e features of the modern situation in Ukraine demonstrate a growth of the interest in the phenomenon of the linguistic programming of personality, which is correlated to the media, political and religious influences simultaneously. The article is devoted to the categories of communicative ethics and responsibility in the religious discourse. The main directions of renovation of religious communication in Ukraine have been stated. The effects of communicative dynamism are corresponded to the political, marketing, social functions and are represented by the religious advertisement, religious branding, religious tourism, religious naming, media activity of the Orthodox and proselyte religious groups, the different types of convergence with political values. The objects of the research are the hidden aspects of verbal religious communication. The subject of the article is renovating communicative status of religious texts. The tasks are the following: to analyze the innovative forms of communicative interactions in the modern Ukrainian religious discourse. The methodology of the research is based on the current approaches to scientific studying of linguistic suggestion. I use discourse analysis (critical) for the science qualification of interactional aspects, sociopsychological and sociocognitive characteristics, frameworks and contexts.In religious discourse, text representation has some characteristics of the independent semantic field, but in a communicative process a religious text can acquire the forms of power and control, which are used by the religious leaders and institutions. Therefore, the use of mass media channels for retranslation of religious ideas, in which the media literacy is ignored, promotes the growth of all types of verbal manipulation. In Ukraine the present-day informational situation is determined by the needs of popularisation of knowledge about existing manipulative technologies and linguistic manipulative techniques, in particular.

Television has the advantage that it is audio-visual (seen and heard), it can depict reality and also present events that are happening. TV9 Nahdlatul Ulama is a television station based on religious values. This TV was founded by the largest religious organization in Indonesia. As an economic institution, television is not only used as a means to spread organizational ideologies, but also takes into account business aspects to do well. This study aims to examine the performance of a religious television station amidst the intense competition in the television industry in Indonesia, and how media performance is affected by financial sources. By conducting in-depth interviews with key informants and direct observation, this research found that TV9 practices management principles in media management, even though there are several considerations for Nahdlatul Ulama management, TV9 involves personnel from Nahdlatul Ulama members in aspects of its management so that ideological transformation can run well. From the aspect of broadcast media performance, TV9 benefits from the very large mass base of Nahdlatul Ulama members in Indonesia. TV9 focuses on including Kiayi and Bunyai as inspiration for television program design and also includes Islamic boarding schools. In the culture of NU, Kiayi and Bunyai have a strategic position in the religious tradition of Nahdlatul Ulama.

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact on the soap opera Aisyah Putri that aired on the private television station RCTI. This study uses a qualitative approach by relying on George Gebner's theory of states that television shows affect the audience. Data collection techniques through observation and interviews are three main aspects, namely cognitive, affective and conative, related to the effects of exposure to mass media messages. Female students of Al-Biruni High School in Bandung consisting of classes X, XI, and XII. The results of the study showed that the process of perception of teenagers on Aisyah Putri soap opera shows the stages of sensation, perception, and confirmation (memory and thinking). The motive for the use of headscarves for teenagers. The headscarf perception among adolescents, especially for students at Albiruni Cerdas Mulia Bandung High School has a strong influence on exposure to "Aisyah Putri" religious soap operas in terms of cognitive, affective and conative.

Abstract (sommario):
This research identified the construction of Sundanese culture in the local mass media of West Java. Based on the phenomenon occurred, the culture could be interpreted in an accordance with the spirit of time and society. Within the national framework, this issue was not simple because the nationalism that was built on the plots of localism was not impossible to be changed. The research method employed the qualitative method. The data were the form of discourses contained in the local mass media. The results show that the language that is being used by the local media that describes the meaning of low bargaining of political position and national leadership. The construction of the local media in depicting the Sundanese culture is classified as the national, cultural, Islamic, and other aspects of culture. In the context of national leadership, the construction strengthens and affirms the faced condition and the reality. In terms of cultural relations with Islam, the local media shows the positive aspects of the condition and the history of the Sundanese people that has been known as a religious, ethnic group. In terms of the cultural relations with other aspects, the people of West Java are advised to make an inward reflection in viewing the existence of Sundanese culture within the national context. The ideologies that established by the local media towards the Sundanese culture are idealism, primordial, and pragmatism-realistic.

This thesis is a research on Instagram @motivasii_hijrahh_ as a Da'wah Media in Improving the Religious Experience of Youth at Kampung Rawa Sugi Mosque. The type of research used is qualitative research with a mass communication approach and a da'wah approach. There are two sources of data in this study, namely primary data sources and secondary data sources. The results of this study can be concluded that the effectiveness of Instagram as a social media in preaching is considered capable of touching various groups, including teenagers, to adults. Through social media, da'wah can be conveyed better than da'wah through Islamic events. Because the da'wah delivered can be directly read or known by millions of people at the same time. Through social media, da'wah activities become easier. The Instagram account @motivasii_hijrahh_ preaches through Instagram by using features on Instagram such as photos/quotes, videos and instastories. The Instagram account @motivasii_hijrahh_ has a positive impact on mosque youth in Rawa Sugi village who are followers of the @motivasii_hijrahh_ account. And of course it can add to the religious experience for mosque youth in Rawa Sugih village. Da'wah in the mass media is said to be effective because it is able to have a positive impact. The impact of mass communication in three aspects namely cognitive effects, affective effects and conative/behavioral effects. The motivational_hijrahh_ Instagram account has a positive impact and has cognitive, affective and behavioral effects on increasing the religious experience of adolescents at the Rawa Sugi village mosque.

