this area, with implication on both the pockmark formation and the evolution of their morphology. The proposed interpretation seeks to identify the conceptual bases of pockmark evolution over time at this area. It is argued that the cluster has been active for at least 2700 years, and it is still at the stage of hydrate formation for some pockmarks and carbonate formation for other. The second investigated pockmark, called Regab, is located off Gabon. It is a giant pockmark of 800-m diameter, characterized by an ecosystem rich in fauna, with a large variety of living species. The main core of the work done on this pockmark was focused on finding a link between the fluid chemistry and the spatial distribution of the living communities which populate it. L’objectif de ma thèse est de mieux comprendre le fonctionnement de deux proxies de température de surface de l’océan (SST), les indices Uk’37 et TEX86, notamment en terme de saison et de profondeur de production des alcènones et des tétraéthers sur lesquels ils reposent, au cours des 160 000 dernières années au niveau de la marge ibérique. L’originalité de ce projet de thèse réside dans sa double approche, avec d’une part l’acquisition des enregistrements sédimentaires, et d’autre part l’utilisation d’un outil de modélisation régionale couplée physique-biogéochimie pour simuler ces proxies sous 3 modes climatiques : au présent, lors du dernier maximum glaciaire, et lors d’événements de Heinrich. La confrontation des résultats des biomarqueurs avec ceux de tests de scénarios de production par la modélisation ont conduit aux conclusions suivantes. L’Uk’37 enregistre bien des SSTs moyennes annuelles, alors que le TEX86 présente a priori des températures beaucoup trop élevées pour cette zone. La formulation d’une calibration régionale pour le TEX86 permet d’obtenir des SSTs moyennes annuelles cohérentes. Le meilleur endroit de la marge ibérique pour appliquer ces deux paléothermomètres est le site de Shackleton. Après analyse fine des timings des signaux multiproxies, le TEX86 semble être produit à des profondeurs intermédiaires, potentiellement par des communautés d’Archées d’origine méditerranéenne. Les variations de gradients thermiques latitudinaux ont été quantifiées, et des réorganisations de masses d’eaux de surface et intermédiaire au niveau de la marge ibérique ont été envisagées selon le climat glaciaire/interglaciaire lors des évènements de type Heinrich<br>My PhD project aims at better understanding the functioning of both organic proxies of sea surface temperature (SST), Uk’37 and TEX86, especially in terms of season and depth of alkenone and tetraether production, over the last 160 000 years on the Iberian Margin. The originality of this project lies in its double approach: on the one hand, with the acquisition of Uk’37 and TEX86 sedimentary records from the Iberian Margin, and on the other hand with the use of a coupled physics-biogeochemistry regional model to simulate these temperature proxies for 3 climate modes: at present, during the last glacial maximum, and during Heinrich Stadials. The comparison of biomarker results with those from modeling tests of production scenarios provided the following conclusions. Uk’37 does record annual mean SSTs, whereas TEX86 shows a priori too high temperature for this area. The formulation of a regional calibration for TEX86 index enables to obtain coherent past annual mean SSTs. The best location to apply both paleothermometers on the Iberian Margin is the Shackleton site. After refined analysis of multiproxy signal timings, TEX86 production seems to take place at intermediate depth, potentially by archaean communities coming from the Mediterranean Sea. Latitudinal thermal gradient variations are quantified, and glacial/interglacial surface and intermediate water masses reorganizations during 'Heinrich like' events are considered

Le principe de subsidiarité, en droit de la Convention européenne, est un principe empreint d’ambiguïtés. D’origine prétorienne, il ne fait l’objet d’aucune définition formelle dans les textes ou la jurisprudence afférente et se voit ainsi marqué d’une indétermination sémantique et juridique certaine. Doté d’une double dimension à la fois procédurale et matérielle, il n’en reste pas moins un principe fondamental du droit européen, un principe qui structure, d’une part, l’organisation et le fonctionnement même du système et guide, d’autre part, l’interprétation et le contrôle du juge de Strasbourg. Parce que naturellement ambigu mais néanmoins directeur du droit européen, le principe de subsidiarité se présente donc comme un principe souple et malléable, par conséquent, adaptable. L’analyse de sa mise en oeuvre dans la jurisprudence européenne met ainsi en exergue l’inconstance et la variabilité d’application du principe, à la libre disposition du juge strasbourgeois. Mais analysée à la lumière du contexte actuel d’un engorgement sans précédent du système et donc d’une réaffirmation urgente de son caractère subsidiaire, l’utilisation fluctuante du principe s’apprécie sous un jour nouveau, visant à faire de la subsidiarité un principe non plus garant des libertés nationales mais désormais source d’un encadrement de celles-ci. Parce que moteur d’une responsabilisation accrue des Etats membres, le principe de subsidiarité apparaît donc comme une pièce maîtresse de la politique jurisprudentielle du juge européen<br>As part of the European Convention, the principle of subsidiarity is marked by ambiguity. Originating from judges, it has not been formally defined in legal texts nor in any related jurisprudence and is therefore characterized by a semantic and legal indeterminacy. Featuring both a procedural and a tangible dimension, it remains a fundamental principle of European law. On the one hand, it structures, the system’s organization and operations. On the other hand, it guides the court of Strasbourg’s interpretation and review. Naturally ambiguous but still guiding European law, the principle of subsidiarity is presented as a flexible and malleable principle, and therefore adaptable. The analysis of its implementation in the European jurisprudence highlights its inconsistency and variability at the free disposal of the court of Strasbourg. However, in the light of the current context of an unprecedented saturation of the system and therefore of an urgent reassertion of its subsidiary nature, a fluctuating use of the principle is assessed differently to make it not a guarantee of national liberties, but a guide for them. As a driving force for increased accountability of member states, the principle of subsidiarity appears to be essential to the judicial policy of the European court

