The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between muscle and blood lactate concentrations during progressive exercise. Seven endurance-trained male college students performed three incremental bicycle ergometer exercise tests. The first two tests (tests I and II) were identical and consisted of 3-min stage durations with 2-min rest intervals and increased by 50-W increments until exhaustion. During these tests, blood was sampled from a hyperemized earlobe for lactate and pH measurement (and from an antecubital vein during test I), and the exercise intensities corresponding

The following parameters were analysed: running velocity, heart rate, oxygen uptake, relative oxygen uptake, pulmonary ventilation breath-by-breath, at the three points—lactate threshold (LT), onset of

Abstract (sommario):
The maximal instantaneous anaerobic power (w), as determined during a high jump off both feet on a force platform, was measured on eight subjects starting from a resting base line; a base line of steady-state cycloergometric exercise requiring 30, 50, and 70% of individual maximum O2 consumption (VO2max); and a base line of maximal and supramaximal exercise (100 and 120% of VO2max). In addition, w was also measured during the VO2 transients from rest to each of the above work loads. Blood lactate concentration ([Lab]) was determined before and 8 min after the end of each priming load. After th

Abstract (sommario):
Metabolic alkalosis induced by sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) ingestion has been shown to enhance performance during brief high-intensity exercise. The mechanisms associated with this increase in performance may include increased muscle phosphocreatine (PCr) breakdown, muscle glycogen utilization, and plasma lactate (Lac-pl) accumulation. Together, these changes would imply a shift toward a greater contribution of anaerobic energy production, but this statement has been subject to debate. In the present study, subjects ( n = 6) performed a progressive wrist flexion exercise to volitional fatigue

Abstract (sommario):
This case study examines the impact of low serum ferritin (sFe) on physiological assessment measures and performance in a young female 1500-m runner undertaking approximately 95–130 km/wk training. The study spans 4 race seasons and an Olympic Games. During this period, 25 venous blood samples were analyzed for sFe and hemoglobin (Hb); running economy, VO2max, and lactate threshold were measured on 6 occasions separated by 8–10 mo. Training was carefully monitored including 65 monitored treadmill training runs (targeting an intensity associated with the onset of blood lactate accumulation) usi

Abstract (sommario):
Detailed accounts of the training programs followed by today’s elite triathletes are lacking in the sport-science literature. This study reports on the training program of a world-class female triathlete preparing to compete in the London 2012 Olympic Games. Over 50 wk, she performed 796 sessions (303 swim, 194 bike, 254 run, 45 strength training), ie, 16 ± 4 sessions/wk (mean ± SD). Swim, bike, and run training volumes were, respectively, 1230 km (25 ± 8 km/wk), 427 h (9 ± 3 h/wk), and 250 h (5 ± 2 h/wk). Training tasks were categorized and prescribed based on heart-rate values and/or speeds

Abstract (sommario):
Age-related fitness declines in athletes can be due to both aging and detraining. Very little is known about the physiological and performance decline of professional cyclists after retirement from competition. To gain some insight into the aging and detraining process of elite cyclists, 5-time Tour de France winner and Olympic Champion Miguel Indurain performed a progressive cycle-ergometer test to exhaustion 14 y after retirement from professional cycling (age 46 y, body mass 92.2 kg). His maximal values were oxygen uptake 5.29 L/min (57.4 mL · kg−1 · min−1), aerobic power output 450 W (4.88

The study aimed to assess the prognostic role of lactate concentration (LC) in patients with AMI during one year of follow-up. 145 consecutive patients admitted due to AMI were enrolled. The data on the frequency of endpoint occurrence (defined as I, death; II, heart failure (HF); and III, recurrent myocardial infarction (re-MI)) were collected. The patients were divided into group A (LC below the cut-off value) and group B (LC above the cut-off value) for the endpoints according to receiver o

O objetivo principal do

Thirteen male distance runners completed two 20-minute treadmill runs at speeds corresponding to 95% of onset of blood lactate accumulation. Leg and head accelerations were collected for 20 s every fourth minute. Rating of perceived exertion (RPE) scores were recorded during the third and last minute of each run. RPE responses increased (P < .001) from the start (11.8 ± 0.9, moderate intensity) of the first run to the end (17.7 ± 1.5, very hard) of the sec

The endocrine effects of pregnancy cause striking changes in maternal metabolism, cardiovascular regulation, acid-base balance, and thermoregulation at rest and during standard submaximal exercise. The apparent purpose of these changes is to accommodate fetal needs in addition to those of the exercising woman. A significant body of evidence supports the hypothesis that healthy women can perform acute exercise of moderate intensity and duration without jeopardizing fetal well-being. Compiled studies also suggest that maximal oxygen uptake ([Formula: see text], L∙min−1) and the work rate at the