Da'wah of Islam using the media is a form of strategic application for Muslims regarding the need to spread Islamic teachings with a wider reach, so that it is hoped that it will be able to attract the interest of the general public to listen to the calls of Islamic teachings. Using media in da’wah is an innovative process in carrying out da'wah so that the "message of wisdom" conveyed can be conveyed well and optimally. Along with the development of information technology and globalization, the mass media industry is also experiencing significant changes. These changes are clearly visible in aspects of structure, work and operational mechanisms, and mass media content. This ultimately urges various media institutions to follow the business competition patterns of the media industry in order to survive. The tight competitive climate in the mass media industry ultimately has an effect on the increasingly strong values ??of economic interests (profit) over the idealistic values ??of the media. This research method is qualitative with a descriptive approach. The media management applied to TV9 is the same as other media companies, what makes TV9 different is that there is still an inherent Islamic boarding school culture, because it is a religious TV whose spirit was born from the Islamic boarding school students. Regarding media management activities related to market push issues and issues of public interest, among business interests and da'wah, it tends to be more towards a da'wah orientation because da'wah is the vision and mission of TV9 and most of its programs are da'wah programs

The development of the convergent communication technology is not only limited to technology, but has penetrated and changed the basic patterns of human life. As a process structure and artifact, technology is an imperactive feature of future community development. Mass media is an effective means that can reach the masses in a large and widespread universality of reach. Mass media has an important role in society and is considered to have excess that can influence human mind in order to change their lifestyle. This paper tries to explain the phenomenon of convergence media that forces conventional media to enter the internet network (online). The research methods are qualitative and descriptive by applying library study and emperical data. This study discussed the digitalization of freedom in democracy in the mass media. There are 4 (four) aspects that influence the shifting of religious behavior community as a result of mass media freedom, in economic, social, cultural, and political life. The results of the study reveal conventional media shifting to online media give positive and negative impacts to its users. Moral decline in community, the economic life that puts too much emphasis on material fulfillment efforts, has caused people to become consumptive. Culture has caused the changes in the way of nation's life and losing of political values that based on family spirit, consensus, and mutual cooperation. In the view of Islam, mass media is a mass communication media that functions in creating a public opinion. The forming of public opinion is something that cannot be underestimated in the Islamic system. Mass media has a function to build a solid religious community and strengthen the values of nation and state life. Perkembangan teknologi komunikasi yang berkonvergensi ini tidak hanya sebatas dalam ranah teknologi semata, melainkan telah merambah dan mengubah pola-pola dasar kehidupan manusia.Teknologi sebagai struktur proses dan artefak, merupakan ciri imperactive perkembangan masyarakat masa depan. Media massa merupakan sarana efektif yang mampu menjangkau massa dalam jumlah besar dan luas (universality of reach). Media massa memiliki peranan penting dalam kehidupan masyarakat dan dianggap mempunyai keunggulan yang dapat mempengaruhi pikiran manusia sehingga gaya hidup dapat berubah. Makalah ini mencoba memaparkan munculnya fenomena konvergensi media yang memaksa media konvensional melebarkan sayap dan masuk ke dalam jaringan internet (daring). Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitiatif dengan menggunakan studi literatur dan data empiris. Dalam penelitian ini dibahas digitalisasi kebebasan berdemokrasi dalam media massa. Ada 4 (empat) aspek yang mempengaruhi pergeseran perilaku religiuitas masyarakat sebagai akibat kebebasan media massa, mulai dari aspek kehidupan ekonomi, sosial, budaya dan politik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa, pergeseran media konvensional ke media daring memiliki dampak positif bagi yang memanfaatkan dengan baik, sebaliknya berdampak negatif jika memanfaatkannya secara sia-sia. Kemerosotan moral di kalangan masyarakat, kemajuan kehidupan ekonomi yang terlalu menekankan pada upaya pemenuhan material, telah menyebabkan sebagian masyarakat menjadi konsumtif. Sisi budaya mempercepat perubahan pola kehidupan bangsa dan lunturnya nilai-nilai politik yang berdasarkan semangat kekeluargaan, musyawarah mufakat, dan gotong royong. Dalam pandangan Islam, media massa merupakan media komunikasi massal yang berfungsi dalam menciptakan sebuah opini publik yang akan menjadi opini umum.Pembentukan opini umum adalah hal yang tidak bisa disepelekan dalam sistem Islam. Media massa berfungsi untuk membangun masyarakat religiuitas yang kokoh dan untuk memperkuat nilai-nilai kehidupan berbangsa dan bernegara.

This study aims to examine the methods, processes of interpretation (tafsir), and religious discourses that develop on social media, as well as the implications and effectiveness of its interpretation for the readers. It is a case study of the Instagram account @qur'anreview. Amid the trend of Qur’an interpretation on social media, this @qur'anreview account has attracted the attention of netizens through its religious content presentation in the form of interpretation as its language style, diction, and nuances meet the millennial generation. Based on the hermeneutic, critical discourse analysis, and mass communication effect theoretical approach, the results of the study show that the religious content presented by the @quranreview account focuses on the language approach presented in the form of thematic interpretation. The interpretation follows the opportunistic and omnivorous characteristics of the digital native. The interpretation model is quite effective and has implications for the cognitive, affective, and behavioral aspects of the readers. While the social space of its interpretation is based on the culture of social media and digital native, which leads to popular Islamic discourse.

The journey of the national film industry has a long history. Gradually, the film industry has become a mere commercial industry dominated by horror and comedy films. This has resulted in the formation of stereotypes that all national films have the same content and do not vary. The films "cin(T)a" and "3 Hati 2 Dunia 1 Cinta" present as new variations in national cinema, which carry the unusual theme of religious pluralism. Gamson and Modigliani's framing analysis sees mass media discourse as consisting of a number of packages to form the construction of an event. There are two aspects to framing. First, choose reality. Second, how the media presents that reality. Gamson and Modigliani's framing analysis consists of two elements: framing devices and reasoning devices. The research method used in this study is descriptive qualitative method. Descriptive qualitative methods produce up-to-date data that can be used in the development of science. The results of this study found that the films "cin(T)a" and "3 Hati 2 Dunia 1 Cinta" portray religious pluralism as a beautiful thing, and people should be able to live in harmony and comfort despite differences in society, but it does not deny that although the two films try to show the relationship between religions from a positive side, the relationship between religions is still something that cannot be accepted by some people. Based on the results of the study, the author concludes that religious pluralism is a beautiful thing in the lives of Indonesian people. However, many things must be considered if religious pluralism is associated in the context of romance, especially to the marriage ladder.

