Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The monograph consists of three chapters, the first of which outlines the theoretical foundations of intelligent information systems. Special attention is paid to the disclosure of the term "model" as the intended meaning depends on the understanding of the material. Introduces and examines the new concepts such as the associative and intuitive knowledge while in the creation of intellectual information systems are not used. The second Chapter contains the analysis of problems of development of artificial intelligence (AI), developed in two directions: classical and statistical. Discusses difficulties in the development of the classical approach, associated with identifying the meaning of words, phrases, text, and formulating thoughts. The analysis of problems arising in the play of imagination and insight, machine understanding of natural language texts, play, verbalization and reflection. The third Chapter contains examples of the development of intelligent information systems and technologies in practice of management of economic objects. Theoretical bases of construction of information robots designed to support the task hierarchy of the knowledge base and generating control regulations. The technology of their creation and application in the management of the business efficiency of enterprise business processes and its investment activities. Focused on researchers and developers, AI and intelligent information systems, as well as graduate students and faculty in related academic disciplines.

Abstract (sommario):
The recent emergence of ‘Iberian Studies’ requires a crucial reflection on the challenges and potentialities associated with this area. This volume intends to contribute to methodological renewal and compiles essays that explore possibilities of analysis over the Iberian space and related phenomena. It offers a plural framework of theoretical references and perspectives, in which the challenges posed by Basque, Catalan and Galician cases are especially focused. Thereby, this book is a valuable tool for reading the current situation and for developing a new critical thinking about this object of study.

Abstract (sommario):
Massimo Quaini (1941-2017) was one of the most eminent figures in geography. A group of scholars dedicate this book to him in order to keep unwinding, in the world’s labyrinth, the thread of his reflections, that placed geography among territorial sciences making them object of civil commitment. His critical, transdisciplinary thinking did never recognize boundaries but only fruitful differences of perspective: his highest legacy, perhaps, lays in this impulse to integrate different skills (of historians, poets, archaeologists, ecologists, planners…) to return the world’s places their value. This is therefore not a typical ‘in memoriam’ book on Quaini’s topics but, as we dare say, a book with Quaini.

Abstract (sommario):
This volume springs from that fruitful project of scientific cooperation between the humanities departments of Università di Firenze and University of Arizona which was the Forum for the Study of the Literary Cultures of the Southwest (2000-2007). Tri-cultural, at least (Native, Hispanic and Anglo-American), and multi-lingual, today’s Southwest presents a complex coexistence of different cultures, the equal of which would be hard to find elsewhere in the United States. Of this virtually inexhaustible object of study, the essays here collected tackle an ample range of themes. While the majority of them are concerned with the literatures of the Southwest, still a good third falls into the fields of history, art history, ethnography, sociology or cultural studies. They are partitioned in four sections, the first three reflecting the chronology of the stratification of the three major cultures and the fourth highlighting one of the most sensitive topics in and about contemporary Southwest – the borderlands/la frontera.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Scrivere di Islam. Raccontare la diaspora (Writing About Islam. Narrating a Diaspora) is a meditation on our multireligious, multicultural, and multilingual reality. It is the result of a personal and collaborative exploration of the necessity to rethink national culture and identity in a more diverse, inclusive, and anti-racist way. The central part of this volume – both symbolically and physically – includes Shirin Ramzanali Fazel’s reflections on the discrimination of Muslims, and especially Muslim women, in Italy and the UK. Looking at school textbooks, newspapers, TV programs, and sharing her own personal experience, this section invites us to change the way Muslim immigrants are narrated in scholarly research and news reports. Most importantly, this section urges us to consider minorities not just as ‘topics’ of cultural analysis, but as audiences and cultural agents. Following Shirin’s invitation to question prevailing modes of representations of immigrants, the volume continues with a dialogue between the co-authors and discusses how collaboration can be a way to avoid reproducing a ‘colonial model’ of knowledge production, in which the white male scholar takes as object of analysis the work of an African female writer. The last chapter also asserts that immigration literature cannot be approached with the same expectations and questions readers would have when reading ‘canonised’ texts. A new critical terminology is needed in order to understand the innovative linguistic choices and narrative forms that immigrant writers have invented in order to describe a reality that has lacked representation or which has frequently been misrepresented, especially in the discourse around the contemporary Muslim diaspora.

