Abstract (sommario):
Skibbrud & frelse.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
This study was to investigate the endemic birds, local knowledge and the conservation efforts on the bird species. The study was conducted in the period from February 2007 to May 2008. Methods used including observation, interviews, documentation, description and literature review. The results showed that there were 11 spesies of endemic birds occured in Soaib village: Cassowary (Casuarius unappendiculatus), Yellow-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita), two species of Megapodes; (Aypepodius arfakianus) and (Megapodius freycinet), Papuan Hornbill (Rhyticeros plicatus), Victoria Crowned-pigeon (Goura victoria), Palm Cockatoo (Prombosciger atterimus), Parrot (Psittrichas fulgidus), Papuan crow (Cracticus cassicus) Bird of Paradise (Paradiseae sp). Local people determined the forest in three different types; primary forest, buffer zone between primary and secondary forest and secondary forest. Primary forest was being the habitat for 11 endemic birds. These birds were hunted by local people for meat consumption and cultural purposes excepted the Papuan hornbill (Rhyticeros plicatus) and Papuan crow (Cracticus cassicus). Bird of Paradise (Paradiseae sp), and yellow-crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita) were captured to be sold in the market. This was happened because of lack information and education about the role of the birds in forest ecosystem. Key words: Traditional conservation, endemic birds, Soaib village, Jayapura

Recently, the population of the lesser bird of paradise (Paradisaea minor Shaw, 1809) has been decreasing due to illegal hunting, illegal trading, and habitat destruction. Meanwhile, ex situ conservation efforts of this bird are lacked and very low in the success of breeding. The aims of this research were to identify and analyze the component that determines the successful ex situ conservation of the lesser bird of paradise. The study was conducted from March until May 2016 in the TMII Bird Park, Mega Bird and Orchid Farm (MBOF), Ragunan Zoo, Bandung Zoo, and Al Wabra Wildlife Preservation (AWWP) in Qatar. Data
included an internal and external biological aspect of species, captive breeding technique, and social aspect, and were analyzed by Principle Component Analysis (PCA). The statistical analysis resulted that there were five determinant factors of successful ex situ conservation of lesser bird of paradise which the first determinant factors were maturity, diet, and ability of animal keeper.

In their recent commentary Bess and Paradise1 impugn the recommendations of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Development Conference on Early Identification of Hearing Impairment in Infants and Young Children (March 1-3, 1993) for universal infant hearing screening. Bess and Paradise challenge the validity and predictive value of the recommended two-sequence screening procedure, evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAE), and auditory brainstem response (ABR). Although they confirm that EOAE and ABR testing is highly sensitive, they contend that the specificity and positive predictive value of these procedures are problematic.

We describe the courtship behavior of the Paradise Flying Snake, Chrysopelea paradisi, from a series of images taken near Sandakan, eastern Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia. During the episode observed, four males moved together with a female in various states of entanglement, traveling at ground level and into a series of bushes. The observations took place over the course of a 30-min period until the snakes were lost to view. Our report is the first direct observation of mating behavior in C. paradisi in the wild and provides another rare glimpse of the multi-male courtship in Southeast Asian colubrids.

Abstract (sommario):
This article discusses the representation of AIDS in Guibert's posthumously published novel Le Paradis (Paradise). The novel is situated in relation to Guibert's better known previous AIDS writings. The article proposes that Guibert's AIDS works fall in to three related categories: writings about other peoples' AIDS; autobiographical writings about AIDS, and, in the third, terminal stage in which Le Paradis fits, writing (about) AIDS. As such the article suggests that Le Paradis manages to reflect and communicate some of the trauma of living with AIDS by specifically trying not to write about it. The article raises issues related to constructions of sexualized and AIDS identities in fiction, and presents the novel as a form which represents a loss of self. The novel, it is argued, becomes a self-mourning for a healthy past which is memorialized in a fictional present, itself always-already haunted by the nostalgia for a lost future.

