Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe sharing of expertise and tacit knowing is one of the core objectives in participatory design projects. This paper focuses on the role of probes for sharing users’ tacit knowing. We will introduce the concept of “boundary objects” [22], [21] to analyse how probes facilitate perspective taking and perspective making between users and between users and researchers. In so doing, we demonstrate that probes can facilitate the sharing of users’ tacit knowing and expertise (i) by making and explicating individual users’ perspectives, (ii) by enabling participants to take each other’s perspective and make a joint perspective and (iii) by subsequently enabling the making of a joint vision on the digital design outcome. The research presented in this paper is based on an EU-funded research and innovation project in which we co-created digital neighbourhood guide with older adults. We report from our fieldwork in city 1, where we used probes as part of our participatory design practice.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose – The aim of this paper is to provide an in-depth examination of the use and non-use of text reference service among library users, seeking to evaluate the service from library users' perspective and hence enhance the professional understanding of the best practices of text reference service. Design/methodology/approach – A survey study was conducted among library users, examining user demographics, user's texting behavior, user awareness of text reference service, and users' use or non-use of the service. Findings – Findings suggest that the majority of library users have not used the service and their non-use is primarily attributed to their lack of awareness. Users who have used the service report a high degree of satisfaction and appreciate the convenience, ease of use and speediness of the service. Practical implications – The paper helps interested libraries develop an enriched view of texting's affordance as a reference service venue and thus make more informed decisions in successfully implementing the service. Originality/value – Text reference is the most recent reference development and it does not have a large body of literature. Current reports are primarily of a single library's experience and rarely investigate users' experience with text reference service. This paper fills the void in the literature by presenting a thorough study of text reference service from the user's point-of-view.

