Abstract (sommario):
This study explores undergraduate students’ difficulties in translating English and Arabic plurals. The results of an English and Arabic plural translation test exhibited cases where Arabic plurals matching those in English were translated correctly. However, the students had difficulty translating the following: (i) Arabic plurals with a singular English equivalent, e.g., مجوهرات /mujawharaat/ jewellery; (ii) Arabic duals with two different singular stems, e.g., الرافدان the Tigris and Euphrates; (iii) multiple Arabic plurals, i.e. plurals of paucity and multiplicity, e.g., دجاج /dajaaj/ chicken, دجاجات /dajaajaat/ a number of hens; (iv) stems with two plurals and different usages, e.g., economics اقتصاديات /iqtiṣadiyyaat/, economies اقتصادات /iqtiṣadaat/; (v) compound plurals, e.g., image processors معالجات الصور /muʕaalijaat aṣṣuwar/; (vi) English nouns ending in -ies that have the same singular and plural form, e.g., series, species; (vii) singular and plural forms of the same base when the base could assume two parts of speech, e.g., rich and riches; wood and woods; (viii) foreign/Latin singular and plural forms, e.g. ,indices, larvae, tempi, oases; and (ix) names of tools and articles of dress consisting of two parts ending in -s, e.g., scissors مقص /miqaṣ/, مقصات /miqaṣaat/, scales ميزان /mīzaan/ and موازين /mawazīn/ and more. Error data analysis showed that the subjects made more errors in translating Arabic plurals into English than in translating English plurals into Arabic, made more interlanguage than interlanguage errors, had more morphological than semantic difficulties on the Arabic-English plural translation test, and had more semantic difficulties on the English-Arabic plural translation test. They tended to translate imitatively rather than discriminately, and literal translation was the most common strategy. When they could not access the meaning of a noun on the test, they provided an equivalent that was phonologically close, or offered a paraphrase, an explanation, or an extraneous equivalent. In translating English and Arabic plurals, transfers were bidirectional, i.e., students transferred a noun’s morphological features from the source to the target language, regardless of whether the source language was Arabic (L1) or English (L2). Recommendations for plural translation instruction are provided.

Abstract (sommario):
For the existing methods of image registration based on feature, a new method of image registration based on plural differential is proposed with the theory of plural differential. The proposed method uses plural differential to enhance the texture feature of the digital image first, and then uses SIFT to extract the keypoints, at last uses the RANSAC algorithm to get the correct number of matching keypoints.

Abstract (sommario):
In discussions of imago Dei, we largely confine ourselves to functional and moral affinity to God, that is that we have been made in God’s image with the result that obedience to God amounts to imitating his moral character and behavior. However, we need to add the existential affinity of God’s being to our understanding of God’s image in us, specifically the fact that he is both singular (in essence) and plural (in person). To some degree, people share God’s singular–plural quality and that one–many affinity can give great insight into gospel ministry. Moreover, as with the moral dimension of imago Dei, this singular–plural dimension also was marred by sin so that we, as individuals and as whole cultures, tend to lean toward one extreme or the other, toward singularity (unhealthy individualism) or plurality (monolithic communalism). The gospel of grace addresses both. Therefore, as we prepare to do ministry, we should study our audience to discern the existential lean of its own incarnation of imago Dei, so that we can best speak the gospel to fit audience need.

Abstract (sommario):
Even before they started the editorial board of the new Dutch hymnal was blamed for being too elitist. The fact that they had been selected on the basis of their expertise made them vulnerable for such criticism. Subsequently the position of the editors has been a point of continuous reflection. In this contribution, we will argue that this image of editors as dissociated from users of the hymn book is only one among several available identity repertoires. In order to answer the question which ‘identities-in-relation-to-users’ do the editors construct in the meetings of the board and how do they value these identities?, we will use a broad definition of identity and focus on positions performed in social interaction. The interaction in question concerns seven selected meetings of the editorial board, all of which were audio-taped and transcribed. Looking closely at the identities that were constructed during those meetings, we distinguish six positions, ranging from a great to no distance between editors and users: editors, professionals, experienced, vanguard, pleasers and equals.

