Smart city technologies are proliferating in our urban environments. The latest iteration of the urban techno-fix, cities on a global level have begun piloting and plugging into a range of “smart” infrastructure and IoT, resulting in granular and even enactments of “the actually existing smart city.” Rather than evoking the once promised vision of the totalizing smart city, the adoption of these technologies draws attention to the fractured, varied, and layered characteristics of these systems. This paper draws on research into GeoPal, an asset management platform used mainly by business improvement areas (BIAs)—in order to ground our theoretical discussion of oligoptic geospatial surveillance.

Abstract Since the fall of the apartheid regime, critical discourse on and popular imaginations of South Africa have focused with renewed intensity on the city of Johannesburg: its schizophrenic social organization, its fragmented geography, its “citadelization,” its “architecture of fear,” and its development within networks of global capital, all indexes of the ultimate failure of the nation to move beyond its segregated past. In this essay, I will focus on representations of Johannesburg's mutancy, a concept that foregrounds its temporal movements rather than its spatial calcification. In particular, I examine the uses to which the tropes of mutation and the figure of the mutant are put in a number of recent Johannesburg narratives. Mutation here is a logic of discontinuous transformation, distinct from “hybridity,” concerned less with mimicry and in-betweenness than with emergent forms of life in spaces where ideological forces have ceded to material ones. The speculative mutations in these texts give body to various forms of emergent, unconceptualized, or fantastic subjectivities, homologous with but not reducible to the “real” mutations taking place in South African urban space. I am ultimately interested in how these subjectivities inform various imaginations of futurity—catastrophic, deconstructive, and regenerative—within a country in which, as Imraan Coovadia has written, “the conditions for transcending the present are hardly to be conceived” (51).

Abstract (sommario):

The purpose of this study is to provide theoretical methods and practical strategies of crea-ting city identity, and to utilize them as basic tools of city management. Place marketing consists of two parts, place assets making and place promotion. Place asset making is the process of making the place-specific advantage or attractiveness and the place promotion is the process that makes notice of it. The place marketing debates and strategies is quite often confined to partial place marketing, the search for the tactical method of place promotion. However, this study examines the characteristics of full place marketing focused on the place making such as the background, concept, category, participants and principles of place making. This study finds out that the originality, specificity, and indispensability of place asset is the source of competitive advantage. The principles of place asset making are participation, learning and experience, and leadership and networks among actors. The policy implication of this study is that it is most important for the success of place marke-ting to make competitive assets and eventual city identity.

This research was conducted to find out how Work Motivation and Work Competence Toward Performance of Medan City Culture Department Employees. This study uses three variables consisting of Performance variables namely Employees (Y), while the independent variables are Work Motivation (X1) and Work Competence (X2). This type of research is explanatory research through associative research, namely research that aims to explain the difference between two or more variables. The population in this study were all employees of the Medan City Culture Office received 38 civil servants. The method of data collection is done by literature study questionnaire, and observation. Data analysis conducted in this study was hypothesis testing with t test (partial test) and F test (simultaneous test). The results showed that: (1) based on partial tests of Motivation Influenced the performance of Medan City Culture Department employees with a t test of 3.721. (2) Based on a partial competency test on the performance of Medan City Culture Department employees with a t test of 4.073. (3) Based on the Simultaneous test the Effect of Work Motivation and Work Competence on the Performance of Medan City Culture Office Employees with an F test of 62.332.

The number of partial-foot amputations performed is increasing, and many recommendations have been made regarding the use of prostheses and footwear designed to prevent higher-level amputations in this population. The present study investigated the use of prostheses and shoe inserts and the types of footwear worn by partial-foot amputees in the inner city to determine whether previous recommendations are being followed as well as whether new prosthetic styles are being used. The study surveyed 110 patients (73 men and 37 women) with a mean age of 58.6 years (range, 21 to 86 years) with partial-foot amputations of all levels. The results showed that about one-half of all patients wore a shoe-insert orthosis. Although 54% wore some form of special footwear to accommodate and protect the residual foot, no patient in this study wore a shoe with a rocker-bottom sole. Only one patient with a transmetatarsal amputation used a brace and only one patient in the entire study wore a modern cosmetic foot prosthesis. (J Am Podiatr Med Assoc 91(1): 34-49, 2001)