Verloo, Nanke, e Luca Bertolini, a cura di. Seeing the City. NL Amsterdam: Amsterdam University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5117/9789463728942.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The city is a complex object. Some researchers look at its shape, others at its people, animals, ecology, policy, infrastructures, buildings, history, art, or technical networks. Some researchers analyse processes of in- or exclusion, gentrification, or social mobility; others biological evolution, traffic flows, or spatial development. Many combine these topics or add still more topics beyond this list. Some projects cross the boundaries of research and practice and engage in action research, while others pursue knowledge for the sake of curiosity. This volume embraces this variety of perspectives and provides an essential collection of methodologies for studying the city from multiple, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary perspectives. We start by recognizing that the complexity of the urban environment cannot be understood from a single vantage point. We therefore offer multiple methodologies in order to gather and analyse data about the city, and provide ways to connect and integrate these approaches. The contributors form a talented network of urban scholars and practitioners at the forefront of their fields. They offer hands-on methodological techniques and skills for data collection and analysis. Furthermore, they reveal honest and insightful reflections from behind the scenes. All methodologies are illustrated with examples drawn from the authors own research applying them in the city of Amsterdam. In this way, the volume also offers a rich collection of Amsterdam-based research and outcomes that may inform local urban practitioners and policy makers. Altogether, the volume offers indispensable tools for and aims to educate a new generation of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary-minded urban scholars and practitioners.

Reflecting my personal practice as an improvising cellist and my academic interest in digital music, I offer a particular account of some of the roles shape plays in framing and supporting these processes in both acoustic and digital music-making. Abstract (sommario):
For me every sound has its own shape or form. This sense of shape is like objects in my periphery. They move around me and change in size and structure depending on how the sounds change. The experience is more intense with more complex sounds and when the source of the sound is not visible. I wonder if it is my brain creating the visual for the sound. The shapes seem to reflect the sound: liquid sounds often create fluid bubbly shapes; sharp clanging sounds have more angular shapes like growing crystals; bass sounds are large and expanding. When there is a loud, seemingly singular sound, this can create a sense of space around me as if I were inside the shape itself. When many sounds occur at once, the shapes often combine, creating a complex structure or a texture. These shapes sometimes blend together, rather as sounds do in the environment, creating a moving landscape. These experiences are part of how I sense the world and rarely stand out as distractions. Sometimes, however, a sudden, unexpected sound will evoke a synaesthetic experience that is distracting, drawing my attention away from whatever I might be doing....

Abstract (sommario):
The grammar of subjectivity, in particular in the form of self-consciousness, belongs to this day to the most difficult objects of philosophy. This holds in the philosophy of German idealism as well as in analytic philosophy. This grammar supplies the basic structure of all fundamental epistemological conceptions and is itself the object of various ontological interpretations. Hegel’s analysis of essence as internal reflection, which is analyzed in detail in this chapter, is one of the most rigorous analyses of this grammar of subjectivity. His conception has two main strengths: first, the approach operates at such a fundamental level that the distinction between the epistemological and the ontological dimension is itself conceived as an element of this grammar. Second, Hegel succeeds in unfolding the complexity of this grammar out of a single principle by means of a self-referential movement of the concept.

French, Craig. Object Seeing and Spatial Perception. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780199666416.003.0006.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This chapter considers the Spatiality Claim: if one sees an object then one sees some of that object’s spatial properties. The author considers an argument for this given by Cassam (2007), and challenges Cassam’s argument. His argument involves the idea, inspired by Dretske (1969), that seeing an object requires visual differentiation. But, it is argued here, there are prima facie counter-examples to the visual differentiation condition. Next, the author discusses the Spatiality Claim directly, and defends it against potential counter-examples which come from reflection on empirical cases where subjects can see objects yet have some sort of spatial perception deficit. One theme that emerges is that insofar as versions of the Spatiality Claim are defensible, we should focus on the relatively determinable spatial properties of objects and our perception of such properties.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The object colors that we see are constructed by the visual brain and may therefore be significantly influenced by other visual attributes we perceive the object to possess. This chapter describes an illusion that illustrates one such interdependence between perceived object shape and color. The Chromatic Mach Card is a folded concave card, one side painted white and the other magenta. When the card is perceived in inverted depth, or convex, the pinkish reflections cast by the magenta side onto the white side appear deeper in saturation and painted thereon. Like the nineteenth-century Mach Card that inspired it, the chromatic Mach Card demonstrates that the apparent surface reflectance properties of objects—and, hence, their colors—are inextricably linked to the perception of 3D shape and scene configuration via the visual brain’s inbuilt knowledge of the physics of mutual reflection.