Abstract (sommario):
The analysis of the attitudes of online users plays an important role in real life and the future society, which can help us to analyze and predict the behavior of the users. The researchers also carried out a lot of related work. However, most of the previous classic methods searched the rules of the structure of the graph or the propagation path and did not consider the internal psychological dynamic mechanism of the user. In the context of big data, identifying online behavioral motivations of users through online information should be a future development trend. In this paper, we delve into the users’ internal psychological energy based on the Elaboration Likelihood Model and divide the user’s behavioral drive into the central route and the peripheral route. The degree of user’s processing of the known information and elaboration determines which route is more effective. The central route is mainly the user’s behavioral habits studied through user role theory. In the peripheral route, it calculates the influence of other users through a kind of hydromechanics algorithm—FluidRating. The final model we called ELMFluid which can express the flow of psychological energy through thermodynamics and hydromechanics. The experiments are performed using two real datasets in the end. The results show that the new model is superior to other algorithms.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose - Social media platforms have presented individuals with an opportunity to create and maintain their social relationship through the use of social media services. However, such social relationship has a negative influence on users’ interest in social media. Design/methodology - Using structural equation modeling, this study seeks to examines the effects of different social media conflicts (individual and social conflicts) on users’ psychological internal state, especially user apathetic behavior Findings - The findings confirm that, among social media conflicts, social-related conflict, especially social interaction overload has a negative effect on cognitive resonance, while individual conflict has the highest effect on cognitive dissonance. Also, cognitive dissonance has a much greater effect than cognitive resonance on user resistance, this means that users' negative perception of social media has a greater influence on their resistance. Lastly, user’s resistance was found to have a positive influence on user’s apathetic behavior. Originality/value - In other to capture social media Apathetic behavior, this study focus on social media conflict perspective, which includes social-related conflict and individual conflict, which are found to influence users’ internal states towards social media and further induce social media behavior. This study is unique because it is among the first to explore social media apathetic behavior by focusing on the influence of both external social media conflict and internal state. Also, this study proposed that social related conflict has a higher negative influence on WeChat user than individual related conflict.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose Going beyond the usual approach of measuring port performance – focusing on the efficiency of port operations – this paper aims to look into shipping lines and other port users’ perceptions on port performance. Design/methodology/approach The paper develops a framework measuring the perceptions of port users (i.e. shipping companies, shippers, etc.) on port performance. A typology of elements that shape port users’ perceptions has been developed with an eye on capturing the peculiarities of different port markets. Based on this typology, a tool to assess users’ perspectives, and subsequently evaluate, any given port has been developed. The tool provides port authorities the flexibility they need for customized approaches. The developed evaluation mechanism has been tested on a group of European seaports, and the results are presented by this study. Findings The framework and its pilot application unveil the key parameters that port users take into consideration when evaluating the effectiveness component of port performance. Moreover, the importance and evaluation ratings of specific performance parameters allow for a GAP analysis of the collected data. Research limitations/implications The paper advances scholarly and practical discussion on how of port users’ perceptions can be a valuable tool for port performance measurement. Practical implications The proposed tool can be a valuable add-on for port authorities to evaluate their performance from the port users’ point of view and take the necessary actions to improve it. Also, the tool can be used for the evaluation of a new process, infrastructure. The evaluation of port users’ perception of port performance can and must be part of a European ports observatory, as it is a set of indicators that clearly reflects the satisfaction of port users by engaging their view on port performance issues, instead of relying almost exclusively on port-generated data. Originality/value The paper develops a framework for measuring port user’s perception on port performance, which is flexible and can be applied in any port.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper is based on a survey conducted within the framework of the basic research project Collocations as a Basis for Language Description: Semantic and Temporal Perspectives (KOLOS; J6-8255). It presents a qualitative analysis of a user evaluation of the interface of the Collocations Dictionary of Modern Slovene (CDS). It discusses an alternative perspective—the user's point of view—on problematic aspects of individual dictionary features, which require further lexicographic analysis and discussion. The collocations user study presents a model of the process of user evaluation; its findings are significant primarily for determining problems encountered by users. They also serve as a useful basis for methodology improvements in future, comparable lexicographic user studies and analyses.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In the past decade, there has been a rapid advance in Virtual Reality (VR) technology. Key to the user’s VR experience are multimodal interactions involving all senses. The human brain must integrate real-time vision, hearing, vestibular and proprioceptive inputs to produce the compelling and captivating feeling of immersion in a VR environment. A serious problem with VR is that users may develop symptoms similar to motion sickness, a malady called cybersickness. At present the underlying cause of cybersickness is not yet fully understood. Cybersickness may be due to a discrepancy between the sensory signals which provide information about the body’s orientation and motion: in many VR applications, optic flow elicits an illusory sensation of motion which tells users that they are moving in a certain direction with certain acceleration. However, since users are not actually moving, their proprioceptive and vestibular organs provide no cues of self-motion. These conflicting signals may lead to sensory discrepancies and eventually cybersickness. Here we review the current literature to develop a conceptual scheme for understanding the neural mechanisms of cybersickness. We discuss an approach to cybersickness based on sensory cue integration, focusing on the dynamic re-weighting of visual and vestibular signals for self-motion.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose Inspired by an efficacy debate, this paper aims to understand to what extent do entrepreneurs value business accelerators and what contributes to this value. And as entrepreneurs consider accelerators to be a viable alternative to traditional business incubators, the research seeks to compare these startup support options. Design/methodology/approach Guided by resource-based theory, the researchers constructed a variance model and analyzed it using quantitative methods based upon data collected from 205 accelerators users as well as 66 incubator users for comparison. Findings Results indicate that the accelerator users find the programs to be very valuable for improving their business outcomes. Moreover, the users feel the program experience to be valuable regardless of whether their businesses ultimately survive. Knowledge- and culture-related resources contribute significantly to users’ perceptions of value. Findings indicate notable differences in the perceptions of accelerator versus incubator users. Research limitations/implications The research contributes to the ongoing academic debate concerning the efficacy of accelerators and provides a model for predicting user value. The research is limited to the USA. Practical implications Research serves as a practical guide for prospective accelerator users, as well as provides valuable insights to accelerator administrators and marketers for enhancing their programs. Originality/value The study uniquely provides a user’s perspective and highlights distinct differences in the perceptions between accelerators and incubators users.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose In an era where companies shift a part of their marketing budget to support their social media presence, very little is known about the antecedents and effects of participant identification in a social media community. This paper aims to examine the antecedents of community identification in a Facebook company-managed brand community, for inactive members, using the uses and gratification theory. Brand community identification is also expected to lead to higher levels of brand loyalty for these members. Design/methodology/approach This research reports the results of a quantitative with survey data from 389 members of a variety of different official Facebook pages. Findings The results reveal that inactive members of Facebook pages can be influenced to act in a way that is beneficial for a company. Perceived human and information value of the brand Facebook page lead members to identify with a brand community and identification is a strong predictor of loyalty to the brand. Practical implications This paper provides suggestions to managers on the development of brand community value that can increase brand community identification and loyalty of apparently inactive brand community members. Originality/value By showing that brand community identification and loyalty exist for users with low activity levels, this research challenges the widely accepted idea that only highly active members are valuable in online brand communities. Specifically, it reveals the most important motivations for these members to identify with the community and be loyal to the brand.

