Certral dopaminergic system involves two major physiological functions, i.e., motivational activity and motor coordination. It is generally believed that the mesolimbic dopaminergic pathway is mainly concerned with the expression of motivated behavior, while, the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway is mostly related to motor coordination. The evidence that serotonergic system can modulate the function of these two pathways suggests that serotonin (5-HT) and related agents may possess potential therapeutic value on certain mental or motor disorders caused by imbalance of the dopaminergic system. This investigatin was designed to test the modulatory effect of several serotonergic agents on behaviors thought to be related to the dopaminergic system. In Experiment 1, four serotonergic agents, including DOI (5-HT2 agonist), amperozide and ritanserin (5-HT2 antagonist), and MDL72222(5-HT3 antagonist), were tested on animals with increased locomotion induced by two dopamine agonists, amphetamine and nomifensine. It was found that amperozide, ritanserin and MDL72222 inhibited motor activity induced by amphetamine, and that amperozide and MDL72222, but not ritanserin, inhibited motor activity induced by nomifensine. In Experiment 2, the same agents were administered to animals of haloperidol-induced catalepsy model. It revealed that only DOI and amperozide reduced the degree of rigidity significantly, but not ritanserin and MDL72222. In Experiment 3, the effect of amperozide on rearing and sniffing (with head switch) behaviors of the animal enhanced by treatment of amphetamine or nomifensine was assessed. The former behavior was considered to be a locomotive activity and the latter stereotyped. The result is that amperozide significantly reduced the frequency of rearing but not that of sniffing -head switch Furthermore, amperozide was tested on the circling behavior induced by amphetamine with the animal bearing right-sided lesion either on the striatum or on the nucleus accumbens. It was found that amperozide reduced the frequency of both right and left turns in the striatal-lesioned rats, and reduced right but not of left turns in the accumbens-lesioned group. The result suggest that amperozide may exert greater influence on the mesolimbic than on the nigrostriatal pathway. Finally in Experiment 4, it was demonstrated that amperozide increased extracellular content of dopamine in the striatum and nucleus accumbens as measured by the technique of microdialysis Depletion of 5-HT with p-CPA did not affect the result. It is therefore concluded that the modulatory role of amperozide may not only be dependent upon its 5-HT2 antagonistic actions but also block the dopamine uptake transporter.

Testo completoPsychomotor therapy is one of the supports offered to persons with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD), within institutional context. As psychomotor therapists we are confronted with multiple methodologies and strategies in order to stimulate psychomotor and functional competences of persons with IDD, through personalized and adjusted interventions to each person’ expectations and characteristics. This is even more challenging with adults with significant support needs, that (almost) unable the “traditional” therapeutic intervention. Sensory focused activities seem to be one of the interaction forms with this subgroup. Both interventions aim to provide opportunities to explore and interact with the environment. In this sense, it was felt the need to deepen the knowledge about possible contributions of psychomotor therapy focused in sensory-based activities in adaptive behavior of adults with IDD and significant supports needs. This article goal is to offer a theoretical literature review about how sensory-based activities can be used as a resource in psychomotor therapy for a more adapted and functional daily life.
In Portugal, institutions that provide support to persons with Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IDD) with significant support needs, are being reorganized according to newest paradigms. Psychomotor therapists are being facing an emergent need to validate practices towards a more functional and social participated of these persons for a life with quality. At national level, research has been directed for good practices’ validation. This article goal is to analyses the effects of a psychomotor program based on sensory activities in adaptive and challenging behavior, sensoriomotor area and supports needs of 9 participants, from 17 to 56 years, with IDD and significant support needs. All participants were evaluated with the Portuguese version of Adaptive Behavior, and a sensoriomotor checklist. Based on baseline results a 5-month program, with 24 individual sessions and 20 group session, was designed and adjusted to participant’s characteristics and interests. Although there are no statistical differences, was possible to verify qualitative improvements in the decrease of desajustments. Implications for psychomotor therapist practices will be presented.

Testo completoArticle 1: Adaptive Behavior and Psychomotor Competences in Quality of Life of children with developmental disorders: psychomotor Abstract: The functional and ecological approach of the Rehabilitation model aims at understanding human functioning in its multidimensionality, based on an interactive support system leading to positive personal outcomes. The increasing interest for adaptive behavior (AB) and supports needs as main predictors of quality of life (QoL), have been influencing services and institutions’ reorganization towards functionality and social participation of people with developmental disorders. This new paradigm is also been applied to psychomotor therapist intervention. Although some recent research in the evaluation of psychomotor intervention, it still lacks more knowledge about adaptive behavior and psychomotor profiles of children with developmental disorders. Therefore, the present article, based on literature review, aims to frame the possible contribution of psychomotor intervention, as one of the supports provided to children with intellectual and developmental disabilities or cerebral palsy, on AB and psychomotor factors development, trying to analyses its impact in their quality of life.