Petersson, Sonya, Christer Johansson, Magdalena Holdar e Sara Callahan, a cura di. The Power of the In-Between: Intermediality as a Tool for Aesthetic Analysis and Critical Reflection. Stockholm University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.16993/baq.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Power of the In-Between: Intermediality as a Tool for Aesthetic Analysis and Critical Reflection gathers fourteen individual case studies where intermedial issues—issues concerning that which takes place in between media—are explored in relation to a range of different cultural objects and contexts, different methodological approaches, and different disciplinary perspectives. The cases investigate the intermediality of such manifold objects and phenomena as contemporary installation art, twentieth-century geography books, renaissance sculpture, media theory, and public architecture of the 1970s. They also bring together scholars from the disciplines of art history, comparative literature, theatre studies, musicology, and the history of ideas.Starting out from an inclusive understanding of intermediality as “relations between media conventionally perceived as different,” each author specifies and investigates “intermediality” in their own particular case; that is, each examines how it is inflected by particular objects, methods, and research questions. “Intermediality” thus serves both as a concept employed to cover an inclusive range of cultural objects, cultural contexts, methodological approaches, and so on, and as a concept to be modelled out by the particular cases it is brought to bear on. Rather than merely applying a predefined concept, the objectives are experimental. The authors explore the concept of intermediality as a malleable tool of research. This volume further makes a point of transgressing the divide between media history and semiotically and/or aesthetically oriented intermedial studies. The former concerns the specificity of media technologies and media interrelations in socially, politically, and epistemologically defined space and time, and the latter targets formal considerations of media objects and its various meaning-making elements. These two conventionally separated fields of research are integrated in order to produce a richer understanding of the analytical and historical, as well as the aesthetic and technological, conditions and possibilities of intermedial phenomena.

Abstract (sommario):
According to Berkeley, we may genuinely refer only to things that resemble the objects of our immediate awareness. Immediate awareness is, however, of two types: perception and reflection. By perception we are aware of our ideas, and by reflection we are aware of ourselves and our actions. Although a spirit (self) or an action is neither an idea nor like an idea, our reflective awareness of ourselves and our actions allows words like ‘spirit’ and ‘action’ to be employed as genuine referring expressions. That Berkeley’s philosophy of language permits genuine reference to spirits is important because of the central role played by spirits—and particularly God—in Berkeley’s metaphysics.

Abstract (sommario):
The essay film is characterized not by its choice of objects, but by their “arrangement,” which is determined by a structure of gap. This structure is shaped by a framing and reframing activity, which is central to the practice of the essay film as critique of ideology. What is distinctive of the essay film is its stubborn labor of testing its perspective, its positioning, and its distance from the world; the visible result of this labor is that the essay film detaches objects from their background, introducing a gap of potentiality between object and world. The film essayist is always at once a critic and a metahistorian, whose engagement with a historical object is also always a reflection on the gap—be it cognitive, temporal, cultural, or experiential—that distances him or her from that object and on how film may negotiate such a gap. This negotiation is its philosophy.

Abstract (sommario):
The chapter considers the concept of ‘existence’ as it is variously applied in Locke to the objects of sensation (the ‘real existence’ of things) and to the objects of reflection (the ‘fleeting existence’ of ideas). It shows that Locke, in order to construct his own ontology and typology of simple ideas and modes, is both using and subverting the Cartesian ontology of substance and modes. Ideas, as ‘immediate objects of perception’, exist in the mind, but not substantially. This in turn sheds light on the differences between Locke’s and Descartes’s doctrines of ideas, especially on the question of ‘objective reality’, which played a strategic part in the Third Meditation, as well as in the debate between Arnauld and Malebranche.

Abstract (sommario):
This article focuses on the concepts of magical things followed by fetishes, commodities, and then the modern world of computers. When do things become magical is a vital question which this article tries to answer. This article discusses the magical elements associated with various objects that we come across in our daily lives. It also focuses on the problematic aspect associated with magic and fetish. The understanding reached by the impossibility of the fetish can be extended to our own everyday lives by zooming in on the magic of the commodity — to show that a certain fear of the object that behaves as a subject is both affirmed as well as denied in consumer society. The last part of this article shows through a reflection on the early popularization of the computer how the modern problematic of magical things plays out even in contexts where people embrace rather than fear the autonomously acting object.

Visual phenomena such as shadows and reflections are lexicalized in idiosyncratic ways. In particular, we appear to master notions of certain types of shadows, at least notions that \are learnable and communicable, for which we do not have names. We also have many imprecise lexicalizations; so much so that in certain conditions notions that appear to be antonyms, such as that of shadows and of light, for example, even get applied to the same visual phenomena. Reflections offer another field of study. I shall investigate whether constraints on lexicalization depend on particular cognitive advantages conferred upon objects or object-like entities.

