Abstract (sommario):
The systemic administration of autologous bone marrow (BM) derived mononuclear cells (MNCs) is under investigation as a novel therapeutic modality for the treatment of ischemic stroke. Autologous applications raise the possibility that MNCs could potentially be stored as a banked source. There have been no studies that investigate the effects of cryopreservation of BM-MNCs on their functional abilities in stroke models. In the present study, C57BL/6 mice were subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo) for 60 minutes and then divided into two treatment groups: fresh MNCs versus cryopreserved MNCs. BM-MNCs were collected at 22 hours after MCAo and were stored in liquid nitrogen for 12 months in cryopreserved MNCs group. BM-MNCs cellular viability, composition, and phenotype of the various subpopulations of mice BM-MNCs were evaluated by flow cytometry, and the behavioral recovery of stroke animals was tested with freshly harvested MNCs versus cryopreserved MNCs by corner test and ladder rung test. We found that long-term cryopreservation negatively impacts the cellular viability of bone marrow MNCs. Cryopreservation also alters the cellular composition of various subpopulations within the MNCs. However, despite the changes observed in cryopreserved cells, both fresh and frozen MNCs have similar beneficial effect on behavioral and histological outcomes.

Abstract (sommario):
There is limited empirical research on the internationalisation processes, strategies and operations of Asian multinational corporations (MNCs), particularly MNC's based in Malaysia. The emergence and development of an MNC from this developing country represents a significant addition to the literature on this topic which augments and supplements the information already available with regard to nascent MNCs from Asian Newly Industrialised Countries (NIC's). Drawing on primary data from in-depth interviews with 12 key executives from Sime Darby Berhad (SDB), a developing Malaysian-based MNC, this paper will examine and investigate the firm's internationalisation process, its characteristics and strategies, including motivations, patterns, and sources of competitive advantage. The empirical findings, limitations and areas for further research are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
Aim: To test if the impairment of mononuclear cell (MNC) migration in patients with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is due to the reduction of the endoglin (ENG) receptor on the cell surface and oxidative stress. Method: MNCs of HHT patients and normal controls were subjected to migration assay. Fractions of MNCs were pre-incubated with antibodies specific to HHT causative genes ENG [hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia type 1 (HHT1)] or activin receptor-like kinase 1 [ALK1, hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia type 2 (HHT2)], AMD3100 or Diprotin-A to block ENG, ALK1 C-X-C chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) or CD26 (increased in HHT1 MNCs) before migration assay. The MNCs were allowed to migrate toward stromal cell-derived factor-1alpha (SDF-1alpha) for 18 h. The expression of CXCR4, CD26, superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) and glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1) in MNCs and nitric oxide levels in the plasma were analyzed. Results: Compared to the controls, fewer HHT1 MNCs and similar number of HHT2 MNCs migrated toward SDF-1. Diprotin-A pre-treatment improved HHT1 MNC-migration, but had no effect on normal and HHT2 MNCs. Pre-incubation with an anti-ENG antibody reduced the migration of normal MNCs. Diprotin-A did not improve the migration of ENG antibody pre-treated MNCs. Anti-ALK1 antibody had no effect on MNC-migration. AMD3100 treatment reduced normal and HHT MNC-migration. ENG mRNA level was reduced in HHT1 and HHT2 MNCs. ALK1 mRNA was reduced in HHT2 MNCs only. CD26 expression was higher in HHT1 MNCs. Pre-treatment of MNCs with anti-ENG or anti-ALK1 antibody had no effect on CD26 and CXCR4 expression. The expression of antioxidant enzymes, SOD1, was reduced in HHT1 MNCs, which was accompanied with an increase of ROS in HHT MNCs and nitric oxide in HHT1 plasma. Conclusions: Reduction of ENG receptor on MNC surface reduced monocyte migration toward SDF-1alpha independent of CD26 expression. Increased oxidative stress could alter HHT MNC migration behavior.