Abstract (sommario):
Dutch compounds with ‘e’ or ‘en’ as linking element between modifier and head were presented to mother tongue speakers of Afrikaans in an experimental setting that explored the possibility that these different spelling formats would suggest a singular or plural meaning of the modifier. The participants appeared to interpret ‘en’ in the linking element as an indication for singular, and ‘e’ as signifying plural. This outcome supported the findings in comparable studies on Dutch, which also revealed a tendency to understand the spelling of the linking schwa in relation to conventions for the spelling of the plural suffix. In Afrikaans the spelling of the plural forms is ‘e’, whereas in Dutch the spelling of plural forms is ‘en’. This explains why the results of the Dutch and Afrikaans experiments, while using the same materials, are each other’s mirror image.

Abstract (sommario):
To understand the use of a grammatical form in one language, it is sometimes helpful to look at another language. In this paper, I propose that the English bare plural expresses nonbounded quantity in a mental space, just as the Finnish bare partitive does. The different formal means used by English and Finnish thus converge in the cognitive unity of the grammatical structuring of the lexical content. The bare plural is not the plural counterpart of the indefinite singular, that is, it does not express the discourse status of its referent, but rather, it belongs to the quantity domain. One of the basic tenets of cognitive grammar is that grammar is motivated. I propose that the nonbounded semantics of the bare plural is based on a formal-semantic analogy with mass nouns. This same motivation operates on bare singulars as well, for they too can be used to create a cognitive image similar to that of mass nouns.

Abstract (sommario):
In some contexts, plural nominals have inclusive interpretation, allowing atoms in their reference domain; in others, they are exclusive, allowing only sums. Selecting between the two interpretations has been shown to be sensitive to both world-knowledge pressures (Farkas & de Swart 2010) and contextual relevance (Grimm 2010). The principal semantic factor claimed to be involved is monotonicity direction (Sauerland, Anderssen & Yatsushiro 2005; Spector 2007; Zweig 2009; Farkas & de Swart 2010): upward monotone environments tend to select exclusive readings; downward monotone ones, inclusive readings. In four image verification experiments, we tested this claim and found support for the generalization. The effect of monotonicity direction, however, is small. Moreover we find that varying whether a plural is in the scope of a quantified description has a much larger effect on the prevalence of the exclusive interpretation. This suggests that monotonicity, though involved, is not a decisive factor in plural interpretation.

Abstract (sommario):
The ability of modern TEMs to acquire a series of energy filtered images opens up new possibilities in energy loss compositional analysis. In particular, an electron spectroscopic imaging (ESI) series may be treated as a 2-D array of spectra whose resolution is dictated by the step size of the image series, as illustrated in Fig (a). This allows standard spectroscopic analysis techniques to be used on the extracted ‘image-spectra’, such as the removal of plural scattering by deconvolution. Examples of this are given in Fig (b) and (c), which show how Fourier-log and Fourier-ratio deconvolution can be used to recover the single scattering distribution (SSD) from both the low-loss and core-loss regions from a Cr specimen. A pure elemental sample is ideal for testing the validity of such analysis techniques for quantitative compositional mapping, and more details of this method will be published elsewhere. Further, for many simple metal systems, such as steels and alloys, and for simple semiconductors it is possible to model the plasmon contribution using a simple Drude-Lorentz model.

Abstract (sommario):
Since networks of main roads are basic information for the classification of use of the earth surface, the automatic detection of roads from satellite images is a very important issue. In this paper, a new detection theory is proposed which can overcome drawbacks of current theories and detect plural roads in an image with high speed and high precision. Firstly, binary images representing edges are used to evaluate the possibility for a road to pass on a given pixel. An 8-directions-filter, a clearing filter and a parallel-edge-detection filter are proposed which can bring insufficient local information to each other to obtain global information enough to detect a road and by which the possibility of a road-passing on the pixel can be effectively evaluated. Secondly, by using the Hough transform and the optimal search method it is possible to detect a complete road. This detection theory does not depend on the size of image and can detect all the roads in an image including intersecting and T-type roads.

Abstract (sommario):
The intensity of a characteristic electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) image does not, in general, directly reflect the elemental concentration. In fact, the raw core loss image can give a misleading impression of the elemental distribution. This is because the measured core edge signal depends on the amount of plural scattering which can vary significantly from region to region in a sample. Here, we show how the method for quantifying spectra due to Egerton et al. can be extended to maps.