A proposta deste estudo é historiar e analisar as possibilidades de criação da primeira emissora de televisão de inspiração católica no Brasil, a Rede Vida de Televisão. Assim foram identificadas e analisadas as diretrizes comunicacionais católicas e o debate em torno da questão a partir de documentos oficiais da Igreja, de pensadores, leigos e eclesiásticos ligados a ela, entre 1989 a 1995. Procurou-se posicionar o debate católico ante os meios de comunicação social e, sobretudo, focar os olhares para o meio televisivo, identificando de que forma os pensadores e intelectuais católicos expressavam-se e debatiam sobre o tema Igreja e Mídia. A pesquisa mostra que, ao contrário do que é divulgado pela literatura especializada, a Rede Vida só foi possível ser formada pela ação de alguns poucos agentes que atuavam na interseção de dinâmicas próprias do âmbito político, do religioso e comunicacional, compreendidas durante o período de transição democrática brasileira. Buscou-se identificar os debates oriundos dos círculos católicos acerca da comunicação social, da ação política nacional e regional da chamada Nova República e da interface destas no universo de empresários da mídia regional e nacional. Por fim, remonta-se historicamente a programação inicial exibida pela Rede Vida, analisando-a em uma dupla chave: a programação religiosa e a generalista.
The purpose of this study is to chronicle and analyze the possibilities of creating the first television station in Brazil Catholic inspiration, “Rede Vida de Televisão”. So were identified and analyzed the guidelines and communication Catholic debate on the issue from official Church documents, thinkers, lay and clergy attached to it, from 1989 to 1995. It was tried to position the Catholic debate before the media and, above all, focus their eyes to the television medium, identifying how the Catholic thinkers and intellectuals expressed themselves and debating on the subject Church and Media. Research shows that, contrary to what is disclosed in the literature, “Rede Vida de Televisão” was only possible to be formed by the action of a few agents who worked at the intersection of their own dynamics of the political, religious and communication, understood during the Brazilian democratic transition. It was sought to identify the debates coming from Catholic circles about the media, the action of national and regional policy called the New Republic and the interface of these entrepreneurs in the population of the regional and national media. Finally, historically goes back to the original programming aired by Rede Vida, analyzing it in a double switch: the general and religious programming.

Resumo: A tese propõe uma história cultural da mídia evangélica infantil produzida no Brasil entre os anos 1950 e 2000. Defendemos a idéia de que o uso da mídia foi um fator importante para a constituição de uma cultura evangélica pós-moderna brasileira, voltada para o consumo individual e para questões práticas cotidianas. O tema da família e da infância tem fomentado uma intensa circulação de bens culturais evangélicos por meio da mídia, que permite a construção de uma religiosidade transdenominacional. Consolida-se uma cultura evangélica midiática que mescla mensagens tradicionais cristãs a formatos contemporâneos disponíveis em um supermercado cultural evangélico. Focalizamos os discursos e as estratégias de produtores de mídia evangélica, a fim de analisar as representações sobre a infância cristã. Além disso, analisamos a recepção desses produtos para identificar os seus usos e sentidos no cotidiano
Abstract: The thesis proposes a cultural history of the children's evangelical media produced in Brazil between the 1950s and 2000s. We defend the idea that the use of media was an important factor for the constitution of a post-modern Brazilian evangelical culture, directed towards the individual consumption and daily issues. The theme of the family and the infancy has fomented an intense circulation of evangelical cultural goods through the media, which allows the construction of a transdenominational religiosity. One consolidates a mediatic evangelical culture that mingles traditional Christian messages with contemporary formats available in an evangelical cultural supermarket. We focus on the discourses and the strategies of evangelical media producers in order to analyse the representations on Christian childhood. Besides, we analyse the reception of these products to identify their uses and meanings in the daily life

Buscou-se identificar os debates oriundos dos círculos católicos acerca da comunicação social, da ação política nacional e regional da chamada Nova República e da interface destas no universo de empresários da mídia regional e nacional. Por fim, remonta-se historicamente a programação inicial exibida pela Rede Vida, analisando-a em uma dupla chave: a programação religiosa e a generalista.
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to chronicle and analyze the possibilities of creating the first television station in Brazil Catholic inspiration, "Rede Vida de Televisão". So were identified and analyzed the guidelines and communication Catholic debate on the issue from official Church documents, thinkers, lay and clergy attached to it, from 1989 to 1995. It was tried to position the Catholic debate before the media and, above all, focus their eyes to the television medium, identifying how the Catholic thinkers and intellectuals expressed themselves and debating on the subject Church and Media. Research shows that, contrary to what is disclosed in the literature, "Rede Vida de Televisão" was only possible to be formed by the action of a few agents who worked at the intersection of their own dynamics of the political, religious and communication, understood during the Brazilian democratic transition. It was sought to identify the debates coming from Catholic circles about the media, the action of national and regional policy called the New Republic and the interface of these entrepreneurs in the population of the regional and national media. Finally, historically goes back to the original programming aired by Rede Vida, analyzing it in a double switch: the general and religious programming.

