La maladie du chancre du noyer cendré, causée par le Sirococcus clavigignenti-juglandacearum, affecte principalement le noyer cendré, Juglans cinerea, bien que le noyer noir, Juglans nigra, et les noyers hybrides puissent en être atteints. La maladie est présente dans plusieurs États américains ainsi qu'en Ontario et au Québec. Au Québec, elle a été rapportée pour la première fois en 1990, dans la région de Fort-Coulonge, en Outaouais. Depuis, de nouveaux foyers d'infection ont été notés en forêt naturelle ainsi que dans une plantation. En 1995, elle a été observée pour la première fois sur des semis de noyer dans deux pépinières forestières québécoises. Cette détection constitue le premier cas documenté de la maladie sur des semis de noyer cendré et de noyer noir dans des pépinières forestières.

Nous examinons l’impact du dégagement et des caractéristiques des noyers cendrés, y compris le phénotype d’écorce, sur leur santé. Sur deux sites au Québec, des noyers ont été mis en lumière par détourage de cime. Nous analysons aussi les caractéristiques de noyers recueillies par un collaborateur en Montérégie en lien avec leur santé. Il n’a pas été démontré que ce dégagement améliorait la santé des noyers. Cependant, le site, la croissance en diamètre avant le dégagement et le prélèvement de rameaux sur certains noyers ont eu un impact significatif sur certaines variables de santé. Concernant les noyers cendrés de la Montérégie, les dommages au tronc et la résistance potentielle au chancre causé par l’Ophiognomonia clavigignenti-juglandacearum sont influencés de façon significative par l’étage auquel ils appartiennent, une position supérieure garantissant une meilleure santé. La mort en cime des noyers de phénotype à écorce foncée et rugueuse est significativement moindre que celle des noyers à écorce lisse. La vigueur des noyers est supérieure chez les arbres présentant une plus grande croissance annuelle en surface terrière. Cette croissance annuelle est significativement plus élevée chez les noyers des étages supérieurs et chez les noyers cendrés à écorce rugueuse.

In the sixteenth century, chronic wars and a high concentration of towns made the Low Countries one of Europe's prime laboratories for innovations in military architecture and urbanism. The 1553 inspection tour of the region by engineers Giovanni Maria Olgiati and Sebastian van Noyen marked the assimilation of “Italian-style” fortifications into Netherlandish practice and the transition there from defenses with bastions to proper bastioned systems. Olgiati and Van Noyen's joint tour is well documented through a dozen design drawings now held at the Vatican Library, Turin's Archivio di Stato, and Madrid's Palacio Real, as well as a closely related atlas in Turin and complementary archival records. As Pieter Martens discusses in Planning Bastions: Olgiati and Van Noyen in the Low Countries in 1553, these materials, including many hitherto unknown plans, provide new insights into the design process, offer a unique panorama of the Low Countries' border defenses at this critical moment, and illuminate the genesis and spread of bastioned fortifications in Europe.

Le noyer cendré (Juglans cinerea) est considéré depuis 2005 en voie de disparition au Canada; un chancre, causé par le champignon Ophiognomonia clavigignenti-juglandacearum, est la principale cause du statut précaire de l’espèce. Cette maladie, qui semble avoir été introduite en Amérique du Nord, a été initialement rapportée en 1967 au Wisconsin. Au Canada, c’est au Québec qu’on l’observe en premier en 1990. Les symptômes se présentent sous forme de mort en cime et, très souvent, de chancres au tronc qui finissent presque toujours par tuer les arbres de tous âges. Nous décrivons entre autres certains de nos travaux qui recherchaient une meilleure compréhension de cette maladie, mais surtout qui visaient à repérer des arbres potentiellement résistants au chancre, à les multiplier et à évaluer leur résistance, et finalement à les protéger en stimulant leur vigueur par des travaux de dégagement. Nous avons pu montrer, par exemple, qu’à la suite d’inoculations artificielles en serre, quelques noyers cendrés montraient une certaine résistance au chancre, et qu’ils se défendaient en compartimentant les tissus envahis par l’agent pathogène. Ces individus potentiellement résistants constitueraient ainsi une source unique de matériel pour rétablir l’espèce sur certains sites.

