Abstract (sommario):

Temperature rise due to climate change have an impact on various ecosystems, including coastal ecosystems. Temperature rise also affects plant metabolism, such as carbon uptake. Macroalgae is the dominant community in the intertidal zone, and potential to absorb carbon. A series of experiments on several dominant macroalgae species from the south coast of West Java have been done to see the effect of temperature regime on carbon content. The treatment of temperatures of 24, 27, 30, and 33 °C was carried out for 72 hours against 6 macroalgae species representing Chlorophycae, Phaeophycea and Rhodophyceae to investigate carbon content. The results showed that the macroalgae of Phaeophyceae division showed higher carbon content in comparison to the macroalgae of the other divisions. The temperature that significantly affects chloropyll was 33 oC against all the species being tested.

Abstract (sommario):

The brown alga Silvetia siliquosa (Tseng et Chang) Serrão, Cho, Boo & Brawly is endemic to the Yellow-Bohai Sea and southwestern Korea. It is increasingly endangered due to habitat loss and excessive collection. Here, we sequenced the mitochondrial (mt) and chloroplast (cp) genomes of S. siliquosa. De novo assembly showed that the mt-genome was 36,036 bp in length, including 38 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 26 tRNAs, and 3 rRNAs, and the cp-genome was 124,991 bp in length, containing 139 PCGs, 28 tRNAs, and 6 rRNAs. Gene composition, gene number, and gene order of the mt-genome and cp-genome were very similar to those of other species in Fucales. Phylogenetic analysis revealed a close genetic relationship between S. siliquosa and F. vesiculosus, which diverged approximately 8 Mya (5.7–11.0 Mya), corresponding to the Late Miocene (5.3–11.6 Ma). The synonymous substitution rate of mitochondrial genes of phaeophycean species was 1.4 times higher than that of chloroplast genes, but the cp-genomes were more structurally variable than the mt-genomes, with numerous gene losses and rearrangements among the different orders in Phaeophyceae. This study reports the mt- and cp-genomes of the endangered S. siliquosa and improves our understanding of its phylogenetic position in Phaeophyceae and of organellar genomic evolution in brown algae.

Abstract (sommario):

One year qualitative and quantitative study of communities of three major taxonomic groups has been carried out at test panles placed in the upper infarlittoral zone of coastal area of Vela Luka Bay, Croatia. A list of 44 taxa was recorded. <em>Chaetomorpha </em>sp., <em>Ulva </em>sp., <em>Fosliella farinosa</em>, <em>Sphacelaria cirrosa</em>, <em>Polysiphonia scopulorum </em>were the most frequent dominant taxa. Among 27 algal taxa with noticeable presence only three were classified as ESG (Ecological State Groups) I. Low diversity and species richness together with massive presence of the green algae (as <em>Ulva </em>sp.) and negligible presence of ESG I taxa, may lead to erroneous conclusion that Vela Luka Bay is eutrophicated area. Low values of biomass and <em>R/P </em>(Rhodophyceae by Phaeophyceae ratio) Index together with dominance of Phaeophyta also support conclusion that there is no negative impact of nutrient enrichment on macrophyta fouling community in Vela Luka Bay.