Abstract (sommario):
According to Alvar Aalto, raising the quality of life did not lie in technical and economic capabilities but in the creative work of architects, whose “houses are built where people can lead happy lives,” and only reachable “by concentrating on human happiness.” This search for paradise, magnificently expressed by the Finnish architect, has guided countless projects in modern architecture. The house, the place of home, the world and container of the everyday individual and family life has been the privileged set of this implicit exploration, where many paradises can be recognised. It is about achieving adequate protection and getting a space where satisfaction becomes a daily joy for those who live in it: happiness as an attainable goal.

As with many compilations, the essays are not all of thesame caliber and there are some structural issues. And yet the whole is a refreshinglook at the theme of jannat (paradise) in Islamic art and architecturein the Indian subcontinent. Not only are several historical eras encompassed, but the important connection to contemporary artistic expressions is also made.Mumtaz Currim’s introduction succinctly discusses the themes covered. His excellent summary of the philosophical and cosmological concepts of paradisein relation to the garden is followed by a clear account of the chaharbagh (quad-partite garden) and the Mughal legacy of gardens as microcosmsof paradise. The relationship of water to both gardens and paradise are reflectedupon with respect to engineering and the expressions in textile art. Thesection concludes with a look at paradise in literary works and popular art.The portfolio includes beautiful reproductions of two very differentgroups of calligraphic art. The first collection is from the twelfth- to sixteenthcenturymanuscript Qur’ans in Hyderabad’s Salar Jung Museum. The selectedverses refer to paradise, such as those found in the chapters of al-Fātiḥah (TheOpening), al-Raḥmān (The Merciful), and al-Wāqi‘ah (The Event). The manuscripts’calligraphy, as well as their geometric and arabesque elaborations, are vividly reproduced in the color images. The second collection consists ofcontemporary artworks by Salwa Rasool, who uses canvas, vellum, leather, and other materials to focus on the Names of Allah and Sūrat al-Fātiḥah’s,chapter and religious phrases. With very little accompanying text, aside fromthe notation of details, the reader is introduced to the concept of paradisethrough the sheer beauty of the Qur’an’s textual descriptions and the word’sevocative role. Abstract (sommario):
"Italy in the Writings of Dominique Fernandez: The Sacralization of a Profane Space. For Dominique Fernandez, writing about Italy is associated with a quest for original androgyny. The Italian space supports a return to a primitive existence. Synonymous with freedom and sexual undifferentiation, it allows us to find prelapsarian paradise, where the boundaries between the sexes did not exist. Mircea Eliade’s works follow the same logic. Indeed, the author studies the nostalgia for the origins which incites man to discover the mythical primordial era sanctified by the gods. Hence, this article blends the historical-religious endeavor with the literary approach which, though unable to go back in time, keeps repeating it indefinitely, thanks to the demiurgic power of the writer. Abstract (sommario):
The cosmological location and identity of the Paradise in which Adam and Eve dwelled and from which, we are told in Q. 7:22 and 24, they were sent down to earth after giving in to Satan’s temptation and approaching the forbidden tree, has long been a controversial issue among exegetes and theologians. Ṣadr al-Dīn Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Yaḥyā Qawāmī Shīrāzī Mullā Ṣadrā (d. 1050/1640), a flag-bearer for the philosophical and mystical exegesis of the Qur’an, is one of those who has engaged with this question. The subject is important because it is closely connected with several important anthropological Qur’anic topics: the philosophy of the creation of humankind and their earthly abode; the states of human existence before earthly life on this world, and in the descending journey to it; as well as the connections between these states and those following death and in the ascending journey. An analysis of Ṣadrā’s approach to the issue of Adam’s Paradise has implications for both our appreciation of his philosophical understanding of the Qur’an and his methodology, as well as a clearer understanding of his contribution to Islamic philosophical thought. Mullā Ṣadrā took the view that the location of one Paradise on the descending arc of the circle of being, and a second on the ascending arc of this circle, indicate the stages of human existence before and after this world. He believed that these two Paradises suggest the same reality, though from two different aspects; the first shows the inward and indistinct aspect of the human soul while the second represents its outward and distinct side.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Hybrid male Vidua were observed in the field and recorded to document host song mimicry. The mtDNA of one male was sequenced to identify the maternal parent. The hybrid males mimicked songs of Melba Finch (Pytilia melba), the usual host of Long-tailed Paradise Whydah (V. paradisaea), but the mtDNA matched that of indigobirds (V. chalybeata or another species), which parasitize and mimic other estrildid finches. This combination of song behavior and genetics is consistent with a two-generation history that began with a female indigobird (e.g. V. chalybeata) laying in a Melba Finch nest rather than in a nest of her usual host (e.g. Red-billed Firefinch [Lagonosticta senegala]). Her daughter, genetically an indigobird, imprinted on her Melba Finch foster parents and then mated with a male paradise whydah mimicking Melba Finch song. She also laid eggs in Melba Finch nests. Her son, the male hybrid carrying his grandmother's indigobird mtDNA, learned and later mimicked Melba Finch song. Genetic identification of the maternal species origin of this hybrid supports a model of mate choice based on mimetic song in the Vidua finches.

