Abstract (sommario):
Despite concerns that sociocultural connotations of the term citizen science may discourage engagement with such projects among certain groups, little empirical evidence is available about the behavioral effects of this terminology. One specific area of concern is the persistent gender gap in citizen science participation. A two-week field experiment (N = 699) with users of an online platform framed as either a citizen science or an environmental stewardship project examined framing and gender effects on engagement, sense of community (SoC), and indicators of pro-environmental interest. Results revealed no direct effects of the frame. Rather, framing interacted with participants’ perceptions of the extent to which the project was about citizen science or environmental stewardship. Perceiving the project as environmental stewardship predicted higher engagement and environmental interest among women than among men, and greater SoC only among men assigned to the environmental stewardship frame. A key implication is that the congruence between a project’s label and people’s experiences in the project may be more important than how the project is labeled.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: The rise of antimicrobial resistance has made it critical for clinicians to understand antimicrobial stewardship principles. We sought to determine whether the opportunity to participate in an American Board of Pediatrics Maintenance of Certification Part 4 (MOC4) quality improvement (QI) project would engage pediatricians and improve their knowledge about antimicrobial stewardship. Methods: In August 2019, a new clinical algorithm for acute appendicitis, spearheaded by the antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP), was implemented at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Oakland to standardize care and optimize antimicrobial use. Medical staff were invited to participate in a QI project evaluating the impact of this algorithm. Data were collected for the 2 quarters preceding implementation (baseline), for the quarter of implementation (transition period), and for the quarter after implementation. Participants were offered MOC4 credit for reviewing these 3 cycles of data and associated materials highlighting information about antimicrobial stewardship. An initial survey was given to participants to assess their baseline knowledge via 4 questions about antimicrobial use in surgical patients (Table 1). At the conclusion of the QI project, another survey was conducted to reassess participant knowledge and to evaluate overall satisfaction with the project. Results: In total, 150 clinicians completed the initial survey. Of these, 44% were general pediatricians and 56% were pediatric subspecialists. Based on years out of training, their levels of experience varied: >20 years in 24%, 11–20 years in 32.7%, 0–10 years in 34.7%, and currently in training in 8.7%. Of the 150 initial participants, 133 (89%) completed the QI project and the second survey. Between surveys, there was significant improvement in knowledge about the appropriate timing and duration of surgical antibiotic prophylaxis (Table 1). Moreover, 88% of participants responded that the QI project was extremely effective in helping them learn about antimicrobial stewardship principles and about ASP interventions. Conclusions: Participation in this MOC4 QI project resulted in significant improvement in knowledge about antimicrobial use in surgical patients, and the activity was perceived as a highly effective way to learn about antimicrobial stewardship. QI projects that leverage MOC4 credit can be a powerful tool for engaging pediatricians and disseminating education about antimicrobial stewardship.Funding: NoDisclosures: None

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction. This investigation explored 21st century stewardship of a late 20th century scientific oral history project through the lens of information practice. Oral history project stewardship and reuse are understudied. Literature review. Oral histories foreground human agency in the world. Often studied singly, many reflect an oral history project’s historiographic context. Stewardship documentation by multiple stakeholders accrues over time. The author developed an information practice analysis tool for systematic exploration of oral history stewardship documentation. Method. A case study approach and qualitative content analysis techniques guided investigation of documentation for an oral history project held at Science History Institute in Philadelphia. Textual data was collected for a purposive sample. Analysis and results. Multiple stakeholders’ documentation schema for the purposive sample were analysed in Excel and Word. Results coded five information work models for stakeholder information practices. Discussion. The information work models portrayed stakeholder information practices as mechanisms for stability in the stewardship of contextual assets, and mechanisms for transformation through staff knowledge, as situational assets. Conclusion. Information practice analysis of oral history stewardship in this case study systematised stakeholders’ and user perspectives on access. Implications for theory development lie in leveraging the stability and transformative agency of stewardship and reuse.