Macroalgae are multicellular plants that do not produce seeds or flowers. All macroalgae are multicellular and do not have a specialized body structure and do not have reproductive mechanism like terrestrial plants. Macroalgae is divided into 3 groups namely Chlorophyta (green algae), Rhodophyta (red algae), and Phaeophyceae (brown algae). Green algae and red algae belong to the Plantae kingdom with green algae (Chlorophyta) and included in the Subkingdom Viridiplantae and red algae (Rhodophyta) into the Biliphyta subkingdom. Brown algae (Phaeophyta) belong to the Chromista kingdom. Based on the research, macroalgae found in Drini and Krakal Gunungkidul are green algae, red algae and brown algae. Green algae found and identified are Anadyomene plicata C. Agardh, Chaetomorpha antennina (Bory) Kṻtzing, Chaetomorpha linum (O.F. The use of brown-macroalgae (Phaeophyceae) as an alginate source is very broad, covering the food and non-food industry, because of that it is necessary to know the safety of these natural resources, one of which is safe from heavy metal contamination. The purpose of this study was to determine heavy metals concentrations accumulated in several types of Phaeophyceae (brown macroalgae) as an alginate source from Malang Rapat waters, Bintan. The method used was descriptive non-experimental. The determination of the location of sampling was done by purposive sampling method. Samples were taken through free collection, identified species and measured of metal contamination concentrations for As, Cd, and Pb. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that Phaeophyceae found in Malang Rapat waters were Turbinaria conoides, Sargassum aquifolium, Padina australis, Hormophysa cuneiformis with each metal concentration contamination of As 13.95 to 23.30 µg.g-1 dry weight; Cd from 0.33 to 1.08 µg.g-1 dry weight and Pb from 4.72 to 9.92 µg.g-1 dry weight. This study showed that all metal contamination ranges in all Phaeophyceae were on the verge of the maximum limit set by the National Standardization Agency of Indonesia Indonesian (SNI) No 7387 of 2009 and National Agency of Drug and Food Control of RI (BPOM) Regulation No 5 of 2018 for dried macroalgae product so that Phaeophyceae from Malang Rapat waters - Bintan was not safe to be used as raw material for alginate source or other processed products of brown-macroalgae.

RESUMO O presente estudo tem por objetivo contribuir para o estudo de caracteres sub-celulares que poderão ser utilizados na taxonomia das Phaeophyceae filamentosas, fornecendo dados sobre a estrutura e ultra-estrutura das células vegetativas e do estágio reprodutivo plurilocular de H. mitchelliae. Para tanto, estudos de microscopia de luz e eletrônica de transmissão foram realizados. As células vegetativas e reprodutivas de H. mitchelliae são uninucleadas, revestidas por uma parede celulósica, outros polissacarídeos e proteínas. A presença de um núcleo por célula, a organização dos tilacóides nos cloroplastos, formando bandas com três tilacóides, dispostos longitudinalmente ao eixo maior da organela e ausência de tilacóide no pirenóide foram similares a outras Phaeophyceae. H. mitchelliae também exibiu características ultra-estruturais que estão geralmente associadas a outras espécies, de ordens menos avançadas de Phaeophyceae como a presença de um proeminente pirenóide, dictiossomos perinucleares e plasmodesmos. A morfologia e a organização dos cloroplastos, bem como a presença ou ausência de pirenóide são características importantes dentro das Phaeophyceae. A formação de um novo pirenóide, em estágio de diferenciação, foi observada nos cloroplastos das células vegetativas. Ambas as células apresentaram núcleo com um grande nucléolo, sugerindo uma alta atividade metabólica. Muitos corpos osmiofílicos, os fisóides, foram vistos no citoplasma das células vegetativas e reprodutivas. As células da estrutura plurilocular madura de H. mitchelliae diferiram das células vegetativas por apresentar tamanho reduzido, citoplasma denso e desprovidas de vacúolos.

Abstract This paper reports microhabitat preferences of Phaeophyta from the shore platform, Dwarka, Gujarat coast, India. Macroalgae distribution was tagged with shore platform’s zonal morphology. Macroalgae (Phaeophyta) were surveyed based on systematic random sampling for two years (April, 2013 to March, 2015). Total 21 species of Phaeophyta were identified through intensive fieldwork/in situ survey based on Line Intercept Transect and Quadrate based methods. Five groups of Phaeophyta were identified as per their zonal preference on the shore platform. On family level, most of the Sargassaceae showed a ubiquitous distribution on the shore platform while Dictyotaceae showed preference towards the subtidal and intertidal mixed zone of the shore platform.

