Marcato, Enrico. Personal Names in the Aramaic Inscriptions of Hatra. Venice: Edizioni Ca' Foscari, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.30687/978-88-6969-231-4.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This book offers a comprehensive linguistic evaluation of the 376 personal names attested in the roughly 600 Aramaic inscriptions of Hatra, the famous Northern Mesopotamian city that flourished in the Parthian age, between the 1st century BC and the 3rd century AD. This study benefits from the publication of many Hatran inscriptions during recent decades, which have yielded rich onomastic data, and some fresh readings of these epigraphic sources. This work is subdivided into three main parts: an “Onomastic Catalogue”, a “Linguistic Analysis”, and a “Concordances Section”. The “Catalogue” is organized as a list of entries, in which every name is transliterated, translated (whenever possible), discussed from an etymological perspective, provided with onomastic parallels, and accompanied by its attestations in the Hatran Aramaic corpus. The “Catalogue” is followed by a “Linguistic Analysis” which describes, firstly, the principal orthographic, phonological, morphological, and syntactical features of Hatran names. The linguistic discussion proper is followed by a semantic taxonomy of the names which make up the corpus and an overview of the religious significance of the theophoric names. “Charts of Concordances” end the book.

Abstract (sommario):
This book examines interracial labor and radical organizing in Los Angeles, California, and the United States/Mexico borderlands between 1900 and 1930. Domestic and transnational migration to Los Angeles—including from Europe, Asia, and Mexico—created one of the most racially diverse regions in the United States. Uneven regional economic development drove continued labor mobility for many working-class residents. The book documents a thread of working-class culture in which interracial solidarities formed to oppose capitalism, racism, and often the state itself. These solidarities flourished most frequently among workers with the most precarious employment and living situations, fueled by the ideals advanced in anarchism, socialist internationalism, the syndicalism of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and the Partido Liberal Mexicano (PLM). This book uses the anarchist notion of affinity to frame its understanding of interracial organizing as the mobility of workers often made coalitions and solidarities short lived. Affinity frames the individual cooperative actions that shaped the social practices of resistance often too unstructured or episodic for historians to capture. This approach maintains focus on the continuity of organizing practices while tracing changing solidarities, associations, and organizations that formed and dissolved through struggle, repression, and factionalism. The radical practices that germinated in and near Los Angeles produced some of the broadest examples of interracial cooperation in U.S. history.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter chronicles the formative moments of the national urban alliance in American politics: when city leaders created the U.S. Conference of Mayors and petitioned Congress to develop a national urban policy in response to the massive crisis of the Great Depression. These leaders’ lobbying efforts led to a new kind of politics in which cities saw each other not only as rivals but as allies. This coalition lobbied for new urban policies—intergovernmental aid, relief work, affordable housing, and infrastructure development—that have remained the core of national urban policy and were ultimately institutionalized with the creation of the Department of Housing and Urban Development in 1965. Though the city leaders who created the USCM were from both parties, by the end of the 1940s, differences between the parties’ coalitions and elites meant that the urban political order had found a more comfortable home in the Democratic Party.

Abstract (sommario):
This introductory chapter outlines the political achievements and contributions made by black women in the United States between the 1910s and the 1970s. In addition, the chapter focuses on New York City as a setting—given that it was a central hub of progressive politics in the United States as well as the fact that the demographic shifts the city experienced in the first two decades of the twentieth century created significant political and cultural opportunities for African Americans. New York City was fertile ground for stimulating one's mind and sharpening one's political skills. Thus, starting in the 1910s and for the next sixty years, politically active black women not only built networks that sustained them and their communities, but they helped transform the city's and the nation's political parties, its laws, and its legislative bodies.

