This essay is primarily an examination of a view, propounded by Richard Rorty at the beginning of the last decade, about the nature and existence of minds and mental states. The view is a species of eliminative materialism, and one which is of historical importance in the development of this general position. I argue that it is false. If I am aware of my own mental states by introspection (a) How can I know that other people have minds? and (b) How can I know what their mental states are? The current study investigated the experience of the Yoga Therapy for the Mind (YTFTM) 8-week course, a manualised yoga and mindfulness-based intervention, for mild to moderate depression and anxiety. Eight female students from across four YTFTM courses participated in semi-structured interviews exploring their experiences of the course.
