Walsh, Sean Noah. "Ritual, Myth, and Symbol in the Field of Nuclear Posturing". Master's thesis, University of Central Florida, 2005. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/4348.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Since their inception, the actual use of nuclear weapons in conflict is extremely limited. There have been only two documented occurrences which were committed exclusively by the United States. By contrast, however, state posturing with nuclear weapons occurs with regularity transcending historical situations, national wealth, military power, or even the actual possession of nuclear weapons. Rationalist arguments that depict nuclear posturing as a means of deterrence appear insufficient given its tendency to unbalance perceptions of equilibrium, and the public nature in which it occurs. Instead, I examine nuclear posturing by the United States during the Cold War as a form of political ritual providing for three distinctive, but complementary functions. First, posturing was a means to create coherence between foreign nuclear policy and domestic civil defense by manipulating symbols of fear. Second, posturing allowed the state to present itself in its new role as a shamanic authority over a new and powerful realm. Finally, posturing allowed for a normalization of the contradictory roles assumed by the state as it upheld its commission to defend the citizenry by means that would most probably destroy them all.

Abstract (sommario):

Robinson, Peter J. A. "Baptism in ritual perspective : myth, symbol and metaphor as anthropological foundations for a baptismal theology". Thesis, Durham University, 1997. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/5060/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis argues that Christian baptism is most profitably understood from the perspective of anthropological studies of ritual, A dialogue with its categories establishes that baptismal theology has often implicitly assumed social anthropology's findings on ritual in general. It also suggests that the primary ritual categories of myth, symbol and metaphor are foundational to baptism's theological development. The anthropology of myth is deployed to locate the narrative basis for baptism. The proposal is made that the story of Jesus' Baptism, which is understood as the revelation of the eschatological new creation, provides baptismal ritual with its imitative source and legitimates its symbols and metaphors. An analysis of iconography is an important part of this justification. This proposal is developed by exploring the properties of baptismal symbols. The concepts of symbolic elusiveness, deep structure and natural symbolism are exploited to give an account of symbols based on water and oil. The sensual experience of olfaction and the flow of human blood are found to be important interpretative concepts which lead naturally to a consideration of the corporeality of baptismal symbolism. Recognising that symbols promote a shared ritual experience, the properties of ritual metaphors are then considered as the primary means for facilitating a baptismal identity. Criteria for an evaluation of the three major metaphors - birth, death and washing - are derived from anthropology and applied. It is concluded that the metaphor of childbirth has a strong claim to be regarded as the appropriate primary metaphor for organising baptism's ritual context. Baptism thus understood offers fresh contours for baptismal theology today and overcomes some of the difficulties presented by more traditional methodologies. Especially, it allows contemporary concerns about baptism to be effectively addressed. Among these are questions about the intelligibility of its liturgical symbols and the relationships between its key metaphors.

Klein, Marie Bastienne. "Dancing with the hangman : symbol, myth and ritual in the medieval German legend, the Schelmensage". Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8050.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Dancing with the hangman is an investigation into the medieval German legend known as the Schelmensage, which has its location in Bergen-Enkheim in Frankfurt, Germany - the town where I was born. It is a legend that concerns the manner in which a hangman became knighted by the emperor Barbarossa. I received the legend from my mother. My initial research question was to find out why the legend was being told for over a period of 900 years. The thesis investigation reveals the legend to be a German trickster myth, achieving this analysis using various theories to define it as myth. The work of Paul Ricoeur on mimesis, is cast in an arc of the prefigured world of action, the act of configuration and the ability of a person to reconfigure a situation or a life, which is applied so as to understand the structures which underlie the legend's meaning. Regarding the word Schelm as the symbolic core of this legend the thesis analyses this symbolism through its etymology, a structural analysis of its five different versions and its ritual performance in the play, Der Schelm von Bergen. The thesis considers the impact of being personally involved with the subject matter. The analysis is woven with personal episodes and this is defended as a reflexive methodolgy.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis investigates the Swedish Veteran’s day as celebrated in Stockholm in 2018. This is investigated in relation to a theoretical background of nationalism and through a lens of ritual theory. The study finds that the formal definition of the veteran that is presented during the Swedish Veteran’s day is not strictly defined. Instead, veteranship is defined by ideological traits such as peace and the nation, and experience-based traits such as risk of violence, suffering or competence. The study finds that different actors put emphasis on different traits. In the ceremony possible paradoxes of some of the traits are hidden in the ritual form. Veteranship occurs in the ceremony in a close relationship to the idea of the nation ofSweden. At times, the nation is depicted as an actor bearing the desirable traits of the veteran. The day in full is furthermore interpreted as a part of a social drama which balances therelationship between the veterans and the nation.