Abstract (sommario):
Our era is dominated by the prevailing presence of images. The spectator often identifies with the characters and aims to interpret the signs evoked by the objects, since every image is governed by codes. If we look at the history of image semiotics, we observe a cognitive and pragmatic approach. According to Kant, the images we receive from the environment are not simply reproductions but often creative productions based on patterns generated by the imagination. According to recent research in semiotics, we observe that the pragmatic approach is extended by a study of stimuli collected by the environment. On the other hand, Köhler’s theory of Gestalt considers perception as a pre-conscious activity, linking visual semiology with the functional interpretation of perception. In addition, Tardy brings into focus strategies of visual communication by highlighting the semiotic status of represented objects. For this reason, it is essential to deepen the versatility of the field of semantic interpretation of a visual support from different types of mental operations. Finally, the semiological approach to the image with different types of mental operation will be able to generate a plural and original semantic interpretation through the creative exploitation of visual elements.

Abstract (sommario):
This article argues that visual practices, including image production and use, promote a theology of transformation. To discern the theological implications of these visual practices, this article employs ethnographic research and material analysis of images created and/or used by the Congregation of St. Joseph, a Roman Catholic women’s religious community in the United States. First, it examines the sisters’ prayer with or creation of images as a source of theological reflection. Second, it investigates the deployment of images in various ministries as a means of inviting others into the sisters’ vision of the church. Third, it assesses the commodification of images by the Congregation as a form of evangelisation that engages and challenges the global world. This article concludes that visual practices potentially inspire action for justice and compassion as well as reveal the challenge of manifesting a theology of transformation in a global and plural world.

Abstract (sommario):
Automated visual solder inspection was studied for different printed circuit boards (PCBs) based on 3-D-image analysis. The optical 3-D scanner accurately detects height of a solder joint from differently focused images of a laser spot. Emitted laser light on the solder joint is detected simultaneously by plural sensors whose focal points are set at different height to realize high-speed height acquisition without secondary-reflection problems caused by the specular surface of the solder joint. An inspection algorithm was designed to recognize a solder joint using detected height and the intensity image so that different shapes of solder fillet do not affect inspection performance. A solder joint is classified based on extracted 3-D features of its fillet shape and 3-D location of the lead from its pad. Inspection parameters are automatically generated with inspection parameter autogeneration using electronic component and PCB design data. Evaluation showed the system gave 100% defect detection and very few false alarms (0.13%) using autogenerated inspection parameters. Results show the technique to be promising in actual production lines for different PCBs.

Abstract (sommario):
In print-type steganography and watermarking, visible calibration patterns are arranged around content in which invisible data are embedded, to provide plural feature points for normalization of a scanned image. However, it is clear that conventional visible calibration patterns interfere with the page layout and artwork of original contents. Additionally, visible calibration patterns are not suitable for security services. In this paper, we propose an arrangement of and a detection method for an invisible calibration pattern based on human visual perception. We embed the proposed calibration pattern in an original image by adding a high-frequency component to blue intensity in limited regions. The proposed method protects the page layout and artwork because it is difficult for observers to detect the calibration pattern embedded into an image with a normal background.

This article attempts to recover the intellectual trajectory of James Hillman. It analyzes the diverse steps of his intellectual journey and emphasizes the extremely mercurial character that characterizes his writing. Starting with the furious potential of his ideas and arguments, Hillman attempts to articulate a thought that is free, multiple, slippery and plural, one that resists being captured in any attempt to unify or define a prevalent direction. It is these characteristics that approximate Hillman's ideas and archetypal psychology with Brazil and its particular way of ‘soul making’.

Abstract (sommario):
Since in many cases past and present the professional translation field is not — or is only weakly — differentiated, the transposability of dispositions acquired through experiences related both to other fields and to translators’ larger life conditions and social trajectory may play a fundamental role in a translator’s habitus. Research on translators’ socio-biographies therefore deserves special attention. For native literary author-translators who live and work in a diglossic society characterized by socio-linguistic conflicts between the translators’ working languages, the plural and dynamic internalization of this conflict and of broader linguistic and cultural hierarchies is likely to form one of the constitutive aspects of their habitus and self-image, of their literary and translational behavior. In the first part of this article, I propose a tentative typology of Belgian native author-translators’ habitus and self-image according to potentially different internalizations of the Belgian linguistic conflict in their broader socialization process. In the second part, I present relevant aspects of the socio-biography of Camille Melloy, a native literary author-translator who translated between conflicting cultures in early twentieth century Belgium.