Tulisan ini dibuat untuk mengetahui potensi, faktor pembatas, dan pengolahan rumput laut coklat (Phaeophyceae) sebagai pakan ayam petelur. Rumput laut coklat (Phaeophyceae) adalah rumput laut yang mengandung pigmen klorofil a, karotin, xanthofil dan fukosantin, pigmen yang dominan adalah fukosantin yang menutupi warna lainnya dan menyebabkan rumput laut ini kelihatan berwarna coklat. Rumput laut coklat memiliki potensi sebagai bahan pakan ayam petelur karena ketersediaan yang melimpah, tidak bersaing dengan kebutuhan manusia, mengandung zat-zat nutrisi, tidak bersifat toksik, kaya asam lemak omega 3, mengandung pigmen fukosantin, alginat dan fukoidan. Faktor pembatas penggunaan rumput laut ini, yaitu 1) Kandungan nutrisi dan kualitas: alginat tinggi, protein rendah, dan energi rendah; 2) Kandungan anti nutrisi: kadar garam tinggi dan phlorotannin; 3) Penanganan dan pengolahan: membutuhkan berbagai pengolahan khusus sebelum digunakan sebagai pakan ternak. Faktor-faktor pembatas tersebut dapat diatasi dengan perlakuan fisik (pencucian, pengeringan, autoklaf, perebusan dan freezing), fermentasi dan penambahan enzim dalam pakan sebagai upaya untuk meningkatkan ketersediaan zat nutrisi dan mendetoksifikasi senyawa antinutrisi. Rumput laut coklat (Phaeophyceae) memiliki potensi sebagai bahan pakan penyusun ransum ayam petelur.

Abstract Seaweeds cover a wide range of applications, e.g. as food supplements, in animal feed, as biofuels or as sources of bioactive compounds. The Greek coast in the East Mediterranean is rich in various seaweeds that remain unexploited because their chemical and nutritional content has not yet been characterized. In the present study, eight seaweeds belonging to the Rhodophyta, Ochrophyta (class Phaeophyceae) and Chlorophyta were biochemically characterized and evaluated as potential food sources. Total polyphenol content, antioxidant activity, fatty acids and elemental composition were measured. Acanthophora nayadiformis, Ceramium sp. (Rhodophyta), Codium fragile (Chlorophyta), Cystoseira foeniculacea and Gongolaria barbata (formerly Cystoseira barbata) (Ochrophyta, Phaeophyceae) had the highest phenolic content and strongest antioxidant activity. Both brown and red seaweeds were rich in minerals, with G. barbata, Dictyopteris polypodioides (formerly Dictyopteris membranacea) (Chlorophyta, Phaeophyceae) and A. nayadiformis being the richest in macro- and microelements. The low Na/K ratio in most seaweeds (0.03–3.49) and the high iron content of red and brown algae (1.01–52.40 mg 100 g−1 of wet tissue) make algal consumption an attractive option. Chlorophyta and Phaeophyceae had the lowest n-6/n-3 PUFA ratios, with α-linolenic acid being the most abundant n-3 PUFA. The green algae Codium fragile and Ulva lactuca had the highest oleic and docosahexaenoic acid content, respectively. Finally, Rhodophyta were the highest producers of eicosapentaenoic acid. The findings confirmed the nutritional value of all seaweeds, highlighting brown seaweeds Cystoseira foeniculacea, G. barbata, and D. polypodioides as potential sources for food supplements and candidate species for seaweed cultivation in Mediterranean coastal waters.

Abstract (sommario):

Se realizó una investigación bibliográfica y de herbario de Phaeophyceae citada para el litoral de Michoacán, México. Se añadieron datos obtenidos de muestreos realizados en 11 localidades de 2006 a 2014, con el objetivo de contribuir al conocimiento de las Phaeophyceae de la región. Se determinaron 52 taxones (49 especies y 3 variedades), 27 son nuevos registros para Michoacán, se citan por primera vez: Streblonema anomalum y Ectocarpus taoniae para la costa del Pacífico de México. El número más alto de taxones se registró en La Majahuita (27) y el más bajo en San Telmo (2). Las familias mejor representadas fueron Dictyotaceae (15 taxones) y Chordariaceae y Ectocarpaceae (5 cada una). De 25 especies registradas en la bibliografía, se corroboró la presencia de 12. Con los nuevos registros el número de feofíceas se incrementó a 52 taxones. La lista florística se acompaña con datos de presencia, estacionalidad, estado fenológico, hábitat y referencias bibliográficas. Se comparó la riqueza específica entre las estaciones climáticas de lluvias y de secas durante el periodo de estudio, encontrándose el número más alto de taxones en la época de secas. El litoral de Michoacán tiene la riqueza específica más alta de Phaeophyceae, al compararse con Nayarit, Colima, Jalisco, Guerrero, Oaxaca y Chiapas.