Theurgy, the action of the gods during the ritual acts, a practice incorporated, in late Antiquity, by the philosophical school of Iamblichus as a techné which conducts to, considered at that time, the ultimate experience of Philosophy become like the gods (homóiosis théo) , had influenced and determined the course of the entire Neoplatonism until the end of the ancient Academy. In the work De Mysteriis, which has long been considered irrational , Iamblichus, under the pseudonym of an Egyptian priest, structures the philosophical foundations of the theurgic art, covering topics such as: oracles, possessions, prophetic dreams, divine manifestations in general. The present dissertation aims at a reassessment and rereading of the work based on recent publications of the author s collected philosophical fragments, as well as academic studies derived from them. Through a careful disentangling of the threads of his narrative, an analysis of the first three Books of the work is made, erecting the philosophical foundations of divine manifestations and of the efficacy of the ritual. It exposes thus the argumentation regarding the theurgic art, demonstrating an innovative, complex and syncretic system, nicely elaborated in a high philosophical erudition of his time. It concludes the revised reading of the first three Books and their philosophical foundations of Theurgy, in order to justify the redemption of the depreciated status of the work, pointing also to a new appraisal and repositioning of Iamblichus as a key-element author, in the history of philosophy, to the whole tradition of philosophical foundations of mystical revelations in various later philosophical currents of neoplatonic heritage, until the end of the Renaissance

The following work researchs the making of the body of Grupo Sonhus Teatro Ritual, relating to its visions, tecniques and links with various traditions. Antropological and theatrical perspectives are put in dialogue in order to offer possibilities of approaching the group praxis. Csordas (2008) and Victor Turner (1982, 1987, 2005) are mobilized to think about the body: phenomenological views, but also emphasizing the comunicational field of the body through the ideia of symbol-body. A path that aims to understand connections between ritual and performance is followed, a central aspect to Grupo Sonhus understaings, and related to their Weltanschauung, analysed with a greater focus through their practices and discourses. The making of this work took place with the performatic learning of practices, but also with participant-observation and special dialogues. We reach the idea that the group aims to a body in transformation and that it hits people seeking their transformation as well.

A text has the ability to preserve the memory of their prior contexts. Without this function there would be no Story. If a text remained in the observer's consciousness only as itself, the past would be as a mosaic of disconnected fragments. Did mine, in the approach of the Conto de Amaro, the words of Yury Lotman. The objective of the present research in relation to Conto de Amaro, a 15thcentury narrative produced in the monastery of Alcobaça in Portugal, regarded as an enigma in the context of medieval literature is, before unveiling the origins, give a voice to the narrative. For that other texts were needed. The internal element of the tale of Amaro that allows better visibility of similar situations is the distinct temporalities living in the same narrative space. The application of the comparative method to this larger constellation with the 14 texts of research support, produced an extensive network of meanings embedded in some way to the Conto de Amaro that you can call its own memory. The identification of these meanings in the communicative mediation of culture mapped by Jesús Martín-Barbero - socialibility, institutionality, technicality, and rituality- allowed an interpretation of the tale of Amaro on several levels that are its own by adding understanding the text. At the same time, generated the perception of two distinct logics operating inside and outside the text, which called for understanding. One of them, different from that which is characteristic of descriptive and explanatory thought that, somehow, can be called the language of names. The functioning of names is so different on the set of natural languages, they can be considered a separate language. Their presence, however, is sensitive in the substrate of the cultures and the heterogeneity of human consciousness. The space they inhabit is mosaicado, their temporality is distinct and their nature is symbols. In the research, I indicate its presence and made a few comments. Among the authors who helped immensely in understanding the goal I quote Jerusa Pires Ferreira, Aron Gurevitch, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Yuri Lotman, Roman Jakobson, Boris Uspenski, Vyacheslav Ivanov and Santo Amaro