Abstract (sommario):
In addition to the challenges of competing religious and secular worldviews in Myanmar, there are also a number of inherent social and political realities, which hinder intertribal Christian unity, that must be addressed missiologically. This article considers, first, the theme of isolation in Myanmar’s social construct: specifically, the reality of the “plural society”; the way in which tribes are identified independently of one another (ethnonyms); and the way in which the tribes (as in-groups) view outgroups (“image theory”). Then, it considers the mistrust that has developed in the wake of political destabilization and human rights concerns, while recognizing the political fluidity presently on display in Myanmar’s apparent climate of rapprochement.

Abstract (sommario):
This article presents some fundamental matters in visual culture. Philosophy has been grappling with important issues of image and ocularcentrism. These matters have shaped and brought impacts on the world’s visual culture. On the one hand, an image with all its possible interpretations today tends to be captured as an object and not so much as something that is at the same time plural and moving. On the other hand, people’s way of seeing tends to be blurred by the ocularcentrism. This might be a crucial problem that brings significant implications on one of the most important aspects of human life, that is, art activity, and particularly on cinema. The author of this article invites the readers to be aware of the negative inclinations around the issues of image and ocularcentrism. Some of the important challenges in the cinematic world are how people continually reformulate their experience of an image and how the ocularcentrism character in our visual culture can be positioned in the heart of the matter. In an effort to respond to these challenges, one can approach philosophy in a different way in order to refresh his or her way of seeing that might have been tiresome and cloudy.

Abstract (sommario):
In this article I take up the image of inclination developed by Adriana Cavarero in her book, Inclinations: A Critique of Rectitude as a mode of developing an account of history informed by an ontology of heterogeneous ethics. Clarifying the potential of inclination contra the Kantian figure of “uprightness,” the principle task of this article is to reimagine the implications of inclination with regard to Walter Benjamin’s theses on history. Ultimately, I show that by pushing at the relationality inherent to an inclined ontology of the self a meaningful exchange can be generated between plural historical temporalities, a move that reveals the inclined figure’s potential to redeem narratives of the historically dispossessed.

Abstract (sommario):
This article is to describe the imageof the Trinity God who is affectionate based on the Holy Bible and the Church Tradion. The Trinity is God who is Supreme good, plural as well as singular, all-Merciful, inclusive, communicative, and affectionate. God reveals Himself through His creations, the Israelities exodus, the commission of Jesus and the Holy Spirit. In the mids of the world that is easily segregated by the issues of ethnocentrism, radicalism, primodialism, religious fundalism, sacism, horizontal conflicts, etc; the image of the affectionate Trinity God could be the source of inspirations and model to the reformation and transformation of the human race’s better, friendly, harmonious, affectionate, inclusive, and humane life.

Abstract (sommario):
Existing PET (Positron Emission Tomography) systems make clear images in demonstration (measuring small PET reagent in pure water), however images in real diagnosis become unclear. The authors suspected that this problem was caused by Compton scattering in a detector. When PET systems observe plural photomultiplier tube outputs, an original emission point is regarded as centroid of the outputs. However, even if plural emission in Compton scattering occur, these systems calculate original point in the same way as single emission. Therefore, the authors considered that rejecting Compton scattering events makes PET systems much better, and made prototype counter. Main components of the prototype counter are plate-like high-growth-rate (HGR) La-GPS scintillators and wavelength shifting fibers (WLSF). HGR crystals grow 10 times as fast as a mono-crystal (a normal mono-crystal grows at 2 – 3 mm an hour). Thus, it includes microbubble and its transparency get worth. Consequently, HGR crystals usually are not used in radiation measuring instruments. However, this time they are used on the purpose. Because of their low transparency, scintillation lights come out right above and right under of emission position. Therefore, Compton scattering events is rejected easily. The prototype detector has an effective area of 300 by 300 square mm. The detector consists of 24 layers. One layer consists of HGR La-GPS scintillator of 1 mm thickness. Top and bottom surface of scintillator were covered by dual sheets of WLSF with a diameter of 0.2 mm. Sheets of WLSF on top and bottom of the scintillator make a right angle with each other, and measure X- and Y-components. Z-component is measured by difference of WLSF outputs between top and bottom. If plural layers output signals, this counter regards the event as Compton scattering event, and reject the event. Even if only a layer output signals, the event is rejected when number output signals from WLSF is more than 1.5 times of single emission. Material cost of this system is, 0.2M$ for HGR La-GPS, 0.03M$ for WLSF, 0.03M$ for 600 units of 6 by 6 mm SiPM's, 0.12M$ for 12000 units of 1 by 1 mm SiPM's, and 0.09M$ for 1800 channel of signal readout circuits. Considering total cost, price of this PET will be set 1M$ or less. This idea was confirmed with numerical simulation and experimentation. In experimentation, position resolution in photoelectric absorption was 0.2 mm, and minimum distance that this detector could recognize plural emission in Compton scattering was 1 mm. In parallel, three kinds of model were made: a prototype detector, all the signals readout method, and resistance delay method. Simulation setting was 2 MBq/L in normal tissue and 10 MBq/L in cancer. As a result of simulation, a prototype detector identified 3 mm cancer, however the others made unclear image and was not able to identified cancer. That is to say, the prototype detector is able to reject Compton scattering events and inexpensive. Therefore, whole-body PET system with this detector must diagnose cancer with a diameter of 3 mm or more and be priced 1M$ or less