L’élevage rend de nombreux services dans les territoires dans lesquels il est implanté et il est intéressant de pouvoir les appréhender dans leur globalité. L’objectif de cette étude est de réaliser une qualification du bouquet de services rendus par les systèmes de production de foie gras agroforestiers en prenant comme exemple l’association oies / noyers en Périgord. Le cadre conceptuel utilisé a été adapté de Ryschawy et al (2015). Les données proviennent 1) de mesures biologiques (croissance des arbres ou production de fruit, comportement des animaux, biodiversité) ou pédologiques (fertilité des sols) réalisées sur des oies adultes élevées sur des parcours contenant des noyers âgés de 7 à 11 ans et 2) des données de la littérature pour les autres dimensions. Notre analyse montre que l’élevage des oies pour la production de foie gras sur des parcours implantés de noyers est à bénéfices réciproques puisque l’ombre apportée par les noyers est très appréciée des animaux, et que les déjections des oies fertilisent les arbres ce qui augmente leur croissance et leur production de fruits sans altérer leur qualité sanitaire. Cette association rend des services i) d’approvisionnement par la fourniture en quantité relative modérée de foie gras, de viande d’oie, de bois de noyers, de noix et de coproduits (duvets et graisse d’oie, coques et brou de noix) ; ii) de préservation de la qualité environnementale en valorisants des coproduits dans l’alimentation des animaux (77 t/an) et en préservant la fertilité du sol ; iii) patrimoniaux et de qualité de vie par le biais de produits labellisés et à haute valeur ajoutée (AOC Noix du Périgord, marque Oie du Périgord) et le maintien du patrimoine culturel et gastronomique; et iv) de vitalité territoriale par la création d’emplois et la contribution à l’agrotourisme. Il a aussi des externalités négatives (impacts environnementaux, acceptabilité sociale du gavage et risques sanitaires). Ce travail permet de montrer que les bénéfices de l’association oies/noyers sont beaucoup plus larges que les intérêts techniques et économiques qui les ont justifiés.

The family Encyrtidae is represented by two subfamilies, Encyrtinae and Tetracneminae, and currently includes over 460 genera and nearly 3,800 described species (Noyes, 2003). All Tetracneminae and the majority of Encyrtinae are reported as parasitoids of mealybugs, whereas some encyrtines are associated with a number of other arthropod hosts (Noyes, 2003; Simutnik & Trjapitzin, 2008).

Il est communément admis que les écoulements dans les aquifères karstiques sont particulièrement concentrés dans les conduits et les fractures principaux. Dans ce travail, on cherche à décrire le comportement du flux à différentes échelles. A l'échelle locale, on considère une modélisation des écoulements en milieu continu. A cela s'ajoute à l'échelle régionale l'inclusion de drains comme éléments discrets (approche hybride). Nous avons recours pour ceci à l'utilisation d'un modèle d'écoulement défini par des équations aux dérivées partielles qui décrivent l'écoulement dans un milieu à double-porosité. La solution analytique de ce modèle nous permet d'étudier les phases de transition des flux selon une condition à la limite de type charge imposée. Ceci correspond à une perturbation hydraulique tel qu'un puits maintenu à charge constante. Afin d'inclure des conditions aux limites spécifiques (par exemple une limite imperméable) et une géométrie de domaine irrégulière, nous développons et employons un modèle numérique basée sur la méthode des éléments intégrales de frontière. Ceci permet de mettre en oeuvre l'approche hybride (milieu continu et discret) dans laquelle nous considérons les intersections entre conduits verticaux et horizontaux. Ce type de modélisation permet ainsi de considérer une échelle plus importante qu'un modèle continu seul. Par ailleurs, un modèle expérimental de laboratoire est conçu et réalisé afin d'étudier expérimentalement les phases de transition du flux issu de milieux hétérogènes. Cette approche est complémentaire de celle développée à l'aide de la solution analytique et du modèle numérique. Enfin, nous proposons le développement et les essais préliminaires d'un nouvel instrument de mesure. Il s'agit d'une sonde autonome qui a pour objectif de cartographier les conduits noyés dans les aquifères karstiques. Ainsi la géométrie des drains discrets pourra être représentée de façon plus réaliste dans le modèle numérique hybride. Les conclusions principales de ce travail sont les suivantes : à l'échelle locale et régionale, les phases de transition du flux dépendent des propriétés hydrauliques du milieu. La solution numérique permet d'étudier l'influence des géométries de domaine et de conditions aux limites complexes. Le modèle expérimental permet de reproduire qualitativement les phases de transition du flux analysées théoriquement. Enfin, la sonde permet de cartographier son parcours dans des conditions expérimentales contrôlées. Ces nouvelles méthodes contribuent à la caractérisation de l'hydrodynamique dans les aquifères karstiques.

