Allegretti, Stanislao. "Exaiphnès chez Platon : un temps hors du temps : génèse et fortune d'un concept." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019AIXM0539.
Testo completoThe main purpose of the thesis is to identify and fill some gaps that are regularly found in the analysis of the Platonic concept of ἐξαίφνης. The word ἐξαίφνης, which appears 36 times in the Platonic dialogues, has primarily been examined and discussed in relation to what is said in Parmenides and, more rarely, in Symposium, Republic and Seventh Letter. However, as is known, the word is also found in Gorgias, Cratylus, Theaetetus, Statesman and Laws. Moreover, it is worth noting that a history of criticism about the concept of ἐξαίφνης has never been provided, mainly due to the chronological and interpretive difficulties relating to Parmenides. This absence brought on a fragmentation and discontinuity in the study of the concept and it often prompted specialists to see in this notion a secondary or imprecise aspect of the Platonic theory. Regardless of the correctness of interpretations that have been proposed over the centuries, my work clearly shows that all these exegeses share two fundamental limits: the former is a necessarily partial analysis, almost exclusively based on what is written in Parmenides, the latter is the absence of a historical perspective
Lamarche, Vincent. "Constance et temporalité selon Platon." Paris 4, 1988. http://www.theses.fr/1988PA040054.
Testo completoIn spite of what the divisions of the Timaeus (27d) might suggest, Plato grants dignity and constancy to temporal beings, by allowing, thanks to a double "parricide", the possibility of an intermediate between the status he reserves to the intelligible and the one attributed to the tangible world by the relativists. In the existence of time and in our participation in its "forms" (the "was" and the "will be"), he sees an evidence of the interaction between "being" and "becoming", and a sign of divine concern. In the Philebus and in the Parmenides, he conceives time as a "mixture" of "limit" and "infinity", and settles the intelligibility of temporal becoming by means of distinctions which seem to announce Aristotle’s physics

Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012AIXM3008.
Testo completoThe legacy of the presocratic and homeric thinking is present in Protagoras' conception of language. He places man in the center of a world constantly changing, in which knowledge of kairos is a guide for discursive production, as well as for action. The reconstruction of the thinking or Protagoras of Abdera requires to place it in its historical context to understund the tensions among the intellectuals of his time. This reconstruction will be done in three axis: speech (logos), action (pragma, praxis), time (chronos, kairos). The epistemological and ontological aspects are emphasized in the doctrine of man-mesure. Protagoras' position on the value of logos stresses the importance of situational factors to determine what is properly predicated. Man is also determined by two other variables: the social reality in constant evolution and the specific experience of individual subjects. Protagoras thinks that man builts this reality in a double temporal dimension: diachronic and synchronic. We can confirm our conclusions in the thought of later philosophers (Plato and Aristotle) and orators (Isocrates)
Thein, Karel. "Le lien intraitable : enquête sur le temps dans la République et le Timée de Platon." Paris, EHESS, 1995. http://www.theses.fr/1995EHES0307.
Testo completoThe time is not only one of the topics discussed in the dialogues of plato, but also that which bears and even requires the philosophical activity. The man, and even his soul that is considered to be immortal, have no means to releve themselves from time. Before making the time an object of its inquiry, the philosophy presents itself as an effort to cope with the time of men's lives in the cities. The time of becoming, oscillating ceaselessly between the growth and the destruction, is an opposed pole to the regular time of the motions of heavenly bodies. In between these two realms, the philosophy constitutes itself as their bond. If plato's republic and timaeus permit us to understand the constitution and the role of this bond, they teach us equally the impossibility of a final reconciliation of these two irreducobly different temporalities. No philosophy can replace the politics as the art of relation between the men