The intention of this paper was to analyze how the ethos, pathos and logos were used in the religious discourse of Minister Sarah Sheeva, whose intention was to seek new members to her community and to keep those who are already part of it. With this objective in mind, our corpus is composed by 6 Sentimental Counseling published by the Minister on Youtube. After the corpus transcription this paper describes the discursive organization and interprets the data based on the theoretical framework related to the study of argumentation based on the tripod logos, ethos and pathos, and in studies of genres. In this analysis, Amossy (2011), Charaudeau (2007, 2010, 2011), Perelman (1996), Maingueneau (2011) were used, among other authors. Through logos analysis we noticed that Sarah Sheeva uses many logical arguments in her discourse construction. Regarding the dimension of ethos in Counseling, it was found that the main ethos related to the image of Sarah Sheeva were of virtue, solidarity and credibility and that ethos related to the image of the Minister are built not only on her speech , but also on her way of dressing and behaving. Concerning the analysis of pathos, Sarah Sheeva‟s argumentation is built not only from logic, but also on the emotional, as she tries to articulate emotion and reason with the primary purpose of counseling, which would be maintaining people that already follow her and capture the faithful ones who have not yet shared her precepts. Finally, by analyzing the imaginary socio-discursive on women, we find that in Sarah Sheeva‟s speech there is a traditional point of view that condemns female liberty, which women have conquered over the years.
Pretendeu-se, através deste trabalho, analisar como o ethos, o pathos e o logos foram utilizados no discurso religioso da pastora Sarah Sheeva, tendo em vista sua intenção de buscar a adesão de novos fiéis e de manter os que já fazem parte da comunidade religiosa. Com esse objetivo, nosso corpus se constitui de 6 Aconselhamentos Sentimentais publicados pela pastora no Youtube. Na sequência, optamos por, após a transcrição, descrever a organização discursiva e interpretar os dados com base no arcabouço teórico referente aos estudos da argumentação, baseados no tripé logos, ethos e pathos; e também nos estudos sobre gêneros. Utilizamos, na análise, Amossy (2011), Charaudeau (2007, 2010, 2011), Perelman (1996), Maingueneau (2011), entre outros autores. Através da análise do logos, percebemos que Sarah Sheeva utiliza diversos argumentos lógicos na construção do seu discurso. No que se refere à dimensão do ethos nos Aconselhamentos, constatamos que os principais ethos relacionados à imagem de Sarah Sheeva foram o de virtude, solidariedade e credibilidade e que os ethos relacionados à imagem da pastora são construídos não só pelo seu discurso, mas também pela sua forma de se vestir e de se comportar. Concernente à análise do pathos, temos que a argumentação de Sarah Sheeva é construída não só a partir de uma lógica, mas também pautada no emocional, e que ela intenta articular a razão e a emoção com a principal finalidade dos aconselhamentos, que seria manter os sujeitos que já a seguem e captar os fiéis que ainda não compartilham dos seus preceitos. Por fim, através da análise dos imaginários sociodiscursivos sobre a mulher, constatamos que há no discurso de Sarah Sheeva a reprodução de um ponto de vista tradicional que condena a liberdade feminina, duramente conquistada ao longo dos anos.

