Testo completoThe research analyzes cultural landscape aspects of transhumance routes with the aim to highlight the values set down by the local communities in the processes of territorialization and historical memory. The landscape of transhumance, as today perceived, has been assumed in the research as the result of the transformation of the territory, becoming a means in the definition of new imaginaries and new territorialization paths, including those driven by tourism. The research includes two approaches: theoretic and applicative; the first defines a method of geographical study to analyze transhumance routes and pertinent objects: climate and vegetation gradients, socio-spatial dynamics, type of mobility; the second part proposes a 3d virtual reconstruction of the transhumance landscape for slow tourism purposes. The area investigated is located in Central-Southern Italy, in a context influenced by particular forms of spatial organization and social practices based on specific cultural identities. The field research is focused in the area of “Alto Molise”, a territory extremely interested by landscape conservation projects, one of them is the "Collemeluccio-Montedimezzo" UNESCO MaB reserve (Man and Biosphere). The analysis concerned the study of the different geographical factors of the trashumance practice, from relief and climate to territorial infrastructures, and the landscape output of the transhumance network management. After a theoretical part, the second part of the thesis deals with a historical-geographical analysis and focuses on the transhumance system referred to the territory examined, the third part of the thesis is dedicated to the enhancement of the transhumance landscape through virtual rendering tools. The most relevant topics concern: the administrative organization of the territory managed by the Dogana della Mena delle pecore di Puglia; the spatial practices evaluated in terms of flow-rest-stop of the flocks; the seasonal migrations of the “locati”; the land use and the conflicts between agriculture and sheep breeding. The research seeks to bring out a possible interpretative key to the cultural landscape of transhumance that could become a base for its enhancement as a symbolic landscape of Molise. The landscape of transhumance, assumed in the research as the result of the transformation of the territory, then becomes a means for the definition of new imaginaries which are based on the link between potential tourism demand, increasingly interested in the search for genius loci, and the presence of cultural heritage strongly connected to transhumance history. The model of reconstruction of the transhumance landscape, in the last part of the research, has also been thought of as an instrument for promoting tourism in the MaB area, which could enrich the offer of this territory increasing the knowledge of the transhumance cultural landscape, starting from current trails. The use of virtual landscape reconstruction, based on accurate geo-historical research, could improve the recognition of these ancient routes and promote the enhancement of the cultural landscape of transhumance.

Testo completoThis study aims to trace the roots of the notion of “urban landscape" within the debate on the protection of historic citiesduring the second half of the 20th century. The analysis is carried out through a comparison between Italy and France, whose legal systems are characterized by the public protection of cultural heritage. The analysis covers three main areas: the genealogy of the concept of urban landscape, its variations, and its relation with the theory of the historic centre; the development of legislation and its connection with the cultural debate; the outcomes in urban planning practice. To analyse the theoretical debate on urban landscape the main sources include the most important Italian and French professional periodicals. Urban planning outcomes are analyzed through two case studies on Turin and Lyon, developed by archive research. Although the French and Italian discourses of the post world war II decades have been particularly interesting for the cultural elaboration about preservation and promotion of urban heritage, both Italian and Frenchnotions of urban landscape didn’t succeed in reaching substantial outcomes in term of legislation. The preservation and promotion of urban landscape are still open questions, and the concept of urban landscape as part of cultural heritage is still to be theorized, at least on a legislative level. This study attempts to contribute to this conceptualization

Testo completoThe thesis deals with the study of soils as a target of human-induced landscape changes in a typical mountainous area, in the Dolomites region (Italy). A general soil survey allowed identification of different landform units in terraced soil systems. Representative soil profiles under different vegetation cover (meadows, forest and agricultural land) were opened and sampled for routine analyses. Selectde soil and environmental factors both chemical and bio-chemical allowed assessment of the consistent effects of land use change on soils and soilscapes. Different evolutionary stages were recorded in the changing terraced landscape: • little degradation under permanent meadow; • moderate degradation under forest; • high degradation under abandoned forest. Dynamic soil properties, and the processes involved, proved greatly useful to understand environmental transformation mechanism and to assess possible consequences of land abandonment on soils and the whole environment.