I point out that the semiarid was not born ready, but has been transformed by the plurality of Indian, black and white hands. However, this does not deny the disappearance of the first two groups. I show how the semiarid has become, over the centuries, a cultural product invented by the human expressiveness, marked by the "aesthetics of the beauty of pain." I recognize that this has consequences for their perception in the national imagination. I conclude by criticizing the hegemonic image of the semiarid, indicating that it needs to be reformulated to correspond more to real life. Keywords: Semiarid; Ethnic-Plural Product; Aesthetic-Cultural Expression; Imaginary.RESUMENA partir de un trabajo de campo etnográfico, configurado por observaciones participantes, conversaciones con pensadores locales y profundizando la temática con especialistas, el objetivo consistió en: pensar sobre el semiárido en el Nordeste de Brasil, reflejando su construcción histórica en su doble interfaz entre lo real y lo imaginario nacional. Abstract (sommario):
The collection of texts Image and Anti-Image – Julije Knifer and the Problem of Representation is based on multi- and transdisciplinary research conducted by Croatian and international critics and theoreticians. They have investigated the contemporary sensibility for the questions of image and pictoriality by referring to a common starting point: the oeuvre of one of the most important Croatian artists – Julije Knifer. In their analysis of Knifer’s paintings since the early 1960s, which revolve around a single motif – the “meander” – which the artist has repeated and varied throughout his artistic career, the authors have followed the changing reception of his work from the supremacy of the high modernist image concept, such as postulated in Greenberg’s formalistic theory, until today, when theoretical proposals have become essentially different. In his introduction to the project, editor Krešimir Purgar has stressed the importance of new perspectives that Knifer’s work may offer if viewed in the context of new disciplines such as visual studies and image science. The 21 articles, grouped into five thematic sections, aim at clarifying and expanding the references of Knifer’s “meander” by taking diverse informative and original approaches that have this recent image theory as their starting point. In the context of Croatian scholarly output, this publication is notable for having accomplished a rare blend between monographic material and a series of interdisciplinary, scholarly-theoretical studies based on extremely varied perspectives, resulting in a valuable comparative miscellany, a contribution both to the actualisation and new positioning of Knifer’s art and to our insight into various analytic and interpretative approaches related to the present state of art theory. Such an approach assigns a special place to the image, to pictoriality and visuality. The theoretical perspectives of image science and the heterogeneous, plural strategies of research developed within the new image studies (image science, visual studies) assimilate and expand rather than replace the previously accepted methods, common in traditional theoretical approaches to the discipline of art history.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract In Tunisia since the 2010–11 revolution, the relationship between activism and territories has emerged as central in the redefinition of social conflicts. The present essay analyses the growing environmental protests, focusing on a series of movements in defence of urban and rural regions which, although different from each other, share the centrality of the local dimension in defining new forms of conflict and the environmentalist theme as the guiding thread of their struggles. Based on a historical analysis of the roots of the environmental crisis and inequalities in the country, on the one hand, and on the results of fieldwork on the ongoing environmental protests, on the other hand, the aim of this study is to give an enlarged image of the plural forms of eco-resistance that are taking place in Tunisia.