L'analyse architecturale et l'analyse statistique de la morphologie des pousses annuelles ont permis de caracteriser les modes de croissance (preformation, neoformation et polycyclisme) et de ramification des noyers au cours de leur developpement. Les noyers etudies sont juglans regia, juglans nigra et de deux de leurs hybrides interspecifiques, juglans major 209 juglans regia et juglans nigra 23 juglans regia. Au cours du developpement des noyers, l'evolution des valeurs des parametres de croissance et de ramification des pousses annuelles s'effectue de maniere precise selon des gradients morphogenetiques connus lies a la position architecturale et a l'ontogenie des arbres. Les variations morphologiques interspecifiques reposent principalement sur la repartition des rameaux sur les pousses annuelles vegetatives et sur la direction de croissance des branches sur le jeune arbre. Elles sont dues a la structure des modules et au moment d'expression de la reiteration immediate, processus determinant l'edification de la cime, sur l'arbre adulte. Les facteurs du milieu modifient de maniere quantitative les etapes de differenciation morphologiques specifiques. L'ensemble des resultats permet de mettre en evidence des criteres morphologiques susceptibles d'etre sous controle genetique et pertinents en amelioration et selection d'arbres. La connaissance de l'evolution de la morphologie des pousses annuelles au cours du developpement des arbres est un element fondamental pour aborder le determinisme physiologique de l'architecture de l'arbre.

La maitrise du comportement des roulements a billes operant noyes a de tres grandes vitesses de rotation est un des objectifs des concepteurs des turbopompes equipant l'etage cryogenique des lanceurs spatiaux. Ainsi, dans le cadre d'un programme de recherche associant l'agence francaise de l'espace (cnes), la societe europeenne de propulsion (sep) et le centre national de la recherche scientifique (cnrs), une installation d'essais destinee a l'etude du comportement hydraulique des roulements noyes a ete mise en place, qualifiee et exploitee. Ce banc est constitue d'une boucle assurant la circulation d'eau au travers de deux roulements de grande echelle operant soit bague interieure et cage en rotation, soit bagues interieure et exterieure contrarotatives, cage maintenue fixe. Il autorise la mesure des pressions, des vitesses par velocimetrie laser dans le roulement - ou en amont et en aval - et la conduite d'experiences de visualisation. Les essais ont vise a determiner, d'une part les dissipations associees a la circulation du fluide (perte de charge) et a sa mise en rotation (couple) et, d'autre part, les caracteristiques globales (debits partiels) ou locales (champ des vitesses) de l'irrigation des espaces confines. Ainsi, on a montre que la rotation affecte peu la perte de charge alors que la presence du debit axial accroit considerablement le couple echange entre le fluide et le roulement. En outre, on a mis en evidence que, lorsque les gradients de pression dus a la rotation predominent devant ceux associes a l'ecoulement axial seul, ils conduisent a une grande modification, par rapport a la situation sans rotation, de la distribution des debits partiels dans les espaces confines. Les resultats adimensionnels sont correles aux nombres sans dimension caracteristiques de l'ecoulement et extrapoles aux conditions de fonctionnement cryogeniques du roulement de reference. Ils sont en bon accord avec les previsions analytiques ou numeriques realisees par le passe.

La connaissance de critères morphologiques susceptibles d'être sous contrôle génétique est essentiel en amélioration et sélection des arbres. Les caractèristiques morphologiques des pousses annuelles évoluent de manière précise et ordonnée en fonction de la position architecturale et au cours de l'ontogènie des arbres. Ces résultats peuvent être la base d'une meilleur connaissance des bases physiologiques de l'architecture de l'arbre.