Abstract (sommario):

Phaeophyta merupakan salah satu kelompok makroalga yang tersebar melimpah di zona intertidal. Alga makrobentik ini memiliki struktur talus yang terdiri atas bagian holdfast, stipe, dan blade. Kelompok tersebut memiliki kandungan warna yang disebut pigmen fukosantin. Metode yang digunakan adalah road sampling dengan melakukan penyusuran seluruh area sampling menggunakan GPS (Global Positioning System). Jenis-jenis alga yang ditemukan diidentifikasi dan dideskripsikan secara morfologi. Analisis komposisi jenis dilakukan secara deskripsi kualitatif . Hasil yang diperoleh yaitu terdapat empat jenis Phaeophyta yang terdiri atas Sargassum sp., Padina australis, Spatoglossum sp., dan Turbinaria ornata. A revised checklist of marine benthic algae of the Commander Islands (Russian Pacific) is presented. It is based on the authors’ field collections. The list of algae of the area totals to 187 species (36 Chlorophyta, 38 Ochrophyta, class Phaeophyceae, and 113 Rhodophyta) of these 44 species (9 Chlorophyta, 8 Ochrophyta, class Phaeophyceae, and 27 Rhodophyta) are added to the previous checklists (Selivanova and Zhigadlova, 1997). We also confirm the presence of 5 species on the Islands that were absent in our earlier material but were recorded by other authors (Phycodrys amchitkensis, Mastocarpus papillatus, Lithothamnion sonderi, Odonthalia dentata, and Pleonosporium vancouverianum). The species list of the newly recorded algae contains information on their ecology, fertility, and distribution. The algal taxonomy and nomenclature are updated with new world data.

AbstractThe new lichenicolous Llimoniella phaeophysciae, known from Italy, Spain and the USA (Arizona) on Phaeophyscia, resembles Geltingia associata in the subcylindrical asci with uniseriate, shortly ellipsoid ascospores, but is distinguished by several important characters. Gelatinopsis acarosporicola, G. heppiae, Geltingia groenlandiae and Psorotichia terricola (syn. nov. Gelatinopsis leptogii) are considered to be congeneric with L. phaeophysciae, although some of them have elongate clavate and not subcylindrical asci and they are consequently combined in Llimoniella. These five species are distinguished from Llimoniella s.str. by a different excipular and epihymenial pigmentation not reacting with KOH and are treated as the informal L. phaeophysciae group. The new L. placopsidis is described from Placopsis in New Zealand. More complex pigmentation patterns are documented for L. pyrenulae and L. ramalinae. A revised key to the species of Llimoniella is presented. Gelatinopsis ericetorum and G. roccellae are combined in Rhymbocarpus. A redescription of Geltingia associata is given.

The study investigated the Phaeophyceae during the year 2019 at sixteen sampling sites representative for Cham islands. Specimens were collected by scuba diving, snorkelling and walking at the upper tidal zone in both dry and rainy seasons. Twenty-five species of the Phaeophyceae identified for Cham islands from four orders, four families and eleven genera. The Sargassaceae family is the most abundant species composition, followed by Dictyotaceae, Scytosiphonaceae and Asteronemataceae family. In the six islands surveyed, Hon Lao has the highest diversity with 19 species recorded; Hon Dai, Hon Tai, Hon Kho and Hon Mo island recorded from 10 to 14 species, and the lowest diversity is at the Hon La island with 8 species. Ten species Canistrocarpus cervicornis, Dictyota spinulosa, Lobophora obscura, Lobophora variegata, Pandina minor, Sargassum bicorne, Sargassum herklotsii, Sargassum parvifolium, Turbinaria conoides, Asteronema breviarticulatum reported as new records for the marine flora of Cham islands.