Abstract (sommario):
Background: The life-saving power of antibiotics could be lost forever if leaders fail to implement effective antibiotic stewardship programs at all healthcare levels. Grahams’ Knowledge to Action theory guided the development of an antibiotic stewardship program in a long-term care facility that had received a citation for having no active antibiotic stewardship program as required by federal regulations. Purpose: The purpose of this project was to develop and implement an evidence-based antibiotic stewardship program into one long-term care facility. Methods and Materials: This quality improvement project was a population-based systems charter development. The implementation intervention was designed to change the way health care professionals treat non-acute episodes of upper respiratory infections in a long-term care setting. This project utilized the suspected lower respiratory infection (LRI) Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation (SBAR) form to reduce the number of antibiotics given during the early part of cold and influenza season of 2018. An antibiotic stewardship policy was developed by multidisciplinary team members and then implemented into the facilities daily practice. Results: The point-prevalence rate of antibiotics within this facility dropped from 24% in 2017 to 6% in 2018 after implementation of the antibiotic stewardship program. Conclusion: This project demonstrates how long-term care facilities can successfully implement an antibiotic stewardship program and potentially improve overall healthcare outcomes for the residents.

Abstract (sommario):
Librarians are natural collaborators. As professionals we enjoy working with colleagues within the same institution and beyond. This is particularly fitting when it comes to collection development. Academic libraries strive to support the research needs of our users by providing access to a wide range of materials. In a world of shrinking budgets and limited staff, we turn to collaboration as a way to continue to deliver excellent services to our patrons. Collaborative partnerships between regional institutions or across state lines allow individual organizations to reallocate their resources and better serve the local needs. If you are ready to begin the planning stages of a collaborative collection development project, this book is a great starting point. Shared Collections: Collaborative Stewardship is a gathering of essays that discusses an array of cooperative collection development projects in a variety of institutions. It covers everything you need to know from how to create a partnership of shared collections (chapter 2) to specific examples of current projects covering everything from serials (chapter 4), monographs (chapters 6 and 8) and digital collections (chapter 7).

Abstract (sommario):
The idea of stewardship, which emphasizes the duty to look after and safeguard the Earth, has its roots in Christian teachings. In light of the circular economy, this article investigates the application of a community “TAKA project” that fosters stewardship. As a strategy for attaining sustainable growth and protecting the environment, the circular economy is garnering more and more attention. Businesses and individuals must align their operations and consumption habits to minimize or eradicate waste and pollution, while also recycling products and resources to restore the ecosystem. As stewards of the planet, humans must accept responsibility for the environment if the circular economy model is to be successfully implemented, which calls for community cooperation. This study examines the execution of a community “TAKA project” that addresses sustainable development in the local community and protects the environment by promoting stewardship through circularity principles. Through sustainable consumption and production, this TAKA project seeks to inform and include the local community, particularly schools. Pope Francis’ call to transform our “throw-away culture” is closely linked to the Christian concept of stewardship and its relationship to the circular economy. It highlights the significance of sustainable development and responsible resource management, which is in line with the biblical call to care for God’s creation by embracing the circular economy’s principles and actively participating in the community to reduce resource depletion and environmental degradation.

Abstract (sommario):
In 2004, the US Forest Service launched the Spatial Analysis Project (SAP) to determine whether lands enrolled in the Forest Stewardship Program meet state stewardship objectives. Within each state, SAP used an aggregate analysis to categorise all land available for the FSP as — low, medium, or high stewardship potential. We characterized differences in land classified by the SAP in the study area, and determined if states have been effectively enrolling lands in the high category. Results indicate that while states are enrolling high stewardship potential lands (p < 0.0001), prioritising among forest lands is difficult because nearly all of it is classified as high or medium stewardship potential. We suggest prioritising forested areas using ranking criteria that are more closely associated with state forestry priorities, a strategy that could be adapted to increase the impact of limited public forest stewardship resources outside of the region as well.