Abstract (sommario):
Benedetto Varchi and Averroism. The article examines the role played by Averroes and the Averroist tradition in Benedetto Varchi's philosophical works. The first part clarifies why Varchi defines Dante as an "Averroist" and reconstructs his ori- ginal reading of the first verse in Paradise (Paradiso). The second part argues that Varchi's plan to vernacularize philosophy, often interpreted as an attempt to "demo- cratize" knowledge, should not prevent us from recognizing that he emphasizes the moral and intellectual differences existing among human beings. Though following Aristotle in saying that "all men by nature desire to know", Varchi shows no qualms in acknowledging that most of them cannot fulfil this desire and, referring to Averroes and Galen, claims that because of their complexio most people cannot understand phi- losophy.

Abstract (sommario):
Furanocoumarins are organic chemical components in grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) juice that have been shown to induce potentially deleterious drug interactions. In this study we measured seven furanocoumarins (FCs) [bergamottin, 6′,7′-dihydroxybergamottin (6,7-DHB), paradisin C, bergaptol, isoimperatorin, 5′,8′-dimethylallyloxypsoralen (5,8-DMP), and epoxybergamottin (EBM)] in fruit of three grapefruit cultivars [Foster (Fos), Low Acid Foster (LAF), and Hudson (Hud)], one pummelo (C. maxima) cultivar [Hirado Buntan (HBP)], 17 randomly selected hybrids from HBP× Hud, and 31 other triploid hybrids. Bergamotton, 6,7-DHB, and paradisin C were not detected or extremely low in HBP (0.00, 0.11, and 0.00 mg·L−1) and LAF (0.40, 3.83, and 0.00 mg·L−1) compared with Hud (13.03. 9.58, and 6.11 mg·L−1) and Fos (6.48, 14.38, and 6.11 mg·L−1). In these hybrids, 6,7-DHB, bergamottin, and paradisin C obviously cosegregated in an approximate rate of 1:1. The three FCs in eight hybrids were not detected or extremely low, like HBP, the maternal parent; those in the other nine were as high as or higher than Hud, the paternal parent. The same segregation tendency was also observed in these triploid hybrids. Based on all the cultivars and hybrids, strong correlations existed among 6,7-DHB, bergamottin, and paradisin C (coefficient up to 0.909). Such strong correlations may reflect their metabolic links in the bergamottin pathway. The 1:1 cosegregation and strong correlation among the three FCs suggested that the trait of FCs is likely controlled by one single enzymatic or regulatory gene in the pathway. The FC profiles and inheritance may lead to a genomic and breeding solution to the grapefruit FC–drug interaction issue. Selection of FC-low or FC-free seedless grapefruit cultivars is underway.