We report here the results of a survey of the phytobenthos of Boipeba Island, Bahia state, Brazil. Samples were collected during three periods (July 2007 and March and December 2012) in the intertidal regions of offshore reefs near the beaches at Ponta dos Castelhanos, Bainema, Moreré, and Tassimirim. A total of 159 taxa were identified: Rhodophyta (83), Chlorophyta (52), Heterokontophyta/Phaeophyceae (21), Cyanobacteria (02), and Magnoliophyta (01). The most representative orders were Ceramiales (Rhodophyta), Bryopsidales (Chlorophyta), and Dictyotales (Heterokontophyta/Phaeophyceae) with 30, 23 and 15 taxa respectively; vouchers were deposited in the herbarium of the Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana (HUEFS). This work adds 150 new taxa to those already known for Boipeba Island, including Nitophyllum punctatum (Stackh. in With.) Grev., whose occurrence is now confirmed for the coast of Bahia. The number of species identified in this study was elevated in comparison with previous phytobenthos studies undertaken on Brazilian islands.

16 major and trace elements content of 8 edible seaweeds were determined by ICP-AES after wet digestion to compare the nutritional value and pollution level between Cyanophyta (blue), Chlorophyta (green), Rhodophyta (red), Phaeophyta (brown) species. The concentration changes of trace elements in seaweeds had some differences from four species, but the concentration distribution tendency of trace elements was similar. Major elements ( K,Ca,Na,Mg,P) and functional elements (Fe,Mn,Zn,Cu,Se,Cr) were abundant in Cyanophyta (blue) and Phaeophyta (brown) species, these two species, however, accumulated Al selectively. The pollution levels of toxic elements like As, Pb and Hg in most seaweeds from this study demonstrated that the cultivation aquatic eco- environments were relatively safe. In this paper, Nostoc commune var. Flagelliforme (Cyanophyta) abounds in Fe, Zn and major elements, moreover the concentration of potentially toxic elements were relatively low. The second was Phaeophyta species, especially Laminaria japonica Aresch . Porphyra yezoensis Ueda (Rhodophyta) shows the lowest nutritional value.

Non-conventional extraction of bioactive metabolites could provide sustainable alternative techniques to preserve the potency of antioxidants and antiviral compounds extracted from macro-algae. In this paper, we first reviewed the antioxidant and antiviral potential of the active metabolites that exist in the three known macro-algae classes; Phaeophyceae, Rhodophyceae, and Chlorophyceae, and a comparison between their activities is discussed. Secondly, a review of conventional and non-conventional extraction methods is undertaken. The review then focused on identifying the optimal extraction method of sulphated polysaccharide from macro-algae that exhibits both antiviral and antioxidant activity. The review finds that species belonging to the Phaeophyceae and Rhodophceae classes are primarily potent against herpes simplex virus, followed by human immunodeficiency virus and influenza virus. At the same time, species belonging to Chlorophyceae class are recorded by most of the scholars to have antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus 1. Additionally, all three macro-algae classes exhibit antioxidant activity, the potency of which is a factor of the molecular structure of the bioactive metabolite as well as the extraction method applied.

An ecological study was conducted on species composition, vertical distribution and monthly variations of marine macro algae along the Visakhapatnam coast, Bay of Bengal, India between May 2013 and April 2014. A total of 48 species was recorded, 18 species belonging to phylum Chlorophyta, nine species to Phaeophyta and 21 species to Rhodophyta. The phylum Rhodophyta was the most dominant group with the highest number of species composition (44.0%) followed by Chlorophyta (37.0%) and Phaeophyta (19.0%). Monthly seaweed distribution data showed the dominance of Rhodophyta members (43.75%) during November to February, when compared to that of Chlorophyta and Phaeophyta members. In addition, the data also revealed that the months from June to August contributed favourable conditions for the growth of Chlorophyta members (29.16%) when compared to that of other months. The present study has recorded two new species (Ulva lactuca and Enteromorpha intestinalis). Thirty-five species once recorded are absent from the Visakhapatnam coast. These changes are attributed to the impact of marine water pollution and climate change.

We present new data on cytology and karyology of representatives of the genus Alaria from the eastern Kamchatka. Since, despite morphological differences, taxa previously reported from this region as A. angusta and A. marginata turned out to be genetically identical and conspecific to A. esculenta, we substantiated their independence as intraspecific taxa, A. esculenta – f. angustifolia and f. latifolia, respectively. Cytochemical studies showed that different forms of A. esculenta have different oligosaccharide composition on the surface of oocytes and female gametophytes, i. e. during life cycle stages that ensure maintenance of species heterozygosity and, possibly, reproductive isolation of its forms. In Asian region, A. esculenta has a haploid chromosome number, which is half from that recorded from the Atlantic and Arctic regions, 14 instead of 28, suggesting that northwest Pacific is the center of A. esculenta origin and its settlement in the World Ocean.