Vad är magiskt? Och hur kan magi skapas på en scen? I mitt examensarbete var jag i roll av ljusdesigner med i skapandet av en barnföreställning. Föreställningen befann sig i gränslandet mellan ljus- och ljudinstallation, koreografi och fysisk teater. Föreställningens ljus, liksom tingen, koreografin och ljudet, var föreställningens grund i berättelse och upplevelse. Ett av mina mål med ljuset var att det skulle se okomplicerat ut för att inspirera barnen att själva utforska och leka med ljus. Därför användes inga konventionella teaterlampor utan små, batteridrivna LED- och glödlampsarmaturer och ficklampor. Föreställningen var vår scenkonstgrupps slutgiltiga mål och arbetades fram genom konstnärligt forskande. Således var det först och främst genom den jag skulle nå den nya kunskap som beskrivs och tolkas i denna text. Vår arbetsprocess var estetisk och fritt undersökande snarare än teoretisk och planerad. Uppsatsens frågeställningar fanns dock delvis formulerade när det sceniska arbetet påbörjades men omformulerades och preciserades under processens gång. Den konstnärliga forskningen kompletterades med teori, referensmaterial och två fokus grupper, en med förskolebarn och en med aktörer inom scenkonst, med huvudfrågeställning -Vad är magiskt?. Fokusgrupperna blev i slutändan ingen stor del av den kunskapande processen. Materialet var otillräckligt analyserat och insamlades i för sent skede. Uppsatsens analysmaterialet bestod av de problem jag ställdes inför i vår konstnärliga process och min väg till att finna lösningar på dessa. Materialet bestod också av jämförelser och kopplingar mellan referensmaterialen och vår egna arbetsprocess. Utifrån dessa kunde jag analysera och beskriva vårt tillvägagångssätt och göra slutsatser utifrån det. Uppsatsens frågeställningar förändrades utifrån det som skedde i vårt experimenterande arbete. Att ljus och mörker i samverkan fascinerar och lockar till lek och upptäckarlusta är efter detta arbete tydligt. Att ting, för oss, har en inneboende magi är också uppenbart för mig. Det vi som aktörer således behöver göra är att belysa och visa upp denna redan befintliga magi. Påminna publiken om saker den redan vet men kanske glömt bort. Vår uppgift från scenen är detta: Att skapa och bibehålla en närvaro och kontakt mellan publik och aktörer. Detta är väsentligt för att magi överhuvudtaget ska kunna ske. Finns närvaro och kontakt kan vi börja arbeta med att bygga upp en förväntan, göra publiken trygg, ge publiken möjlighet att hålla fokus på den upplevelsen vi vill förmedla. Ge dem tid att begrunda och smälta det de upplevelserna och de magiska ögonblicken. Lyckas vi med detta så har vi gjort mycket.

Support vector machines (SVMs) and correlation filters (CFs) are popular for automatic target recognition (ATR) and other computer vision tasks. SVMs are designed to maximize the separation between two classes in some feature space. SVMs are popular for classification (determining the class-label of a target) and generalize well for targets not in the training set, but SVMs are not specifically designed for localization (finding where a target is). When using SVMs, regions of interest (ROIs) are usually first extracted using some other detector before SVMs are applied. CFs accurately localize the target of interest in a large scene but their classification performance may not be as good (compared to SVMs) for targets not in the training set. In this thesis we introduced new linear CFs by combining the criteria used in state-of-the-art CFs to improve performance. Using our improved linear CF designs, we present a new type of classifier called the Maximum Margin Correlation Filters (MMCFs), which combine the generalization capabilities of SVMs and the shiftinvariance of correlation filters (CFs), i.e., MMCF is also invariant to shifts between the training images and the query image, thereby avoiding the need for image registration and detection before SVM-based classification. We extend our work to quadratic correlation filters (QCFs) and present the Quadratic MMCF (QMMCF) and show its relation to the second order polynomial Kernel SVM (referred to as Quadratic SVM (QSVM) in this thesis). We extend the capabilities of CFs and therefore of MMCFs and QMMCFs to include vector features (as opposed to scalar features, i.e., gray-scaled pixels) in order to use features such as the Histogram of Oriented Gradients (HOG).We test the efficacy of the our designs on real data and show improvement over linear and quadratic CFs and linear and quadratic SVMs.

Cette etude traite de la relation entre les hispano-americains et les europeens qui est fondee sur la fascination qu'exercent sur les elites du nouveau continent la culture, le mode de vie et les modeles litteraires ou philosophiques occidentaux. Ceci peut etre explique en partie par l'envie de s'integrer au vaste mouvement de progres et de modernite qui caracterise les dernieres annees du xixe siecle. Cette attitude des intellectuels americains les a conduits a tenir leur propre culture pour inferieure, et a se chercher des exemples dans la culture europeenne alors dominante, ce qui va provoquer les critiques de certains intellectuels hispano-americains. Jose marti aspire a une imitation intelligente et non pas a une dependance aveugle des productions etrangeres. Pour jose marti, imitation rime avec assimilation et independance. Donc, l'imitation et l'inspiration des modeles etrangers doivent etre limitees et utiles, et non pas steriles et caricaturales, afin d'aboutir a une assimilation intelligente et feconde donnant lieu a une litterature proprement hispano-americaine, une creation authentique qui affirmera l'independance de l'amerique latine<br>This study deab with the relationship between the hispano-americans and the europeans based on the fascination that the culture, the way of life and the literary or philosophical patterns of west exert on the elite of the new continent. This can be partly explained by the desire to be integrated into the wide movement of progress and modernity which characterizes the last years of the nineteenth century. This behaviour induces the american intellectuals to consider their own culture as inferior and to take as an example the european culture, dominant at that time. This will provoque the critic of the cuban jose marti who aims at an intelligent imitation rather than at a blind dependence. For him, the imitation and the inspiration of the foreign patterns have to be limited and useful in order to result in an intelligent, productive assimilation leading to an absolutely hispano-american literature, an authentic creation which will make the independence of latin america felt