Abstract (sommario):
Background During the Covid-19 pandemic, the negative effects of wearing a mouth-nose cover (MNC) on interpersonal functioning have been discussed in public media but empirical studies on how wearing MNCs affect social judgements are sparse. In the present study, we investigated the effects of MNCs on trustworthiness appraisals, the influence of changes due to MNCs in evaluating joy, and the relationship between a social-cognitive appraisal bias and a participant’s characteristics. Methods All participants (N = 165) judged the intensity of happiness and trustworthiness in calm facial stimuli presented with and without a surgical mask covering part of the face. We analysed the relationship of changes in judgements evoked by MNCs to participants’ evaluations of MNCs as protective tools and explored their associations with the burden experienced by wearing MNCs, compliance to behaviour recommendations, their risk associated with the pandemic, and their levels of psychological distress. Results Overall, calm facial stimuli covered with MNCs were evaluated as less trustworthy and, to an even stronger extent, less happy than uncovered facial stimuli. However, participants varied in whether they showed a negative or positive evaluation of faces with MNCs; the negative bias was stronger in those participants who attributed lower protective potential to MNCs, experienced a higher burden while wearing MNCs, wore MNCs less often, and experienced a higher level of psychological distress. Conclusions A negative bias in trustworthiness appraisals of faces with a positive emotional expression covered by MNCs is linked to a participant’s evaluation of MNCs as inefficient and burdening and their experience of high psychological distress.

Abstract (sommario):
This study aimed to assess the efficacy of Quality and Quantity media-cultured mononuclear cells (QQ-MNCs) for promoting nerve regeneration in a mouse sciatic nerve transection model. Human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PB-MNCs) and QQ-MNCs derived from healthy volunteers were used/compared. The left sciatic nerve was surgically transected in 27 mice. After complete nerve transection was confirmed, end-to-end direct epineurial nerve repair was performed using 9–0 nylon. Fibrin glue was applied to the tissue around the injury site to limit diffusion of the study treatment followed by application of 0.5 ml phosphate buffered saline (PBS) or PB-MNCs (2x106 cells) or QQ-MNCs (2x106 cells) to the injury site. The skin was then closed using 6–0 nylon. Histomorphology, immunohistochemistry, electrophysiologic examination, and functional assessment were evaluated at 12-weeks followed by euthanasia and subsequent harvesting of the left sciatic nerves and the left and right gastrocnemius muscles for examination. QQ-MNCs mice exhibited significant improvement in all histomorphologic parameters (axon fiber diameter, myelin thickness, percentage of nerve density) and immunohistochemistry assays (S100, SOX10, GFAP, neurofilament, IL-1β, VEGF, anti-HNA, TNF-α, vWF) compared to PBS mice (all p < 0.05). QQ-MNCs mice also had a significantly higher Basso Mouse Scale score compared to PBS mice (p = 0.018). The percentage of nerve density adjacent to the injury site was significantly higher in QQ-MNCs mice than in PB-MNCs mice (p = 0.049). IL-1β expression was significantly lower in QQ-MNCs mice than in PB-MNCs mice (p = 0.01). QQ-MNCs mice demonstrated significantly better functional and histomorphologic outcomes of nerve regeneration compared to PB-MNCs mice and PBS mice.