Nos últimos tempos, o movimento neopentecostal vem ganhando terreno no campo religioso brasileiro. O seu avanço se deve, entre outros motivos, pelo afrouxamento de condutas ascetas e o rigor sectário que, até então, estiveram presentes nas comunidades que seguem o cristianismo no país. A Igreja Mundial do Poder de Deus surgiu no final do século passado e vem abarcando para suas hostes um número crescente de fiéis. O uso sistemático da televisão na propagação da sua mensagem, ancorada na cura e resolução dos problemas deste mundo, responde, em parte, pelo sucesso dessa agremiação. O que o seu aparecimento acrescenta ao neopentecostalismo nacional, a influência da persuasão e a eficácia da mídia eletrônica na adesão dos fiéis são reflexões norteantes desta dissertação.
In the past few years, the neopentecostal movement has gain space on the brasilian religious field. The progress is based, among any others reasons, in the soft way to accept certain conducts and the sectary strictness that prevail in the others religious communities that follows the christianism in the country. The Igreja Mundial do Poder de Deus was created in the end of the last century and since then has been embracing in its temples a crescent number of followers. The systemic use of television in the propagation of its creed encored in the cure and solving problems of the world, responds, in part, for the success of this agremiation. What its appearance adds to the national neopentecostalismo,the influence of persuasion and efficiency of electronic media in the adhesion of followers are the reflexes that guided this dissertation.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study is an endeavour on the cutting edge of the field of practical theology. It engages in a pastoral assessment of contemporary men and masculinities in their manifold representations and embodiments. An in-depth assessment of current schemata of interpretation (on the issue of masculinity), is done within different cultural contexts, aiming to hermeneutically put this into dialogue with a pastoral-anthropological view on masculinity. This dialogue is initiated in order to gain deeper insight into diverse masculinities and the challenges they face in their search for meaning, intimacy and vitality. The point of the dialogue here is rather to describe than to prescribe. The dissertation analyses ‘masculinities as experienced and enacted’ in life and ‘masculinities as represented’ in the mass media as well as in other forms of pop culture, through a multidisciplinary perspective. It is further aimed at the contextual, theological deconstruction of these cultural representations and the establishment and furthering of meaningful connections between male identity, human dignity and Christian spirituality. The focus in contemporary (sociological and psychological) research on masculinity is on enactment of masculinities or ‘doing’ masculinities rather than ‘being’ masculine. The dominant cultural images of masculinity within a globalising life-order suggest and promote materialistic values such as efficiency, performance, mechanisation and functionality. These images are assessed and the interplay between it (the cultural images) and conceptualisations of God (God-images) are explored. This study asserts that men’s identity, self-understanding and spirituality is shaped in many ways by these images, but that the image of the crucified and risen Christ can indeed serve as a meaningful and normative-critical counter-image to the macho-images portrayed by most postmodern masculinities (which many men presently experience as confusing). This counter-image of Christ can transcend the abuse of power, the focus on performance and the commodification of male embodiment, in men’s lives, as they engage in a spirituality of vulnerable courage. A pastoral-anthropological perspective is employed in order to shift the emphasis on male identity in terms of gender and sexuality, towards a spiritual understanding of male identity in terms of human dignity and human destiny (i.e. the quest for meaning). The important question of the relationship between power, masculinity and male embodiment is addressed. Essentialist ideas about masculinity are deconstructed, and a re-interpretation thereof is introduced within a view of reality that affirms and embraces an earth-centred and embodied spirituality. Masculinity and male identity is in that sense “saved” from a commercial reduction by means of an eschatological and pneumatological perspective. This theological re-interpretation of masculinity presents a critical factor on the cultural notion that manhood is something that must be validated by means of performance (especially on the terrain of sexuality). Masculinity, viewed from an eschatological perspective, is thus more than virility that has to be manifested by doing functions. The culturally-determined understanding of masculinity - in terms of brutal power and control – is in this sense ‘emasculated’ in this study. In the light of Christ’s resurrection, there is new hope for the re-interpretation of masculinity. The postmodern man’s resurrection is therefore not guaranteed by the “Viagra-magic blue pill”, but in actual fact by the resurrection of Christ who daily unleashes and affirms new meaningful dimensions of hope in the globalised life-matrix. The power of masculinity thus lies in embodying vulnerability and mutual relationality, contesting unilateral and hierarchical relations. Within this context manhood is not equal to the size of achievement or success, nor performances or powerful penetration, but it rather denotes the capacity for lovingly hospitable relationships and the measure of the soul’s depth of character, i.e. its capacity to embody and affirm the courage to be.
AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie studie is ‘n navorsingsreis op die snykant van die veld van praktiese teologie. Dit neem deel aan ’n pastorale ondersoek van hedendaagse mans en manlikhede in die verskeie opsigte waarop hul verteenwoordig en beliggaam word. ’n In-diepte assessering van huidige interpretasie-skemas - oor die onderwerp van manlikheid - word gedoen binne verskillende kulturele kontekste, met die doel om dit hermeneuties in dialoog te bring met ’n pastoraal-antropologiese perspektief op manlikheid. Hierdie dialoog word geïnisieër ten einde dieper insig te verkry in diverse manlikhede en die uitdagings wat hulle die hoof moet bied in hul soeke na sin, intimiteit en vitaliteit. Die punt van hierdie dialoog is eerder om te beskryf as om voor te skryf. Die dissertasie analiseer – deur ’n multi-dissiplinêre invalshoek - ‘manlikhede soos dit ervaar en uitgeleef word’ in die lewe asook ‘manlikhede soos dit verteenwoordig word’ in die massa media sowel as in ander vorme van populêre kultuur. Dit is verder gemik op die kontekstuele, teologiese dekonstruksie van hierdie kulturele verteenwoordigings, asook die tot stand bring en bevordering van betekenisvolle verbande tussen manlike identiteit, menswaardigheid en Christelike spiritualiteit. Die fokus in hedendaagse (sosiologiese en sielkundige) navorsing oor manlikheid val op die uitleef van manlikhede oftewel die ‘doen’ van manlikhede, eerder as om manlik te ‘wees’. Die dominante kulturele beelde van manlikheid binne ’n geglobaliseerde lewensbestel suggereer en bevorder materialistiese waardes soos effektiwiteit, prestasie, meganisasie en funksionaliteit. Hierdie beelde word ge-evalueer en die interaksie tussen dit (die kulturele beelde) en moontlike konseptualiserings van God (Godsbeelde) word verken. Hierdie studie voer aan dat mans se identiteit, selfverstaan en spiritualiteit op velerlei maniere gevorm word deur hierdie beelde, maar dat die beeld van die gekruisigde en opgestane Christus inderdaad kan dien as ’n betekenisvolle en normatief-kritiese kontra-beeld tot die “macho”-beelde wat deur meeste postmoderne manlikhede versinnebeeld word (maar wat baie mans huidiglik as verwarrend ervaar). Hierdie kontra-beeld van Christus kan die misbruik van mag, asook die fokus op prestasie en die kommodifisering van manlike beliggaming oorstyg in mans se lewens – deurdat hulle deelneem aan ’n spiritualiteit van weerlose moed. ‘n Pastoraal-antropologiese perspektief word dus hier benut ten einde die klem op manlike identiteit in terme van gender en seksualiteit te verskuif, in die rigting van ‘n spirituele verstaan van manlike identiteit in terme van menswaardigheid en menslike bestemming (d.i. die soeke na sin). Die belangrike vraagstuk van die verhouding tussen mag, manlikheid en manlike beliggaming word aangeraak. Essentialistiese idees oor manlikheid word gedekonstrueer, en ’n herinterpretasie daarvan word voorgestel binne ’n werklikheidsverstaan wat ’n aards-gesentreerde en beliggaamde spiritualiteit bevestig en waardeer. Manlikheid en manlike identiteit word in hierdie opsig “gered” van ’n kommersiële verskraling deur middel van ’n eskatologiese en pneumatologiese perspektief. Hierdie teologiese herinterpretasie van manlikheid bied ’n kritiese faktor op die kulturele opvatting dat manwees iets is wat gevalideer moet word deur middel van prestasie (veral op die gebied van seksualiteit). Manwees, gesien vanuit ‘n eskatologiese perspektief, is dus meer as viriliteit wat gemanifesteer moet word deur doen-funksies. Die kultureel-bepaalde verstaan van manlikheid – in terme van brutale mag en beheer - word in hierdie opsig ‘ontman’ binne hierdie navorsingstuk. In die lig van Christus se opstanding is daar nuwe hoop vir die herinterpretasie van manlikheid. Die postmoderne man se opstanding word daarom nie gewaarborg deur die “Viagra tower blou pil” nie, maar eintlik deur die opstanding van Christus, wat daagliks nuwe sinvolle dimensies van hoop in die geglobaliseerde lewensmatriks vrystel en bevestig. Die krag van manlikheid lê dus in die beliggaming van weerloosheid en wederkerige relasionaliteit, tesame met die weerstand bied teen unilaterale en hiërargiese verhoudings. Binne hierdie konteks is manwees nie gelyk aan die grootte van doelwitte wat bereik is of sukses, prestasie of kragtige penetrasie nie. Nee, manwees omvat eerder die kapasiteit vir liefdevolle, gasvrye verhoudings asook die afmeting van die siel se diepte van karakter, d.i. die kapasiteit daarvan om die ‘moed om te wees’ te beliggaam.