L’activité magmatique miocène en Petite Kabylie s’exprime par la mise en place de roches plutoniques et volcaniques de composition majoritairement riche en K ainsi que moyennement riches en K. Ces roches forment des pointements dispersés sur près de 130 km le long de la marge méditerranéenne de l’Algérie. Dans les deux secteurs d’étude : la Kabylie de Collo et l’Ouest Edough-Cap de Fer, elles recoupent les empilements de nappes de socle et de flyschs crétacés et numidiens. De nouvelles datations U-Pb sur zircons et K-Ar sur roche totale et minéraux séparés ont permis de fixer à 17 Ma le début de l’activité magmatique post-collisionnelle à affinité calco-alcaline riche en K2O. Ces âges obtenus sur le batholithe granitique de Bougaroun (200 km2) sont les plus anciens jamais obtenus dans toute la Marge Méditerranéenne du Maghreb. L’activité magmatique s’étend vers l’Est et atteint la zone ouest-Edough-Cap de Fer vers ~16 Ma puis se poursuit de façon intermittente dans les deux secteurs d’étude à ~15 Ma, 14-13 Ma jusqu’à 11 Ma avec la mise en place de corps filoniens mafiques et felsiques en Kabylie de Collo. En outre, un âge oligocène supérieur (27.0 ± 3.0 Ma et 23.3 ± 3.2 Ma) a été mesuré par la méthode Ar/Ar sur amphiboles des gabbros à caractère océanique du Cap Bougaroun s.s (Kabylie de Collo). Les nouvelles données géochimiques et isotopiques ont permis de mettre en évidence deux sources pour le magmatisme dans les deux secteurs étudiés. Une première source mantellique appauvrie, non modifiée par un composant de subduction qui est à l’origine des gabbros à caractère océanique du Cap Bougaroun s.s et de Bou Maïza au Sud de l’Edough. Ceux-ci pourraient représenter des reliques du stade de rifting d’âge oligocène supérieur en prélude à l’ouverture en position arrière-arc du bassin algérien. Une deuxième source enrichie en terres rares légères et en éléments mobiles est représentée par le manteau lithosphérique subcontinental kabyle précédemment métasomatisé durant la subduction à vergence nord de la lithosphère océanique téthysienne au Paléogène. Les magmas mafiques enrichis en LREE issues de cette source ont ensuite évolué par cristallisation fractionnée et contamination crustale pour former les roches intermédiaires et felsiques de la marge est-algérienne. Nous proposons un modèle tectono-magmatique de rupture de slab téthysien associée à une délamination crustale au niveau des bordures des deux lithosphères continentales africaine et kabyle. A 17 Ma, le flux thermique d’origine asthénosphérique ascendant à travers la déchirure du slab téthysien induit la fusion du manteau téthysien. Les magmas mafiques calco-calcalins moyennement potassiques subissent des échanges chimiques avec le socle africain durant leur ascension à travers celui-ci, générant les magmas intermédiaires et felsiques calco-alcalins riches en K caractérisés par une importante signature crustale<br>The Miocene igneous activity in Lesser Kabylia includes a ~130 km-long EW-trending lineament that extends along the eastern Algerian margin from Kabylie de Collo to Ouest-Edough-Cap de Fer area. It includes mostly medium-K to High-K calc-alkaline plutonic and volcanic rocks. In the studied area, these magmatic rocks crosscut and/or overlie the inner zones of the Maghrebides represented by basement and Kabylian cretaceous and Numidian flyschs nappes. New U-Pb dating on zircons and K-Ar ages on whole rocks and separated minerals document a 17 Ma onset for the post-collisional K-rich calc-alkaline magmatism. These Upper Burdigalian ages obtained on the Bougaroun pluton are the oldest presently identified for Krich calc-alkaline rocks in the whole 1200 km-long EW trending magmatic belt located along the Mediterranean coast of Maghreb. However, according to new K-Ar ages, magmatic activity started in Ouest Edough zone at ~16 then persisted intermittently in the two studied areas at ~15.5 Ma, 14-13 Ma and stopped at ~11 Ma, with the emplacement of mafic and felsic dykes in Kabylie de Collo. In addition, we measured older (Upper Oligocene) Ar-Ar hornblende ages of 27.0 ± 3.0 Ma and 23.3 ± 3.2 Ma on LREE-depleted gabbros outcropping at Cap Bougaroun sensu stricto. According to our new geochemical and isotopic data, we distinguish two sources for magmatic rocks in the studied area: a depleted mantle source which could represent the ambient asthenosphere still not modified by the subduction processes at the time of emplacement of the Upper Oligocene LREE-depleted gabbros. The latter could be related to the Upper-Oligocene rifting before the back-arc crust formation in Algerian basin or to dyke systems or gabbroic intrusions crosscutting the stretched Kabylian continental crust. An enriched mantle source modified by a subduction component (melt or fluid) escaping from a northward-dipping subducted Tethyan oceanic lithosphere. The enriched mafic magmas are believed to come from this metasomatized mantle and are genetically related to the differentiated rocks through crystal fractionation and assimilation of large amounts of crustal lithologies, during their ascent through the African continental crust. We propose a tectono-magmatic model involving an Early Miocene Tethyan slab breakoff combined with delamination of the edges of the African and Kabylian continental lithospheres. At 17 Ma, the asthenospheric thermal flux upwelling through the slab tear induced the thermal erosion of the Kabylian lithospheric mantle metasomatized during the previous subduction event and triggered its partial melting. We attribute the strong trace element and isotopic crustal signature of Bougaroun felsic rocks to extensive interactions between ascending mafic melts and the African crust underthrust beneath the Kabylie de Collo basement

Les marges continentales, passives ou actives, sont la principale voie de transfert sédimentaire entre le plateau continental et le bassin océanique profond et les plaines abyssales. Les pentes continentales sont le siège de processus d'érosion/dépôt sous le contrôle de transfert de flux particulaires continentaux chenalisés par des structures érosives, telles que les canyons sous‐marins, puis redistribues à l'ensemble de la marge. Les canyons érodent fortement les pentes continentales et contribuent à l'évolution de leur morphologie au cours du temps. On retrouve cependant des canyons sous‐marins qui ne sont pas en relation avec la présence d'un réseau fluviatile. De ce fait, la formation et l'évolution des canyons sous‐marins sont encore peu comprises. Ce travail de thèse s'intéresse aux processus de formation et d'évolution de six canyons sous-marins sur la Marge Ouest du Bassin Ligure et à dix systèmes de canyons sur la Marge Calabro-Ionienne. Le but de cette étude est de contraindre les principales caractéristiques morphométriques (longueur, largeur, profondeur, inclinaison, sinuosité), morphologique (éléments architecturaux, configuration) des canyons, de caractériser leur évolution amont‐aval et d'analyser leur structure interne, afin de mieux comprendre l'origine des canyons sous‐marins, leurs mécanismes de construction et leur évolution au cours du temps en relation avec le contexte géologique régional et leurs potentiels bassins versants subaérien. Pour cela, une approche basée sur une analyse morpho-bathymétrique et géophysiques a été mise en œuvre à partir de relevés bathymétriques complets des marges, de profils de sismiques, de Chirp et de SAR.

La marge NE Américaine est une des marges les mieux étudiées au monde, elle a fait l’objet de plusieurs études géophysiques. En comparaison, la marge africaine reste peu étudiée car uniquement deux campagnes océanographiques y ont été menées : la campagne Sismar (2001) au large de la Meseta et la campagne Dakhla (2002) au large du Sahara. La structure profonde de la marge canadienne est connue grâce aux profils de sismique grand-angle SMART-1, 2 et 3. Le premier objectif du projet MIRROR était d’acquérir des profils combinant sismique grand-angle et sismique réflexion sur un segment homologue au profil SMART-1. La comparaison entre les segments homologues de ces deux marges ayant pour but de mieux comprendre le mode d’ouverture de l'océan Atlantique Central. Une comparaison entre les modèles Sismar, Dakhla et Mirror montre que la croûte continentale est plus épaisse au nord et s'amincit vers le sud. La largeur de la zone de transition est plus étroite au sud et les profils Sismar sont localisés sur un bassin sédimentaire posé sur une croûte continentale très amincie. La comparaison avec la marge homologue montre que l'épaisseur, la structure de la croûte continentale et la zone d'amincissement sont très semblables. Par contre, il existe une zone de manteau exhumé et serpentinisé sur le profil Canadien qui n'a pas d’homologue sur la marge africaine. De plus, l'épaisseur de la croûte océanique est différente avec 8 km sur la côte africaine et seulement 3-4 km sur la marge canadienne. Plusieurs hypothèses ont été proposées pour expliquer cette différence (a) une différence d’âge entre les deux croûtes (b) un épaississement lié au passage du point chaud des Canaries (c) une accrétion asymétrique<br>The NE American margin represents one of the best studied margins in the world, it was the subject of several scientific programs. In comparison, the conjugate NW African margin remains fairly unknown, only two deep seismic cruises were acquired: the SISMAR cruise (2001) offshore the Meseta and the DAKHLA cruise (2002) offshore the Sahara. The deep structure of the Canadian margin is known due to the SMART wide-angle seismic profiles 1, 2 and 3. The first objective of the MIRROR project was to acquire combined wide-angle and deep reflection seismic data offshore a segment conjugate to the SMART-1 profile. The comparison between the homologous segments of these two margins aimed to better understand the opening mechanism of the Central Atlantic Ocean. A comparison between Sismar, Dakhla and Mirror models shows that the continental crust is thicker in the north and thins toward the south. The width of the transition zone is narrower south and Sismar profiles are located on a sedimentary basin placed on a very thinned continental crust. Comparing the Mirror profile with that of the Canadian conjugate margin (Smart 1) shows that the thickness, the structure of the continental crust and the thinning is very similar. However, zones of exhumed and serpentinized mantle were imaged along the Canadian profile that have no conjugate on the African margin. Moreover, the thickness of the oceanic crust is variable with 8 km on the African side and only 3-4 km on the Canadian margin. Several hypotheses have been proposed to explain this difference (a) an age difference between the two types of crust (b) thickening associated with the passage of the Canary hotspot (c) an asymmetric accretion or (d) an accretion at slow to ultra-slow speading centers

