Abstract (sommario):
In the search for computational models that help to understand the dynamics of Complex Systems, one can take a great advantage from the impressive acceleration of computer tools and techniques. In fact the very structure of computation on digital computers has inspired the introduction of new class of models (algorithms), where interaction among degrees of freedom are expressed by logical rules acting over a discrete state space – something much closer to "biological language" than to standard (floating point) physical models. Starting from the definitions of spin systems, with little changes we reach a definition a new model that is well suited to describe different simulation systems. Such class of models is can be considered a subclass of the Agent-Based systems in vogue nowadays. Moreover, we shortly describe two microscopic simulators of this type, which are being used to study microscopic phenomena in two completely different fields of application, namely immunology and finance. As a final remark, given the lattice representation of space, such computational-modeling paradigm is well suited for efficient and "relatively simple" parallelization. Indeed, both models have been implemented to run on parallel computers adopting the Message Passing paradigm for Distributed Memory machines.

Abstract (sommario):
In order to help surgeons improve tool insertion accuracy in pelvic-acetabular surgery, it is very important to take advantage of the emerging navigation, guidance and robotics technologies. The computer integrated surgical system is promising for pelvic-acetabular surgery. In most of the procedures of pelvic-acetabular surgery, such as drilling or milling operations, there are many delicate operations involving inserting the tools accurately and precisely in a confined workspace. This article mainly investigates the most important two subsystems: navigation and robotic system, which perform sensing and actuating tasks, respectively. For navigation subsystem, a remark is made between the state-of-art optical tracking systems (OTS). A hybrid tracking method is proposed to integrate optical tracking and inertial sensing techniques, and some preliminary results are given through the proof-of-concepts experiments. For robotics subsystem, we survey the existing studies on the orthopedic compliant robot arms, together with our proposals for the pelvic surgery. We investigate some of the industrial robotics arms with good repeatability and dexterity while positioning the surgical tools.

Abstract (sommario):
Cooperative manipulation in dual-arm robotic systems is a fundamental capability to perform many problems such as human-like tasks. In this article, we present an approach to solve dual-arm cooperative manipulation tasks using the differential evolution algorithm. In this work, manipulator kinematics are represented using the Denavit–Hartenberg model. The proposed method is able to avoid singularities because it does not require the inversion of any Jacobian matrix. In addition, the proposed approach handles joint limit constraints based on penalty functions. As a final remark, this approach is suitable for robotic systems of redundant or non-redundant serial manipulators composed of revolute or prismatic joints. Simulation experiments illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach under different dual-arm configurations. Furthermore, real experiments were performed using a dual-arm KUKA Youbot system to show the applicability of the proposed approach.

Rehmet, Geoffrey Michael. "Remora : implementing adaptive parallelism on a heterogeneous cluster of networked workstations". Thesis, Rhodes University, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1006696.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Computers connected to a local area network are often only fully utilized for short periods of time. In fact, most workstations are not used at all for a significant portion of the day. The combined "idle time" of the workstations on a network constitutes a significant computing resource, which is generally wasted. If harnessed properly, such a resource could constitute a cheap alternative to expensive high-performance computers. Adaptive parallelism refers to the parallel execution of a computation on a dynamically changing set of processors. This thesis investigates the viability of this approach as a vehicle to harness the "idle cycles" available on a heterogeneous cluster of networked computers. A system, called Remora, which implements adaptive parallelism via the Linda programming paradigm, is presented. Experiments, performed using Remora, show that adaptive parallelism provides an efficient vehicle for using idle processor cycles, without having an adverse effect on the tasks which constitute the normal workload of the computers being used.

Paterson, Alastair Mark. "An investigation of a remote visual navigation system for a building inspection robot". Thesis, City, University of London, 1996. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/19740/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The work presented here shows the development of a machine vision algorithm for finding the position of a building inspection robot on the outside of a large building. The reasons for external building inspection are introduced along with the types of tests used. Existing methods are examined giving their limitations in terms of practicality and safety and an alternative using remote access is proposed. The work concentrates on the navigational aspects and shows how one possible solution using machine vision could be implemented and this is compared to similar work carried out elsewhere. The major part of the thesis covers the development of the robot location algorithm starting with the fundamentals of image processing and finishing with the actual robot's position. Different methods of edge detection are investigated and a pixel linking routine is used to group together data in an image that form features and principal lines. The algorithm investigates the use of the lines for detecting vanishing points and tries to identify the features highlighted in the image. The most significant part of the work concentrates on the development of a method of identifying specific features such as a target on the robot and different windows along with a way of matching the features to a computer model of the building thus enabling the position of the robot to be calculated. Results are given showing how the algorithm performed on a model building and robot in the laboratory with various tests using different camera positions, image enhancement and spurious features. The results presented show that the algorithm was capable of finding the position ofa model robot to sufficient accuracy (typically 3% of the size of the robot target) and that the errors measured were predictable. Additional results show how the algorithm performed on a real building and indicate the problems associated with real images with the conclusion that the algorithm will work under a certain range of conditions providing that certain elements of it can be improved.