Abstract (sommario):
This pivotal chapter draws on the insights of city delegation theory and uses a mixed-methods approach to help explain one of the most important changes in American political history—the midcentury partisan realignment in response to civil rights. Using a wide range of evidence and analysis, this chapter illustrates how city representatives, including those with all-white constituencies who were not particularly supportive of civil rights, were cohesively supportive of a new approach to national race relations. Throughout the Long New Deal, city representatives—especially those from cities with strong local institutions of horizontal integration—were the most supportive of civil rights liberalism. This account forces a reconsideration of the forces behind political change and examines how local institutions can build alliances to support inclusive policies and politics, even when the constituencies behind such coalitions are not natural allies.

Abstract (sommario):
This work is about a political arm of social movements during the period of 1953 to 1964 in Campo Mourão city. These social movements have had many faces, such as Partido Comunista represented by Saint Benedict village, General Union of Workers, Campina da Lagoa city and Little School of People. The Little School had been founded by bishop Dom Eliseu Simões Mendes when he arrived in Mossoró city, located in Northern of Brazil, where a big ecclesiastical work with poor people was developed. That work have had in its bases one specific theory that believes in one point of view for adult people – education for transformation, in another words – to teach to read and write with real problems that are around you. But in 1964, had a big change side in the brasilian politic. This happening brought the banishment of all those social movements, include Little School of Workers and, in this place, that poor people have had another school only for children.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter continues examining the relationships between anarchists and their sometime-allies, sometime-antagonists in the emerging Partido Socialista (PS) in the 1910s. Here, the chapter considers the agitations arising from the radical bloc in the city of Bayamón. The Bayamón anarchists continued their agitation throughout the 1910s, sometimes working with Socialists but also becoming less conciliatory and more rigid in their quest for an anarchist social revolution. By 1918, anarchists centered in the city took an increasingly hard line against all aspects of the PS—especially concerning the relevance of electoral politics for the future of Puerto Rican workers, the appropriate responses to militarism, and the new military draft for the Great War that some PS leaders such as the elected Socialist senator Santiago Iglesias supported.

Abstract (sommario):
The history explored in this chapter focused on the Florentine Histories allows us to understand the concepts and proposals for the political reform of Florence that Machiavelli advanced in the Discursus and the Minuta and which were different to any constitution in the past. Analysing the struggles that animated Florence from 1215 to 1512, Machiavelli revealed the different constitutions that emerged from the struggles, struggles that the constitutions partially caused and partially attempted to neutralize. Underlining the defects of the past constitutions of the city, he set out the two main political coordinates around which he constructed his plans for the reform of Florence: the tumults and a new idea of mixture.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
To find a political culture that was actually shared by rural lords and country dwellers, as well as by country and city, and aristocrats and prince, it would probably be necessary to look at that of the Guelph and Ghibelline metafactions, capable as they were of activating ties of solidarity and a strong sense of obedience. More than the ideological component—although the contents of this evolved constantly throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries and beyond—what generated membership of the parties was above all their role of mediation between environments at a distance from one another, such as the centre of the domain and its peripheries. The emergence of a new bureaucratically oriented state did not exhaust the spaces for political interaction and the Guelph and Ghibelline parties ended up monopolizing the exchange of particular resources: exemptions, pardons, ecclesiastical benefices for subjects, information and political support for the duke.