Cette recherche propose une étude détaillée de l'armée à Mari, royaume "des bords de l’Euphrate". Le site du palais de mari (Tell Hariri environ 12km de la frontière syro-irakienne) a fourni une très importante documentation épigraphique regroupant d'une part les archives d'état (correspondance internationale et rapports adresses au roi par les gouverneurs de province) et d'autre part les archives dites "administratives" (documents comptables relatifs à la gestion des biens du palais). La période couverte par ce corpus de textes est très courte, une trentaine d'année (1810?-1762 av. J. C. ). La première partie de ce travail aborde les questions autour de la provenance des combattants. Elle a pour objet essentiel d'étudier comment les rois de mari ont fait face à leurs besoins en hommes. On trouvera au chapitre I, une analyse détaillée des modalités du service militaire. Le chapitre II est consacré à l'étude d'une forme particulière du devoir militaire, celle qui touche les alliés et vassaux du roi. Le chapitre III fait le point sur l'organisation interne des armées. On a rassemblé ce que la documentation nous apprenait concernant l'imbrication des unités et le commandement. Ce chapitre propose également une description de la nature du service logistique rendu aux armées. L’objectif de cette thèse est de comprendre (1) si l’exhumation des roches mantelliques aux dorsales océaniques est compatible avec l’enregistrement des inversions de polarité du champ magnétique terrestre, (2) quels sont les processus associés aux anomalies magnétiques observées à l’aplomb des transitions océan-continent et (3) quelles sont les conséquences de ces processus sur les mécanismes de l’océanisation. Afin de travailler avec des données de résolution maximum, une méthode de calibration et d’interprétation des données magnétiques acquises proches du fond est développée dans le premier chapitre. Dans le deuxième chapitre, cette méthode est appliquée aux données magnétiques acquises à l’aplomb des domaines de manteau exhumé de la dorsale Sud-Ouest Indienne (SWIR). Il est ensuite montré que l’exhumation des roches mantelliques est associée à un signal magnétique de faible amplitude et de faible continuité spatiale rendant impossible l’identification des anomalies magnétiques d’accrétion océanique. De fait, il est proposé que contrairement aux basaltes, les roches mantelliques exhumées de la SWIR ne portent pas une aimantation rémanente suffisamment stable pour fossiliser la direction du champ magnétique terrestre. Dans le dernier chapitre, il est démontré que l’anomalie « J », antérieurement interprétée comme la première isochrone associée à la partie distale des marges Ibérie/Terre-Neuve, est en fait identifiée à l’aplomb d’une structure crustale particulière caractérisée par un haut topographique et un épaississement crustal. Par conséquent, il est proposé qu’un évènement magmatique majeur est à l’origine de la création de cette structure crustale et que cet événement est le déclencheur de la mise en place de la première dorsale océanique<br>The aim of this work is to constrain (1) whether exhumation of mantle rocks at mid oceanic ridges is compatible with the record of polarity reversals of the Earth magnetic field, (2) what is the origin and the processes responsible for the magnetic anomalies observed at magma-poor rifted margins and (3) what are the consequences of these processes on continental breakup. In a first part, in order to work with high-resolution data, we develop a method for calibration and interpretation of deep-tow three component magnetic data. In a second part, we apply these methods to the data acquired above the large exhumed mantle domains of the ultraslow-spreading Southwest Indian Ridge. We show that, in these areas, neither the magnetic properties of the dredge samples nor the deep-tow magnetic data are consistent with the seafloor-spreading magnetic pattern commonly observed at mid oceanic ridges. We further suggest that in contrast to mid oceanic ridges basalts the exhumed serpentinized mantle rocks do not carry a sufficiently stable remanant magnetization to produce marine magnetic anomalies. In the last part, we show that the “J” anomaly, previously interpreted as the first seafloor-spreading anomaly of the Iberia and Newfoundland passive margins, is associated with locally high topography and thickened crust. We propose that this peculiar crustal structure results from voluminous magma both erupted at the surface and added beneath the exhumed mantle domain. We therefore propose that the J anomaly did not form during seafloor spreading but instead represents a pulse of magmatism that have triggered continental breakup

La marge d'Équateur est caractérisée par un bassin avant-arc formé par un socle crétacé et une couverture de sédiments marins d'âge Crétacé à Quaternaire. Le relief de cette zone comprend d'une part la cordillère Côtière proprement dite et la plaine Côtière, située entre la cordillère Côtière et les Andes. Ce travail porte sur l'évolution et le soulèvement de la cordillère Côtière durant le Néogène. Dans un premier temps, nous avons réalisé une étude géologique régionale de la cordillère côtière. À partir de l'analyse stratigraphique et structurale des formations géologiques, nous avons réalisé une carte géologique de la cordillère côtière au 1/500 000 qui nous a permis d'effectuer pour la première fois des corrélations stratigraphique et un schéma structural à l'échelle complète de la cordillère. Dans un deuxième temps nous avons réalisé une étude géomorphologique de la zone. À partir de l'analyse de MNT, d'images satellites et aériennes nous avons défini les principales caractéristiques morphologiques de la zone d'étude. En particulier, le travail a porté principalement sur l'analyse de la géométrie du réseau hydrographique, la mesure de la géométrie des vallées et du profil en long des rivières à l'échelle de la cordillère Côtière. En complément nous avons mesuré le profil longitudinal des terrasses alluviales le long du rio Jama et analysé la morphologie des cônes alluviaux qui se déposent au pied des Andes sur la plaine Côtière. Les résultats ont permis de proposer une évolution du soulèvement de la cordillère Côtière. Les mesures des incisions relatives des rivières suggèrent que le soulèvement de la cordillère Côtière n'est pas homogène et que la cordillère est segmentée en plusieurs blocs dont les taux de soulèvement relatif sont variables: les blocs du Nord présentant les incisions les plus importantes. L'analyse des profils longitudinaux des terrasses alluviales du rio Jama montre une activité néotectonique le long des failles du système de Jama. Le taux de soulèvement estimé à partir de cette analyse est de 0.9 à 1.2 mm/ an pour le segment central de la cordillère Côtière. L'analyse du cône de Santo Domingo, situé aux pieds des Andes, révèle une importante interaction entre le soulèvement de la cordillère Côtière et le remplissage sédimentaire de la plaine côtière dont le résultat est la réorganisation du réseau hydrographique en deux grands bassins hydrographiques: Guayas au Sud et Esmeraldas au Nord. A plus long termes, la géologie et la stratigraphie montrent que la partie du Sud a subis une plus forte érosion (soulèvement ?) qu'au Nord. La mise en évidence de plusieurs discordances à l'échelle régionale montre que la cordillère Côtière s'est soulevée de façon hétérogène depuis le Plio-Pléistocène formant un grand antiforme segmenté et contrôlé par des failles régionales qui présentent une direction proche de la direction du mouvement vers le NE-NNE du bloc Nord-Andin.