Abstract (sommario):
Value co-creation is created with the users when they consume or use the product or services. Value co-creation is exclusive among individuals but can influence the user's behaviour in using a product or service and in the users' cognitive space. E-learning as a service platform should deliver value that fulfils users’ needs. Thus, it is essential to identify users' critical features such as forums, videos, and rewards (referring to frequently or most used attributes) on the e-learning platform from the users' view and not the developer's perspective. Students as the primary users of e-learning are essential in creating and extracting users' co-creation values. This paper aims to identify the critical attributes and values from vocational students' perspectives using the means-end chain (MEC) methodology. The relationship among these elements would build a ladder and lead to the purpose of the research. Data were gathered from 151 vocational students using the MEC model and hard laddering – Association pattern technique (APT) technique and developed the summary implication matrix (SIM) and hierarchical value map (HVM). The results showed that students consider eight valuable values, with five dominant values: sense of accomplishment, helpful, self-fulfilment, excitement, and fun and enjoyment of life. Attributes such as games and quizzes, videos, chat forums, rewards, widgets, and apps contribute to co-creation values. Besides, vocational students tend to prefer simulation exercises and live streaming features. The significance of this study is to help identify the co-creation value based on critical elements on an e-learning platform. Building an e-learning platform based on the user's point of view is getting the users to use the system. Further, valuable insight into values may provide input for the design of the e-learning model from the perspective of value.

Abstract (sommario):
Today’s technology-driven human-society(s) country-wise are counted more than ever before where UAE-society is no exception. Tech-users here compete for comparative time-saving options for marginalizing operating costs. It has resulted in huge data usages, a high number of users & devices, which has attracted criminals for taking advantage, which is called cybercrime. Addressing cybercrime, the UAE, like many countries, is not out of control by-laws. However, laws like cybercrime for its society are not always for absolutely eliminating the crime. Thus, besides cybercrime law in place, UAE needs a piecemeal approach in practice where one department may vary from approaches of other-department. With awareness about risky online behaviors & options, tech-users as defenders are needed to invest their efforts. This study has laid out the foundation of the proposal, Akim’s Model-2021, using the Theory of Consumer Choice & Behaviors and Welfare Analysis. Tech-user’s actual utility-received is the sum of utility-received from awareness & own-effort and utility-received from cybercrime-law. Any changes to services received from joint efforts may risk tech-user, to be a victim. Welfare analysis shows tech user's actions - awareness & own-effort, besides cybercrime-law can create, Net Social-gain, which largely depends on tech user's actions. Tech-user’s economic surplus is greater than government expenses for implementation of cybercrime law in UAE. Net-loss to the UAE is the sum of deadweight loss and net-loss to tech producers for underutilized resources.

ABSTRACT Objective: The objective of this study was to raise the reasons pointed out by the crack users as triggers for the drug consumption relapse and consequently offer some sort of help, which might come to the aid of those users. Methods: The present study is a qualitative study, using in-depth interviews and criteria-based sampling, following 42 crack cocaine users. Point of theoretical saturation was used to define the sample size. Data were analyzed using the content analysis technique. Results: The analysis of the content from the respondents’ speeches resulted in different reasons pointed as triggers of relapse, those ones being clustered in categories. User Related Reason (UR), Drug Related Reason (DR), Environment Related Reason (ER). Conclusions: Relapse is a common phenomenon among crack users, considering the reasons that lead to its occurrence are the same from people's daily routine, making its management very tough. Interpersonal relationship problems and the consequent frustration have been the most mentioned reasons as relapse triggers, causing a rupture in the paradigm in which the causes would be focused on the drug. The possibility that the user gets to know and recognize their emotional vulnerabilities and weaknesses could be of great help in relapse prevention.

Abstract (sommario):
In view of the change in communication circumstances caused by the explosive development of technology, new spheres of expression of attitudes, ideas, opinions and emotions have been opened. In a new communication reality, the dominant place belongs to social media, which is also related to interactive media and digital media that depend on user participation. The degree and ways of participation differ between various social media, but what they have in common is that they offer users the opportunity to create content, react to the existing ones, as well as further distribute and comment. The aim of the paper is to examine the frequency of different types of interactivity on social media, the motives for interactivity, as well as the perception of its importance from the user’s viewpoint. The research was conducted on a sample of 350 students at the University of Niš. A questionnaire was used as a method of data collection. Also, the research showed that in spite of the intensive checking of social media, the respondents do not often resort to interactivity, neither with their friends’ posts nor with media content and they do not find the possibility of interactivity particularly important. Along with checking and reading, the most common type of interactivity is liking, while leaving a comment is minimally applied. The respondents mostly resort to liking media content on social media only if they are related to the social issues they consider important (23.14%) or to support somebody’s position (21.71%).

Abstract (sommario):
Decreasing the impact of educational buildings on the environment is a primary concern of the sustainable building movement. However, limited research has centered on improving educational building sustainability from users’ perspectives. This study aims to determine an overall user perspective satisfaction scale (OUPS) for post-secondary educational buildings, determine the factors and sub-factors that affect users’ perspectives, and create a building sustainability platform for evaluating user satisfaction. The main goal of the developed model is to offer facility managers the current users’ perspectives on post-secondary educational buildings to improve sustainability from users’ perspectives. The results revealed a significant influence of thermal comfort (40%) and aesthetics (22%) on users’ perspectives. The developed model was validated by experts working in the facility management field and they acknowledged it as having good potential. This work first utilized the Fuzzy Analytic Network Process (FANP) modelling technique to determine weights for each factor and sub-factor and then employed the fuzzy expert system to develop an OUPS. Questionnaire responses and interviews with facility managers and users were used to develop these models for a case study of the M.B. building at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec.