Abstract (sommario):
The article sheds light on the cultural reception of Walking of Agapios to Paradise, an apocryphal Christian apocalypse of early Byzantine origin, in Ukrainian medieval and early modern literature. In the territory of Rus’ the earliest known translation into Old Church Slavonic was found in the Uspensky Codex of the 12th – 13th century with the title “The Narration of Our Father Agapios about whoever takes his cross and follows Christ”. Along with “The Walk of Zosima to Rahman”, and “The Tale of Macarius of Rome”, this text is a part of the apocryphal corpus full of marvels and fantastic elements and dedicated to the theme of extremely difficult and voluntary journeys of mortals to the earthly paradise. This study is an attempt to trace national varieties of Ukrainian adaptations of the legendary plot and compare Greek redactions of the text (focusing on the Athens manuscript), “The Narration of Our Father Agapious...” from the Uspensky Codex with the late versions of “Walking of Agapios to Paradise” in Ukrainian compilations of the 16th and 17th centuries. It is proven that, in contrast to numerous works of translated literature, “paradisal” apocrypha during adaptation to the local culture were not subjected to radical changes, apart from the fact that both in the Uspensky Codex and early modern Ukrainian manuscripts exotic and fantastic elements found in the Greek original text are reduced to a minimum, whereas the symbolic dimension of narration is fundamental. Special attention is paid to translation strategies of scribes of the Uspensky Codex, Belarusian manuscript from the Chudov Monastery (the 16th century), and Stepan Komarevsky’s manuscript (the 17th century). It is hypothesized that transformation of Agapios the Pilgrim into Agapit the Healer in the late Ukrainian compilations, as well as completely rewritten final episodes of the text in Belarusian manuscript from the Chudov Monastery, can be influenced by the original literature of the Kyivan State, namely “Kyiv-Pechersk Patericon” and the local cult of St. Agapit Pechersky.

Toni Morrison’s Paradise (1998) is a penetrating representation of African-American history that examines a number of topics which I will describe in the introduction to this work. Principally, I will in this paper scrutinize one of the most important of the subjects portrayed in Paradise—black history and political and cultural development within the parameters of American culture. As important as a reformed present is for the activist Morrison, we may extend her view of “current” African-American history all that way back to the slavery era, for it is in this era that African-American modern history truly begins, and these people actually become involved in American life and culture in significant and important ways. Morrison has recognized the narrative possibilities of this “long view” of history reaching back some 160 years. This view accords with Morrison’s interest in ancestry and the ancestor, memory and ritual, and founding cultural mythologies. In these frameworks the citizens of Ruby and the inhabitants of the Convent— Paradise’s two sites of differing and often conflicting conceptions of social and intellectual engagement—participate in a politico-cultural dialog that is germane to long-running debates in African-American communities.

Abstract (sommario):
Antiplasmodial effect of Citrus limon and Citrus paradisi extracts on Plasmodium berghei-infected mice was studied. Twenty five albino mice were randomized into five categories of G, L, GL, ACT (positive control) and NC which stand for grape, lemon, grape and lemon combined extracts, artemisinin combined therapy and negative control respectively. The NC group did not receive any intervention. Other treatments were administered orally for 12 days whereas administration of ACT lasted for 3 days. Blood was collected from the tail vein of the mice at a three day interval through venipuncture. Thick blood films were prepared and parasite densities were estimated using standard parasitological techniques. Results were analysed with ANOVA and Duncan multiple range tests. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) between parasite densities of the treatment groups and the negative control at baseline levels. However, as the treatment progressed from day 3 through day 9, there were significant reductions (p<0.05) in parasite densities among treatment groups when compared to the negative control. In this study, extracts of C. limon and C. paradisi in both single and combined strengths have been found to have antiplasmodial properties in mice. ACT possessed the highest antiplasmodial effect while C. limon as a single treatment ranked second in possession of antiplasmodial activity but exhibited increased RBC lysis. In combination, C. limoni and C. paradise extracts showed antiplasmodial activity that is slightly less than that exhibited by the lemon extract alone, but maintained normal RBC morphology whereas C. paradisi extract alone exhibited the lowest level of parasite clearance with atrophied red blood cells. Investigation of the effects of the extracts on liver, kidney and gastrointestinal tissues of mice is recommended before they could be prescribed as antimalaria for other animals and humans.