In this thesis we study the problem of learning under uncertainty using the statistical learning paradigm. We rst propose a linear maximum margin classi er that deals with uncertainty in data input. More speci cally, we reformulate the standard Support Vector Machine (SVM) framework such that each training example can be modeled by a multi-dimensional Gaussian distribution described by its mean vector and its covariance matrix { the latter modeling the uncertainty. We address the classi cation problem and de ne a cost function that is the expected value of the classical SVM cost when data samples are drawn from the multi-dimensional Gaussian distributions that form the set of the training examples. Our formulation approximates the classical SVM formulation when the training examples are isotropic Gaussians with variance tending to zero. We arrive at a convex optimization problem, which we solve e - ciently in the primal form using a stochastic gradient descent approach. The resulting classi er, which we name SVM with Gaussian Sample Uncertainty (SVM-GSU), is tested on synthetic data and ve publicly available and popular datasets; namely, the MNIST, WDBC, DEAP, TV News Channel Commercial Detection, and TRECVID MED datasets. Experimental results verify the e ectiveness of the proposed method. Next, we extended the aforementioned linear classi er so as to lead to non-linear decision boundaries, using the RBF kernel. This extension, where we use isotropic input uncertainty and we name Kernel SVM with Isotropic Gaussian Sample Uncertainty (KSVM-iGSU), is used in the problems of video event detection and video aesthetic quality assessment. The experimental results show that exploiting input uncertainty, especially in problems where only a limited number of positive training examples are provided, can lead to better classi cation, detection, or retrieval performance. Finally, we present a preliminary study on how the above ideas can be used under the deep convolutional neural networks learning paradigm so as to exploit inherent sources of uncertainty, such as spatial pooling operations, that are usually used in deep networks.

We motivate large margin classification from statistical learning theory and review two broad categories of large margin classifiers, namely Support Vector Machines which operate in a batch setting and Perceptron-like algorithms which operate in an incremental setting and are driven by their mistakes. We subsequently examine in detail the class of Perceptron-like large margin classifiers. The algorithms belonging to this category are further classified on the basis of criteria such as the type of the misclassification condition or the behaviour of the effective learning rate, i.e. the ratio of the learning rate to the length of the weight vector, as a function of the number of mistakes. Moreover, their convergence is examined with a prominent role in such an investigation played by the notion of stepwise convergence which offers the possibility of a rather unified approach. Whenever possible, mistake bounds implying convergence in a finite number of steps are derived and discussed. Two novel families of approximate maximum margin algorithms called CRAMMA and MICRA are introduced and analysed theoretically. In addition, in order to deal with linearly inseparable data a soft margin approach for Perceptron-like large margin classifiers is discussed. Finally, a series of experiments on artificial as well as real-world data employing the newly introduced algorithms are conducted allowing a detailed comparative assessment of their performance with respect to other well-known Perceptron-like large margin classifiers and state-of-the-art Support Vector Machines.

Grâce aux travaux de la Cour européenne des droits de l'homme et la Cour interaméricaine des droits de l'homme s'est consolidé un système de normes minimales des droits et des libertés qui, au fil du temps, à assurer la protection de l'individu d'une façon intégrale et quelle que soit son orientation sexuelle : aussi bien dans la sphère intime (sa vie privée et familiale) que dans la sphère publique, sur les plan politique et social, là où, en définitif leur identité est construite. Ceci, cependant, n'a pas été un processus pacifique, ni facile. Les conquêtes des droits, et leur protection se sont déroulés dans un scénario caractérisé par une certaine confrontation entre les Etats, jaloux de leur souveraineté et les tribunaux internationaux, garants de l'interprétation orthodoxe des droits et libertés énoncés dans les conventions. Pour cette raison, nous pouvons nous demander : quels sont les mécanismes que les juges supranationaux ont utilisés dans la pratique afin de limiter le pouvoir des autorités de l’État ? jusqu'à quel point ils ont la légitimité de le faire ? Pour répondre à ces questions, nous avons analysé les étapes et/ou les arrêts importants faisant jurisprudence qui ont été des éléments clés dans la reconnaissance du statut juridique des citoyens homosexuels. Nous avons examiné aussi, si ce statut est le résultat d'un consensus entre les États au sein du Conseil de l'Europe et l'Organisation des États américains ou, au contraire, elle est le résultat d'une interprétation indépendante des conventions internationales par les tribunaux de ces organisations<br>Thanks to the work of the European Court of human rights and the Inter-American Court of human rights it has been consolidated a system of minimum standards of rights and freedoms which, over time, endeavours to ensure the protection of the individual in a comprehensive way and regardless of his/her sexual orientation: in the most intimate sphere (his/her private and family life), as well as, in the public sphere, at political and social levels, where, ultimately, their identities are constructed. This process, however, was not peaceful or easy. The struggle for rights and their protection takes places in an international scene characterised by a certain confrontation between States, jealous of their sovereignty and the international courts, guarantors of the orthodox interpretation of the rights and freedoms contained in the conventions. For this reason, we might ask ourselves: what are the mechanisms that the supranational judges have used to limit the power of the authorities of the State? To what extent the international courts are entitled to exercise this control? To answer these questions, we have analysed the steps and/or the leading cases which have entailed the key elements in the recognition of the legal status of homosexual citizens. We also have examined whether this status is the result of a consensus between States within the Council of Europe and the Organization of American States or, on the contrary, it is the result of an independent interpretation of international conventions by the courts of these organisations

En Méditerranée orientale, la paleo-marge sud de la Téthys a subit des épisodes polyphasés d'extension pendant le Paléozoïque et le Mésozoïque. Cette marge a été postérieurement inversée pendant des épisodes compressifs et discontinus depuis le Crétacé supérieur liés à la convergence entre l'Afrique et l'Eurasie.La marge Cyrénaïque (nord-est Libye) a enregistré ces épisodes extensifs et compressifs. Elle permet donc l'analyse des inversions et de leurs relations avec les évènements ayant eu lieu le long de la frontière de la plaque Africaine (i.e. subduction Hellenique).Le bassin de Sirte, adjacent à la Cyrénaïque montre une direction oblique, ne présente pas la même déformation et est caractérisé par une subsidence continue depuis le Mésozoïque.Des données de sismique (réflexion) combinées à des rapports et des corrélations de puits, nous ont permis d'examiner et de discuter les interactions entre la Cyrénaïque, le bassin de Sirte et les domaines profonds (i.e. bassin Ionien).Ce travail permet de mieux préciser les différents épisodes d'extension, de contraindre les évènements compressifs enregistrés par la région Cyrénaïque, d'observer les structures du bassin de Sirte et de clarifier en partie son évolution.Finalement cette partie de la marge est intégrée dans le cadre géodynamique régional de la Téthys sud et permet de discuter l'âge ainsi que le mécanisme d'ouverture pour la branche orientale de la Méditerranée<br>In the Eastern Mediterranean, the South-Tethys paleo-margin experienced poly-phased rifting episodes during Paleozoic and Mesozoic times. This margin has been subsequently inverted by discontinuous events occurring since the Late Cretaceous as a consequence of the Africa-Eurasia convergence.The Cyrenaica margin (northeast Libya) has recorded these extensional and compressional events. It thus gives the opportunity to analyse these inversion and their possible causal links with events occurring along the plate boundary (i.e. within the Hellenic subduction).The adjacent Sirt Basin, follows an oblique direction, did not suffer the same deformation as Cyrenaica and has recorded a continuous subsidence since the Mesozoic.Offshore seismic data combined with well correlations have permitted us to investigate and discuss the interactions between Cyrenaica, Sirt Basin and the deeper domains (i.e. Ionian Basin).We were able to document the different rift episodes, better constrain the compressional events on Cyrenaica, observe characteristics of the architecture of the Sirt Basin and clarify part of its evolution.Finally we integrate this part of the margin, in the regional geodynamic frame of the East Mediterranean branch of the Neo-Tethys by discussing the timing and mechanism which led to its opening

