If, as Thomas Flanagan has asserted, ‘the importance of John Mitchel's Jail journal to the tradition of Irish separatism has been underestimated’, the appearance of James Quinn's recent short biography of Mitchel is to be welcomed. Indeed, the remarkable thing is that Quinn's was the first book-length biography of Mitchel to be published since 1938. The biographical literature on Mitchel has veered between the hagiographic and the critical before settling, ultimately, into an apparent historiographical indifference. This essay examines Mitchel's biographies, his commemoration in periodical and ephemeral sources, and the development of the historiography of this most ardent republican, concluding that a renewed interest in Mitchel is timely.

In Jail Journal (1854), John Mitchel describes receiving a hero’s welcome on his arrival in Brooklyn as an escaped convict on 29 November 1853. That same day, Austin Reed was enjoying one of his rare periods of freedom from New York State penal institutions. Reed’s recently discovered memoir, The Life and the Adventures of a Haunted Convict ( c.1858–9) – the earliest known prison memoir by an African American – uses his experiences of institutional confinement to interrogate the United States’ racialized system of constrained freedoms. By contrast, for Mitchel, freedom means escaping from the metropolitan bustle of the US North to meet fellow slavery advocates in Virginia, an account which is only briefly summarized by the editor of his memoir. Drawing on Orlando Patterson’s tripartite concept of personal, sovereignal and civic freedom, this essay examines the forms of freedom foregrounded in Reed’s and Mitchel’s prison narratives. While Reed focuses on personal freedom, Mitchel is predominantly concerned with sovereignal and civic freedom. By focusing on their common compositional contexts, the essay explores what a comparative approach to institutional confinement can teach us about the concepts of freedom conceptualized in ‘black and green’ zones of cultural contest and interchange (Lloyd and O’Neill 2009).

Abstract (sommario):

Activities of John Mitchel, the Irish patriot, are traced in the article. Special attention is paid to his attitude toward slavery, his understanding of the role and significance of the “peculiar institution” in the U. S. political system. Author comes to the conclusion that the Irish patriot was in fact highly consistent in his outlook with regard to this problem. He supported slavery, denounced abolitionists, advocated the re-opening of the African slave trade, was explicitly racist in his reasoning. He championed the South in the American Civil War. Mitchel himself seems not to have seen any contradiction in defending freedom for the Irish nation and standing for slavery in America. Nowadays supporters of the “Black Lives Matter” movement view Mitchel, first of all, as a human rights violator.

About a month after his 83rd birthday Raphael Robinson was almost wholly incapacitated by a massive stroke, and 8 weeks later, on January 27, 1995, he died of ensuing complications. Mathematics was his life. He was always working on problems—those brought to him in journals or by colleagues, and others that he invented. Just three days before his death he received word that a paper of his, originating in a published problem, was accepted for publication. His 64 publications spanned a full 6 decades, and included significant papers on number theory, combinatorics, complex analysis, and geometry, in addition to logic and set theory.Robinson was born on November 2, 1911, in National City, California. He came to Berkeley to study mathematics, obtaining an A.B. in 1932, an M.A. in 1933, and his Ph.D. in December, 1934. His dissertation was in complex analysis. He took 12 graduate courses in a variety of fields, but not one was close to logic or set theory—which was later the setting of about a quarter of his publications.After completing his studies Robinson served as Instructor for two years at Brown University, then returned for good to Berkeley in 1937, reaching the rank of full Professor in 1949. He taught a great variety of courses and was known as an excellent teacher, but was most interested in problemsolving and research and in 1972, at age 61, he elected early retirement, at considerable financial sacrifice, in order to concentrate on these pursuits.

In the annals of nineteenth-century Ireland, few disputes between public figures have been more rancorous or more significant than the fight that began in 1848 between two seemingly like-minded journalists, Charles Gavan Duffy and John Mitchel. In the mid-1840s, Duffy and Mitchel were colleagues on the most influential nationalist newspaper in Irish history, the Nation. But in 1847, relations between the two men became strained, and Mitchel resigned to start his own, more radical, paper. The former friends and colleagues soon became the bitterest of enemies. Their public quarrels over the next few years severely damaged each man's personal reputation — and also damaged the Irish nationalist cause in which each so fervently believed.Unlike many running Irish feuds, which merely exacerbate old stereotypes about the Gaels being a fractious race, the Mitchel-Duffy controversy haddirect political fallout at a critical point in the development of political separatism in Ireland. The quarrel erupted just when Irish nationalists had an unusual opportunity to bring enormous pressure to bear on the British House of Commons. The Tory party of the 1840s had been shattered, first by Sir Robert Peel's turnabout on free trade in 1846, and then by Peel's death four years later. The modern idea of nearly automatic, lifelong adhesion to strong central parties was still some years off, and the two major British parties were scrambling for friends.