John Humphrey Noyes was the founder of the Oneida Community, one of the most successful utopian ventures in nineteenth-century America. Early in his life, Noyes was a deep religious thinker, but he founded Oneida as an ideal society based on extending the family unit, and not as a church. Noyes's social theories eventually overwhelmed his former religious concentration. The purpose of this thesis is to locate in Noyes's religiously-oriented youth the sources of his social interests. Few scholars have studied in depth the childhood and young manhood of John Humphrey Noyes, but that is where the roots of his social theories are to be found. Noyes did write his religious autobiography, but completely passed over his formative years. Further, he never wrote the analysis of his social ideas and experiences that he had once promised. However, many of his early letters and journals have been compiled and edited by his relatives; and his immediate family left reminiscences of his youth. These works provide most of the available information on the childhood of Noyes. Large gaps in his history do exist, however. Therefore, the modern psychological theories of Erik Erikson are used to illuminate the otherwise shadowy areas of Noyes's early life.

Thesis (D.M.A.)--Boston University<br>Noye's Fludde is an unusual intergenerational opera by Benjamin Britten. Professional adults and amateur children together sing and play this adaptation of the Chester Mystery Play. The audience participates by singing three hymns with the cast. The resulting community experience is a lovable work for children and also a well-crafted work of twentieth century music. Passacaglia, polytonality, dodecaphony, and the influence of Japanese Noh drama and Balinese gamelan all link this work to the rest of Britten's oeuvre. It is powerful a powerful tool for music education and faith formation. American performances have declined steadily since the 1970s. The score is still quite useful, but some requirements, such as the recorder section, are increasingly difficult for contemporary productions to fulfill. Because Noye's Fludde is a unique learning and faith experience, this study advocates more frequent productions by a variety of American institutions, even if adaptations are necessary. A biographical sketch of Britten is followed by a chapter introducing Noye's Fludde, including the roots of the libretto, musical influences, reception, and performance history. Chapter three provides analysis of the opera, first by examining the central role of the hymns as motivic generators for the entire work. Tonality in large and small dimensions, the influences of Britten's recent trip to Asia, and his fondness for repetitive forms (passacaglia, theme and variations, canon) are analyzed next. Chapter three concludes with a Julius Herford-style structural analysis. Britten scored flexibly, allowing local communities to adapt as needed. Chapter four addresses the hesitation that potential conductors may feel about modifying or adapting the work. By observing the score, his alterations during Noye's Fludde and similar circumstances throughout his career, and his important Aspen speech of 1964, this study demonstrates that adaptations to casting or scoring are appropriate and were expected by Britten. The closing chapters provide a practical guide to Noye's Fludde. Because of the variation in skill levels involved, the technical requirements of each vocal and instrumental part are outlined in chapter five. Chapter six offers strategies for rehearsal and teaching the opera.

La croissance et la nutrition des noyers à bois ont été étudiées en champ et en conditions contrôlées. En champ, (i)-après 4 ans d'association à la rotation blé-colza, des noyers de 6 ans ont une croissance et des teneurs foliaires en azote plus élevées (+ 16 à 49 %)que celles des noyers associés à une graminée ou sans culture intercalaire. En culture sur substrat, sous serre, la croissance, les teneurs en azote des feuilles, des tiges et des racines des noyers de 3 ans ont été fortement augmentées par l'apport d'azote. Les racines jouent un rôle important dans le stockage de l'azote (65 à 69% de l'azote accumulé). La bonne corrélation teneur foliaire en azote surfacique x indice de chrorophylle (r exposant 2=0. 72) permet d'apprécier le niveau de nutrition azotée par la mesure de l'indice de chlorophylle. Enfin, l'amélioration de l'efficience photosynthétique par la fertilisation azotée pourrait atteindre 29%. L'ensemble de ces réponses à l'azote, souligne l'intérêt d'une fertilisation azotée ou de l'association à des légumineuses dans les cultures intensives de noyers à bois.