IntroductionIn the USA, menthol cigarettes are associated with smoking initiation and decreased likelihood of cessation, particularly for low-income and non-White populations. Local ordinances to restrict menthol cigarette sales are an emergent policy option. In July 2016, Chicago, Illinois became the first major US city to ban menthol cigarette sales within 500 feet of schools. This study assessed ban compliance in June 2017.MethodsWe randomly selected 100 of 154 stores within 500 feet of a high school. Ninety stores were included in the analysis, excluding permanently closed stores or stores that did not sell tobacco prior to the ban. Compliance was determined by whether a menthol cigarette pack was purchased. We also assessed presence of menthol cigarette replacement packs. Multivariable logistic regression modelled compliance by store type, school (distance to high school, school type) and neighbourhood-level factors (poverty level, proportion of non-White residents).ResultsCompliance rate was 57% (weighted, n=53) and no replacement packs were observed. Non-compliant stores were more likely to advertise menthol cigarettes, but ads were present in eight compliant stores. Gas stations had 81% lower odds (OR=0.19, 95% CI 0.06 to 0.58) of complying with the menthol cigarette ban compared with larger/chain stores. School-level and neighbourhood factors were not associated with compliance.DiscussionThe poor compliance observed with Chicago’s partial menthol cigarette ban highlights the need for comprehensive efforts. Optimising local resources to target enforcement efforts in gas stations could improve compliance. Ordinances that also restrict advertising could potentially enhance ban impact by reducing exposure to product and promotions.

The research examines the effect of budget goal clarity and accounting control on depen-dent variable with Mental Model as mediating variable on accountability of city gov-ernment performance. This research used sample consisting of 66 employees in The Finance Division of City Government Semarang that were managing income and ex-penditure of state budget (APBD), selected by means of judgment sampling. The hypo-thesis testing was done by using Warp Partial Least Square 3.0. The partial result of the research indicated, the budget goal clarity, accounting control are factor that affect posi-tively on Accountability of City Government Performance. Simultaneously, it indicated Mental model didnt mediate the relationship between budget goal clarity and account-ing control toward accountability of city government performance. Yet, budget goal clarity and accounting control as partial impact to Mental Model. The positive result in budget goal clarity gives the impact for city of government to apply budget stated clearly and specifically. Accounting Control system should be used to facilitate the planning and supervision of the organization. Mental model of the operational officers do not reflect operational processes in various environments. This is due to the fact that most of the budget has been set with the existing systems that is standardized by LAKIP, so it can-not be flexible adjustment in various environments.

Methods of data collection in this study using questionnaires to 72 respondents and analyzed by using liniear regression beganda. The result of the analysis shows partially the influence of organizational culture toward OCB at Sekretariat Daerah Denpasar City is positive and significant. That is, the better the organizational culture, the higher the OCB at the Regional Secretariat of Denpasar. The partial influence of the organization's commitment to the OCB at the Denpasar Regional Secretariat is positive and significant. That is, the better the organization's commitment, the higher the OCB of honorarium employees in the Secretariat of Denpasar City. Abstract (sommario):

This research purposes for determining the use of agricultural mechanization and its impact on rice farming in Sidomulyo Gapoktan, of Sananwetan District of Blitar City, which is expected to improve the living standards and welfare of its group members. The total samples which taken were 50 rice farmers of Sidomulyo Gapoktan in Sananwetan District of Blitar City. The sampling taken using purposive random sampling technique, which is deliberately chosed based on criteria which determined by the researcher. The Data analysis was carried out descriptively, using the Mann-Whitney Test and the Multiple Linear Regression Cobb Douglas model. Based on the results of the study, it was found that the mechanization of rice farming in Sidomulyo Gapoktan, Sananwetan District, Blitar City has not still optimal. This is caused by the farmers' perceptions of the results of unsatisfactory performance of agricultural machinery, a sense of humanity towards' farm labors, narrow area of farming and insufficient availability of agricultural machinery. The result of reseach which was used Mann-Whitney Test analysis, found that pesticide using and labor requirements were smaller and differed significantly in the use of full mechanization rather than partial mechanization. Harvest variable costs were lower in the use of full mechanization and were significantly different than using partial mechanisms. The Productivity of rice in full mechanization is 782,15 kg / 1000m2 while in partial mechanization was 682.87 kg / 1000m2. For farmers' income in full mechanization is Rp. 1,153,407, - per 1000 m2, in partial mechanization of Rp. 1,590,574, - per 1000m2. Multiple Linear Regression Analysis of the Cobb Douglas model shows that the land area (m2), seed costs and the use of mechanization have a significant influence on the income of rice farming in Sananwetan District, Blitar City.