Abstract (sommario):

This article deals with John Mitchel’s engagement with questions around race as articulated in his 1854 Jail Journal. Mitchel has been oft noted and condemned for his support of the Confederacy during the US Civil War, in which he lost two of his sons. His racism as it was articulated in the Southern Citizen during that period and his defence of slavery as an institution has led to numerous and open disavowals of his legacy. This article seeks to trace the development of Mitchel’s attitude towards race through a close reading of his Jail Journal in conjunction with a contemporaneous racist tract by Thomas Carlyle. This double reading will expose some of the ambiguities and ambivalences in Mitchel’s thinking in contrast to the strident pro-slavery position that he later embraced, whilst also allowing for an uncovering of his modus cogitandi that may help to explain apparent contradictions within his thought.

The Linear No Threshold (LNT) hypothesis states that ionizing radiation risk is directly proportional to dose, without a threshold. This hypothesis, along with a number of additional derived or auxiliary concepts such as radiation and tissue type weighting factors, and dose rate reduction factors, are used to calculate radiation risk estimates for humans, and are therefore fundamental for radiation protection practices. This system is based mainly on epidemiological data of cancer risk in human populations exposed to relatively high doses (above 100 mSv), with the results linearly extrapolated back to the low doses typical of current exposures. The system therefore uses dose as a surrogate for risk. There is now a large body of information indicating that, at low doses, the LNT hypothesis, along with most of the derived and auxiliary concepts, is incorrect. The use of dose as a predictor of risk needs to be re-examined and the use of dose limits, as a means of limiting risk needs to be re-evaluated. This re-evaluation could lead to large changes in radiation protection practices.

Neste artigo, apresentamos uma tradução integral e comentada da carta escrita por Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790) e endereçada a John Mitchel (1711-1768), contendo sua explicação para a formação de temporais com raios e trovões. Trata-se da primeira vez que este texto é traduzido para o português brasileiro. Na carta, redigida no auge dos estudos de Franklin em eletricidade, o norte-americano utilizou um estilo característico de muitos escritos do século XVIII, partindo de evidências experimentais e seguindo um passo-a-passo indutivo. Para corroborar suas proposições, ele valeu-se extensivamente de sua teoria de um único fluido elétrico, então recém-elaborada.

Aortoenteric fistula is an uncommon cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding, which is life-threatening if not treated. This complication may occur even months to years after surgery [Mitchel 1995]. It is commonly observed in patients who have undergone previous aortic surgery and rarely occurs in patients with a history of gastrointestinal tract surgery [Brock 1953]. The diagnosis of aortoenteric fistula depends on a high level of clinical suspicion. Herein, we report a case of a 53-year-old man who underwent surgical treatment because of new-onset severe gastrointestinal bleeding that was related to an aortoenteric fistula.

In his book, Fire in the Big House, criminal justice historian, Mitchel P. Roth provides readers with an in-depth analysis of America’s deadliest penal disaster. The book specifically examines a horrific fire which occurred at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Columbus, Ohio on April 21, 1930—Easter Monday. Even though 320 prisoners perished in this devastating event (plus two more inmates who died later of gunshots indirectly related to the fire), the author notes that there has never been a scholarly book devoted to this topic. Although this event caused only $11,000 in damage to the Columbus institution, Roth contends that it still ranks as America’s third-worst fire (excluding 9/11).

O artigo apresenta os desdobramentos de um minicurso de introdução à plataforma Scratch, desenvolvido ao longo do segundo semestre de 2018 junto aos participantes do Programa de Residência Docente do Colégio Pedro II. A metodologia de trabalho buscou valorizar a autonomia, levando em consideração as concepções da obra de Paulo Freire. Os referenciais de suporte foram o construcionismo de Seymour Papert, em diálogo com a abordagem do trabalho com tecnologia proposta por Mitchel Resnick: uma aprendizagem baseada em projetos. Os resultados mostraram que através da formação continuada docente é possível promover a autonomia, a expressão criativa e o trabalho colaborativo com suporte da tecnologia, com desdobramentos positivos potenciais sobre a qualidade do ensino.