The object of this work is the body in the laboratories of the liturgy celebrates Network. The study was conducted through literature research and participant observation. It was investigated whether the methods used in laboratories litírgicos actually ensure the full participation of the person in the liturgy; if the individuals involved acquire a more integrated and full perception of self and other, and how they acquire understanding of the cosmos. It was found that Network takes over the body as an element of capital importance for the completion of the rite, so she has sought, through the liturgy laboratories, working for those involved in liturgical action can be positioned fully in comprising this sense the rediscovery of corporeality. This effort has contributed to a better understanding of the human being in its entirety, where the individual perceives himself interacting with his peers, with the cosmos and with the transcendent.
Abstract (sommario):
This study has three aims. The first one is to review which Buddhist symbols are used in Rituals commercial “The Ritual of Laughing Buddha”, where Rituals is a cosmetic company, with a main focus on skin care. The second aim with my study is to examine how semiotic resources are used to depict Buddhist symbols based on multimodal critical discourse analysis, and the third aim is to examine how the concept of banal religion in the theory of mediatization can contribute to the understanding of the representation of Buddhist symbols. This paper will use a multimodal critical discourse analysis to examine the commercial and then analyze the material in relation to the theory of mediatization as described by Hjarvard. The semiotic resources made the Buddhist symbols appear explicitly and since several Buddhist symbols were found in the material, the concept of banal religion could be used as a theoretical focus and contribute to an understandning of how Buddhist symbols are used in the commercial. The results show that the commercial is not intended to convey a religious message, but was mainly used to connote emotions such as happiness, warmth and extravagance. Representation of religion is thus found in the commercial, but the Buddhist symbols are used in a different way, and are in a new context than from institutionalized religion.

Briault, Camilla. "Symbols, spaces and materiality : a transmission-based approach to Aegean Bronze Age ritual". Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2005. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1444555/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis explores the transmission of ritual practices in the second millennium BC Aegean. In contrast to previous approaches, which often overlook gaps in the diachronic record, emphasising continuity in cult practice over very long timescales, it is argued here that through charting the spatial and temporal distributions of three broad material types (cult symbols, spaces and objects), it is possible to document the spread of cult practice over time and space, and, crucially, to monitor changes in ritual between periods and between regions. Quantitative analyses of eight Cretan cult symbols, and examinations of each type of Aegean cult space and their associated ritual objects are employed in order to determine the extent to which ritual systems remained stable or underwent transformation over a thousand-year period. These analyses also expose the mechanisms by which ritual practice was transmitted. By relating the periods of stability and flux in ritual practice to the wider social and political changes seen in the Aegean during the Bronze Age, the role of ritual in the formation, maintenance and dissolution of political systems in different regions of the Aegean becomes more apparent. The wider aim of this thesis is to develop a new theoretical and methodological framework for examining the spread of ritual practices in prehistoric contexts, and the Aegean data thus serve as a case study on which to test that framework. The reproduction and transformation of ritual systems through time is an under-theorised area of prehistoric archaeology, and the second millennium BC Aegean provides an unusually attractive testing ground for theories of ritual transmission, due both to the quantity and range of the material available, and to the fine chronological control we now have over a large part of it. Focussing on ritual as a performance-based, materialised social practice, the framework combines models of cultural transmission drawn from archaeology, anthropology and cognitive psychology, and should be applicable not only to the Bronze Age Aegean, but to ritual stability and change in other prehistoric contexts.

The research is dedicated to the study and applications of some ritual elements in the mass media, as an attempt to fulfill the emptiness of existence, occasioned by the arrival of consciousness in the primordial man. Justification for this topic is based on the perception that the primitive man, with his mythic thoughts, and the modern man, straight thoughts formulated, have the same collective ritual dimensional base. Ritual must be read as a group of actions defined by their symbolic importance to a specific society. The actions and symbols aren't freely chosen by individuals, they are imposed by an external source. For the primordial man, the source is the ceremonial priests. For the modern man, the source is the influence of mass media. Showing how media uses the archetypical and sacred aspect of the ritual, manipulating its core for their own needs and satisfaction: fascination, enchantment, infiltration and stereotyping. By the Cultural Semiotic prism, the thesis aspires to contribute to studies and cultural communication, aiming for the rescue of complexity in the means of communication. How primitive rituals formats still survive in modern media, albeit in a saturated way, is the question this study addresses. Adopted methodological procedure was a research of qualitative character, involving analysis and bibliographical survey. As the theorical board of references are the authors B. Cyrulink, D. The conclusion is that, even if banalized and distorted, the principles of symbolic reorganization of the ritual still exert considerable influence in the media and in the mindset of the modern man

