Operation RUMAN was the UK response in the Autumn of 2017 to the Category 5 Hurricane IRMA, which affected the British Overseas Territories in the Caribbean. Despite significant challenges and a relatively suboptimal start line position, the Operation was a success from a medical perspective, with lower than expected dNBI rates. In this paper, we present, formalize and prove the correctness of recovery algorithm for our open and safe nested transaction model using I/O automaton model. Our nested transaction model uses the notion of a recovery point subtransaction in the nested transaction tree. It introduces a prewrite operation before each write operation to increase the potential concurrency. Our transaction model is termed as "open and safe" as prewrites allow early reads (before database writes on disk) without cascading aborts. The systems restart and buffer management operations are modelled as nested transactio

ABSTRACT In July 1978, several homes near the Burlington Northern Railroad yards in North La Crosse reported fuel oil in their basements. High water tables and flooding along the La Crosse River caused seepage into the basements. The nearby railroad refueling depot was the only likely source of the product. A review of railroad activities indicated several likely sources for fuel oil leakage into the soil. A contractor was hired and a recovery system was installed. The recovery system removed about 300 gallons of fuel oil per day. Because of several operational problems, this recovery system w

Should we let this controversy continue or is it time to put together different pieces of the puzzle to reach at least a semblance of a solution? The latter is the purpose of this paper. Historically, only a small percentage of the oil from major spills is ever recovered. For example, during the Deepwater Horizon incident, skimming operations only accounted for approximately 3% of the spilled oil. This low number was due to the delayed response of assets as well as the use of inefficient skimming systems and methods. The result was that a portion of the stem with potential sawlog volume was being converted into lower value pulpwood. Although the value loss was relatively small, the length measureme

Abstract (sommario):
The Bruks mobile chipper was tested for chipping extracted non-merchantable stemwood at the roadside in Pine plantation in Victoria. The elemental time study method was used to evaluate the system productivity. The productivity, cost, biomass yield, remaining slash, chip quality (size classification and energy content), and fuel and energy consumption were analysed. Chipping extracted small logs at the roadside yielded a productivity of 43.88 GMt·PMH0–1 (19.4 BDT·PMH0–1<

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT The marine salvage and commercial diving industries have increasingly been sought out to prevent oil spills from submerged shipwrecks, and to detect and recover spilled oil below the surface once a subsea spill occurs. In recent years, underwater oil recovery techniques have advanced from predominantly surface-supplied diver installed vacuum or pumping systems in relatively shallow waters to the use of saturation diving systems and remotely operated vehicles at greater depths. Underwater oil detection technologies have advanced permitting the detection of spilled oil in the water colu

Abstract (sommario):
The growth and quality of natural seedlings are important goals of forest management in uneven-aged high stands. In this study, the recovery process of the physical and chemical properties of soil, as well as growth variables of beech seedlings on the skid trails after skidding operations in three time periods (10, 20, and 30 years) were investigated in the Hyrcanian forests of Iran. Results revealed that the soil chemical properties (organic C, total N, and pH) were fully recovered after 20 years, while soil physical properties (bulk density, porosity, and penetration resistance) were not yet

Abstract (sommario):
Recovery of common agricultural weeds after burial by soil was studied in four greenhouse and three field experiments. Species studied included velvetleaf, Powell amaranth, common lambsquarters, barnyardgrass, and giant foxtail. Seedlings were bent over before burial to simulate the effect of the impact of soil thrown by a cultivator. Altogether, more than 35,000 seedlings were marked and observed for recovery. No seedlings recovered from 4 cm of burial. Recovery from complete burial under 2 cm of soil ranged from 0 to 24% depending on the experiment, species, and watering treatment, but recov