This research is entitled Analysis of Hotel Tax Influence, Advertisement Tax and Parking Tax onRegional Original Income. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of hotel tax, advertisement taxand parking tax on local revenue in Central Java Province in 2009-2016. The data used are Regional Original Revenue, Hotel Tax, Advertising Tax and Parking Tax forSurakarta City, Semarang City, Pati Regency, Klaten Regency and Banyumas Regency in 2009-2016 toexamine the effect of hotel tax, advertisement tax and parking tax on local revenue. The analysis techniqueused is Multiple Regression Analysis. The results showed that Hotel Tax has a partial effect on Regional Original Income with a significantvalue of 0.009, Advertisement Tax has no partial effect on Regional Original Income with a significant valueof 0.349 and parking tax does not have a partial effect on Regional Original Income with a significant valueof 0.456. While the hotel tax, advertisement tax and parking tax simultaneously affect local revenue.

Many Detroit business and political leaders, as well as many ordinary citizens, believe that the city can be restored to vitality. At least four visions of the future city animate their efforts: the city as a great international model for green planning and technology leadership, the city as an entertainment destination, the city as a metropolitan center, and the city as a pioneer destination on the urban frontier. As these visions have simultaneously played out, they have perhaps improved daily life in Detroit in the last decade, but each is finally a partial and inadequate vision. None speaks directly to the interests of the bulk of the city's working class and poor population. Some of the visions lack sufficient scale relative to the city's problems, and some cannot be realized for lack of resources. All of these visions finally represent failures of city–building.

This research was conducted to determine the influence of mobile phone sales, sales of credit vouchers and sales of handphone accessories to the revenue of cellular entrepreneurs in the City of Sukabumi. Data collection in research carried out by interview, observation and literature study. Test equipment used with multiple regression analysis, regression coefficient analysis, coefficient of determination with testing partial and simultaneous testing. This study used quantitative research methods aimed at testing predetermined hypotheses. The sample used in this study amounted to 40 respondents. Analysis of the data used is the multiple regression analysis test and the classic assumption test. From the results of the significance test, there is a significant simultaneous influence (together) of the variables of mobile phone sales, sales of credit vouchers and sales handphone accessories to the revenue of cellular entrepreneurs. While based on partial testing, there is a significant influence of mobile phone sales, sales of credit vouchers and sales of handphone accessories to the revenue of cellular entrepreneurs. And the order of variable contribution that influences the revenue of cellular entrepreneurs is the variable of sales of the credit vouchers, sales of handphone accessories and mobile phone sales.

ABSTRACT Introduction The effect of Khat and Shammah habits, with the parafunctional jaw activities that accompany them, on the integrity of the natural dentition, dental restorations, and prostheses has not yet been investigated. This study is the first attempt to identify the patterns of restorative failure among Khat chewers and Shammah users in Jazan City, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in 294 recruits among dental clinics in Jazan City, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, from October 1, 2015, to April 30, 2016. The patients were surveyed and examined to identify the type of restorations/prosthesis they had and their failures. Bivariate analysis was conducted to investigate the association of the restorative failure with the demographic variables. General linear model was performed to investigate the association between restorations/prostheses failure and Khat/Shammah use with the controlling factors of age and gender as independent variables. Results Khat/Shammah use was statistically significantly associated with restorative failure (p < 0.05) relative to amalgam, composite, crowns, fixed partial dentures, removable partial dentures, and complete dentures. In addition, a significant association of restorative failure was observed with gender, education, and brushing. Conclusion Consumption of Khat/Shammah may be attributed as one of the reasons associated with restorative failure among the Saudi population. City-based industry clusters represent the nodes of economic productions as well as lays the ground for policy experimentation. The popularity of clusters as a concept is attributed to the positive effects of contiguity it offers to all the constituting firms. Despite this notable fact, in India, citybased industrial clusters have failed to achieve attention for policy per se. By and large, the policy thinking has primarily remained focused either to the industry classification or to the geographical state boundaries or by the nature/size of the firms. This article organizes the discussion in the context of the key theme of cluster-based schemes and policy implementation in India. In order to ascertain the doctrine of a distinct policy aimed at clusters, Kendall’s Tau test was conducted on a sample of 126 firms belonging to four industry clusters. The result of the study suggests that in India, there exists sufficient scope for local city-based industry cluster policy. The article concludes by suggesting a few recommendations.