Abstract (sommario):
Why was Eve created? In De Genesi ad litteram, Augustine notoriously gives the answer that it was only causa pariendi, “for the sake of childbearing.” Other late antique interpreters of Genesis emphasize the purpose of conjugal union and domesticity. But a fuller reading of Augustine’s thoughts on the subject reveals the moment between the creation of Eve and the fall as pregnant with extraordinary possibility. This moment, of indeterminate length—for humans had not yet fallen into time—provides an opportunity for Augustine to unleash his theological imagination. This lecture is about paradise. It eschews the customary focus on Adam’s paradisal desire to think about Eve’s beginning. Augustine uses this beginning to emphasize the importance of sociality, and of marriage as its most perfect realization. He takes the quotidian miracle of childbirth as our closest intimation of God’s act of creation. And he imagines new meanings for the trinity of Villanova’s motto: ueritas, unitas, and caritas.

Abstract (sommario):
SummaryThe Blue Bird-of-paradise Paradisaea rudolphi (BBOP) is a globally threatened species restricted to the montane rainforest of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Local inhabitants hunt the BBOP for its feathers, which is one of the main reasons for its population decline. The feathers are used for both traditional and commercial purposes. So far virtually nothing is known about which factors enhance or decrease hunting pressure, and how this is influenced by ongoing market integration of local communities. Field research in PNG suggests that the demand for BBOP feathers and, with that, the collection intensity, primarily stem from traditional uses, such as head decoration. Interest in the traditional use of the feathers is particularly high in remote villages, while the value attributed to living birds is higher in less remote villages, suggesting a decrease of BBOP collection intensity with increased market integration. However, increased access to ‘outside influences’ (namely tourism and Christianity) may both decrease as well as increase hunting pressures. Finally, we argue that awareness-raising among local people, government officials and tourists may well be the most sensible conservation measure.

Abstract (sommario):
In the last chapter of the last volume of The Chronicles of Narnia, the protagonists arrive in Aslan’s country, Narnia’s equivalent of Heaven, or at least its outskirts. C.S. Lewis’s portrayal of this imaginary world is of course inspired by the Bible, and by previous literary depictions such as Bunyan’s Celestial City in The Pilgrim’s Progress or Dante’s Paradiso in The Divine Comedy, but it also has a unique quality. Although on the surface Lewis sometimes seems to contradict the Biblical hypotext, he never betrays the spirit of Chapters 21-22 of the book of Revelation. Indeed, he achieves the masterstroke of fleshing out this highly symbolic description of the new Jerusalem by presenting his young readers with a vivid and concrete picture, reassuring those of them who might dread being bored in paradise. The way in which he represents Heaven is arguably one of his most successful attempts at overcoming children’s potential misgivings and he accomplishes it by addressing the reader’s imagination through myth.

"The Motif of Crossing Borders in Carpathian German Autobiographies. Josef Derx's Memories is the autobiography of a Wehrmacht soldier who becomes a banker after the war. Free of mythology and biblical references, but often with humorous-parodic undertones, the narrative focuses on spatial and temporal details of Derx's life story. In the description of everyday life in a prison camp and the escape from it, the transformation of the remembered self into a remembering self can be observed textually and stylistically by means of changes in tempo and rhetorical figures. Elisabeth Metzl's Ein Paradies verloren aber wir leben (A Lost Paradise but We Live) tells the story of a young woman who has to flee from Bratislava to Austria in her “travelling prison” before the war, without knowing that she will leave her homeland behind forever. The search for her lost sons becomes a personal odyssey. Keywords: autobiography, remembered self, remembering self, personal odyssey "