From May to October 2017 seaweeds were identified in the field and laboratory from 20 sites around Brier Island, Nova Scotia. While most sites were intertidal rocky shores, there were one small salt marsh and one eelgrass bed included in the study, and some subtidal sampling was conducted utilizing SCUBA and snorkeling. The Brier Island seaweeds comprised 152 species and varieties of which 62 were Rhodophyta, 44 were Chlorophyta, 44 were Phaeophyceae, and two species were Xanthophyceae. Three species were new records for eastern Canada: Colaconema bonne- maisoniae, C. endophyticum, and Elachista stellaris, all were pre- viously recorded from New England. The flora included eight non- native species of which Colpomenia peregrina and Bonnemaisonia hami- fera (both gametophytic and tetrasporophytic stages) were abundant at two or more sites, and the invasive Codium fragile subsp. fragile was recorded based on a single drift specimen. With 150 species and varieties of seaweeds, Brier Island has the highest species richness of a limited area of eastern Canada. The Cheney floristic index at 2.4 is higher than comparable areas, and suggests that many additional brown algae remain to be found.Keywords: Chlorophyta, Colaconema, Bay of Fundy, Brier Island, Phaeophyceae, Rhodophyta, seaweeds

Makroalga laut merupakan alga makroskopis yang dapat dijumpai di daerah intertidal kawasan pesisir Gunungkidul D.I. Yogyakarta, terdiri dari makroalga hijau (Chlorophyceae), coklat (Phaeophyceae), dan merah (Florideophyceae). Kawasan pesisir Gunungkidul terdiri dari deretan pantai dengan berbagai tipologi sehingga keanekaragaman jenis makroalga lautnya akan berbeda pada tipologi pantai yang berbeda. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keanekaragaman dan komposisi spesies makroalga laut pada tipologi pantai yang berbeda di kawasan pesisir Gunungkidul D.I. Yogyakarta. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan pada bulan September 2019 hingga Februari 2020 menggunakan metode purposive sampling, kemudian dilakukan pengawetan awetan basah dan identifikasi di Laboratorium Sistematika Tumuhan Fakultas Biologi UGM. Perbandingan komposisi spesies dianalisis berdasarkan Indeks Kesamaan Sorensen. Dari hasil penelitian yang dilakukan didapatkan 37 spesies yang tergolong kedalam 28 genus, 19 family dan 10 ordo, Makroalga laut di wilayah pesisir Gunungkidul di dominasi oleh kelas Florideophyceae dengan persentase kehadiran spesies 43,37% (18 spesies); kelas Chlorophyceae 28,95% (10 spesies); dan Phaeophyceae 23,68% (9 spesies). Komposisi spesies makroalga laut di kawasan pesisir Gunungkidul memiliki tingkat kesamaan yang tinggi (>0,5) walaupun hidup di tipologi pantai yang berbeda. Persamaan tertinggi ditemukan pada makroalga laut yang hidup di pantai dengan tipologi subaerial dan marine deposition coast.

Abstract (sommario):

An updated checklist of the brown seaweeds (Phaeophyceae) of Greece is provided, based on both literature records and new collections. The total number of species and infraspecific taxa currently accepted is 107. The occurrence of each taxon in the North Aegean, South Aegean and Ionian Seas is given. In addition, 17 taxa pending confirmation of their presence, 11 excludenda and 8 inquirenda are briefly discussed.

Abstract (sommario):

The myrionematoid brown alga Ulonema rhizophorum Foslie (Phaeophyceae, Chordariaceae) is reported for the first time from the Mediterranean Sea. This species was collected growing as an epiphyte on Ulva sp. from the Dardanelles (Sea of Marmara, Turkey) in the midlittoral zone. Ulonema rhizophorum is characterized by downwardly produced rhizoids from the basal system. A key to the Mediterranean related genera of Ulonema is provided.