Mechanization is one form of technology adoption to improve yields in rice farming. The aims of the research to determine the use of agricultural mechanization and its impact on rice farming in Sananwetan Sub-District, Blitar City expected to improve the standard of living and welfare of its group members. The number of samples taken was 50 rice farmers in Sananwetan Sub-District, Blitar City, chosen by using proportional random sampling. Data analysis using the Mann-Whitney Test and the Multiple Linear Regression Cobb Douglas Model. From the results of interviews in this study show that the use of the mechanization of rice farming in Sananwetan Sub-District, Blitar City is still not optimal. This was due to farmers' perceptions of the unsatisfactory results of agricultural machinery performance, a sense of humanity to 'farm laborers', narrow land area and insufficient availability of farm machinery. While from the results of Mann Whitney's test show that pesticide use and labor requirements were smaller and differed significantly in the use of full mechanization rather than partial mechanization. Other than that, the variable cost of the harvest is lower in the use of full mechanization and is significantly different compared to using the mechanism partially. Rice productivity in full mechanization was 782.15 kg / 1000m2 while partial mechanization was 682.87 kg / 1000m2. For farmers' income in full mechanization is IDR. 1,153,407, - per 1000 m2, in the partial mechanization of IDR. 1,590,574, - per 1000m2. From Cobb Douglas model multiple linear regression analysis found that land area (m2), seed costs and the use of mechanization had a significant effect on the income of rice farming in Sananwetan District, Blitar City.

Villages and sub-districts in Jayapura city are public organizations that provide service to the community. Villages and urban organizations require leadership, organizational culture and strong work motivation to support performance improvement. This research was conducted in 39 villages and sub-districts in the city of Jayapura. The population of this study was permanent employees in the villages and sub-districts in the city of Jayapura, which numbered 96 employees. All populations were chosen as research respondents, this research was census research. The analytical tool used in the research is Partial Least Square (PLS). The results of the study show that, first, direct leadership has no significant effect on employee performance, second, organizational culture has a significant effect on employee performance, third, leadership has a significant effect on work motivation, fourth, organizational culture has a significant effect on work motivation, fifth, work motivation has a significant effect on employee performance, sixth, work motivation is a perfect mediator of the influence of leadership on employee performance, seventh, work motivation as a partial mediator of the influence of organizational culture on employee performance.

This study aims to analyze city branding in tourist areas, with the variables being studied city brand attractiveness, tourism experience, city brand attitude, and city brand equity in tourism areas in Indonesia. This research method uses a quantitative approach with online surveys design, namely by taking a sample from a population and using a questionnaire to collect data. The main thing is that there is a hypothesis that will be tested for truth in this study. The survey questionnaire used is the Ministry of Education and Culture survey form. The research sample was conducted on 181 visitors to Bandung Barat, Indonesia. Structural equation modelling in this study uses a partial least square (PLS) structure. The research findings show city brand attractiveness and tourism experience on city brand equity through city brand attitude. This study produces a new model, namely, city brand attitude as a moderating variable that plays an essential role in building city brand attractiveness and tourism experience, which have the tourists primary preference. The tourist of Bandung Barat to be used as an affirmation of the identity of a vital city branding compared to other cities.

Abstract. The aim of this study was to model the surface urban heat island (SUHI) based on remote sensing data, urban morphology parameters and partial least square (PLS) regression using Santa Rosa, California, USA as a case study. Night-time Land surface temperature (LST) was estimated for all the available Landsat 8 night-time data from august to November for the year 2013. Urban morphology parameters such as Building Volume (BV) and Sky View Factor (SVF) were calculated using available LIDAR data of the study area and Normalized Difference Vegetation (NDVI), Index based Built-up Index (IBI) were calculated using Landsat 8 data sets and were used to identify the impact of urban surface characteristics on land surface temperature. Partial least square (PLS) regression analysis was used to assess the correlation and statistically significance of the variables on LST and model the night time LST of the study area. The results of the analysis showed that the LST has a strong positive relationship with IBI and BV and negative relationship with SVF and NDVI and also at night-time, results showed that SVF has a stronger impact on LST differences than NDVI where areas with high density trees had higher temperature than obstacle free vegetated areas. The result of night time LST modelling of the study area was R-square with value of 0.81 between estimated and predicted LST and RMSE with value of 1.02 °C.