Abstract (sommario):
We have previously shown that protein production and mRNA expression of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), and interleukin-3 are decreased in stimulated mononuclear cells (MNCs) from human umbilical cord compared with adult peripheral blood. These deficiencies may contribute to the increased susceptibility of neonates to infection. Macrophage colony- stimulating factor (M-CSF) regulates the proliferation, differentiation, and functional activation of monocytes. In the present study, we compared the regulation of M-CSF gene expression and protein production from stimulated cord and adult MNCs. Upon adhesion to tissue culture flasks, both cord and adult MNCs constitutively expressed M-CSF mRNA. In response to both adhesion and recombinant human GM-CSF (rhGM- CSF) stimulation for 120 hours, radioimmunoassays and bioassays showed that cord MNCs produced twofold to threefold less M-CSF protein compared with adult MNCs. Northern blot analysis also showed a fourfold decrease in M-CSF mRNA expression in both unstimulated and GM-CSF- induced cord versus adult MNCs. M-CSF mRNA expression in both cord and adult MNCs peaked between 16 and 24 hours and decreased to normal levels by 48 hours. We next determined the relative rates of transcription of the M-CSF gene by nuclear run-on assays in both cord and adult MNCs. The basal level signal of the M-CSF gene was similar between cord and adult MNCs. The transcriptional rate after stimulation with rhGM-CSF appeared to increase to a similar extent in both cord and adult MNCs (130% +/- 10% v 150% +/- 15%, C v A, n = 3, mean +/- SD). The comparative stability of M-CSF mRNA from cord versus adult MNCs was next determined by actinomycin D decay studies. The half-life of M-CSF mRNA from stimulated adult MNCs was 70 +/- 7.0 minutes (n = 4) compared with 47 +/- 2.8 minutes (n = 3) from stimulated cord MNCs (mean +/- SD, P < .05). To further determine the involvement of labile protein factors in posttranscriptional regulation, cord and adult MNCs were incubated with cycloheximide (CHX; 10 micrograms/mL). There was a significant increase in the induction of M-CSF mRNA by CHX treatment in both cord and adult MNCs. The increase of M-CSF mRNA induction by CHX was 2.5 times higher in cord MNCs compared with that in adult MNCs. These results suggest that there are one or more labile proteins that regulate M-CSF transcript stability in both cord and adult MNCs.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose Prior studies on product standardization–adaptation in multinational corporations (MNCs) have revealed environmental factors that can influence the choices of MNCs. However, these studies have not shown how these choices are made behind the scenes in new product development (NPD). In many industries, MNCs face the dual pressures for product standardization and adaptation from the environment. This study aims to explore how MNCs facing dual pressures can make choices of product standardization–adaptation in NPD. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative case study of four high-performing MNCs was conducted. The four MNCs were selected using the theoretical sampling approach. Data were collected, mainly through 74 semi-structured interviews. Coding was conducted and four aggregate dimensions were generated. Findings This study reveals that choices of product standardization–adaptation are made through a process in MNCs’ NPD, including four steps – organizing for NPD, organizational diversity, cross-unit integration and combination of design practices. In addition, MNCs adopt different process variants to address different environmental pressures. Research limitations/implications This research focuses on high-performing MNCs in manufacturing industries. Future research can explore different types of firms. Practical implications Managers in MNCs should focus more on the process of choices for product standardization–adaptation, than on the level of product standardization–adaptation. They should also keep monitoring the environmental pressure and employ experienced engineers. Originality/value By focusing on NPD, the authors shift the attention from product standardization–adaptation to product feature standardization–adaptation in MNCs, which is a fresh and refined perspective. The authors show a process in NPD composed of activities and mechanisms that managers might use for handling product standardization–adaptation challenges in MNCs. The authors contribute to the area of cross-unit integration in MNCs’ NPD by revealing mental mechanisms for mitigating tensions in cross-unit interactions.

Abstract (sommario):
Multinational corporations (MNCs) are increasingly competing on their ability to utilise knowledge sourced from various parts of the world. In order to draw full advantage of a multinational presence, harnessing the potential of peripheral knowledge assets is a main strategic imperative. This thesis examines an activity that is central to MNCs use of such peripheral knowledge assets, namely the transfer of knowledge from one subunit to another. The knowledge transfer problem is approached in two ways: the extent to which subunits engage in knowledge transfer to other units in the organisation and the performance of knowledge transfer projects. The evidence provided in this thesis is derived from the analyses of quantitative data collected in two separate projects. A central argument concerns the importance of studying performance of knowledge transfer projects. Knowledge transfer is seen as distinct and purposeful projects. It is suggested that the performance of these transfer projects can be evaluated along the dimensions of transfer efficiency and transfer effectiveness. Results indicate that the extent to which subunits transfer knowledge to other MNC subunits is influenced by the presence of lateral integrative mechanisms as well as the presence of incentives to engage in knowledge transfer and subunit socialisation. Moreover, the operational structure of the subunit influences the extent of outbound knowledge transfer. The present evidence also suggests that subunit capabilities to knowledge transfer can be developed by accumulation of transfer experiences. However, even if subunits engage in knowledge transfer to an increasing degree, it is not self-evident that they become better at the task. In particular, these capabilities seem to be specific to source-recipient dyads, i.e. only experience from previous interactions in this dyad increase transfer performance. Evidence also suggests that authoritative pressure and centralised formal structures can lead to superficial collaboration in knowledge transfer. Finally, it is shown that despite the past years increasing interest in inter-firm networking as means to develop and access knowledge to innovative processes, such external interaction in subunits may compromise the possibilities to subsequently transfer the newly developed knowledge to be exploited in other parts of the MNC.