Abstract (sommario):
This study examined factors that contribute to the commitment of volunteers’ environmental stewardship through motivations, satisfaction, and generativity. Generativity, a focus on the next generation, has not been examined in the content of environmental stewardship. Volunteers for the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD) were surveyed online from May to September of 2016 (n = 1111). Through structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis, our findings validated six categories of motivations (helping the environment, project organization, values, learning, career, and social), four dimensions of satisfaction (organizational support, project organization, sense of empowerment, and group integration), and two factors of commitment (affective commitment and normative commitment). Our findings showed positive and significant path correlations for four latent variables (motivations, satisfaction, commitment, and generativity). This study contributes to the literature by showing the potential for generativity to contribute to environmental stewardship, and by enhancing stewardship efforts for agencies and organizations in recruiting and engaging volunteers.

Abstract (sommario):
In 1978, the Federal government passed the Forestry Assistance Act which provides guidelines for states to support management on non-industrial private lands through the Forest Stewardship Program (FSP). In 1983, Illinois passed the Illinois Forestry Development Act which outlines the specific requirements for non-industrial private landowners residing in Illinois to take advantage of the FSP. Since the inception of the program, there has been little analysis to determine the quality of land enrolled in the FSP. Launched in 2004, the Spatial Analysis Project is a program sponsored by the US Forest Service to determine the type of land enrolled within FSP. Within each state, the SAP used an aggregate analysis based upon multiple criteria to divide all land available for the FSP into three categories - low, medium, and high stewardship potential. The objective of this project was twofold, first to determine if Illinois is effectively enrolling lands in the high stewardship potential category. Secondly, because timber production must be the primary goal of a FSP plan in Illinois, this study analyzed whether lands classified as high stewardship potential were also high in forest productivity. Results indicate that while Illinois is effectively enrolling high stewardship potential lands, these lands are not necessarily highly productive. This information could be used to give preference for cost-share assistance to those lands that are classified as highly productive, particularly in times when funding is limited, rather than on a first come, first served basis.

Abstract (sommario):
The Desert Solitaire curriculum was designed as a basis for exploring Edward Abbey's book, of the same name, in a high school field ecology class. Students read the book over a period of six weeks during the middle of the school year. Lessons were designed to aid students in exploring their home ecosystem, the Mojave Desert, via comparison with Arches National Monument as described in Desert Solitaire. This exploration fosters in students a sense of place and connection with their home environment. With little alteration, the curriculum can be used by students to examine their own ecosystem, even if it is not a desert. Furthermore, this curriculum can be used for delving into environmental issues, exploring environmental values and/or beliefs, or as an introduction to the genre of nature literature.

Abstract (sommario):

Kuehnle, Renee. "Pilot Project: Adaptive Strategies for Sustainable Rural Development". Thesis, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/7886.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The outport is in the midst of great change. Twenty years since the moratorium on cod fishing, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador is experiencing rapid economic development in another industrial resource boom. While some outports are growing, others continue to decline. This development is based on wealth gained through exploitation of non-renewable resources, and as such, is not sustainable. Investing a portion of these short-term gains into the development of sustainable alternates will improve opportunities and resources for future generations. Pilot Project proposes that latent outport phenomena may act as supporting structures for sustainable development. The project suggests methods of identifying and expanding sustainable outport phenomena. This analysis can be distilled into five strategic tools for testing, designing and implementing sustainable rural development. 1. Territorial Networks defines a diverse region, increasing individual community capacity and developing resilience by examining existing micro-regional community connections and designing new ones. 2. Community Stewardship encourages a re-organization of local social structures and informal governance initiatives by defining communication pathways and aligning stakeholder interests. 3. Temporal Alignment co-ordinates the events, services and opportunities over time, between communities, by creating flexible infrastructure for supporting temporary and seasonal outport needs. 4. Informal Economies develops new modes of production by blending traditional trade and barter markets with industrial production frameworks, providing economic sustenance in the outport. 5. Place-making constructs new institutions and landmarks with available resources, reorganizing the rural web of social, economic and ecological activity in the region. Newfoundland operates at the extremes. On one hand, rural folk culture has established small-scale, informal community structures; on the other, industrial mega-projects develop according to strict legislation, market pricing, and resource extraction. The proposed strategies find new links between these extremes. Tried and true vernacular development methods are paired with newly emerging technologies and ideas about the future. Rural areas in Newfoundland have historically been used as testing grounds for heavy-handed development ideas, often with severely adverse effects on communities. This project proposes a series of micro developments: the mobilization of existing resources with small capital investment, little risk, and immediate opportunities for implementation. Sustainable rural development is conceived as a practice, an aggregative change from within the community.