In Tennessee Williams’ play A Streetcar Named Desire, Stanley Kowalski has often been seen as the main reason why Blanche DuBois mentally falls apart at the end of the play. This is emphasized by the fact that he rapes her and that she subsequently is committed to a mental institution. However, I find that the role of Harold (Mitch) Mitchell thereby is downplayed and underestimated. This article argues that he in fact is the real cause of Blanche’s psychological downfall. Critics such as Judith J. Thompson refer to Mitch as elevated to the romanticized ideal of Allan Grey, Blanche's late husband. Blanche sees a potential new husband in Mitch, and when she realizes that he knows about her troubled past, she mentally collapses. While Stanley’s final act certainly is cruel and devastating, Mitch’s rejection of Blanche is what essentially sets off her final madness.

The poetic approach to constructing social reality is a significant source of reflection on the livedexperience of voiceless ordinary men and women. Poetic expression becomes a source of power andresistance expressed through language. Social reality expressed in poetry constructs a vision of historybeyond time. The civilizational heritage of Multan dates back to the time of Rag Ved. The City's richesattracted many conquerors, subdued but never defeated. As Poet himself is the product of land andculture, Riffat Abbas's poetry expresses all the imprints that land has carved on his Cognition. His poetryrepresents the phenomena of continuity and preservation of cultural heritage in the face of all historicalupheavals. The paper aims to analyze the social reality constructed in Riffat Abbas's poetry opting forthe method of discourse analysis given by Mitchel Foucault to study the progressive trends on socialattributes, societal relations, and socio-political system.

<p>Mitchel Lasser, em sua aclamada obra Judicial Deliberations: a comparative analysis of judicial transparency and legitimacy (2009), oferece uma análise comparativa de três tribunais: a Corte de Cassação francesa, a Suprema Corte americana e a Corte Europeia de Justiça. Seu principal foco é mostrar que a visão comparatista tradicional, que ele atribui a autores como Dawson e Merryman, não corresponde à realidade. Lasser compara as práticas argumentativas e deliberativas dos três tribunais e as consequências que essas práticas têm sobre dois elementos: transparência e legitimidade. Pretendo argumentar que, mesmo que aceitemos as descrições que Lasser faz de cada um dos sistemas jurídicos, a falta de clareza em torno desses conceitos (legitimidade e transparência) dificultam a avaliação de alguns dos argumentos centrais da obra. Por fim, as evidências apresentadas a respeito de algumas das afirmações do livro não parecem suficientes. </p>

Abstract Forty-three stool samples and rectal swabs were collected from diarrhoeic and 20 non-diarrhoiec patients under 5 years of age at various general hospitals in Lagos. A total of 110 faecal samples from animals (101 from chickens and 9 from pigs) were obtained from Mitchel farm, Agege and Oshodi -Isolo Local Government farms at Ejigbo. Campylobacter species were isolated from 6 (13.9%) of 43 children with gastroenteritis and none from 20 asymptomatic subjects. Forty-nine (48.5%) isolates from the hundred and one faecal specimen were isolated from chicken, while 3 (33.33%) out of 9 were from pigs. Campylobacter jejuni was the most prevalent accounting for 79% of the total isolates and C. coli accounted for 25% . All the human strains were gentamicin sensitive, while streptomicin and cloxacillin were resistant. Erythromycin had a high activity (83.3%) on human strains and only 59.6% activity on animal strains. About ten percent (9.6%) of the strains produced beta-lactamase.

The contemporary natural law theory was grounded in the philosophical and the jurisprudential work of Australian legal and moral philosopher John Mitchell Finnis. He reaffirmed the natural law and also corrected some of false notions about it which were dominant through the history of legal philosophy. Finnis moral and legal philosophy could be understood by the specific theoretical figure - moral argument for law. This theoretical concept implies unity of two mutually connected moments which are necessary for a philosophical treatment of any socially relevant phenomena: methodological and epistemological as well as practical. The meeting point of these two philosophically relevant dimensions is theory of practical rationality exposed in the philosophy of John Mitchell Finnis. By grounding his concept of natural law on the theory of practical rationality, John Finnis historically contextualize it. He made some sort of specific anti metaphysical concept of natural law theory that is alternative to the classical natural law as well as to the legal positivism, which mainly exposed in the legal theories of Hans Kelsen and H.L.A Hart.