Abstract (sommario):
It is necessary for multinational corporations (MNCs) to manage their knowledge flows effectively in order to gain or maintain competitive advantage. The knowledge management (KM) process needs to be cost effective, which can be achieved through a standardized “one-size fits all” strategy. Some scholars argue that a standardized KM strategy is not possible in international KM, since countries are different and cultural differences makes it necessary to adapt the KM strategy with regard to different cultures. It becomes a question about standardization versus adaptation of KM. This study aims on describing the factors affecting international KM and thereby whether it is appropriate to standardize or adapt international KM. The empirical findings in this study derive from qualitative interviews with internationally experienced managers at three MNCs with subsidiaries spread over the world. By studying different factors that affect KM, it is shown that the MNCs mainly benefit from standardized KM strategies.

Abstract (sommario):
<p> The current state of the global economy is in constant transformation. This transformation results in new industries, technologies, and markets. In order to effectively maintain relevance throughout these transformations, organizations must be equipped with the ability to manage change and foster innovation. An organization that is unable to adapt to the rapid changes taking place in this economy will be at greater risk for failure. Context, whether it be cultural, geographic, social or a mix of several overlapping dynamics, is the silent decider of organizational paradigms. The process of transferring organizational assets, such as strategy or culture, from one context to another, is known as recontextualization. This thesis seeks to address the significance of recontextualized organizational assets within a Multinational Corporation (MNC) and the impact on its employees and management structures. The case study will examine how recontextualization shapes a French Headquarter (HQ) - US subsidiary relationship, and more specifically how this contextual dynamic impacts the reception of a HQled change management mission. The conclusion of this thesis will provide perspective for future attempts at collaborative change must integrate greater awareness of recontextualization, particularly during their planned strategic organizational transformation. The supporting research presented throughout this work encompasses interviews with organizational development leaders, cross-cultural management and recontextualization experts, as well as employee testimonials and an autoethnography illustrating the complexities of the HQ-subsidiary relationship.</p><p>

Abstract (sommario):
Recently, facing the fierce competition around the world, the headquarters of many MNCs are under pressure to make a decision quickly and effectively for their global marketing strategy. Under such a situation, how effectively the headquarters can obtain knowledge regarding the market situation of subsidiaries around the world is important. In this research, the concept of reverse knowledge transfer is applied to the space of the headquarters' acquisition of knowledge from subsidiaries, from the perspective of decision-making for global marketing strategies. In the extant literature, however, studies on reverse knowledge transfer analyzing the mechanisms dynamically in a multi-faceted way from the perspective of transferring marketing-related knowledge are rare. In order to capture the reverse knowledge transfer mechanisms in a MNC precisely and dynamically, three case studies of the headquarters of an American MNC and its Japanese subsidiary were conducted. Through analysis of the case studies, two new factors were found; one is 'bypass effect', and the other is 'heeding capacity'. By bringing in those new factors, a new dynamic model for reverse knowledge transfer is proposed.