Carrara, Elena. "SAVE ‘Stewardship Antibiotica Verona’: a quality improvement project to reduce in-hospital antibiotic consumption in a setting with a high level of antimicrobial resistance". Doctoral thesis, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11562/1046021.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Background: According to recent estimates from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Italy is the European country with the highest disease burden due to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). In line with the recommendations from the National Plan for Combating Antibiotic Resistance in Italy, in June 2018, the Verona University hospital started a quality improvement Antibiotic Stewardship (AS) intervention aimed at reducing antibiotic consumption and infections sustained by targeted AMR pathogens. Methods: The core elements of the SAVE (Stewardship Antibiotica VErona) intervention were: I. Qualitative assessment of determinants of antibiotic prescribing via a 21-item questionnaire; II. provision of a full-time Infectious Disease specialist to the intervention ward for 12 weeks; III. mandatory CME-accredited training for at least two physicians per intervention ward; IV. development of customized guidance on empirical antibiotic therapy, and V. nine months of periodic audits and feedbacks targeting inappropriate prescriptions. The primary outcome of the intervention was to show a reduction in the overall consumption of systemic antibiotics (ATC-J01) measured as Days of Therapy (DOTs) and Daily Defined Doses (DDDs) per 1000 patient-days (PDs). Secondary outcomes were carbapenems and fluoroquinolones consumption, all-cause in-hospital mortality, mean length of hospital stay, the incidence of Clostridium difficile infections, and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae bloodstream infections. The AS intervention's effect on monthly antibiotic consumption, clinical and microbiological outcomes was assessed with an interrupted-time-series analysis comparing the 12-month pre-intervention phase with the 21-month following the intervention’s start. Results: from June 2018 to March 2020, four medical wards completed the follow-up, 57 medical doctors participated in the initial assessment questionnaire, eight non-Infectious Disease physicians were trained in antibiotic prescribing, and 1116 prescriptions were revised during the audit and feedback phase. The AS intervention was associated with a significant immediate reduction in the level of overall antibiotic consumption, measured both in terms of DOTs*1000 PDs (-162.2; P=0.005) and DDDs*1000 PDs (-183.6; P=<0.001). During the whole post-intervention phase, consumption kept decreasing with a monthly rate of 3.6 DDD*100PDs (P= 0.04) and 3.36 DOTs*1000PDs (P=0.03). Reduction in consumption was consistent also in the two target antibiotic classes (-35.5 DOTs*1000PDs for fluoroquinolones and - 23.1 DOTs*1000PDs for carbapenems, P=0.03 and 0.003 respectively). However, while the fluoroquinolones class maintained a long-term significant reduction (-2.1 DOTs*1000PDs, P=0.016), carbapenem consumption remained approximately stable during the whole post-intervention period (-0.04 DOTs*1000PDs, P>0.05). The AS intervention was also associated with a significant early reduction in the mean length of hospital stay (-1.72 days P<0.001) and all-cause mortality rates (-3.71 deaths*100 admissions) with a significant decrease of the trend in the post-intervention period compared to the pre-intervention period (- 0.17 days per month and -0,26 death*100 admissions per month; P= 0.012 and 0.001). Rates of Clostridium difficile and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae bloodstream infections tended to reduce, although non-significantly, in both the early and the long-term phase after the intervention. Conclusions: The SAVE intervention was effective and safe in reducing antibiotic consumption and length of hospital-stay in four medical wards. Although results are promising, more observations and a more extended follow-up period might be needed to demonstrate the AS program's decisive effect in reducing AMR's clinical burden.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractAntigua and Barbuda is currently experiencing an expansion in integrated waste management driven by local community groups. These events are catalytic and transformational, fit well into SEPLS methodologies, and contribute to many of the biodiversity targets and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With waste being a direct driver of and major challenge for biodiversity, climate change and land degradation, many positive multi-dimensional impacts are being seen, realised and manifested that contribute positively to reducing land-based sources of pollution through community stewardship. Such local actions positively impact the sustainable management of natural resources and the protection of habitats. Likewise, they support land degradation neutrality, protection and safeguarding of the ecosystems that provide our soil, air and water resources, sustain livelihoods, and facilitate transfer of knowledge to children and youth. This attempt to pilot a circular economy approach is providing vocational and life skills training, as well as income generation for the local community, including new forms of capacity building and development, while reducing soil, water and air pollution. Public-private partnerships built through this project are motivating other groups to follow a similar path to biodiversity transformation. Changes in attitudes and behaviours, and the building of knowledge and capacities in the next generation, is taking place through school and community outreach programmes. The project has led to community empowerment in understanding that everyone has a role to play in sustainable development and that through collective actions, changes to improve public health can be made.