Abstract: The recent paradigm in rehabilitation is focused on the provision of individualized supports for a more independent living and a better quality of life (QoL). The interest for the measurement of psychomotor intervention’ effectiveness is been growing, especially with adults (with intellectual disabilities). Research with children is still scarce. This article aims to analyze the psychomotor and adaptive competences of 6 children from Mozambique, between 6 and 13 years, 2 females and 4 males, with developmental disorders, trying to see its impact in their QoL. All were institutionalized. Both Portuguese versions of Adaptive Behavior Scale, Children’ Personal Outcomes Scale and Psychomotor Battery were applied in three different moments. Baseline results allowed the design of a psychomotor program adjusted to participants. Final evaluation gave some clues about the effectiveness of the intervention and retention assessment provided the analysis of the importance of such intervention. Results of final evaluation showed significant differences in some adaptive domains, indicating improvements maintained even when the program ended one month after. Body awareness and gross motor skills were the psychomotor domains that increased positively and without changes in retention assessment. These improvements had impact in QoL global index. Suggestions to practice and research are presented.
Master's thesis, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10400.5/18245.
Testo completoThe new paradigm within the field of intellectual and developmental disability (IDD), which results from the need to consider both as criteria - intellectual and adaptive limitations, for the IDD diagnosis’, moved the focus from “individual deficiency” to the quality of interaction between person (with IDD) and his/her environment. The adjustment of supports provision assume a capital and a mediator role: persons with IDD tend to exhibit different supports profile needs than their typical peers, with repercussions on quality of life (QOL). Adaptive limitations impact the person-environment mismatch extension, which is reflected in (greater) supports needs. QOL is also influenced by the adjustment of supports profile provision. Therefore, the analysis of the relation between all these three constructs is important for a comprehensive understanding if QOL is directly related with better adaptive performances and, consequently, with less support needs. Recently, literature has been showing some evidences about this theoretical analysis, but as far as we are concerned there is no study that allows us to have evidences on this hypothesis. Therefore, this article goal is to make an extensive literature review about the three constructs and their possible relation. The final goal is to analyses how psychomotor therapy can play its role as an effective support in person with IDD-life plan.
The increased scientific recognition of Quality of Life (QOL) and adaptive behavior constructs implies changes in practice aligned with the supports person-centred provision. The alignment between these constructs has been recently proven at theoretical level but it still lacks of practical evidences-based. This article’ goal is to analyses the practical relations among measures of all constructs, through the examination how psychomotor therapy, as one of the supports provided, to adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IDD), can contribute for a better adaptive behavior and for a life with more quality. The three Portuguese versions of Adaptive Behavior Scale, Supports Intensity Scale and Personal Outcomes scale were applied to 11 adults with IDD, between 24 and 45 years (32.64 ± 6.92), five females and six males, institutionalized. All participants were assessed in three different moments: before and after intervention, and one month later for the retention assessment. Baseline results allowed the planning and implementation of a 6-month gym psychomotor program, with weekly sessions of 50 minutes. Results showed better adaptive level and positive personal outcomes, as well a reduction of supports needs. Psychomotor therapy may have positive effects on independent functioning level of adults with IDD. Further, results pointed out a positive and moderate correlation between QOL and adaptive behavior but negative and moderate with supports needs.

Testo completoPsychomotor intervention promotes the individual global development through movement and play activities. Considering that individuals in the Autism Spectrum Disorders may have a compromise at the motor and behavioral functioning domains, as well as repetitive and stereotyped interests, communication limitations and difficulties in interpersonal relationships, psychomotor intervention purpose is the promotion of such domains by using body-mind centred activities. Considering that psychomotor intervention strategy focused on the creation of strong relationships characterized by a security, trust, empathic relation with the individual, since it is expected that such qualities acts as a facilitator in the intervention process and outcome results. This report describe the work developed during the school year of 2014/2015 with children and young students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other associated comorbidities, from three Units of Structured Teaching on the Group of Schools Dr. Azevedo Neves in the Municipality of Amadora. Also, present in this report, is a literature review on the Autism Spectrum Disorders and psychomotor practice guidelines, the legal and institutional framework, the description of the students supported with a special focus on two case studies, receiving psychomotor intervention both individually and in group settings. Likewise, the process of intervention and evaluation is presented. After the intervention process, it was possible to determine psychomotor and behavioral individual progress.
Article 1: Adaptive Behavior and Psychomotor Therapy - The functionality approach in Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IDD) is a comprehensive perspective of human functioning, including intellectual and adaptive dimensions, support systems and personal outcomes, emphasizing the dynamic and interactive nature of assessment and classification, among others. Across time, intelligence criteria variation has been minimal, being more relevant the changes in adaptive behavior conceptualization as an IDD diagnosis criteria, in its factorial structure and which cut-off scores allow the diagnosis. In last 50 years, adaptive behavior concept’ has evolved from a “undefined” term to a measurable construct. Further, research is adding more knowledge to its factor structure and measurement, and scientific evidences points out the muldimensionality of the concept: cognitive, practical and social. Latest definition of IDD gives the same importance to both constructs of intellectual and adaptive functioning, indicating an interdependent and weighed equally relation, and both constructs assessment should be performed by validated and standardized instruments. Within the new paradigm and according to an emergent need of such instruments in adaptive behavior area, this article aims to define and characterize adaptive behavior construct as well its role to diagnosis. Moreover, it is our goal a better understanding of how adaptive and functional learning can be stimulated by psychomotor therapy.