Abstract (sommario):
<p>Background: The past decades two trends has been detected in the society. First of all, the new economy has brought along globalisation as a striking trend, and secondly we have been hit by some kind o f"projectification". The two trends seem to work against each other on several levels and global companies have a hard time coping with both at the same time. </p><p>Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to describe how an international development project is organised and show what impacts a MNC structure has on its projects concerning management and communication. Method: In order to reach an understanding, a qualitative case study was performed, and several interviews with people within a Ericsson project was made. In addition, Ericsson internal material and project documentation was used. </p><p>Findings: We found that the global structure very much has an impact on the project studied and that it did not have the characteristics that, literature of today describes, is common for projects. Since the project consist of several independent subsidiary we would not like to call it a project organised in a matrix, but rather described as an "intra-corporational consortium". Because of this structure, there are implications for management and communication as well. The management, we believe, is more done by "good will", and there is a strong resistance for communicating since there is a belief that information will handle all problems.</p>

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractPessimism about the effects of official development assistance (ODA) on the poorest countries (base of the pyramid; BoP) has raised expectations of social business by multinational corporations (MNCs) since the end of the twentieth century. First, this chapter summarizes the historical developments focused on the role of MNCs in alleviating poverty at the BoP (Sustainable Development Goals [SDGs] 1, 3, and 6) through delivery of affordable products and services, following activities of non-governmental organizations, growing awareness of corporate social responsibility, and framing of development goals by United Nations agencies. Next, it discusses BoP’s shift from its role as a marketplace to a production base or source of innovation, as MNCs have established global production networks. We argue that this has changed the BoP business toward contributing to the achievement of SDGs 5, 8, and 9. Finally, MNCs are required to address not only social challenges at the BoP, but also environmental challenges (SDGs 13) in both emerging and developed countries. To balance these overall SDG-related challenges with MNCs’ own interests, BoP business is further evolving into SDG business management, and MNCs will be increasingly required to redefine their role from a sustainability perspective.

Abstract (sommario):
There is perception within business community of multinational companies (MNC) that Small-Middle Size enterprises (SME) have limited potential to compete with them. The purpose of the study was to explore successful SMEs competitive advantages vs. their MNCs rivals on local markets. Technology SMEs with bigger to MNCs market shares and above average maturity level were selected for this study. Three production industry sectors were chosen: household chemistry, electrical/electronic assembly, and chemical products. Methodology was an assessment of SMEs and MNCs competitive advantages enablers by their soft and hard nature, performed by individual interviews and questionnaires. It was found that in order to successfully compete with MNCs, SMEs can use the right set of dominantly soft elements of organizational structure: selected ranger of operational strategies, skills and values such as deep relationships with customers, flexible agile response to their needs, niche bespoke products based on strong technology expertise, lean organizational structure and entrepreneurial behaviors. Some examples are given.

Abstract (sommario):
Multinational corporations (MNCs) significantly contribute to globalizing research and development, particularly in emerging economies like Indonesia. As Indonesia aims to achieve the "Making Indonesia 4.0" vision, attracting foreign investment to bolster its medium-high and high technology industry becomes crucial. This study conducts an exploration within institutional theory concerning the influence of 'distance' measures on the level of control exerted by MNCs in a host country. Focusing on Indonesia's medium-high and high technology industry, the research investigates the relationships between formal and informal institutional distances and MNCs' strategic control decisions. Statistical analyses support the hypotheses, affirming the significance of both formal and informal institutional distance in shaping MNCs' inclination toward majority stake deals in the targeted industry. The findings contribute to a nuanced understanding of MNCs' strategic decision-making in an industry specific context. Which necessitates MNCs to balance managing partnerships to reduce strategic control in a formally distant host country, while at the same time maintaining a strong grip on technology-intensive activities to mitigate risks tied to reduce interdependence in an informally distant host country.

Abstract (sommario):
The main goal of the paper is to identify, analyze, and compare the relationships between the activities in the field of HRM and performance results of MNCs in Eastern and Western Europe with a view to the value ascribed to human resources as a strategic competitive factor, HRM centralization practices and the importance of HRM knowledge flows between the headquarters (HQ) and their subsidiaries. The research sample covered 200 HQs of MNCs and their local subsidiaries. The empirical research results show that there are some identifiable and statistically significant differences between MNCs operating in Eastern and Western Europe within the range of relationships defined above. Our study, therefore, represents an original effort at examining these relationships.