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract This chapter offers an overview of climate change education strategies across four distinct educational stages in Africa, focusing on the proposed frameworks tailored for each level. Rather than analysing the current state of climate change teaching, it introduces innovative approaches designed to enhance educational practices and outcomes. These frameworks were developed to provide adaptable solutions that can be customized to meet the specific needs of different educational contexts within the continent. The Pre-Primary Education framework encompasses childhood awareness, nature activities, environmental stewardship, social media showcase, behaviour impact, and attitude shifts. Primary schools prioritize integrative methods, cohesive teaching blueprints, hurdle addressing, educator development, and hands-on guidance. At the post-secondary level, the framework emphasizes the importance of academic research, specialized courses, climate research labs, industry project collaborations, and active engagement in Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Technical Societies such as Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The framework within Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions encompasses the integration of syllabus incorporation, experiential education, cross-disciplinary methodology, industrial collaborations, pedagogical enhancement, climate-adaptive competencies, stimulating innovations, assessment and oversight, international collaboration, and vocational counsel. Secondary schools emphasize the integration of different disciplines, specialized elective courses, discussions about the benefits, evaluation of the impact of electives, functionality of extracurricular activities, and outstanding achievements. The conclusion emphasizes the crucial significance of climate change education at all levels, with future directions focusing on policy modifications, research, and continuous endeavours. Suggestions involve integrating visual aids, such as charts and graphs, to demonstrate the progress of climate change education programs and measures such as school acceptance rates, student engagement, and influence on awareness. This framework offers customized strategies for each educational level with the goal of developing an ecologically aware generation capable of tackling the intricate challenges of climate change in Africa.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe islands of São Tomé and Príncipe host extraordinary biodiversity that evolved over millions of years without human presence. In the fifteenth century, the colonization of the islands created a society of migrants, associated with extensive land-use change and generally low knowledge and stewardship of autochthonous biodiversity. Formal education became widely accessible after the country’s independence but the curriculum has never been aligned with the natural heritage of the islands. Informal environmental education started in the 1990s alongside the pioneer conservation initiatives involving the scientific community. In the last decade, these efforts have multiplied, in line with the need to engage and involve local actors to promote stewardship and ensure the success of conservation efforts. Some changes were made recently at a formal level with the inclusion of environmental education curricula and new manuals. In addition, several initiatives and improvements are being developed in the private education sector. However, limited access to resources for educators reduces motivation and capacity to implement longer-term improvements. Most environmental education activities are still promoted by NGOs and mainly focus on endemic or threatened species and target school-age audiences. Other initiatives focusing on specific demographic groups have provided interesting results but are more intermittent and their impacts have largely not yet been evaluated. Improving formal assessments for current and future projects to assess impacts and refine future approaches will be essential moving forward. In addition, ensuring the involvement of local actors, coordination between different initiatives, and the use of diversified approaches will ensure that environmental education engages the widest possible audiences.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractSmoke plume dynamic science focuses on understanding the various smoke processes that control the movement and mixing of smoke. A current challenge facing this research is providing timely and accurate smoke information for the increasing area burned by wildfires in the western USA. This chapter synthesizes smoke plume research from the past decade to evaluate the current state of science and identify future research needs. Major advances have been achieved in measurements and modeling of smoke plume rise, dispersion, transport, and superfog; interactions with fire, atmosphere, and canopy; and applications to smoke management. The biggest remaining gaps are the lack of high-resolution coupled fire, smoke, and atmospheric modeling systems, and simultaneous measurements of these components. The science of smoke plume dynamics is likely to improve through development and implementation of: improved observational capabilities and computational power; new approaches and tools for data integration; varied levels of observations, partnerships, and projects focused on field campaigns and operational management; and new efforts to implement fire and stewardship strategies and transition research on smoke dynamics into operational tools. Recent research on a number of key smoke plume dynamics has improved our understanding of coupled smoke modeling systems, modeling tools that use field campaign data, real-time smoke modeling and prediction, and smoke from duff burning. This new research will lead to better predictions of smoke production and transport, including the influence of a warmer climate on smoke.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe number of people living in rural areas of low and middle-income countries is projected to increase in the coming decades. It is in the rural areas of these countries where a large majority of the world’s extreme poor reside. The livelihoods of two to three billion rural people depend on small farms. These small farms are responsible for the production and supply of a large portion of the calories feeding low- and middle-income countries. Small farms are also preservers of crops and associated biodiversity and with the right incentives can contribute to land stewardship. Small farms are diverse, and, hence, so are their associated challenges. We categorize small farms as commercial farms, small farms in transition and subsistence-oriented farms and highlight evidence-based innovations for the sustainable transformation of each type of small farm. Broadly, small farms face high transaction costs, lack collective action, and experience coordination failure in production and marketing. Lack of market access is also a major challenge. Investments in infrastructure, including those that support access to digital technologies, can improve farmers’ access to markets and incentives as well as foster growth in the midstream segments of the value chain that provide inputs, storage, processing, and logistics to small farms. Rural Non-Farm Employment (RNFE) is increasingly the main source of income for most small farmers and provides them with a risk diversification strategy and cash, both to purchase food and for farm investments to raise productivity, expand commercial activities, and produce higher-value products. Public investments and policies that facilitate growth of the agrifood system must pay more attention to creating enabling environments for the development of RNFE and strengthening the synergy between agriculture and RNFE in rural areas.