Abstract (sommario):
This project examines the conception and imaging of the city in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The thesis aims to chart the ways in which a spatialised reading of the metropolis most fully realised in ceremonial representations of the city informs representational strategies of the time. Chapter 1 looks at the transformations taking place during this period in the practice of land surveying, exploring the implications of the new techniques of geometrical survey for conceptions of civic space. Examining the parallels between the viewing of the estate and the reformation of the Rogationtide ceremonies of perambulating the bounds, the urban context for spatial description is analysed through a reading of John Stow's Survey of London. In Chapter 2 the resistance of the city to a strictly geometrical conception of space is traced through an analysis of early printed maps of the city and the texts of civic ceremonies. The shared interest of these cultural practices in the representation of civic space is interrogated to reveal an understanding of the city as comprising !oth built environment and social body which informs the deployment of the city as a subject of cartographic representation. The next chapter analyses the costume book in the context of a Europewide project of geographical description. The production of a clothed body capable of articulating spatial and hierarchical difference is examined in relation to the available ceremonial models for the negotiation of these intersecting axes of description and the tensions generated by this representational strategy The final chapter undertakes a reinvestigation of the Earl of Essex's rebellion, reading a wide range of materials to argue for the centrality of anxieties over the control of the civic sign to the understanding of this event.

Abstract (sommario):
AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF Gabor Hardy, for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in Speech Communication, presented on 8 March, 2012, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale TITLE: A RITUAL IN PERSPECTIVE: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF A LAKOTA SUNDANCE AT HOOSIER NATIONAL FOREST MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Jonathan Gray Using ethnographic methods, interviews, observations, and participation of and in indigenous rituals, I discuss the ways in which Western and American Indian notions of spirit, human beings and their place in the world, and the practice of spirituality differ in action, thought, and word. Since the time of the Renaissance the supremacy of "rational" or "reasonable" modes of thinking has influenced the modern world. Many American Indian writers, shamans, and Sundance chiefs believe that an understanding of their approach to the Divine may never be apprehended without some sort of actual experience. This indigenous perspective differs in substantial ways from hegemonic, Christian and Western linear modes of thinking. I draw on my attendance at numerous Sundance rituals, readings by American Indian spiritual leaders, and ethnographic work done at the Salt Creek Sundance ritual to articulate and streamline major differences and similarities that exist in both approaches. Through participation and dialogue, a distinct indigenous spiritual approach emerges that is difficult to reconcile with traditional Christian and Eurocentric world views. As I hope to demonstrate, the appearance and performance of American Indian ritual serve to not only challenge Western colonial perspectives, but also to empower indigenous approaches to spirit. In order to cultivate a more tolerant approach to the diversity and various modes of spiritual expression, a change in consciousness is needed, not necessarily for the American Indian worldview, but from the current ethnocentric worldview of the US Government which holds this form of government as the highest accomplishment of any nation thus far. This dissertation offers an approach that probes the relationship between an earth based religion and a monotheistic religion. Finally, I present a vision that allows for an understanding and/or appreciation of a spiritual approach which remains alien to Western approaches and conceptualizations of spirit. Key words: rational mind, symbolic meaning, ritual, myths, sacred, ideology, truth, indigenous worlds, cosmology, spirituality, reason, ethnography, Sundance, performance, and Native American.

Abstract (sommario):
This study aims to identify the process of symbolic efficacy related to the practice of apometry technique performed in parallel on a spiritual center and an office in the city of Porto Alegre (RS, Brazil). This technique, as defined by Azevedo (2007), is a way to run the body split, composed of seven subtle bodies, and thus cure or treat diseases of the physical or spiritual body with the help of disembodied entities (spiritual realm). Using the methods of participant observation and recording in a field diary during the ethnography, there was monitoring of calls with apometry the consultants affected by cancer. After compilation and interpretation of data carried out by ritual analysis proposed by Peirano (2002) as a set of statements and actions endowed with order, repetition and common collective goal and the discourse analysis, Caregnato and Mutti(2005) comprising the speech as a way to make sense and culture in a specific context, it has become possible to identify the elements that make up the apometry, as those involved understand its symbolic efficacy and which materiality and process flows are present. It addressed the symbolic efficacy, understood beyond the representations in light of the idea developed by Tavares and Bassi (2013), setting up a group of agents that involve symbols, myths, actions and individuals present in the relationships established by collective goals and affectations.