Abstract (sommario):
We study the role of multinationals (MNCs) in facilitating firm-level and aggregate structural transformation. Using a stylized model of multinational production and trade, we show that an inward multinational liberalization in the manufacturing sector raises employment in host country firms, and decreases manufacturing employment, while also raising services employment, in the parent firms. We also show the conditions under which aggregate structural transformation occurs. We test the models firm-level predictions by using confidential microdata from Japan. We study the response of Japanese MNC parents and their affiliates in China to an exogenous change in China's openness to foreign direct investment (FDI). We find that in industries where inward FDI was encouraged, Japan MNCs' affiliates in China experienced increases in their employment. We also find that MNC parents in the encouraged industries experienced decreases in home country manufacturing employment and increases in home country services and R&amp;D employment. Finally, using microdata for several advanced and middle-income countries, we decompose the change in overall manufacturing employment shares into MNC and non-MNC components. We find a significant role for MNCs across all countries, suggesting the mechanism we highlight is an important global driver of structural transformation.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper analyses the multinational companies’ policies in the green transition and its consequences for the environment, society, and economy. Multinational corporations (MNCs) in green transition operate across numerous nations and sectors and have the resources, and experience in sustainable development. MNCs became increasingly involved in large-scale renewable energy project development, such as wind and solar power, serving as project developers, investors, and technology suppliers. It is already well recognized that MNCs may play a key role in disseminating essential climate change mitigation technologies, particularly the transfer of knowledge and capacities from lead markets to the rest of the globe. The green transition faces many challenges: high costs, regulatory barriers, technological advancements, and costeffectiveness. These approaches explain the global reach of environmental problems and enhance significant changes in green policy. MNCs’ policies contribute to sustainability but face the multiple challenges caused by local regulations in environment protection policy, investment risks and financing constraints, and climate changes. MNCs provide policies in the green transition by integrating sustainability into their business strategies and operations. The legislation, incentives, and supportive frameworks of the subsidiaries’ country destination create the basis for the involvement of MNCs in the green transition.

Abstract (sommario):
Multinational corporations (MNCs) avoid taxes by shifting their profits from countries where real activity takes place towards tax havens, depriving governments worldwide of billions of tax revenue. Earlier research investigating the scale and distribution of profit shifting has faced methodological and data challenges, both of which we address. First, we propose a logarithmic function to model the extremely non-linear relationship between the location of profits and tax rates faced by MNCs at those locations – that is, the extreme concentration of profits without corresponding economic activity in a small number of low-tax jurisdictions. We show that the logarithmic model allows for a more accurate identification of profit shifting than linear and quadratic models. Second, we apply the logarithmic model to newly available country-by-country reporting data for large MNCs – this provides information on the activities of large MNCs, including for the first time many low- and lower-middle-income countries. We estimate that MNCs shifted US$1 trillion of profits to tax havens in 2016, which implies approximately US$200-300 billion in tax revenue losses worldwide. MNCs headquartered in the United States and Bermuda are the most aggressive at shifting profits towards tax havens, while MNCs headquartered in India, China, Mexico and South Africa the least. We establish which countries gain and lose most from profit shifting: the Cayman Islands, Luxembourg, Bermuda, Hong Kong and the Netherlands are among the most important tax havens, whereas low- and lower-middle-income countries tend to lose more tax revenue relative to their total tax revenue. Our findings thus support the arguments of low- and lower-middle-income countries that they should be represented on an equal footing during international corporate tax reform debates.

Abstract (sommario):
Intra-firm trade, from parents to affiliates, has been combined with standard models of multinational production (MP) to deliver gravity-style predictions for foreign affiliates' sales. Nonetheless, the evidence shows that intra-firm trade is concentrated among a small set of large multinational firms. Using firm-level data from 35 countries, we document that only firms belonging to multinational corporations (MNCs) in the upper tail of the firms size distribution are significantly affected by the distance to their parents. We present a simple framework featuring MNCs selection into intra-firm trade and derive the analytical gravity equations that are consistent with the empirical findings.