Abstract (sommario):
Universitas Dhyana Pura (Undhira) has been involved in various research and community empowerment projects in Catur Village, Kintamani, Bangli, Bali. However, no projects in Catur Village have specifically reached the village youths until 2020. Hence, this article discusses developing an empowerment project called the Youth Environmental Stewardship program in Catur Village (YES Catur). Using the Logical Framework Approach (LFA), the authors describe the underlying problem the village youths face, such as a lack of self-efficacy and awareness of micro and macro-environmental issues facing them and their generation. Furthermore, the LFA became the overarching goal of empowering the youths through an environmental stewardship education program, encouraging positive self-view and worldview, the resources and activities designed to engage them, and the intended outputs and outcomes from the project. From this pilot project, the youths are expected to realize their true potential as they appreciate the great natural potential in their village, especially in ecology. They were encouraged to take on active roles in environmental stewardship (including eco-entrepreneurship and circular economy). Finally, they can share about themselves and their village through storytelling and photography to showcase their potential and share about sustainability issues.

Abstract (sommario):
Our identity as architects is still bound with the image of nature that places architecture and other human constructs strictly outside of a “wild” nature that is pure, vibrant, and untamed. This has resulted in nostalgic, exclusionary eco-narratives that curtail the architectural imagination. Understanding our role as part of an evolving ecology and its omnipresent human influence has the potential to rein¬vigorate the practice. Coexisting as interdependent entities (both physical and conceptual), landscape and technology can define built form that imagines productive and healthy infrastructures for a collective ecology. This paper describes the first of a set of studios run by the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning Ecological Practices Graduate Research Group, its collabora¬tion with a parallel techniques course, and a local partner and the design build project it initiated, Silo City Trellis. The studio explored how to formulate an eco-centric identity through small scale architectural interventions, garden struc¬tures that literally and figuratively entwine themselves with the local ecology of a site that is at once a burgeoning “urban wild” and a monument to the city’s post-industrial heritage. This apparently wild site is in fact a garden. Maintained and curated, it highlights the effort it takes to maintain a “natu¬ral” environment in the highly synthetic urban context. The architecture of the garden makes it into an interface where the boundaries between nature and the man-made are perpetually negotiated providing a pedagogical model that proposes alternative ideologies about our ecosystems-both environmental and socio-political. Silo City Trellis is a combined structure and landscape regen¬eration system that literally entwines architecture earth and vegetation. Emulating the work of the site’s Director of Ecology the growing infrastructure aims to suggest ecocentric solutions for the future of cities by pushing the boundaries of architecture as a provider of ecosystem services and social stewardship. The proposal envisions that in a post-nature environment architecture can play a role not only in societal enlightenment but also in the intentional cultivation and stewardship of biological ecologies.