Article 2: Psychometric Properties of the Escala de Diagnóstico de Comportamento Adaptativo - Adaptive behavior has been formally included as one the three criterion for the diagnosis of Intellectual and Developmental Disability (IDD). Nevertheless, its conceptualization and measurement are still emerging, and the cut-off scores (two standard-deviations below mean) should be established through validated and standardized evaluation instruments. This article aims to made a preliminary study on psychometric properties of a new scale of adaptive behavior for IDD diagnosis purpose. For this matter, 79 participants between 16 and 21 years (19.44±.87), 48 females and 31 males, with and without IDD, were evaluated with the 75-items of the Portuguese version of the scale. Further, 36 participants were evaluated also by the Portuguese version of Adaptive Behavior Scale. Results allowed the validity and reliability analysis of the scale: content validity indexes of all items, average and universal agreement of scale were above .71, with a strong agreement proportion among the 7 experts (≥.83). Kappa scores showed moderated to strong agreement (k>.45). Criterion validity, through the comparison of both scale, presented moderate to strong correlation coeficientes (.43≥r≤.83). In reliability field, were analysed the internal consistency (=.99and time stability (r≥.64) with very good scores. Construct validity was analyzed through the domains correlation (.94≥r.≤1) and an exploratory factorial analysis was performed indicating the adaptive behavior construct multidimensionality. Conclusions are presented as well limitations and suggestion for research.
As principais conclusões e recomendações serão apresentadas.
Article 1: Adaptive Behavior, focused on the quality of daily interaction between person and environment has become increasingly important in the newest definitions and comprehensive approach of intellectual and developmental disability (IDD), highlighting an ecological framework. Ensuring a better understanding of IDD as well as a multidimensional approach to human functioning, the introduction of the adaptive behavior construct and its assessment is demanding new and more adjusted interventions, emphasizing the relationship between intellectual and adaptive skills as well as the type of supports needed, for a more independent functioning and social participation. Psychomotor Therapy uses movement as a therapeutic tool and body as the mediating variable, through a wide range of movement activities for personal adaptation to community settings. Psychomotor Therapy is one of the services and supports provided, to people with IDD, in institutions and it can be applied within several environments such as water, due to its properties which allow different and new adjusted psychomotor experiences. This article aims to contribute for an theoretical framework on the contribution of psychomotor intervention in an aquatic environment in both adaptive behavior and aquatic skills of adolescents and adults with intellectual and developmental difficulties.
Article 2: Nowadays, Psychomotor Therapy is one of the supports most provided to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in institutional contexts. Nevertheless, the need for its effectiveness assessment is still needed, due to scarce scientific evidences on the field. The aquatic environment provides varied experiences, feelings and learnings that contribute to personal development. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the contribution of a psychomotor therapy program in water, on the adaptive behavior and aquatic skills of 4 adolescents between 14 and 17 years (15:25 ± 1:26) and 4 adults between 24 and 45 years (34.50 ± 9:33), 6 male, with IDD, all institutionalized. All participants were evaluated in three different moments (baseline, post-intervention and one month after the intervention) through the Portuguese version of Adaptive Behavior Scale - and Aquatic Environment Checklist. Based on the baseline evaluation results, a 6-month aquatic psychomotor intervention program was planned and implemented, with one to two sessions of 45 min per week. Although results did not show significant differences, qualitative improvements were observed in daily life activities and in some aquatic skills. Main conclusions and recommendations to research and practice will be presented.

Testo completoThis study aims (1) to analyze the antecedents of Entrepreneurial Intentions (EI) of Psychomotor Rehabilitation students of the Faculty of Human Kinetics of both cycles of teaching and (2) to analyze Entrepreneurial Intentions of students according to their sociodemographic characteristics. The sample included a total of 130 students, to whom was applied an adapted version of the Questionnaire of Entrepreneurial Intentions (EIQ: Liñán & Chen, 2009) which is based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB: Ajzen, 1991) and includes the following dimensions: Entrepreneurial Intentions (EI), Perceived Attitude (PA), Perceived Behavioral Control (PBC) and Subjective Norms (SN). Linear regression tests were conducted to identify which dimensions of the TPB influence EI. Later, t-student tests were conducted to compare the mean values of the four dimensions of TPB according to gender, entrepreneurial knowledge, sports practice, professional experience, participation in student associations and cycle of teaching. The results showed that the most significant antecedents of EI are PA and PBC and that there are major EI in the students who already have professional experience, practice/practiced a sport and that know an entrepreneur. These results suggest that by influencing some of these aspects it is possible to increase students’ EI.