Abstract (sommario):
Multinational Corporations (MNCs) strategically position their production facilities near customers to counter the “trade gravity effect” where geographical distance reduces foreign sales through shipping costs and trade barriers. Despite this, the foreign sales of larger firms engaged in intra-firm trade remain influenced by the distance from headquarters. The transfer of intermediate inputs, technology, and processes from headquarters to affiliates is vital for enabling cross-border production and knowledge exchange. However, it reintroduces shipping costs, further diminishing affiliate sales. Reducing barriers to intra-firm trade can help enhance knowledge transfer across countries and narrow global productivity and income gaps.

Abstract (sommario):
This study is an effort to identify the process by which firms venture into GVCs and the obstacles faced by firms once they have been immersed in it. We have focused on two particular GVCs: the aerospace GVC and the software and IT services GVC. Through the case studies, we analyzed the nature of inter-firm linkages and how they affected the potential of scaling up by local suppliers in the value-added chain, the particular role of firms in the value chain in Mexico and the achievements and limitations of governmental policies as tools to facilitate the entrance of MNCs' subsidiaries and to create the conditions for the entrance and scaling up of local firms in the value chain. We found that geopolitical factors were important, in particular NAFTA, but these advantages are only part of explanation for the insertion of Mexican industry in both GVCs. In our opinion, this could not have happened without an effort of public policy at different levels to attain this goal on the part of the Mexican government. Nevertheless, there is a notorious unbalance between efforts to secure investment from foreign firms and certification and long-term financing initiatives. In our view, the latter has not been properly addressed and it is a major problem for the scaling up of local firms in the value chain.

Abstract (sommario):
With five years remaining to reach the year 2030, only 17% of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been achieved. Due to Multinational Enterprises’ (MNEs) considerable influence on the global economy and their impact on global sustainability, it is important to examine how MNEs contribute to the SDG agenda. Available literature in this domain acknowledges a lack of knowledge about the extent to which MNEs implement SDGs in their operations. To fill this gap, we juxtapose academic and practice literature to uncover actual engagements and disengagements of MNEs with SDGs. We synthesize studies from the past eight years to evaluate the state of the field and propose a research agenda. Academic work typically identifies the SDGs MNEs engage with, while practitioner literature highlights challenges and opportunities. Our review of 168 studies finds that MNEs in emerging markets, developed markets and the global context engage with SDGs 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 12, 13, 16, and 17. We also find that MNEs disengage with SDGs 5, 8, 10, 12, 13, and 16 across all contexts. Thus, we identify 9 key research areas critical for strengthening theoretical understanding and offering practical guidance for MNEs and policymakers in advancing global sustainability.

Rapid detection of mutans streptococci by substrate specific binding of automutanolysin : Final report. Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University, 2016. https://doi.org/10.58837/chula.res.2016.19.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Chair-side rapid detection of mutans streptococci is an important aid to clinical dental caries risk assessment. Rapid Streptococcus mutans detection tools are available on the market but there are a small number. Automutanolysin (Aml) is a peptidoglycan hydrolase whose cell wall-binding domain (CWBD) has substrate-specificity towards mutans streptococci. This study aims to develop a rapid detection assay using CWBD conjugated with horseradish peroxidase (HRP). However, the recombinant protein was as insoluble form. Therefore, magnetic nanoparticles were used as an alternative reporter to conjugate with CWBD (CWBD-conjugated MNPs). Magnetic nanoparticles were grafted with poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) providing active carboxyl groups for conjugation with CWBD of Aml. To determine binding ability and specificity of CWBD-conjugated MNPs against mutans streptococci and Streptococcus sanguinis and Streptococcus salivarius, the composite particles were mixed with single-species bacterial solution and then isolated with external magnet. The isolated CWBD-conjugated MNPs were then re-suspended in phosphate buffer saline. Bacteria-bound CWBD-conjugated MNPs were separated from unbound one by vacuum filtration through a 0.8 µm nitrocellulose filter membrane. There was a linear relationship between the intensity of colored spots of filtered-MNPs on a membrane and the number of mutans streptococci (range 10²-10⁷ CFU/ml) but not with other two streptococci. Addition of 3,3’,5,5’-Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) enhance a signal of MNPs and thus improve the detection limit. For clinical application, the detection ability against mutans streptococci in mixed culture and also patient’s saliva will be further examined.