Testo completoThe thesis entitled Proust and Plato is mainly based on the affinities between the two great figures of universal scope. Although there is a significant time gap between them, we have tried to develop an approximation in three distinct parts. The first part is devoted to etymology and philosophy of language, namely the effort of Proust and Plato to establish the correctness of the name against the thing it represents. At first, we put the language at the epicenter of our analysis, in an effort to locate the various tendencies, –cratylism, hermogenism, naturalism, conventionalism –, in a critical dialogue: the Cratylus. Secondly, it is etymology that revives the linguistic effervescence, representing a pivotal topic in both Proust and Plato: it questions the use of words and names, as well as their relevance with the thing they represent. The other great linguistic theory proposed is hermogenism, named after the theory of Hermogenes in the Cratylus, who argues that the names have been invented on the basis of an agreement between the people who use them. Secondly, it is love in all its manifestations that takes over: the focus is on the most delightful work of Plato, the Banquet. We will start by highlighting the role of the banquet as an institution in antiquity. These are without a doubt the mostappropriate surroundings to talk about pederasty, the androgyne, but also ἀγάπη. Nevertheless, the Banquet also has its Aristophanian side: by assigning to the great comedy writer the articulation of his most famous myth, Plato perhaps wanted to highlight the more satirical side of eros. However, this idyllic myth also triggers the review of many themes concerning homosexuality in ancient Greece. The Proustian part on love is dedicated initially to the importance of the aristocratic banquet, place of the social, romantic and artistic initiation of the Narrator. It is furthermore based on the different manifestations of ἒρως and ἀγάπη in the novel:friendship, homosexuality, artistic procreation. The last stage of the second part is dedicated to death and the beyond in Greek Antiquity and the three tales of nekyia in the Platonic corpus. We will underline the existence of it as a leitmotiv in the Proustian novel as well. The final section has a rather disconcerting title: Δεύτερος πλοῦς, a second navigation. Here, we would like to emphasize the effort of Plato and Proust to reach the most unfathomable truths by taking iconoclastic paths: for Plato, it would be reminiscence, Ideal aesthetics and myth, while the Proustian segment focuses on time and memory, aesthetics and the narrative techniques of the novel. We hope that at the end of this study the contiguous reflections highlighted in the works of Plato and Proust will have turned into dazzling sparkles
Moor, Mieke de. "Aristote et la question du temps : avec la traduction française de l'ouvrage de Gernot Böhme, "Zeit und Zahl" introduction, première et deuxième parties relatives à Platon et Aristote." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012AIXM3090.
Testo completoThe dissertation provides an analysis of the Aristotelian theory of time based on Physics IV, 10–14, and does so from a new perspective examining the historical and intellectual context of the study of time in Aristotle's work, which leads to the presentation of a theoretical and practical history of the notion χρόνος in ancient Greece. This analysis is subsequently related to the question as to how Aristotle himself uses this concept in his so-called descriptive works. In this respect, Aristotle's History of Animals occupies a special place in this analysis, to the extent that a detailed examination of all the occurrences of χρόνος in this work provides elements corroborating the interpretation of Physics IV, 10-14 as well as of Aristotle's attempt to provide foundations for a theory of time based on physics and not on mathematics. The objective of this analysis is to show that the question of time as presented by Aristotle amounts to a proper attempt to think of time and present as single concepts based on their respective multiplicities. Furthermore, this dissertation is accompanied by a partial translation of the German work of Gernot Böhme : Zeit und Zahl, Studien zur Zeittheorie Bei Platon, Aristoteles, Leibniz und Kant, 1974, which is the published version of the Habilitationsschrift of the author. The translation concerns, in addition to the introduction, the chapters on Plato and Aristotle

Testo completoMy research is devoted to the Greek notion of κρίσις whereas classical studies usually favour the modern notion of crisis. It focuses on the Epic, the Hippocratic Corpus and Plato’s dialogues. The existing research on κρίσις has led to extremely varied results. My work offerts to reunite these differences in order to define a more general notion of κρίσις, thanks to a comprehensive lexical analysis. The κρίσις seems to be an act which puts an end to a conflict, thus enabling a breach between two opposite states. Time suddenly speeds, and the long torment resolves. Thanks to selection and decision making, danger gives way to a new life force: κρίσις enables γένεσις. These characteristics can already be found in the Epic where κρίσις refers to various decisions suddenly bringing generation and salvation. The medical notion of crisis is also a sudden recovery even though it can partially be predicted by prognosis, which brings health and balance back. The platonic κρίσις, which is akin to judging or discerning something, allows various changes (from darkness to light, from impurity to purity, from sickness to health) and ultimately enables the soul to regenerate. Fertility of the thought is restored; the soul can be reincarnated in a better shape or life reassembled with carefully selected elements (Philebus). As a turning point for a possible rebirth, as the climax of philosophical endeavours, the liberating power of the κρίσις has also often been dramatized in dialogues