Abstract (sommario):
The Remote Consultation and Diagnosis (RCD) in Global Picture Archiving and Communication System (Global PACS) is a unique suite of multimedia telemedicine applications developed at the University of Arizona. The applications support real-time patients' data, image files, audio and video consultation and diagnosis annotation exchanges. The RCD enables joint collaboration between pathologists, radiologists, or physicians while they are at distant geographical locations. This project provides four RCD scenarios, i.e., Case Review, Case Acquire, Store and Forward Analysis, as well as Interactive Diagnosis and Consultation. The RCD Global PACS environment consists of heterogeneous, autonomous, and legacy resources. The Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA), Java Database Connectivity (JDBC), and Java language provide the capability to combine the RCD Global PACS resources into an integrated, interoperable, and scalable system. The underneath technology, including IDL, ORB, Event Service, IIOP, JDBC/ODBC, legacy system wrapping and Java implementation are explored. This distributed collaborative CORBA/JDBC based framework will challenge the advanced, medical information management requirements. It also makes the RCD Global PACS both hardware and software technologically independent. As our research and development extend, we will continue to incorporate the latest advances in computer technology. RCD Global PACS is not another new tool in telemedicine, but rather a new paradigm for the delivery of health services that requires process reengineering, cultural changes, as well as organizational changes. It is a whole new way of practicing in telemedicine. We ensure that the RCD Global PACS project has long-term, comprehensive solutions for today and tomorrow's healthcare needs.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThis chapter presents a high-level overview of how designers of complex systems can address risks to project success associated with operator performance and user-centered design. Operation Centers for remote, autonomous systems rely on an interconnected process involving complex technological systems and human operators. Designers should account for issues at possible points of failure, including the human operators themselves. Compared to other system components, human operators can be error-prone and require different knowledge to design for than engineering components. Operators also typically exhibit a wider range of performance than other system components. We propose the Risk-Driven Incremental Commitment Model as the best guide to decision-making when designing interfaces for high-stakes systems. Designers working with relevant stakeholders must assess where to allocate scarce resources during system development. By knowing the technology, users, and tasks for the proposed system, the designers can make informed decisions to reduce the risk of system failure. This chapter introduces key concepts for informed decision-making when designing operation center systems, presents an example system to ground the material, and provides several broadly applicable design guidelines that support the development of user-centered systems in operation centers.

Abstract (sommario):
Haptics is one of the most important sensations for dentists to prepare cavity in dental surgery, which is however not easy to simulate in a computer system because of the large drilling force and the small speed of movement and material removal. In this paper, we present a fully voxel-based approach to interactively simulate dental drilling. Different from those voxel/mesh hybrid models, the drilling forces are computed directly from the voxel-representation while considering the factors of teeth’s material properties, the posture and forward speed of dentist’s drill and the contact surface area. To overcome force discontinuity caused by removal of tooth material, we define two layers of voxels on drill, where the boundary voxels are only employed to compute force feedback and the interior voxels are adopted to remove materials from teeth. The experimental result shows that our force model can produce smooth and large force feedback at a slow movement on haptic devices. Other than haptic rendering, a real-time filtering method directly using voxel representation has also been developed to improve visual rendering in dental simulation.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper illustrates how software and hardware for telecommunications and data acquisition enable cost-effective monitoring of peaking gas turbines using personal computers. It describes the design and evaluation of a system which transmits data from each start-up and shutdown over 1,500 miles to a monitoring computer. It presents system structure, interfaces, data content, and management. The system captures transient sequences of acceleration, synchronization, loading, thermal stabilization, steady operation, shutdown and cooldown; it yields coherent sets of speed, load, temperature, journal eccentricity, vibration amplitude, and phase at intervals appropriately spaced in time and speed. The data may be used to characterize and identify operational problems.

Abstract (sommario):
The data center of tomorrow is characterized as one containing a dense aggregation of commodity computing, networking and storage hardware mounted in industry standard racks. In fact, the data center is a computer. The walls of the data center are akin to the walls of the chassis in today’s computer system. The new slim rack mounted systems and blade servers enable reduction in the footprint of today’s data center by 66%. While maximizing computing per unit area, this compaction leads to extremely high power density and high cost associated with removal of the dissipated heat. Today’s approach of cooling the entire data center to a constant temperature sampled at a single location, irrespective of the distributed utilization, is too energy inefficient. We propose a smart cooling system that provides localized cooling when and where needed and works in conjunction with a compute workload allocator to distribute compute workloads in the most energy efficient state. This paper shows a vision and construction of this intelligent data center that uses a combination of modeling, metrology and control to provision the air conditioning resources and workload distribution. A variable cooling system comprising variable capacity computer room air conditioning units, variable air moving devices, adjustable vents, etc. are used to dynamically allocate air conditioning resources where and when needed. A distributed metrology layer is used to sense environment variables like temperature and pressure, and power. The data center energy manager redistributes the compute workloads based on the most energy efficient availability of cooling resources and vice versa. The distributed control layer is no longer associated with any single localized temperature measurement but based on parameters calculated from an aggregation of sensors. The compute resources not in use are put on “standby” thereby providing added savings.