L'analyse d'un réseau dense de profils de sismique réflection permet d'établir une stratigraphie acoustique détaillée de la marge continentale profonde de ,Côte d'Ivoire-Ghana, et de mettre en évidence les principales caractéristiques structurales de cette marge transformante: zone étroite extrêmement déformée au sommet de la pente continentale, faisceaux décrochants dextres à l'intérieur et à la lim ite Nord de la ride marginale, bassins asymétriques localement repris en compression (plissement) dans le bassin ivoirien profond. Parallèlement, les structures associées à une marge transformante sont étud iées grâce à une modélisation expérimentale: dans un modèle analogue à une croûte continentale d'épaisseur. constante, le mouvement transformant est accommodé par une "zone principale de déplacement", zone de cisaillement dont la déformation est analysée en détail, y compris pour des déplacements importants. Par contre, à l'intersection de segments de marges transformant et en extension apparait une "terminaison en queue de cheval", formée de décrochements courbes qui structurent par transliition et rotation de blocs un relief analogue aux rides marginales des marges transformantes; ce relief est ultérieurement recoupée par une "zone principale de déplacement". De plus, et dans certaines conditions géométriques, des structures distensives antérieures peuvent être remobilisées en cisaillement à proximité du secteur transformant. La comparaison des résultats expérimentaux et des données marines permet l'interprétation de ces dernières dans le cadre d'une reconstitution de la formation de la marge transformante de Côte d'Ivoire-Ghana: lors du rifting dans le bassin ivoirien profond, des décrochements courbes apparaissent successivement à l'avant de la zone transformante: ils forment à la limite du bassin en extension une ''terminaison en queue de cheval" qui construit la ride de Côte d'Ivoire-Ghana, ainsi que les rides mineures qui la prolongent à l'Ouest Certaines structures distensives antérieures sont également remobilisées en cisaillement à proximité de cette terminaison. Ultérieurement, le mouvement coulissant est entièrement accommodé par une "zone principale de déplacement" déformant le sommet de la pente continentale et de la ride marginale.

Une etude integree sur le transport, depot et stockage des sediments a ete menee sur la marge continentale du golfe du lion (mediterranee nw). Deux sites, au sw, ont ete selectionnes: le domaine epicontinental et la pente continentale (le canyon lacaze-duthiers). Des prelevements de sediment par carottier-boite ont ete realises et les taux de sedimentation mesures par methodes radiochimiques. Les processus actuels qui controlent l'apport en particules sont apprehendes par des lignes de mouillage comportant des pieges a particules sequentiels et des courantometres ainsi que par nephelometrie. Cette marge se caracterise par la grande variabilite des flux lithogenes et l'importance des flux advectifs. L'evolution temporelle des flux s'effectue suivant un systeme a double frequence: une evolution a base frequence, controlee par les variations saisonnieres du debit du courant liguro-provencal et l'augmentation hivernale des debits des rivieres; l'evolution a haute frequence, impulsionnelle, reliee en ete a l'influence des ondes internes en automne et aux evenements de tempete en hiver et aux blooms de printemps. La comparaison entre flux mesures dans les pieges et taux de sedimentation estimes sur les differents sites revele que l'aire prodeltaique est a la fois une zone de stockage de materiel silteux et une source de materiel fin erode en hiver. Le canyon se comporte en partie comme un site preferentiel de depot des particules qui franchissent la bordure de plateforme et comme un conduit pour l'alimentation du bassin

This PhD-Thesis presents a new chronostratigraphy of the Paleogene sedimentary record of the SE margin of the Eastern Ebro Basin. It is based on a number of magnetostratigraphic sections and its integration with marine and continental biochronological data. A robust correlation with the geomagnetic polarity time scale is obtained and provides the record with absolute ages, spanning from chrons C20n to C12r (Lutetian to Rupelian stages, ca. 43.0-31.0 Ma).
Main differences with respect to the current chronostratigraphic scheme of the Eastern Ebro Basin include the age of the uppermost marine units. While earlier schemes attributed a Bartonian age to these units regarding its biostratigraphical contents, new results supports a Lower Priabonian age, yielding an interpolated age of ca. 36.0 Ma (within chron C16n.2n) for the continentalization process. This age is in concordance with a reinterpretation of earlier magnetostratigraphic data from the Western South Pyrenean Foreland Basin, and indicates that continentalization of the basin occurred as a rapid and isochronous event. The analysis of the observed sedimentation trends are used to evaluate the character of this process. Thus, contrasting sedimentation trends between the Western and Eastern sectors of the South Pyrenean foreland are proposed to indicate that basin closing preferentially affected those areas subjected to sediment bypass towards the ocean domain.
Moreover, new results provide improved temporal constraints for the sediments of the Eocene Montserrat alluvial fan and fan-delta complex. Thus a Lutetian age is ascribed to the whole La Salut Formation and the age of the Montserrat Conglomerates spans from Upper Lutetian to Lower Priabonian. The new chronological framework is used to unravel the forcing controls on the sequential arrangement of the Montserrat area at different temporal scales, and also to revise the tectonosedimentary history. Obtained results show a correlation between (tectonic) subsidence and forelimb rotation measured on deformed strata of Montserrat. Furthermore, integration of subsidence curves from different sectors of the Eastern Ebro Basin allows estimating the variable contribution of tectonic loads from the two active basin margins: the Catalan Coastal Ranges and the Pyrenees. The results support the presence of a double flexure from Late Lutetian to Late Bartonian, associated to the two tectonically active margins. From Late Bartonian to Early Priabonian the homogenization of subsidence values is interpreted as the result of the coupling of the two sources of tectonic load.
Finally, the obtained chronology contributes to the calibration of several biostratigraphic zonations to the geomagnetic polarity time scale. In the marine realm, the base of calcareous nannofossil Zone NP19-20 is pinned down to an older age than its currently accepted attribution, whereas the time span assigned to Zone NP18 is significantly reduced. A revised calibration of larger foraminifers indicates that Zone SBZ18, formerly assigned exclusively to Late Bartonian, extends its range to the earlymost Priabonian, being the Bartonian stage almost entirely represented by Zone SBZ17. A division of Zone SBZ18 into two subzones is also proposed. In the continental realm, the magnetostratigraphic record of the Eastern Ebro Basin yields accurate ages for the immediately pre- and post-Grand Coupure mammal fossil assemblages found in this basin. Thus, the Grande Coupure, a major terrestrial faunal turnover recorded in Eurasia associated with the overall climate shift at the Eocene-Oligocene transition, is found to occur with a maximum allowable lag of 0.5 Myr with respect to this boundary. Furthermore, results from this PhD-Thesis allow revisiting correlations for the controversial Eocene-Oligocene record of the Hampshire Basin (UK), and their implications for the calibration of the Mammal Paleogene reference levels MP18 to MP21.<br>Aquesta Tesi Doctoral presenta una nova cronologia del registre sedimentari Paleogen del marge SE del sector oriental de la Conca de l’Ebre. La cronologia obtinguda es basa en la integració d’un conjunt de sèries magnetostratigràfiques amb totes les dades biostratigràfiques dels registres marí i continental disponibles en aquest sector de la conca. L’establiment d’una correlació robusta amb l’escala de temps de polaritat geomagnètica proveeix al registre sedimentari Paleogen d’un marc cronològic amb edats absolutes que van des del cron C20n fins al cron C12r (ca. 43.0-31.0 Ma), és a dir, del Lutecià al Rupelià. Aquest nou marc cronològic proporciona les eines necessàries per a la quantificació i posterior comprensió de l’evolució tectonosedimentària dels marges adjacents a la Conca de l’Ebre. Finalment, la cronologia resultant de la present Tesi Doctoral contribueix a la calibració amb l’escala de temps geològic de les biozonacions de nanofòssil calcari i macroforaminífers (Shallow Benthic Zones), així com dels nivells de referència de mamífers paleògens europeus (European vertebrate Mammal Paleogene –MP- reference levels).