The purpose of this dissertation is to further clarify the role of mass media for evangelicals in negotiating religious identity. This project uses lived religion, cultural studies, and narrative identity as a framework. Over the course of seven months, I conducted participant observation in an American Baptist congregation, where I observed both their religious and media practices. Additionally, I conducted qualitative interviews with selected key congregants to get a fuller picture of both their media use and their narrative religious identity. I found that narratives about media and media use led participants to certain strategies of distancing and/or integrating media with their religious identity. Various narrative tools, such as maps, symbolic inventories, tropes, and spiritual anchors, were used by participants to juxtapose media with their religious practice. By using these tools, participants sought to gain more moral and religious certainty by using media as both a proxy for self and as a proxy for Others. As moral and religious uncertainty is a characteristic of modernity, I conclude that there may be ramifications for larger media use and moral thought.

In the area of mass communications and media sociology, connections between theoretical claims and empirical evidence have often been tenuous. Using American national Election Study data gathered by the Center for Political Studies, this dissertation tests a series of hypotheses about the political impact of the mass media. The work profiles the news audience, and examines the public's reliance upon television and newspapers as sources of political information. Next, evidence is brought to bear upon the set of pessimistic assumptions that television news personnel hold about the tastes and capacities of the news audience. Finally, a crucial test is developed in order to evaluate five competing and contradictory hypotheses, all attempting to explain the relationships between the consumption of political materials through the mass media, political interest, and political participation. Of the previously untested claims assessed in the thesis, few were supported by the evidence gathered in research.

The field of media assistance has grown ever more complex with the inclusion of ‘new media’ networks, channels, tools and practices (such as the Internet, satellite television, mobile devices, social media and citizen journalism) to the media development mix. Adding to the ferment is the increasing convergence between the formerly discrete terrains of ICT for development, media for development and (mass) media development. Much of the discussion regarding the utility and objectives of media development in general and ‘new media’ in particular has been viewed through a modernist and techno-determinist prism which offers a limited ideological view of media development and its objects and consequently, a limited set of communication approaches and strategies. This study contextualises the assumptions of media development historically and critically, with particular focus on new media’s roles and relationships with the media environment, and its objectives democratisation and development. Through the application of literature, theory and various research studies, this thesis establishes a broader view of new media’s role and diverse consequences for media development, democracy and development. The study recommends greater collaboration, contextual research and theorisation of media development and new media as part of mixed media systems and cognisant of the multi-dimensional natures of its objects of democracy and development. One implication is the need for professionalisation of the media development and media assistance sector. In relation to the influences of new media on media use and the media as an institution, it motivates the need to address digital divides and emphasise the sustainability of the practice of journalism.

Abstract There were many aspects to the complex social phenomenon of the Second Great Awakening, a period of revivals that enlisted rural and urban Americans in the cause and practices of evangelical Protestantism during the opening decades of the nineteenth century. The cause was to convert a young nation of postrevolutionary Americans and immigrants in search of a new life. The practices ranged from camp meetings, domestic devotion, mission work, Sabbath worship, and the religious instruction of children to various social and moral reform agendas embraced by the country’s broad range of conservative and liberal Protestants. The significance of two interrelated strands concerns us here, whether the discussion refers to Methodists, Baptists, Congregationalists, or Adventists. On the one hand, the revival of evangelical Protestantism meant for its participants the return to the primitive truth of Christianity as experienced in the press and duress of camp-meeting conversion or congregational renewal. On the other hand, the success of the revival, its staying power, depended on subsequent application of the new vision of purpose through the convert’s involvement in such voluntary efforts as tract distribution and the formation of sabbath societies or through the consumption of tracts, the practice of temperance or abstinence, and the attendance of church or associational meetings. The benevolent work of the voluntary organizations such as the American Bible Society (ABS), the American Sunday School Union (ASSU), and the American Tract Society (ATS) provided the activity to which converted or rededicated Christians applied their commitment.