Abstract (sommario):
The “other” is seen as a social construction, which helps the establishing of the own identity. To explore how self-identity is reconstructed through deconstructing the image of “the other”, we chose to analyze the case of migrants, who are positioned as ‘the other’ and are treated as distant from the host societies. Albanians in Italy, especially those who have experienced the exodus of March and August of 1991, are at the center of the analysis, because they were the first ones in contact with the Italian society, after the collapse of the communist regime. The secondary data from the literature review and the qualitative primary data, generated from the biographical narration of eighteen people have been used to explore the phenomenon. In order to meet this research criteria, there are some questions to be answered which will help in solving the core issues of the problem. How the boats that arrived from Albanian coasts in Italy did create the image in the plural of settled people as “the other”? Which were the strategies used by these people to deconstruct the image as “the other”? How has self-identity been reconstructed through the time? The research pointed out that the image of “the other”, as a universal process, is created more quickly under the influence of factors that make the "other" more visible, such as the massive exodus through the boats. Although the mimesis tendency was adopted in Albanian immigrants’ case, pushed by the will for a positive social identity, the coexistence with the natives helped to rebuild the perceptions, attitudes, behaviors, and identities, even though self-identity is a never-ending process. Abstract (sommario):
The perception of the Judicial Council is, throughout its existence, too often associated to partisan or corporative interests. This has caused the image of the judiciary to suffer as a whole. One way to avoid dependence on outside interests is the procedure to appoint its members. Until now, three systems were tested, but none proved to be effective for the intended aims. This essay formulates a new appointment system proposal for the Council’s members, involving the direct participation of judges and the legislature. It pursues the following objectives: to observe the democratic principle, and to facilitate and promote the participation of all judges and magistrates in the election of its governing body —thus ensuring a plural and inclusive body—. Additionally, other measures are formulated in order to limit outside influences and pressure on the Council, to promote the election of its members based primarily on merit and ability, and to steer the Council back to its strict mandate of defending judicial independence and Justice interests.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: In this study, is observed that the representation of the fantastic fantastic based on the imaginary of heroes, prodigies and bestiaries contributes to the great historical-sociological questioning that is essentially part of the literary production of Mário Cláudio: the alienating existence of humanity that at distance its plural essence and, consequently, its creative essence. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract: This article deals with the fact of the religious diversity in the city of Granada, from its conquest by the Catholic King and Queen in 1492 up to now, and going through the different historical stages, with and anthropological perspective. Once Granada was definitely conquered, a progressive christianization of the city and its Kingdom was carried out. Post-renaissance Granada, in the baroque period, has population markedly christianized, although the inquisitorial work is still remarkable. This panorama extends all along the XVIII century, when some foreing travellers, many of them protestans, began to visit the city, as many of the travellers in the XIX century. In the XX century, specially in the second half, it will take place a greater arrival of foreign religions which will be attractive for people to convert to them. However, this time, it will not be a forced but a voluntary conversion, thus creating a more plural image of the city.

Abstract (sommario):
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate image search and retrieval problems in selected search engines in relation to Persian writing style challenges.Design/methodology/approachThis study is an applied one, and to answer the questions the authors used an evaluative research method. The aim of the research is to explore the morphological and semantic problems of Persian language in connection with image search and retrieval among the three major and widespread search engines: Google, Yahoo and Bing. In order to collect the data, a checklist designed by the researcher was used and then the data were analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics.FindingsThe results indicate that Google, Yahoo and Bing search engines do not pay enough attention to morphological and semantic features of Persian language in image search and retrieval. This research reveals that six groups of Persian language features include derived words, derived/compound words, Persian and Arabic Plural words, use of dotted T and the use of spoken language and polysemy, which are the major problems in this area. In addition, the results suggest that Google is the best search engine of all in terms of compatibility with Persian language features.Originality/valueThis study investigated some new aspects of the above-mentioned subject through combining morphological and semantic aspects of Persian language with image search and retrieval. Therefore, this study is an interdisciplinary research, the results of which would help both to offer some solutions and to carry out similar research on this subject area. This study will also fill a gap in research studies conducted so far in this area in Farsi language, especially in image search and retrieval. Moreover, findings of this study can help to bridge the gap between the user’s questions and search engines (systems) retrievals. In addition, the methodology of this paper provides a framework for further research on image search and retrieval in databases and search engines.