Abstract (sommario):
Internet of Things (IoT) accelerating growth exposes many unsecured issues related to the design and the usage of network integrated devices. This paper presents a fuzzy evaluation method, based on both IOT hardware/software developers’ and users’ knowledge, creating an novel model to aid correctness actions over security procedures, in order to increase the IOT safeness usage. This method combines both the developer’s and user’s perspectives, creating an integrated adaptive evaluation attached to the Information Technology security standards and best practices guidelines. The proposed evaluation method is divided by categories, each one composed of security control clauses and their corresponding action recommendation. The user perspective of such evaluation method was applied into a service company, and the developer perspective was defined by an IoT device manufacturer. The obtained results have shown that the evaluation method enhances both the manufacturer security awareness and the IOT users experience in the improvement of security IoT issues.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose As an increasing number of users have acquired information across the web and mobile platforms for social question and answering (Q&A), it is of interest to explore whether there are differences in social Q&A usages between the two platforms. The purpose of this paper is to compare web and mobile platforms of a social Q&A service from the user’s perspective in terms of three dimensions, namely, demographics, individual-based constructs, and information-based constructs. Design/methodology/approach Because Zhihu.com is one of the most popular social Q&A sites in China, the authors used online questionnaires to investigate its users’ perceptions of these three dimensions. From January to March 2016, the authors obtained 278 valid responses in total through snowball and convenient sampling. Collected data are analyzed through descriptive statistics and inferential statistics. Findings The results indicate that there exist significant differences between web users and mobile users on Zhihu.com in terms of gender, affinity, and information seeking. More specifically, compared to the male users, more female users rely on the mobile platform to access the information service; mobile users perceive higher affinity with Zhihu.com than web users; and mobile users perceive higher information-seeking intention than web users do. Originality/value Regarding the theoretical aspect, this study proposes a conceptual framework for comparison between the web and mobile platforms of social Q&A from the user’s perspective. Regarding the practical aspect, the comparative results of this study could give social Q&A service providers useful information about users’ differences between web and mobile platforms of social Q&A services.

Abstract (sommario):
This study aims to determine how users respond to the use of social media during online learning after the COVID-19 pandemic from the perspective of uncertainty reduction theory. This study uses a phenomenological research method, where data collection is carried out by means of Focus Group Discussion (FGD), which was conducted twice on 15 users of online learning applications. Through this research, it is known that the user's response from the compulsion in using the online learning model is that the subject tends to feel mostly bored, difficult to discipline, tendency to be lazy, and has the proclivity to be dishonest. In addition, in terms of emotional connection, teachers and students do not have a good bond, which is far different when using the offline learning modality. The majority of users prefer to utilize the offline learning system when the pandemic ends. One person prefers to use a hybrid system which is a combination of online and offline learning method.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The gathering of data about oneself (such as running speed, pulse, breathing rate, food consumption, etc.) is rapidly becoming more popular, and has lead to the catch phrase “Quantified Self” (QS). While this trend creates opportunities both for individuals and for society, it also creates risks, due to the data’s personal and often sensitive nature. Countering these risks, while keeping the benefits of QS services, is a task both for the legal system and for the technical community. However, it should also take users’ expectations into account. We therefore analyze the legal situation of QS services based on European law and the privacy policies of some major service providers to clarify the practical consequences for users. We present the result of a study concerning the users’ views on privacy, revealing a conflict between the user’s expectations and the providers’ practices. To help resolve the conflict, we discuss how existing and future privacy-enhancing technologies can avoid the risks associated with QS services.

Abstract (sommario):
BPS-Statistics Indonesia, as an official data producer, puts data quality as a top priority. Public acceptance and trust in data reflect data reliability which is one of the data quality indicators. The existing survey that collects user acceptance, trust, and perspective to data produced by BPS can only reach data users in a limited number. Perspectives from a large number of data users cannot be captured. This research aims to build an application that collects and provides users’ perspectives and sentiment to official statistics sourced from online news. One feature in this application is Named Entity Recognition, which extracts public perspectives in entities such as names, organizations, statistical indicators, quotes or opinions, etc. This application objectively measures the sentiment of news discussing or citing statistical indicators. This application also facilitates BPS to do social network analysis to understand the relationships between fellow data users for each statistical indicator. The implicit goal is to effectively provide insights into how frequently society uses and refers to statistical indicators produced by BPS in any domain and their perspective on data. All models and features provided in this application have been evaluated based on standard performance metrics.