Abstract (sommario):
Recent developments in the application of spatial information technologies have brought opportunities for dramatic improvements in speed, accuracy and cost-effectiveness of production of pipeline project deliverables. In addition to the potential for design and construction improvements, life cycle improvements are found through the use of spatial data relating to pipeline operation, environmental stewardship, regulatory, public and other stakeholder communications. However, these opportunities have not been consistently captured on all pipeline jobs. Part of the challenge in the introduction of new technology is to align members of the team so that skills and assigned tasks are matched. Traditionally, pipeline design and construction projects have employed a proven team organization structure. Changes to the tradition are necessary. This paper discusses the main advantages of using spatial information on a pipeline project. Furthermore, a discussion of the various project team roles explores how to leverage the new technologies effectively. Examples drawn from the largest pipeline projects currently in process will highlight the lessons learned to date.

Abstract (sommario):
The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is responsible for stewardship of approximately 12.5 million acres across the United States. USACE’s Environmental Stewardship program mission is to protect, preserve, and restore significant ecological resources on USACE project lands. Since the early 2000s, non-native and invasive Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) has killed hundreds of millions of ash trees in the US, becoming the most destructive and costly invasive forest insect in North America. This research effort estimates the cost of managing EAB damage to USACE projects including treatment, removal, or removal and replacement of dying/dead ash trees. The results suggest potential impact to more than 122,800 USACE project acres in currently infested counties including 181,000 ash trees. While not all damaged trees require removal, many USACE recreation sites have ash trees that pose an increased risk to humans and structures thus requiring removal of EAB infected trees. The widespread and pervasive impacts of EAB will have significant costs associated with removal and replacement of ash trees that could be hazardous to recreational users at the projects. Data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) database, and methods developed by Kovacs et al. (2010) were utilized to calculate yearly present value costs of EAB to USACE projects from 2006-2026. Overall EAB impacts are estimated at $121.6 million across 201 USACE projects evaluated in this study. Increased efforts to limit EAB spread and perform measures of control are warranted to reduce potential cost to USACE.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This report explains scenario planning as a climate change adaptation tool in general, then describes how it was applied to Wind Cave National Park as the second part of a pilot project to dovetail climate change scenario planning with National Park Service (NPS) Resource Stewardship Strategy development. In the orientation phase, Park and regional NPS staff, other subject-matter experts, natural and cultural resource planners, and the climate change core team who led the scenario planning project identified priority resource management topics and associated climate sensitivities. Next, the climate change core team used this information to create a set of four divergent climate futures—summaries of relevant climate data from individual climate projections—to encompass the range of ways climate could change in coming decades in the park. Participants in the scenario planning workshop then developed climate futures into robust climate-resource scenarios that considered expert-elicited resource impacts and identified potential management responses. Finally, the scenario-based resource responses identified by park staff and subject matter experts were used to integrate climate-informed adaptations into resource stewardship goals and activities for the park's Resource Stewardship Strategy. This process of engaging resource managers in climate change scenario planning ensures that their management and planning decisions are informed by assessments of critical future climate uncertainties.