Reflection on the scientific level of new media practices and systematization of a positive experience is impossible without identifying and describing the problem components and contradictions that characterize the modern informa­tion space in Russia or its particular regions. First of all, it determines the fact that the first decades of the 21st century marked the beginning of a new stage in the study of rapidly transforming media systems. Secondly, when studying the impact of these processes on the representatives of modern Russian society as a whole and its groups, the digital revolution assumes that not only the mo­bilization resources of social theories and actual practices are defined, but also predetermines the formation of a legal framework for the mass media, which must meet the requirements of time and the demands of society. The third part of the monograph “Mass Media as a Mediator of Communicative-Cultural Memory” is devoted to this problem. The legal field of journalism of the digital age and the legal aspect of the identity of Russians are considered in the context of their mutual influence. The axiological context of ethical and philosophical dominance in modern media texts and the analysis of the role of the media in maintaining positive ethnic identity has allowed the authors to consider several problematic nodes of actual practice at various levels of social dynamics. In particular, it has been proved that since it is through culture, as well as through media culture as a special type of culture, that the individual is socialized and society thus largely regulates the behaviour of individuals and groups, the consideration of culture as an Univer­sum opens wide prospects for research into the functioning of journalism as a social institution under the new conditions. The results of the sociological research carried out by the authors testi­fied that professional activity for the overwhelming number of respondents in conditions of active influence of the global network and possibilities of new information technologies became inseparable with personal intentions. They are reflected in their public discourse, the product of a more or less argumentative discussion of a fact, a problem situation, which is based on an openly broadcast text. It has been proved that modern practice allows the public discourse of a journalist, which influences the formation of primarily communicative memory of media audience representatives, to be differentiated into three levels: com­municative-event, communicative-containing and communicative-predictive. Today, mass media should be not only an information resource but also a platform (channel, tool) for presenting the whole range of opinions and de­veloping various initiatives of active representatives of this or that societies. Information activities of non-professionals in the media sphere, most often referred to as civic journalism, should in practice become an important factor in the development of conventional (contractual) and communication (dialogue) strategies. At the same time, the mythologization of reality, even via ethnic ste­reotypes broadcast by some media and bloggers, is a complex and controversial formation that manifests itself specifically at different levels of mass conscious­ness. It can contribute both to the emergence of new images, different views of reality, and the accumulation of incorrect opinions, false ideas, manifestations of aggression. The result is social, cultural, religious and political myths, sometimes even leading to various antisocial actions. Therefore, it is concluded that professional media activity requires from communicators, along with ethical and legal enlightenment and active life po­sition manifestation, the skills of creative (non-traditional, non-stereotypical) information expression in media texts.

From the beginning of theological education in the United States, pastors, priests, and rabbis have been educated as leaders in public life by being producers of culture. This chapter describes how theological schools prepared clergy for leadership in five social arenas: families, congregations, schools, voluntary societies, and published media. Families were the seedbeds of religious identity and character, congregations became charismatic communities of piety and action, schools developed cultural capital and moral practices, voluntary societies mobilized resources and mass movements to reshape society, and popular media built national communities of religious identity and reform. These five social arenas also operated in harmony for clergy and religious communities to influence public morality and social discourse. Through their leadership in family life, educating youth, writing and publishing, and leading voluntary associations, the clergy mobilized aspects of their religious traditions to shape public narratives, symbols, and practices. In turn, this wider social engagement helped expand and renew the religious traditions they represented.

In a contemporary society in which individuals declare themselves increasingly busy, it appears that the prominent modality of relaxation and sometimes getting informed is the Internet. The modern age is defined by consumerism, advanced technology, globalization and explosive development of Mass Media. Adolescents and young adults have various information alternatives at their disposal, but also a high level of expectations from their social and professional environment. Therefore, feelings of doubt, anxiety and uncertainty may emerge, and different inferiority complexes can develop, making one reach an impossibility of developing one's identity, in a form of compensatory mechanisms that appear at the attitudinal and behavioral level. The present article aims to present the results of studies performed by our team on different groups of subjects aged from 15 to 24 years, as a starting point for informing the population about the medical risks they are exposed to, to prevent the effects of these behaviours that affect the overall functioning of the individual.

Consideration of aspects of the functioning of mass media in society requires a comprehensive approach based on universal media theory. The article presents an attempt to consider public events in terms of a functional approach to understanding the media, proposed by media theorist Dennis McQuayl in the theory of mass communication. Public events are analyzed, on the one hand, as a complex object of journalistic reflection and, on the other hand, as a situational media that examines the relationship of agents of the social and media fields in the space of communication interaction. Taking into account philosophical approaches to the interpretation of the concept of event, considering its semantic spectrum, specificity of use and synonyms in the Ukrainian language, a working definition of the concept of public event is given. Based on case-analysis of public events, In accordance with the functions of the media the functions of public events are outlined. This is is promising for the development of study on typology of public events in the context of mass communication theory. The realization of the functions of public events as situational media is illustrated with such vivid examples of cultural events as «Gogolfest» and «Book Forum in Lviv». The author shows that a functional approach to understanding public events in society and their place in the space of mass communication, opens prospects for studying the role of media in reflecting the phenomena of social reality, clarifying the presence and quality of communication between media producers and media consumers.

This report summarizes, and builds on, some of the author’s previous conceptual work. It approaches the definition of terrorism from five angles: (i) by focusing on the history of terrorism; (ii) by focusing on the psychology of ‘terror’ (the threat and fear factor); (iii) by focusing on forms of political violence other than terrorist violence; (iv) by focusing on the terrorist act; and (v) by focusing on the terrorist. Subsequently it addresses the question who should have definition power? The author looks at how terrorists, victims of terrorism, religious authorities, mass and social media, national governments, the United Nations, and members from academia have tried to define terrorism. In his conclusion, the author pleads for a narrow definition of terrorism. The main body of the text is followed by a sample of definitions of terrorism and a bibliography of books, book chapters, and articles on the subject.

The problems of the correlation of cosmopolitan and national identities are too complex to be unambiguous assessment, let alone alternative values (related to the ecological paradigm and the spiritual traditions of other cultures). However, it is obvious that without preserving the national identity, the integrity and independence of the national state becomes problematic. On the other hand, without taking into account the consequences of information wars and aggressive cosmopolitan tendencies of global media culture, there is a threat of losing the national information space and displacing it to the periphery of socio-political and economic life in Ukraine and in the modern world. In the process of working on research issues, the author of the article came out on the principles of objectivity, systematic and determinism, which in combination of their observance made it possible to determine the influence of the post-industrial information society on the formation of a new type of mass consciousness. As a result of the influence of globalization processes, there was a filling of the domestic information space with a supernational mass culture of entertainment, which in most cases leads to the spread of a primitive world outlook based on the ideology of consumption society, without leaving places to preserve sociocultural traditions and national identity. Therefore, given the problems of preserving national identity, it is necessary should be mentioned the information security of the state, which occupies one of the most important places, among various aspects of information security, since the unresolved problem of protection of the national information space significantly complicates the processes of formation of national identity.