Abstract (sommario):
It is not uncommon for an electrical failure in a microelectronic device to be traced back to an individual resistive contact, such as a W contact lined by TiN to the underlying metal silicide [1]. Identifying the root cause of the defective cell then requires the capability of extracting interfacial chemistry and microstructure with near atomic resolution, which is achieved by recording EELS and EDX data either along 1-d lines or from 2-d arrays. EELS data are characterized by intrinsically low signal-to-background ratios and plural inelastic-scattering effects, which presents a challenge to the reliability of the methods used to extract quantitative information from a spectrum image. Commercially available software packages by Emispec and Gatan currently provide routines for power-law or polynomial background fits and allow the net counts under peaks or edges to be determined from each pixel. in both cases each spectrum in the series is processed in the same manner.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper describes the way Belgian politicians represented themselves, their parties and the political situation in newspaper interviews in the government formation period of 2007. Interviews with four politicians, both in Dutch and in French, have been analyzed in order to reconstruct the image the politicians convey of themselves and of the political parties they stand for, and to reconstruct the frames they apply to the political situation. A critical linguistic and framing analysis shows how this representation is built up through an interplay of names used to describe oneself, the specific use of the pronouns of the first person plural and consistent metaphors. The paper ties in with the theme of this special issue in that it bridges the gap between construction grammar and linguistic discourse analysis: knowledge of social networks (and their evaluation of utterances) is important for analyzing choices between discourse alternatives by discourse agents (as politicians are).

Abstract (sommario):
This work refers to an investigation into the representations of trans women in magazine covers of the national editorial market during the decade of 2010. Methodologically, it is qualitative, descriptive, and bibliographic research. Data collection took place from documents (magazine covers) and the data were analyzed using the Image Analysis technique. As a result, in general terms, we can understand that fashion magazines, in a certain way, sell mass ideas and ways of dealing with the body based on socially imposed standards of beauty - thin, white, and aesthetically impeccable, whereas, the other magazines seek to emphasize plural bodies that are closer to real figures, based on producing cultural values that go beyond aesthetic issues. It is concluded, therefore, that the representations of this social parcel that is so marginalized and culturally stigmatized must be further investigated, to broaden discussions in the most varied contexts.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractDespite the problematic political positions he adopted during his life span, the work of Carl Schmitt contains a fascinating argument in favour of ‘the political’, which is understood as a plural symbolic space composed of friends and enemies who reciprocally recognise each other. Schmitt’s struggle for the political is a struggle for a public spirit which accounts for this plurality. One of the terrains on which Schmitt wages this struggle is that of historical meaning. The image of history is crucial for the political, as it is one level on which the relation between enemies is symbolised. In this paper, Schmitt’s polemic for a political conception of history, which gives the enemy and the defeated their due place as political subjects, will be reconstructed. Central to Schmitt’s endeavour is the attempt to think historical singularity, against the notion of repetition in history, against the understanding of history as a reservoir of ‘lessons’ and against ideologies of progress. Through his polemic, a profane and sober image of history appears which stresses singularity, relative contingency and openness, and the pluralisation of social temporalities. The enigmatic notion of the katechon will play a crucial role in providing a very minimal but crucial form of historical meaning for such a political conception of history.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractEngaging debates around ethnic nationhood and knowledge production, this article examines the influence of Bible translation on corporate identity formation in Toro and Ituri (1900–40). It studies translations instigated by one individual to investigate textual agency wherever it leads. The translator Apolo Kivebulaya promoted adherence to Christianity as an inclusive and linguistically-plural global community. His translation for the Mbuti, which had limited circulation among its intended audience, shows an aspect of this global community at work, remaking the international image of the Mbuti. His earlier Runyoro-Rutoro translation, however, encouraged a local and political form of corporate identity in which translation and Old Testament stories helped to form an ethnic moral economy. In focusing upon Bible translation among the Toro and the Mbuti, the article moves from the politically influential Ganda, the focus of much historiography of Christianity in East Africa, and explains the roots of later revivalism and patriotism.

Abstract (sommario):
The title βασιλεὺς βασιλέων in the Apocalypse (Rev 17.14; 19.16) has generated a variety of interpretations in regard to its identification, symbolism and background. Commentators regularly note that joining a singular noun with its genitive plural is a common way to express the superlative in Hebrew. Others find special relevance of the phrase to the time of Domitian when it is said ‘he dictated the form of a letter to be used by his procurators, he began: “Our lord and god commands so and so”’ (Suetonius, Domitian, 13). The present analysis argues that inscriptions on relevant coinage confirm that the title was a clear allusion to the tradition of the Parthian kings, Rome's historic enemy. Within the context of the Apocalypse, the title is applied to Jesus Christ, presented triumphantly conquering Rome in the image of Rome's feared Parthian enemy. Included in the analysis is an extensive tabulation of relevant numismatic evidence.