Testo completoThis work intends to define the ancient landscape in the Po Valley area in early Middle Age with a look at the ancient Roman period up to the advanced Middle Age, through archaeobotanical investigations. In total, 13 archaeological sites were examined, 6 of which of a settlement type, and 7 of a naturalistic type located in Emilia Romagna, southern Lombardy and Veneto. The analysis, processing and interpretation of the data obtained from the archaeobotanical investigations, were carried out at the Palynology – Archaeo - Environmental Laboratory of C.AA. "G. Nicoli" srl, San Giovanni in Persiceto (Bologna). The reconstruction of landscape, is based on the data from 102 palynological study samples and from the investigations on 518 wood macroremains found in the buried ancient woods sites. The emerging data from the archaeobotanical investigations were compared with the available archaeological results and, for each site, some Vegetational Zones were identified to describe the environmental evolution through main homogeneous series. It was possible to take over the reconstruction of events that shaped the landscape of the Po Valley, the progressive succession of climatic and historical phases and the local human choices, made by local communities, aimed to increase and diversify primary products and their storage. An innovative aspect of this work is the comparison of archaeobotanical data referred to anthropic contexts with those obtained from "off-site" research areas, such as woods and wetlands far from human action, which complete and define the image of the ancient landscape, allowing a clear vision on the evolution of the North Italy Po plain area over the centuries.

Testo completoThe dissertation, developed along the lines of research of UNESCO Chair in “Mediterranean Cultural Landscapes and Communities of Knowledge” of the University of Basilicata (UniBas), aims to investigate the “Landscape Generative Narrative” as a tool capable of increase knowledge of the territory and its communities, in order to promote the enhancement of its cultural heritage and the sustainable development of the landscape and its inhabitants. The study was conducted through a multidisciplinary approach on three lines of research: the landscape, the cinematographic language, the anthropology of the sea. The first part of the contribution proposes a reflective analysis on the notion of landscape, comparing it with the main references of the contemporary anthropological debate. The second part presents the research methodology used, with a sharing of the investigation method developed within the WUC Course - Workshop of UNESCO Chair, format proposed by the UNESCO Chair of the University of Basilicata, which aims to develop the tools of audiovisual narration , and an analysis of the history and development of visual anthropology, with an in-depth study of some recent experiences such as the works of the SEL - Sensory Ethnography Lab of Harvard University, an interdisciplinary centre that creates docu-films that combine aesthetics and ethnography. The third part presents the ethnographic work on the hamlet of Torre Canne: starting from the reflection on the cultural dimension of maritime communities, the fieldwork experience connects these aspects to those inherent in the form of the sensory and subjective restitution of the immersive experience constituted by perceiving, looking and living a maritime space like that of the village of Torre Canne. The fourth part of the work illustrates the consequences of this dense investigation on the territory, consisting in the creation of a museum and memorial space inside the rooms located in the lighthouse which, as a symbolic element of the coastal landscape of the hamlet, assumes the role of a living artefact , dynamic, in constant relationship with the fishing community, and which thanks to it regenerates its identity and the sense of belonging to the territory.

MALANDRA, FRANCESCO. "Land use/cover shifts and wildfires as drivers of mountain forest landscape dynamics in the Apennines (Italy)". Doctoral thesis, Università Politecnica delle Marche, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/11566/274504.
Testo completoThis research aimed to study landscape dynamics along the Italian peninsula, due to land use/cover shifts and recent wildfires, within the contest of climate change. Land use changes were mainly focused on the mountain areas along the whole Apennines range, whereas the landscape effects of two recent and extreme fire seasons were assessed along the Italian peninsula and the two major islands (Sardinia and Sicily). Firstly, we considered a meta-analysis an appropriate and preliminary tool for summarizing general patterns and heterogeneous findings from several case-studies over a large geographic area, since land-use science usually adopts the case-study approach to investigate landscape changes. Out of 51 published articles and different databases that referred to 57 case-studies, we explored heterogeneous data sets and standardized the processing methods to obtain a new set of homogeneous data for a comparative landscape change analysis. Secondly, we used a replicate landscape approach and a systematic sampling design for quantifying changes at regional scale. We selected 10 representative sites located along the Apennines and investigated land-cover changes and landscape configurational shifts comparing different slope aspects (North-East vs South-West slopes) and altitudinal zones (low elevation vs high elevation) and assessing the main drivers of the non-forest/forest dynamics. Recent changes of land use/cover and climate in the Mediterranean basin altered historical fire regimes and led to an increase of the frequency, area and severity of wildfires. In the last chapter, we created a dataset of large wildfires (>100 ha) using remote sensing techniques and adopting specific selection criteria in order to study the occurrence, the severity and the landscape effects of two major forest fire seasons (2007 and 2017) in peninsular Italy and Sicily and Sardinia islands. Preliminary results offer a comparative picture of large fire features in dry years which are expected to occur more frequently in a climate change scenario.