James, Simon. The Roman Military Base at Dura-Europos, Syria. Oxford University Press, 2019. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198743569.001.0001.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Dura-Europos, a Parthian-ruled Greco-Syrian city, was captured by Rome c.AD165. It then accommodated a Roman garrison until its destruction by Sasanian siege c.AD256. Excavations of the site between the World Wars made sensational discoveries, and with renewed exploration from 1986 to 2011, Dura remains the best-explored city of the Roman East. A critical revelation was a sprawling Roman military base occupying a quarter of the city's interior. This included swathes of civilian housing converted to soldiers' accommodation and several existing sanctuaries, as well as baths, an amphitheatre, headquarters, and more temples added by the garrison. Base and garrison were clearly fundamental factors in the history of Roman Dura, but what impact did they have on the civil population? Original excavators gloomily portrayed Durenes evicted from their homes and holy places, and subjected to extortion and impoverishment by brutal soldiers, while recent commentators have envisaged military-civilian concordia, with shared prosperity and integration. Detailed examination of the evidence presents a new picture. Through the use of GPS, satellite, geophysical and archival evidence, this volume shows that the Roman military base and resident community were even bigger than previously understood, with both military and civil communities appearing much more internally complex than has been allowed until now. The result is a fascinating social dynamic which we can partly reconstruct, giving us a nuanced picture of life in a city near the eastern frontier of the Roman world.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This chapter examines the pre-SEZ agrarian milieu of Rajpura, the study’s main fieldsite. On the eve of its dispossession, Rajpura was a monsoon-dependent agricultural and livestock-rearing village in which many farmers were already partially diversified from agriculture. Sharp class, caste, and gender inequalities reflected the failures of the postcolonial Indian state to effectively redistribute land, invest in education and social welfare, and tackle entrenched forms of social domination that characterized pre-independence rural Rajasthan. Unlike some parts of India, the village had little political history of peasant rebellion. These three factors would help the Rajasthan government produce compliance to dispossession in Rajpura, and would affect the ability of farmers to benefit from the economic changes unleashed by the Mahindra World City.

Abstract (sommario):
At the beginning of the thirteenth century, two new actors made their appearance in the political life of the communes: the factions and the Societas Populi. This chapter focuses on the political language and culture of these two elements, highlighting the tendency of various social actors to consistently represent the unity of the political body. This was the supreme value which neither the factions nor the Popolo would renounce, even when they were alone in power: on the contrary, in fact, it was very much in that kind of situation that the parties tended to represent themselves as ‘the whole’. The chapter then goes on to examine the role that both the factions and the Societas Populi played in fostering the first experiences of lordly government in the city.

Abstract (sommario):
Research on social networks and voting behavior has been largely limited to long-established democracies. In young democracies with unstable party systems and low levels of mass partisan identification, such networks should be even more important. This chapter examines egocentric political discussion networks in Brazil, where political discussion is plentiful and exposure to disagreement is somewhat more frequent than in the United States. Over the course of campaigns, such conversation affects voting choices and helps citizens learn about candidates and their issue positions; networks are especially important for learning among low-status individuals. The chapter highlights the availability of two important panel data sets incorporating design elements that can improve inference regarding network effects: the 2002–2006 Two-City Brazilian Panel Study and the 2014 Brazilian Electoral Panel Survey.

Abstract (sommario):
Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders owed much of their unexpected popularity in the 2016 primaries to their respective stances on trade and immigration policy. Political elites and policy experts were bewildered by combative talk of building a wall and the ubiquity of anti-TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) sloganeering in what many saw as a bizarre election cycle. They have scrambled to explain both Trump's victory and the new political fault lines that have emerged in both major political parties, largely around trade and immigration. In struggling industrial towns and cities, the rise of Trump and Sanders was less of a surprise. These places have long weathered globalization's storm. Many feel left behind and sold short. They are anxious, and they're demanding answers. Galesburg, Illinois, is one such city.

Abstract (sommario):
What was once a descriptor—Chicago as the last major American city government governed by a political machine—has become a trope, an all-purpose means of explaining public policy aims, achievements, and failures. The nearer-to-reality narrative that captures the essence of Chicago public policy trends in the last generation is neoliberalism. During the long tenure of Mayor Richard M. Daley Chicago’s demolition of high-rise public housing developments, public school restructuring, and long-term leasing of public assets both tracked broader neoliberal policy trends, and in some cases, represented the leading edge of such innovations. Nevertheless, many journalists and some scholars insist on interpreting Chicago politics and policy through the lens of personal corruption and partisan cronyism presumed to be the fundamental attributes of ward-based Democratic Party politics