In response to these deficiencies，projection pursuit Partial Least-Square Regression based on real coded accelerating genetic algorithm model is developed to analyze and predict land use change in Yanji City. The computation results show that the relative error of Coupling Model of Partial Least-Square Regression Based on Projection Pursuit is smaller than traditional Partial Least-Square Regression model’s, and it has improved the prediction precision evidently.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui dan menganalisa pengaruh serempak dan partial kepuasan konsumen terhadap perilaku pembelian ulang konsumen di Bangi Kopitiam Café and Resto. Jenis penelitian adalah kuantitatif (menunjukkan hubungan antar variabel). Populasi dalam penelitian ini adalah konsumen yang telah mengunjungi Bangi Kopitiam Café and Resto minimal 2 kali. Teknik penarikan sampel dalam penelitian ini menggunakan accidental sampling, dengan jumlah sampel sebanyak 90 responden. Pengambilan data menggunakan kuesioner. Metode analisis data adalah linear regresi berganda. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kepuasan konsumen secara serempak dan partial berpengaruh signifikan terhadap perilaku pembelian ulang konsumen pada Bangi Kopitiam Café and Resto di Kota Palu.

Background: Congenital hemihypertrophy is a very rare condition that can be isolated or occurs in association with other congenital abnormalities and neoplasms, and well-recognized syndromes. Well-known syndromes that are associated with congenital hemihypertrophy include Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome, Beckwith Wiedemann syndrome, Goldenhar syndrome, Silver-Russell's syndrome. Partial hemihypertrophy affecting a limb is an extremely rare condition, and was probably first reported in 1949 by web, and very few cases have been reported in the literature. Patients and methods: Ten month old infant with partial hemihypertrophy, delayed development and facial dysmorphism who was observed at the pediatric neuropsychiatry clinic of Baghdad Medical City was studied. Results: The boy was hypotonic with developmental delay and has not been able sit yet. He had low set ears and facial dysmorphism consisting of hypertelorism and epicanthic folds. His right lower limb was obviously larger than the left. Parents were consanguineous, and family history was negative for similar condition. The rest of the examination was normal. Brain CT-scan, echocardiography, abdominal ultrasound, and chromosomal karyoype showed normal finding. Conclusion: Hemihypertrophy has not been reported in Iraq before. A novel syndromic association consisting of congenital partial hemihypertrophy, low set ears, hypertelorism, epicanthi folds, and developmental delay is reported in this paper.

The purpose of this study was to identify and map the existence of the culinary business and to find out the model of developing a creative economy based culinary business in Kupang city, Indonesia. Choose Suzhou city’s different functional areas (industrial zone, commercial district, near the station, residential area and urban green space) to collect 55 surface soil samples and determine the zinc content of the soils by XRF and evaluate the zinc pollution level in soils with the methods of geo-accumulation index and zinc pollution index respectively. Result: The fact that the average content of Zn is beyond the soil background value in Anhui province shows soils of Suzhou city have suffered from different degrees of zinc pollution; In industrial zone, commercial district and near the station ,the zinc content of the soils is commonly higher which is mainly related to the transportation and industrial production; the evaluated results of geo-accumulative index and zinc pollution index methods show zinc pollution in soils of Suzhou city belongs to mild pollution and partial moderate pollution and the pollution is particularly serious in industrial zone, commercial district and near the station.

Careful Land and Urban planning is of extreme importance in developing countries with fast growing population like Mozambique. Environmental Strategic Assessment (SEA) and Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) are management instruments to early predict urban development potential impacts and risks, contributing to support the shaping of sustainable planning, and avoiding the social and environmental havoc of inadequate development. The objective of this paper is to present the contribution of SEA and ESIA in the planning process of a new major city in southern Mozambique, in Katembe district, facing Mozambique’s capital Maputo.The Katembe City’s environmental and social assessment process highlighted the environmental, socioeconomics and cultural particularities of this territory and identified the critical constraints for urban development. A preliminary assessment avoided major negative potential impacts, but required specific environmental and social detailed studies to be addressed in the new city’s partial urban plans. When these studies were completed the new urban detailed plans included all the necessary environmental requirements to avoid/mitigate flooding, coastal erosion, and biodiversity loss and habitat fragmentation. It is expected that this experience will encourage the wider application of sustainable urban planning in shaping new urban areas in Mozambique and other fast developing countries.