Rejecting the proposal that the aim of phenomenology is to provide refined descriptions of inner experiences, the chapter first discusses Husserl’s distinction between phenomenology and psychology. It next considers his employment of reflection, contrasts his position with that of Bergson, and outlines how Husserl operates with different concepts of reflection, and how a central task of phenomenological analysis is to account for the constitution of the object of consciousness. Phenomenological reflection does not only target experiential structures. It also investigates the object of experience, and the correlational a priori that holds between the experienced object and the different modes of givenness.

Abstract (sommario):
Chapter 5 addresses how, whether as a general concept or as a feature of psychiatry, ‘change’ remains difficult to define because its meaning is parasitical upon metaphysical categories such as object, event, property, and time. It might be more practical to explore it in relation to specific ontological regions (e.g., physics, biology, and sociology). The biological and social sciences (both relevant to psychiatry) countenance change. The targets of change in psychiatry remain its epistemological structure and its objects. Change can be explored transepistemically by comparing historical narratives of madness or intraepistemically, by detecting variations within a given narrative (e.g., religious, social, or neurobiological). These studies can be value-neutral or value-laden (the latter can be redefined ‘change’ as ‘progress’). ‘Change’ can be accounted for by the Cambridge model of symptom formation. According to this, mental symptoms are events resulting from configuratory action undertaken by sufferers to make sense of (often) distressing information invading their awareness. This information can be biological signals (released by a distressed brain networks) or symbols (resulting from social interaction or personal reflection). Configurators (personal, sociocultural, dialogical, etc.) shape this inchoate information into effable experiences. Due to biological mutation or social change affecting the configurators, mental symptoms are liable to change in time. Hence, the objects of psychiatry are not eternal and will be replaced in the future.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
There is no definition of religion that is universally valid and generally accepted in religious studies. Increasing numbers of scholars of religion see the attempt to define religion as doomed to failure, and therefore do not even try. A concept of religion is, however, indispensable for staking out the subject area which the sociology of religion and religious studies are concerned with. Defining clearly what is meant by religion is necessary not only to determine the content of the object to be examined and to distinguish it from other objects, but also to detect changes in the field of study. After discussing different approaches that are taken to define religion, the chapter proposes a working definition that combines substantive and functional arguments. The different forms of religious meaning available to mediate between immanence and transcendence can be classified as religious identification, religious practices, and religious belief and experience.

Abstract (sommario):
The Metaphysics of Notation (2008) is a 72-foot-wide, hand-drawn pictographic score divided into twelve continuous panels.1 It is accompanied by no instruction regarding its interpretation. The work aspires to elicit a musical response from a performer, but despite its profusion of concrete, detailed glyphs it advocates nothing specific about the nature of their aural realization. Furthermore, I heard no sound in my head while composing the piece. This is a radical departure from the approach to composition I was taught, in which the composer’s job is to imagine—preferably with exacting resolution—a sound object, and then, through the deft application of the most relevant notation (whether traditional or invented—but if the latter, surely a defined one) to produce a specification from which a performer (burdened or invigorated by a marginal or essential role as interpreter) can realize this imagined sound....

Abstract (sommario):
The Epilogue considers the semantic and poetological connections between words and weaving, and offers a broader perspective that brings in Tennyson, Waterhouse, and William Morris. Through Aristophanes and Plato it reflects on the cultural, social, and generic expectations of weaving and gender. Female voice is considered, in response to Samuel Butler but also in light of recent scholarship, translation, and literature that has changed the gender balance of Homeric studies. The Epilogue situates this book at a turning point, and reiterates its place in the discourse. Again through Morris, it returns to the all-important issue of representation, offering a final reflection on the particular status of objects in poetry.

Abstract (sommario):
The conceptualization of the notions of sustainable habitat, integrative design and complexity raises the need to address the questions, how to contribute to the habitat sustainable from transdisciplinary processes? What is the responsibility of design in the current context? Moreover, how to face the complexity of thinking and responding to the urban, architectural and technological phenomena? These approximations are built from three perspectives: cultural and comprehensive management of the territory; technology, environment and sustainability; and integrative design, habitat and project. For this, it begins with a reflection on the meaning of design in relation to way, and how this is understood as a meta-discipline that integrates the voice of experts with that of people who live, enjoy or suffer from design objects. Subsequently, the relation between the notions of integrative design, habitat and complexity, in light of transdisciplinarityFrom this framework, it deepens the link among governance, resilience and urban reconversion, in times of neoliberal and hypercompetitive globalization, based on ecological ethics, civic participation and co- responsibility. On another scale, the connection among technology, environment and sustainability, from a vision of the future based on the use of energy; resource consumption; waste recycling, among others. As closure, addresses the matter of project research from an epistemological reflection that compromises the relationship between processes, maps and territories, to establish strategic notes for research-creation. As a conclusion, the commitment to reflection and the exercise of a responsible and integrative design.