Chass?, Michael. Restoring the endangered San Francisco lessingia to Fort Funston, GGNRA: Final project completion report. National Park Service, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/2302635.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
San Francisco lessingia (lessingia germanorum) is an endangered plant species found in dune habitats on the northern San Francisco Peninsula of California, USA. Expanding habitat for this species through dune restoration is a key component of its recovery plan. The Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) established a project to reintroduce San Francisco lessingia to potential habitat at Fort Funston. We (park staff, contractors, and volunteers) prepared restoration areas through invasive plant removal and installation of protective fencing. Over a three-year period, we collected seeds of San Francisco lessingia from the Daly City population throughout the summer fruiting season. GGNRA nursery staff propagated San Francisco lessingia and other associated dune plants, which were planted and direct seeded at Fort Funston. A monthly volunteer stewardship program was established to support ongoing habitat restoration at Fort Funston. Park staff have initiated annual monitoring of San Francisco lessingia. As of the writing of this report, a small population of San Francisco lessingia has persisted in the primary reintroduction site. Although it is too early to determine if the reintroduction is successful in the long term, the restored dune habitats now support a more diverse dune flora with greatly reduced invasive plant threats.

Abstract (sommario):
There are two methods broadly used for sediments and water (S and W) content determination, centrifuge method, and the Karl Fischer titration. They consume a significant quantity of toxic hazardous solvents such as Toluene, o-xylene, and chloroform. These particular solvents impose great risk to the health of the frontline workers and generate large amounts of liquid waste disposal, a detrimental effect on the environment. PRCI MEAS-16-01 Project Team has identified the need to study the feasibility of solvent replacement for the current methods used for measuring the S and W contents in crude samples. The proposed project seeks to reduce the use of hazardous and toxic solvents, aid in environmental stewardship, and increase the health and safety of frontline workers while in operation.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper focuses on the implementation of corporate sustainability, or Environment, Social and Governance, reporting. The introduction from 2023 of mandatory reporting is a key milestone in sustainability. Adopting a comparative case method, we identify as related case studies Materiality (in reporting), Transition (in corporate strategy), and Stewardship (in fund management). We compare these by applying the theory-led themes of system openness, the agency or power of coalitions in producing and acting upon reports, contests in the qualification of key data, and through business exchanges related to or enabled by sustainability reports. Drawing on a two-year applied project, we elaborate upon policy, regulation, business and industrial markets, and business relationships. We find that Materiality is the most stable and well-framed system. It produces key outcomes in depicting a reporting company’s sustainability risks and opportunities. Transition is the most open, influenced by global and jurisdiction task forces, for example tasked with achieving net zero policy obligations. Stewardship in the UK articulates a set of principles, which guide fund managers in engaging with investee companies. We conclude that sustainability policy is at the same time setting in progress the forming of three systems, corresponding to this paper’s three case studies. Each has its own development, function and sets of facts, though each is beginning to achieve its function through interactions and exchanges with the other two.