The goal of a non-inferiority trial is to show that a new test therapy is either better or not too much worse than the active control rather than showing the test therapy is superior to a negative control (i.e. placebo). The appeal of a non-inferiority trial is that it is often unethical to give some patients a treatment with no therapeutic benefit. When designing a non-inferiority trial, the issues of assay sensitivity, sample size, constancy condition, and a suitable non-inferiority margin need to be considered. A poor choice of the non-inferiority margin is a major reason that many non-inferiority trials fail. A numerical example is presented to show how to estimate the non-inferiority margin without historical data.

Magíster en Ciencias de la Ingeniería, Mención Ingeniería Sísmica<br>Ingeniero Civil<br>La presente tesis de magister tuvo como objetivo analizar el comportamiento dinámico del puente Marga Marga, ubicado en Viña del Mar V región, durante el terremoto del Maule ocurrido el 27 de febrero de 2010 y sus principales réplicas. Con dicho fin, se analizan los registros de aceleraciones obtenidos por una red de 24 acelerómetros distribuidos en la estructura y valle del estero Marga Marga.
Durante el sismo del 27/02/2010, los periodos fundamentales del puente varían entre 2.38 a 2.50 s y 2.17 a 2.38 s, con un amortiguamiento de 10.7 y 13.4% del amortiguamiento crítico, en dirección longitudinal y transversal, respectivamente. Estas propiedades fueron determinadas usando los registros de los sensores ubicados en el tablero. Estos períodos son mayores que los determinados para sismos moderados y cercanos a los considerados en la fase de diseño. Los periodos fundamentales del suelo fueron 0.83 y 0.95 s en dirección perpendicular y longitudinal al valle. Los desplazamientos máximos relativos del sistema de aislación, medidos sobre la cepa central, fueron de 10.9 cm (54% de deformación angular) y 15.6 cm (76.5% de deformación angular) en dirección longitudinal y transversal, respectivamente; y 5.8 cm (29% de deformación angular) sobre los estribos en dirección longitudinal.
Posteriormente, se elaboraron dos modelos de elementos finitos del puente Marga Marga con el software OpenSees. Estos difieren en que en uno las cepas se representan con elementos lineales y elásticos, y en el otro con elementos de fibra no lineal que pueden presentar disipación por ciclos de histéresis. El análisis se realizó con input asincrónico. Los parámetros que se usaron para calibrar los modelos son: las propiedades al corte de los elementos elastoméricos bilineales ubicados en las cepas y la dimensión de la separación longitudinal entre los estribos y el tablero (que representa las juntas de dilatación). Variando estos parámetros se realizaron numerosos análisis y se eligieron los que mostraron menor error en los desplazamientos máximos absolutos respecto de lo registrado experimentalmente.
Con los registros del 17/04/2012 se obtienen periodos fundamentales del puente de 1.75 y 1.54 s en dirección longitudinal y transversal, respectivamente. Estos períodos son mayores que los obtenidos para sismos moderados similares ocurridos antes de 2010, indicando una flexibilización de la estructura post-terremoto. La deformación máxima del sistema de aislación, es de 8.3%. El modelo calibrado para el sismo principal no logra reproducir de buena forma los desplazamientos de este sismo, debido a que las incursiones de los aisladores en el rango no lineal son menores y por lo tanto la disipación de energía del modelo es insuficiente, por lo tanto debiera aumentarse el amortiguamiento modal considerado. No obstante, las frecuencias obtenidas son bastante similares a las de los registros.
Se concluye que el puente Marga Marga tiene un comportamiento muy dependiente del input aplicado que impide generar un modelo general que funcione para sismos de diferentes intensidades. Las acciones del terremoto del Maule se pueden considerar del orden del sismo de diseño.

Methane and the processes controlling its distribution along the western Mexican margin were investigated in November 2001. Water column and sediment core samples were collected from 14 stations along the margin, in and around the Gulf of California, for shore-based analysis of methane concentrations and methane stable carbon isotopic ratios. These stations occupied both basin and open margin sites in and below the oxygen minimum zone. Methane concentrations in the upper 200 m of the water column were supersaturated at all sites. The sea-air fluxes of methane that resulted from this supersaturation ranged between 0.85 and 5.0 umol m-2 d-1, indicating that methane fluxes from this area are not significantly larger than from other ocean areas. Local subsurface methane maxima had concentrations ranging from 4.6 to 10.1 nM, larger than those found at open ocean stations (2 - 4 nM). Below 200 m, the hydrocast stations fell into 3 groups: silled basins, open margin sites with sediments below the oxygen minimum zone, and open margin sites with sediments intersecting the oxygen minimum zone. Both silled basin sites had highly elevated methane concentrations (24.9 - 48 nM) in the bottom waters overlying the sediments. The S13C values of this methane ranged from -54 to -59 vs. PDB. The majority of the open margin sites had seafloor depths which were positioned below the oxygen minimum zone (> 1000 m) and contained relatively low methane concentrations below the subsurface maximum. Two open margin stations with water depths (590 and 450 m) that intersect the oxygen minimum zone had highly elevated methane concentrations throughout the water column. A maximum methane concentration of 78 nM, associated with the isotopically depleted S13C value of - 60 , was found overlying the sediments at the southernmost station. Sediment pore water methane concentrations were low but increased dramatically once sulfate concentrations decreased to < 3 mM. The depth of the sulfate reduction zone was shallow (80 - 100 cm) at the stations on the west side of Baja California but deeper (> 150 cm) and variable inside the Gulf of California. Methane fluxes from the sediments ranged from 0.24 to 5.5 umol m-2 d-1, with the highest fluxes observed on the west side of Baja California. Stations with seafloors in the oxygen minimum zone had much higher methane concentrations throughout the water column than stations with seafloors below the oxygen minimum zone. The sediments along the western Mexican margin could be a source of methane to the eastern tropical North Pacific at locations where the margin and oxygen minimum zone intersect.<br>viii, 66 leaves