Abstract (sommario):
When Dante ascended to the Sphere of the Sun, he was directed by St. Thomas Aquinas to consider a circle of shining lights. One of the lights, St. Thomas tells him, is Gratian, “who served the one and the other court so well that it gives pleasure in Paradise” (che l'uno e l'altro foro/aiutò sì che piace in paradiso[Paradiso10:104–5]). The allusion to two “courts” (fora) would have puzzled Gratian, but to both Thomas and Dante it would have had a clear reference to the two broad arenas in which the Church's canon law was operative: the external forum of ecclesiastical courts (sometimes known as the “contentious forum”) andthe internal forum of conscience andof penance. This new way of describing the Church's legal competence had been invented in the decades immediately following the publication of Gratian's magisterial textbook (ca. 1140), and it would have important consequences for the history of medieval canon law in the years to come.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper focuses on the subversive potential of myths by exploring Margaret Atwood’s feminist revision of creation, more specifically the myth of paradise. According to Adrienne Rich’s definition, the “re-vision” of myths signifies the critical adaptation, appropriation, and invasion of traditional texts. As such, myths have not only legitimized exploitative power relationships, but they have also served as a powerful means to participate in and subvert hegemonic discourses. By drawing on the theories of Aby Warburg, Ernst Cassirer, and Hans Blumenberg, for whom myths constitute cultural-artistic mediations that involve the polarities of affect and intellect, terror and logos, Atwood’s revision of paradise in the MaddAddam trilogy may be approached in itself as – to use a term by Hans Blumenberg – a “work of logos.” I argue that Atwood revises paradise by duplicating the ancient human dreams of paradise into Crake’s techno pagan and Adam One’s eco-millennialist “gardens of delights,” both of which are refracted through evolutionary science and ecology.Characterized by human destructiveness, these posthuman paradises feature multiple Eves alongside the dominant male figures. Among Atwood’s Eves, there is the brazen Oryx as exploited racial “Other” of white society in the pathos formula of the Asian “digital virgin prostitute.” Atwood employs a self-reflexivity regarding myths that is characteristic of postmodern pastiche and thus highlights storytelling as the distinguishing characteristic of humankind, while her use of an evolutionary grotesque aesthetics erodes clear-cut distinctions between humans, animals, and post-humans. The myth of paradise, the trilogy suggests, is also always a myth of extinction.

Abstract (sommario):
The article is centered on the study of poetic phraseology in Russian rock poetry exemplified in songs by famous rock musicians such as S. Namin from the rock group «Tsvety», V. Tsoy from the rock group «Kino», Kipelov from the rock group «Aria», V. Butusov from the rock group «Nautilus Pompilius», S. Surganova from the rock group «Surganova and Orkestr» and others. The purpose of this article is to analyze peculiar qualities of reminiscence quote ‘lost paradise’ in the poetic discourse of the XX–XXI century in lyric texts of famous rock bands. The objectives of the study are to examine the features of the phraseological unit ‘lost paradise’ in the individual author’s use in the poetic works in which this phraseological unit receives a clearly-figurative embodiment, as well as to determine the features of verbalization of the concept of happiness through this phraseological unit. The main methods applied in the research are a philological analysis of the text and a structural-semantic method of analyzing language units. The study of the phraseological unit ‘lost paradise’ within the framework of poetic discourse resulted in the conclusion that poetic phrase ‘lost paradise’ is often used in poetic discourses among rock performers of the past and present centuries, verbalizing the concept of happiness in different ways. Phraseologiсal units with a ‘paradise’ component form a phraseological field, which includes such phraseological units as lost paradise, earthly paradise, heavenly paradise, from paradise to paradise, an unknown paradise. These phraseological units come into various systemic connections, i.e. synonymous, antonymic, associative, which allows us to represent the axiological category of happiness in different ways. The axiological connotation of these phraseological units, which arises as a result of revealing the associative-figurative basis of phraseological units, inclusion in the artistic-figurative system, building new contextual connections and relationships, also allows you to understand the author's value guidelines.