Les tanins condensés (flavonoïdes) joueraient le rôle de précurseurs de la couleur du bois en étant dégradés en pigments rouge brun de nature phlobaphénique au cours de la formation et de la maturation du bois de coeur. L'hydrojuglone glucoside (napthoquinone sous forme glucosylée et réduite) peut être considérée comme un précurseur majeur de la couleur du bois en étant (i) totalement dégradée au cours de la formation du bois de coeur, (ii) dégradée, in vitro, en composés brun noir comparables aux produits d'oxydation natifs du bois de coeur. Ces composés seraient également en partie responsables des changements de coloration du bois qui se produisent au cours de l'étuvage<br>The principal pigments of the walnut wood were identified as being gallic and ellagic acids derivatives. This chapter looks at the containment of the boldest religious sexual experiment of the Second Great Awakening, the perfectionist community of John Humphrey Noyes. Once men and women were reborn, Noyes insisted, they were incapable of sin. Rejecting both secular and religious law, Noyes crafted a system of “complex marriage.” However, the initiation of this system came at a significant cost, a self-imposed isolation from the outside world. Once safely settled in upstate New York, Noyes and the Oneida Community forsook proselytism. A series of critics had forced this settlement. Noyes's antinomian theology, his insistence that one should follow the spirit rather than ground one's religion in scripture and reason, they said, was his fatal flaw. In addition, they insisted this sect endangered young women, threatening to seduce them into a dangerous commune. Facing heated criticism, the Oneida Community would make peace with its neighbors by publicly declaring that their door was shut to new members.

The chapter draws on Noyes’s many writings and the papers of the Oneida Community in the Syracuse University Library.

This chapter focuses on John Humphrey Noyes' frequent informal talks to Oneida residents about spiritual and social matters. It recounts how the Oneida community dubbed Noyes' teachings as “home talks” and published many of them in a book based on notes taken by residents, which were reviewed by Noyes himself for accuracy. It also cites home talks as examples of the type of teachings Oneida community members heard from their leader. The chapter describes one of Noyes' home talks, wherein he philosophized on the organization and function of families and the binding role of love in what he termed “family communism.” It covers Noyes' discussion of the need of individuals to identify their personal faults in order to correct them.

Since their discovery over a decade ago (Murcray et al., 1981; Brault and Noyes, 1983), the neutral Magnesium emission lines at 12 microns wavelength have proven to be valuable probes of the Sun's magnetic field. These infrared lines are the most Zeeman-sensitive lines observed in the solar spectrum. These lines arise in the upper photosphere, at around 400 km above the continuum. Our group at Goddard Space Flight Center has used the McMath-Pierce telescope and Fourier transform spectrometer, in combination with two cryogenic infrared postdispersers, developed at Goddard Space Flight Center and Kitt Peak National Observatory, to observe the 12.32-micron line. This program has produced an extensive study of the magnitude and structure of magnetic fields in sunspots and other active regions, as well as in quiet regions.

Biomechanical tests of soft tissues, especially those from human cadavers, are generally done after a period of postmortem storage by freezing. In some instances, specimen preparation and testing can be complex and can take place over several days, thus necessitating an additional period of frozen storage before biomechanical evaluation is completed. Studies have been done in the past, which investigated the effects of postmortem freezing on the tensile properties of ligament-bone complexes (Viidik and Lewin 1966; Noyes and Grood 1976; Dorlot 1980; Barad 1982; Nikolaou 1986; Woo, Orlando et al. 1986). It has been shown in our laboratory that careful postmortem freezing for up to three months did not significantly change the mechanical properties of the ligament midsubstance and the cyclic stress relaxation behavior and the structural properties of the ligament-bone complex, but the area of hysteresis was significantly reduced in the stored specimens for the first few cycles of cyclic stress relaxation (Woo, Orlando et al. 1986). Hence, it is important to ensure that an additional freezing and thawing cycle will not further change the tensile properties of these tissues. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of freezing and thawing twice at 20°C on the structural and viscoelastic properties of femur-medial collateral ligament-tibia complex (FMTC) in a rabbit model.