A key question in developmental biology is how form is generated. The model species Arabidopsis thaliana produces simple leaves with marginal outgrowths termed serrations. Serration development in A. thaliana requires both the transcription factor CUP-SHAPED COTYLEDON2 (CUC2) and the auxin efflux facilitator PIN-FORMED1 (PIN1), which regulates polar auxin transport by forming convergence points (Hay et al., 2006; Nikovics et al., 2006; Scarpella et al., 2006). In Chapter 3, I investigate how CUC2, PIN1 and auxin interact to control serration development. I demonstrate that CUC2 promotes PIN1 convergence point and auxin activity foci formation along the margin of the leaf, whilst high auxin activity represses CUC2 expression. Furthermore, interspersed peaks of CUC2 and auxin activity pattern serration development along the proximo-distal axis of the leaf. Thus, auxin, PIN1 and CUC2 form a negative feedback loop that patterns serration development. CUC genes and PIN1 are required for leaflet development in Cardamine hirsuta (Barkoulas et al., 2008; Blein et al., 2008), a close relative of A. thaliana that produces compound leaves subdivided into units termed leaflets. However, it is unclear how CUC and PIN1 interact to control leaflet development. In Chapter 4, I demonstrate that similar to A. thaliana, CUC genes promote PIN1 convergence point and auxin activity foci formation at the C. hirsuta leaf margin, whilst high auxin activity represses CUC2 expression. These genetic interactions likely create interspersed peaks of CUC2 and auxin activity that pattern leaflet development. Thus, the same negative feedback loop between CUC, PIN1 and auxin patterns both leaflet development in C. hirsuta and serration development in A. thaliana. KNOTTED1-LIKE HOMEOBOX (KNOX) genes are expressed in C. hirsuta leaves, and interact with ChCUC and PIN1 in positive and negative feedback loops, respectively, to control leaflet development (Barkoulas et al., 2008; Blein et al., 2008). KNOX genes are not expressed in A. thaliana leaves, but deeply lobed margins reminiscent of leaflets develop in association with ectopic KNOX expression in leaves (Chuck et al., 1996; Hay et al., 2006). However, it is unclear whether regulatory interactions of PIN1, CUC and KNOX which occur in C. hirsuta leaflets are employed during KNOX-induced lobe development in A. thaliana. In Chapter 5, I demonstrate that CUC2 and polar auxin transport are required for ectopic KNOX expression. Conversely, I show that KNOX misexpression up-regulates CUC2 expression in A. thaliana leaves. Thus, interactions between KNOX, CUC and PIN1 that occur in leaflet development in C. hirsuta also occur in association with KNOX-induced lobe development in A. thaliana. In addition to investigating the regulatory interactions between known components of leaf development pathways, I sought to identify novel genes that mediate CUC2-dependent serration development in A. thaliana. In Chapter 6, I identify a suppressor of the smooth margin phenotype of cuc2 leaves that partially restores PIN1 localisation in the absence of functional CUC2. Finally, in the General Discussion I evaluate how interlinking feedback loops between CUC, KNOX and auxin pattern serration and leaflet development. I then discuss why interlinking feedback loops may have been deployed to control outgrowths in both plant and animal systems.

With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the 9/11 attacks, the landscape of the freedom of religion has changed. The issues now facing freedom of religion varies greatly from the issues that the drafters of the universal declaration of human rights faced after World War II. In the light of the new issues that States face in the intersection of religion and societal interest, scholars have criticized the European Court of Human Rights to give too much leeway to the States in determining how the human rights should be implemented, by using the doctrine of margin of appreciation. Critics of the margin of appreciation claim that it is based on culture relativism and that the doctrine undermines the universality of the human rights. In order to decide if the margin of appreciation has indeed led to a relativization of the human rights I compared it to the jurisprudence of the UN Human Rights Committee and its use of the Syracusa principles. My conclusion is that the jurisprudence of the European Court of Human Rights cannot be considered to be based on culture relativism. The jurisprudence of the UN Human Rights Committee is not entirely universal given that the contracting states can make reservation to articles in the ICCPR, which excludes the UN Committee’s jurisdiction of that specific provision in the treaty. Both the European Court and the UN Comittee has to balance their jurisdiction with sovereignty of the its member states and therefore it is inevitable that some leeway must be given to the member states, First of all, to decide whether the margin of appreciation is a sympton of culture relativity in a specific case, the Europan Court has to improve their way of describing and justifying how the margin of appreciation is used. Secondly, I will discuss the necessity to review the relationship between universalism and culture relativism in order to better understand international human rights law.

Modern ergs are characterized by bedform types and distributions that reflect the directional variability and result and drift potential of the wind regime. Sand accumulates in the erg-centre, an area of low resultant drift potential where large, slow-moving linear and star draas act as sediment sinks. The thickest ancient aeolian sequences contain stacked transverse and oblique draa and dry interdune deposits. Only these forms are able to transport sand rapidly enough to aggrade by autocyclic bedform climb. Subsidence probably played a crucial role in their accumulation. Todays ergs are poor analogues for ancient erg sequences due to the rapidity of recent climatic change and because they do not appear to be aggrading by bedform climb. The sand saturation concept introduced by Wilson (1971) provides a valuable tool for understanding the nature of ancient ergs and regional bounding surfaces. Undersaturated conditions cannot form dunes, but under metasaturated conditions, dunes with deflationary interdunes may be sustained, but these are incapable of preservation by bedform climb. Only under fully sand-saturated conditions can ergs aggrade by bedform climb. The presence of deflationary interdunes in ancient erg-margin sequences indicates metasaturated conditions and implies that preservation only follows subsidence or water-table rise. Two extremes or erg-margin interaction are identified here. One, the Kayenta-Navajo transition, occurred at the margin of an established erg. Fluvial-aeolian interactions form small-scale cycles that reflect the continual interplay between the active erg and adjacent fluvial system. Large-scale cycles appear to represent a climatically-controlled alternation between active and denudated erg phases, the latter allowing advance of fluvial systems over the former erg during wetter phases. The opposite extreme occurred during deposition of the Ormskirk sandstone in the Irish Sea. Here, conditions were predominantly unsaturated because, though aqueous and aeolian processes provided an abundant supply of sand, this was almost immediately removed from the aeolian system by the continually rising water-table, thus restricting erg and dunefield development to elevated areas.