Using 68 employees as respondent, the data were collected by distributing questionnaire and analyzed by using partial least squares path modeling (PLS-SEM). Abstract (sommario):

This study used the quantitative data with an explanatory research method, while the samples were 44 employees with the status of the Civil Apparatus of Nation at the UKPBJ Regional Secretariat of Mojokerto City with details: 7 employees of the Election Working Group, 29 Procurement Officers, 8 employees of the Secretariat Section. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) based on Partial Least Square (PLS) was chosen to analyze the hypothesis. The results of this study indicated that: "i) compensation didn’t has a direct effect on employee job satisfaction at the UKPBJ Regional Secretariat of Mojokerto City"; ii) workload didn’t has a direct effect on employee job satisfaction at the Regional Secretariat UKPBJ Mojokerto City; iii) compensation didn’t has a direct effect on the performance of employees at the Regional Secretariat UKPBJ Mojokerto City; iv) workload has a direct influence on employee performance at the Regional Secretariat UKPBJ Mojokerto City; v) job satisfaction didn’t have a direct effect on employee performance at the Regional Secretariat UKPBJ Mojokerto City; vi) compensation didn’t have an indirect effect on employee performance through job satisfaction at the UKPBJ Regional Secretariat of Mojokerto City; vii) workload didn’t have an indirect effect on employee performance through job satisfaction at the UKPBJ Regional Secretariat of Mojokerto City.

Abstract (sommario):

The article provides new information on hotel prices and services in 26 European cities and investigates hotel price determinants. In a two-step estimation procedure, the authors first quantify the price effect of single room and hotel services and then examine the relationship between accommodation prices and city characteristics. They find that hotel services differ significantly from city to city and that room characteristics such as size, breakfast, air conditioning, and free-cancellation options are services for which customers are willing to pay a significant markup. Moreover, the service content of accommodation is negatively correlated with the value of the city center where the hotel is located: increasing competition on the European market seems to be producing partial price convergence via adjustment of service and quality content, so that cities with higher factor costs tend to cut service quality while “cheaper” towns improve it.

Abstract. Liuzhou is an important city of flood protection in china.Flood protection assessment for any new relational-water project is prerequisite.In order to understand the impact to river flow,a 2-D hydrodynamic model is set up,and use ADI method to solute partial differential groups.The results can be shown as fellows: Computation is fast steady and convergent by ADI method,and associated errors of model control is satisfied.The bridge pier has major impacts on river flow.Velocity change due to bridge built could lead to riverbed erosion between piers,and siltation along the upstream and downstream of the Weiyi bridge.Water level could be rised in the bridge upstream with the raised water level of about 0.08m,which might affect drained floods to a some degree.

Abstract (sommario):

This study extends and tests conceptions offered by the nutrition model of efficiency wage theory into the informal street-trading context. Three street-trader samples from 2008, 2009 and 2010 were drawn from the Johannesburg city centre. Statistical parametric and non-parametric analysis was used for a longitudinal investigation of certain associations of initial investment, or the money investments of street traders at start-up. Partial correlation analysis was used for further analysis of the 2010 sample. Findings suggest that policymaker interventions might best target traders earning under a threshold of earnings of about R230 per day. More specifically, training might offer such traders insight into how to change their product offerings to products associated with higher returns. Further, any interventions that might raise street-trader earnings above this threshold might enable such traders to obtain a positive return on capital invested in the sector.

Research study at department store in Blitar city to show if purchasing decision will be because mix from product, price, place, and promotion. With combination all can be selling good. In his 1974 testimony before the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Antitrust and Monopoly, Bradford Snell lay partial blame for the decline of mass transit in the United States on a targeted program, spearheaded by General Motors (GM), with the goal of “substitution of buses for passenger trains, streetcars and trolley buses; monopolization of bus production; and diversion of riders to automobiles.” Snell argued that General Motors and its subsidiary company National City Lines were responsible for “the destruction of more than 100 electric surface rail systems in 45 cities including New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, St. Louis, Oakland, Salt Lake City and Los Angeles.”