The article reveals the peculiarities of folk stories and songs about some Buryat usurers who lived in the Aginsky steppes of Zabaikalye in the second half of the 19th — first quarter of the 20th centuries, recorded by the Buryat chronicler Dashi Bubeev from the old residents of that time. A particular scientific interest lies in the fact that a previously unknown handwritten source in the old Mongolian script Brief historical notes, stories and songs about the Buryat usurers and noyons (Burayad ulus-yin urda-yin bayad noyad tuqai üge-nüüd ba daγun-uud-un tobči tedüi teüke amui) kept in the Mongolian fund of the Center of Oriental Manuscripts and xylographs of the Institute for Mongolian, Buddhist and Tibetan studies is introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. In addition to this manuscript, the Mongolian fund contains about thirty other works by the chronicler D. Bubeev. This manuscript is an original monument of Buryat literature and folklore in Old Mongolian script with elements of the genre of travelogue.

This paper attacks the problem of drug particles modeling in their delivery process for better predictions of solubility and absorption rate. Most of the current models treat the particles to be spheres which may not be accurate. The drug particles formed by grinding and milling are usually not spheres but are irregular or spindles in shape. As such, in this paper modeling of drug particles as cylinders is proposed to rigorously study the impact on its solubility. Along the same line, we also delve into the effect on solubility of changing the aspect ratio of a cylindrical drug particle having a constant mass as well as the diffusion coefficient of the solute which dominates the control on the kinetics of drug release. Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulation is employed to calculate the diffusion coefficient of a given particle using one of Einstein’s fluctuation-dissipation equations that relates transport properties to time. The MD approach makes it possible to deal with parameters that are too difficult to be physically measured in a human body. The solubility analysis of a cylindrical drug particle is done using the Noyes-Whitney equation. The rates of change of radius and of mass are analyzed graphically for drug particles of different weights and sizes. Finally the solubility of a sphere versus that of a cylinder for the same mass is investigated. The data reveal that with the same given mass, the solubility of a spherical particle is less than that of the cylindrical shape. As to the effect of the diffusion coefficient, δ on the solubility of a particle, it is found that the increase in δ for a particle with fixed mass increases its solubility. However, the solubility decreases while δ is increased for a particle with fixed radius.

In September 2015, world leaders agreed on a new sustainable development agenda based on a set of global goals aimed at eradicating poverty, ensuring planet protection and guaranteeing prosperity for future generations (Stafford-Smith et al., 2017). Since then, the education sector has played a fundamental role, not only raising awareness among young people about the importance of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) but also promoting innovative ideas around sustainability (Owens, 2017). SDGs implementation needs of business actors rethinking their understanding of economic growth, taking into consideration not only economic aspects but also social and ecological concerns (Crespo et al., 2017). Thus, the traditional paradigm based on continuous economic expansions needs to adopt a triple bottom line perspective (Slaper and Hall, 2011). In this context, it is remarkable to bring economic and business students closer to the importance of SDGs, involving them in the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development. For this purpose, a LEGO Serious Play (LSP) workshop is held to envision a more sustainable tomorrow and collectively reflect on the main challenges of our society from the business perspective (Kristiansen and Rasmussen, 2014). LSP is an unconventional methodology based on brick-building and metaphoric storytelling. It involves kinesthetic learning given that participants are asked to build metaphoric structures with Lego bricks that respond to a challenge raised by the instructor. This hands-on methodology is often accompanied by facilitated reflection, becoming a language for emotional content and promoting discussion around complex issues (Peabody and Noyes, 2017). The workshop started with an introduction to LSP for students to familiarize themselves with its dynamics. Then, a challenge related to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was raised by the instructors who accompanied students through the process of strategic thinking. The last part of the workshop was devoted to sharing ideas and reflections among participants, both regarding the designed prototypes and the potential of LSP for developing new ideas. This last phase was developed firstly within the different work groups and, after, with the broader group so that participants could receive the feedback of their fellows before presenting the prototypes to all participants. To analyze the results of this innovative education project, we conducted a survey among participants about LSP methodology, workshop dynamics and skills acquisition using a Likert scale. The results show how LSP is especially suitable to foster ideation around SDGs since it raises awareness and understanding about how these goals might be integrated into daily business initiatives. It also allows participants to significantly improve their communication and problem-solving skills. This suggests LSP methodology is suitable in higher education contexts as it allows students to reflect on complex issues through an ideation process where kinesthetic learning plays a crucial role. LSP speeds up the process of finding sustainable solutions and allows unconscious ideas to take shape in 3D. It also helps students to foster self-confidence as well as network with other students, given its socializing nature. All in all, students develop key skills for their professional development.