Testo completoThe stone’s landscape of western Lessinia In the last few years, topics related to the mountain and its environment have seen a renewed interest after years of neglect. The concept of mountain, the establishment of parks and protected areas, the protection and conservation of fragile ecosystems, the management of marginal areas with the activity of the mountain communities are just some of the fields that are now being studied in several disciplines as well as economic and political confrontation. Among the themes, that are mainly directing the national and international scientific community, are emerging the cultural identity, some landscape contexts and the peculiar territories layout that for centuries have held in equilibrium a particularly fragile hydro-geological environment. The input that led to investigate the stone’s landscape was certainly the incessant and widespread emphasis on the problematic nature of the landscape, broadly conceived, at different scales. Oversized interventions, planning not appropriated to the context, overbuilding and overcrowding of stereotyped building have triggered a disintegration of landscape areas a time homogeneous, and now reduced to"soulless" inform assemblies. As a consequence there is now a strong need to analyze, know, understand and work for a new awareness of the values of harmony of the landscape intended as an unrepeatable whole, completely different from the others, as it is a secular product of the human-environment interaction. Such attitude is far from repeating the mistakes of the past and more specifically it aims to defend, govern and enhance areas of acknowledged amenity value, areas too often forgotten. The renewed research for a more correct relationship between the environment and the communities has produced an interest in those "lost landscapes", evidences of values nearly always in contrast to those proposed by the lifestyles of today's world, but not yet protagonists of a shared collective memory. The research aimed to focus on specific character of the landscape, which marked the area not only with its physical elements but also with many cultural aspects, starting from the language. The unifying and identifying element is the stone of Prun, a resource that people were able to use in many different social and economic fields. It is a landscape that still today in its forms and uses reflects traditional ways of life, though suffering some cases of abandonment and degradation. The path taken in the study of the stone’s landscape started from the area of production of the lithoid material. The quarry in fact, turns out to be not just a simple place of extraction of material, but it becomes an intrinsic part of a landscape (yesterday, with quarries in tunnel; today, with quarries in open air), due to the gashes that stand out on the surface slopes. The stone, according to the size of plates, the tone of colours, the use of segments, characterises all the constructive components on the bases of interest / use / purpose, and therefore these products have been divided into building, social, productive, cultural and devotion elements, pointing out the historical, cultural, geographical, economic and human aspects. The last part of the research considers the stone as cultural landscape and through the close examination of the legislative measures it attempts to verify a possible protection, conservation and recovery, including the description of some specific cases. The resource, called stone of Prun, is extracted in three municipalities (Sant'Anna d'Alfaedo, Negrar and Fumane) but its distribution expands over a vast range that tends to grow even on an international scale thanks to the ability of exploiting the material with modern technology. The evolution of the landscape through the demographic, settlement, economic and social changes was inquired on numerous local references, but the survey of the existing literature was accompanied by numerous field trips, in order to search elements capable to make understand the diversity of uses in the uniformity of the material. In the process of research it is essential to explore the studied area, meet and communicate with people who daily live immersed in this landscape as they can convey the importance of the stone, witness of identity rooted values that are still defended.

Testo completoThe research topic is the possibility of investigating the representation of the landscape from the point of view of the architect, who turns his attention not only to the architectural artefact, but to the environmental contexts in which the architectural artefacts are inserted. The research aims to explore the representation of the landscape through theoretical contents, methodologies and experiments that involve the information systems in use nowadays, in order to understand how exhaustive they in reading and representation of the landscape, highlighting the unresolved problems, the innovative aspects and the potential. The goal is to understand how these systems manage to link the role of Information to the centrality of Representation. If information, understood as a complex of numerical, textual and graphic data, is the fulcrum on which these systems are based, the aim is to understand how it is translated into the graphic, expressive and communicative language of the Representation. Experiments in the Geographic Information System and Information Modeling environment are managed in order to understand how the methodological and technical aspects of individual information systems can be used for the analysis and knowledge of the contexts in which we live. Map representations and three-dimensional models with their information attributes in the Geographic Information System environment deal with the anthropogeographic scale, investigating the relationship between physical and anthropogenic factors, landscape components and vegetation systems. Three-dimensional models, together with the information system, in the Information Modeling environment, on the other hand, deal with individual plant architectures. The theme of knowledge is central in research that deals with contexts, which can be subject to management, protection, conservation, requalification, enhancement.