The authors explored the activity of mass media and cultural organizations aimed at clarification of the current problematic issue – preservation of Ukrainian cultural heritage under the conditions of the full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine. The authors emphasize that occupants not only destroy historic buildings, i.e. material objects, but also steal art values, destroy library and archive funds; their actions are aimed at destruction of our spirituality, identity and history. It is pointed out that there are the main streams in the work of journalists, experts, and culture figures, namely: fixation of losses, propaganda of the Ukrainian culture in the world, expert evaluation of the restitution possibilities, and filling of the culture material with patriotic sense. The full-scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine on the 24th of February 2022 led to the numerous loss of life, ruination of the military, civil and infrastructure objects. But the state-aggressor destroys and robs our culture in this war. Since the beginning of the war mass media have been actively informing about the situation in the regions, which happened to be at the line of the Russian troops attack. The information was in particular about the fact that different educational establishments, libraries and their funds, museums with valuable collections, theatres, religious buildings and historic buildings had been ruined. To tell the truth the information was incomplete due to the limited opportunities to monitor the situation. However, later it has been systematized. The work of journalists and experts contributed to this since they stated the criminal acts of Russia, informing about the ruination facts of historic, sacral, cultural monuments, devastation of many museum collections, destruction of library and archive funds. Digitalization of the Russian war crimes against Ukrainian culture became one more important work aimed at preservation of the Ukrainian cultural heritage. It was done by means of interactive maps of the Ukrainian cultural losses and it enables documenting crimes of the occupant army and spreading this information at the international level. The global far right is extremely broad in nature and far from monolithic. While the “far right” is often used as an umbrella term, using the term runs the risk of over-simplifying the differences and linkages between white supremacist, anti-immigration, nativist, and other motivating ideologies. These beliefs and political platforms fall within the far-right rubric, and too often the phrase presents a more unified image of the phenomena than is really the case. In truth, the “far right” and the individual movements that comprise it are fragmented, consisting of a number of groups that lack established leadership and cohesion. Indeed, these movements include chauvinist religious organizations, neo-fascist street gangs, and paramilitary organs of established political parties. Although such movements largely lack the mass appeal of the interwar European radical right-wing extreme, they nevertheless can inspire both premeditated and spontaneous acts of violence against perceived enemies. This report is intended to provide policymakers, practitioners, and the academic community with a roadmap of ongoing shifts in the organizational structures and ideological currents of radical right-wing extremist movements, detailing the difference between distinct, yet often connected and interlaced echelons of the far right. In particular, the report identifies and analyzes various aspects of the broader far right and the assorted grievances it leverages to recruit, which is critical to gaining a more nuanced understanding of the potential future trajectory of these movements.

Main objectives of the study are the phenomenological tools of the effectiveness of deviatological control of the influence of television text on the formation of emotional tone of society. Particular attention is paid to the additional emotional meanings that arise when speaking live due to lack of time to understand them. Because of this, emotional nuances, and often the emotional background in general, arise involuntarily, against the wishes of the author. Emphasis is placed on making appropriate recommendations to TV journalists. During the Russian aggression in the Ukrainian media, the responsibility for maintaining the proper emotional tone of society is growing. Television plays an important role in Ukraine in this regard. Deviatological control of society is weakened, so more attention should be paid to professional organizations. Since we are talking about the effectiveness of deviatological control of the influence of television text on the formation of emotional tone of society, we must first keep in mind the phenomenological tools of this influence. Recently, phenomenological tools have been used more and more often during the analysis of journalistic texts in terms of the effectiveness of their impact on the mass audience. The methods of phenomenology prove to be the most effective when it comes to various aspects of spontaneous speech, which is represented in the mass media by live television broadcasting. Additional emotional meanings arise when speaking live because of the lack of time to understand them. Because of this, emotional nuances, and often in general the emotional background, which consists, at first glance, it is unknown what, arises involuntarily, against the wishes of the author. Most often, so involuntarily and contrary to out of nowhere negative color and negative emotional background. Thus, it is not a question of creating a positive emotional background in society. Even more, it is not even about an emotionally neutral perception of reality with elements of objectivity. Everything is extremely bad in our house and in the world. Results/findings and conclusions of my research: in order to improve live broadcasting, such application of phenomenological methods in the evaluation of the text from a deviatological point of view should take place at an early stage, and may precede it (the text) utterance. Starting from Newton’s laws of motion and viscosity, this book is an introduction to fundamental aspects of fluid dynamics that are most relevant to groundwater scientists. Based on a perspective of driving versus resisting forces that govern the motion of a fluid, the author derives Darcy’s law for flow through porous media by drawing an analogy to Bernoulli’s law for fluid with negligible viscosity. By combining the effects of gravity and pressure, the author identifies hydraulic head as a convenient numerical quantity to represent the force driving groundwater flow. In contrast to the physical derivation of hydraulic head, hydraulic conductivity emerges as a parameter related to the resisting frictional forces between the mobile fluid and the stationary porous medium. These frictional seepage forces also affect the effective stress state of the porous medium, thus establishing a link to soil stability and quicksand formation. Combining Darcy’s law with the law of mass conservation leads the reader to the fundamental equations of saturated groundwater flow. Finally, the effects of capillary forces are included to establish the governing equations for unsaturated and multi-phase flow. Throughout the book, the author focuses on thoroughly illustrating and deriving the equations while applying order of magnitude analyses. This approach makes it possible to extract the most information, for example in terms of the scale of response time, without requiring explicit solutions. A number of boxes and solved exercises contain further details and links to practical applications such as the water table ratio that reflects ‘fullness’ of an aquifer and the performance of slug tests for in situ measurement of hydraulic conductivity. This book makes an important contribution to groundwater science by providing a progressive introductory explanation of the physical mechanics of groundwater flow and the accompanying socioeconomic and ecological problems that may arise.