Abstract (sommario):
Medical image data obtained from Computed Tomography (CT) are used as input to reconstruct and visualize 3-D structures of human bones for the purpose of developing a virtual reality (VR) based bone surgery system. These data are used for geometric modeling, force modeling, and model update to perform simulation of material removal with graphic and haptic rendering. One important issue in bone surgery simulation is to handle the large, complex, and often poor-quality data. Although the processing power of personal computer has increased greatly over the years, improper data handling can still cause implementation problems such as excessive memory consumption, low data processing speed, and incapability of real-time simulation. This paper presents a method for managing large CT scan data based on the consideration of implementation complexity, memory storage and computational overhead. Besides medical data acquisition and image processing, two important computer graphics concepts, i.e. bounding volume and adaptive subdivision, are applied to remove irrelevant data and to organize the rest data. Two data structures, a complex linked list and a Quadtree list, are developed to store and organize the image data. These data are processed before VR simulation so as to reduce the data update time. With the proposed method, the memory bandwidth requirement is reduced drastically and real-time simulation performance is achieved.

Air quality is related to the contaminant distributions and contaminant removal effectiveness in indoor environment. This paper presents an evaluation of thermal comfort and contaminant removal for an office setting with underfloor air distribution system by the use of computational fluid dynamics modeling. A typical single cubicle in a large office floor in steady state condition of airflow as well as heat and mass transfer is investigated for both cooling and heating scenarios. The model includes a typical cubicle in a large office floor with a chair, a desk with a personal computer on its top, and heat sources such as seated people, computer monitor and CPU, and lights. Air enters the occupied zone through an inlet located at the floor level supplying a vertical upward inflow. Five different locations of the inlet diffuser, three different inlet air speeds, and four different loads of heat loss through the floor slab in heating case scenario were considered. Distributions of velocity, temperature, relative humidity, and contaminant concentration in such cases were computed. The results were compared among various simulation cases and showed reasonable agreement with experimental data taken from related literature.

Abstract (sommario):
The ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) is an international collaborative project, and its object is aiming at demonstrating the scientific and technological feasibility of fusion energy for peaceful purposes. In the ITER, the four important engineering challenges are the first wall of the blank model, the remote handling (RH), the heating of the plasma, and the superconducting technology. The RH control system is very complexity, and the total number of the control nodes is 15378, which consists of the control nodes in the Tokamak equipment, the hot cell equipment and the control room equipment. Only the number of the control nodes of the transfer cask system (TCS) is up to 2580. The TCS is one sub system of ITER RH system, which provides the means for the remote transfer of (clean/activated/contaminated) in-vessel components and remote handling equipment between hot cell facility and vacuum vessel through dedicated galleries and lift in the ITER buildings. Due to the experimental facility with a very long timeline, the control software on the ITER is better suited using an open source solution as compared to a commercial solution. According to market share and proven record, command control and data acquisition and communication (CODAC) group chooses the EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System) as the preferred solution. China takes part in the ITER, and wishes to grasp the RH technology, which is one of the four key technologies related to the future fusion reactors for electric power generation. According to the CODAC system configuration with EPICS component, the concept control architecture of the TCS is presented in this paper. The control system consists of the file network, the interlock network, the safety network, real-time network, RH control network and visual supervising network etc. Then, the paper analyses each part corresponding requirement function. As a result, a development service platform concept is set up. Finally, the experiment system of the leg of the TCS has been constructed.

Abstract (sommario):
Leaks in fuel storage tanks and distribution piping systems have been identified as a mission-critical problem by the Department of Defense and the U.S. Army. Fuel system leaks are often hard to locate and virtually inaccessible for efficient repair because the piping is often installed under a concrete pad or tarmac. Leak repair could cost up to $2,000, and the cost of cleanup and re-mediation for fuel spills can exceed $50,000. In this project an acoustic remote sensing system was installed to monitor an Army heliport refueling system to determine whether it could detect and accurately locate fuel leaks using computer software technolo-gies to distinguish acoustic leakage signatures from normal fuel system operational noise. Demonstration and validation efforts were disadvantaged by the fact that no fuel leaks occurred in the monitored system for the duration of the project. However, the monitoring system did identify several unusual acoustic events within the fueling system and interpret them as indications of intermittent malfunctions of a check valve and a fuel pump. The 30-year ROI is about 6.42. Further work is required before the technology can be fully implemented: its ability to detect fluid leaks must be proven, and the system specifications must be certified through an EPA third party.