Abstract (sommario):
South African people love sport. In a context where sport events like the Soccer World Cup or a Super 15 rugby match can draw crowds of up to 95 000 people, we cannot ignore the importance of sport. In contrast to the popularity of sport events and the huge crowds they manage to attract, most churches struggle to get 500 people to church on a Sunday morning. This situation raises two questions, namely: “What draw people to sport?” and “Can theology and Liturgical Studies in particular, learn something from sport?”
  • the need to predict the future
  • rituals
  • physical contact
  • tribal and together
  • symbols
  • tole models
  • performance
  • the meeting space
  • Godly role
  • defying death
  • The second question is: “Why is this going on?” Here we try to make sense of what we’ve found. What theories might help us to better understand and explain the patterns and dynamics we’ve begun to discover? These are the key questions of the interpretive task of practical theological interpretation. Here I’ve used theories from the arts and sciences to better understand and explain why the ten moments I identified in sport are occurring. The third question is: “What ought to be going on?” This is the normative task of practical theological interpretation. Here theological concepts are used to interpret particular episodes, situations, contexts or in this study, the ten moments. The aim of this task is to construct ethical norms to guide our responses, and to learn from “good practice”. The fourth question is: “How might we respond?” This is the pragmatic task of practical theological interpretation. The aim is to determine strategies of action that will influence situations in ways that are desirable. Here I looked into the possibility of the liturgical inculturation of the ten moments. In conclusion suggestions for the liturgical praxis were made./ Copyright

    Abstract (sommario):
The ancient Zapotec city of Monte Albán, occupied from approximately 500 BC to 850 AD, was prehispanic Oaxaca´s largest and most important urban centre. The zooarchaeological material considered in the study dates from the Late Preclassic (400 BC-200 AD) and Early Classic (200-500 AD) periods, when growth and consolidation of Monte Albán took place. The main topic is related to the subsistence, which allowed the survival of the elite. Other uses of the taxa apart from food were also taken into account such as ritual, symbolic and functional ones. The faunal remains were found in association both with elite households, and with some public spaces near the Main Plaza. The study showed that animals were used in different activities within private and public spaces of the elite, including food processing, consumption and discarding. Some other taxa were also appreciated for their symbolic meaning and functioned as status symbols. According to the identification of the faunal bones not only domestic species such as dog and turkey were part of the diet, but wild animals were also represented by white-tailed deer, peccary and lagomorphs. Occasionally, species including fish and turtles were obtained from the rivers near Monte Albán. Faunal assemblages were probably the product of both daily activities and feasts. Subsistence patterns were detected during different periods of time and areas. The diet of Monte Albán inhabitants was discussed and compared to evidence from contemporary elite societies in the Valley of Oaxaca and Mesoamerica, such as the Mayas and Teotihuacanos.

The study of consumer behavior, including consumption rituals associated with coffee consumption and the factors involved in this process, is important to enable one to compare and understand consumer behavior both among Cariocas and Lisboetas with respect to coffee consumption. On the other hand, it is important to ascertain the influence of culture and society in this type of ritual consumption. To this end, this work aimed to interview the residents of the city of Rio de Janeiro and Lisbon - to identify customers, to profile them, the history of its use, type of usage, to describe their rituals associated with this consumer good, their habits, influence, motivational factors and their justifications for coffee consumption, showing that coffee consumption is not only an economic acquisition, but also a symbolic communication. We also found non-coffee drinkers and checked why they refuse the drink. To this end, 69 people were interviewed and the results interpretively evaluated. The results revealed that the beverage is consumed by a heterogeneous portion of the population, and that in general consumers associate the consumption of coffee to habit, pleasure, circle of friends, as a break from work, colleagues and family. This reflects that the social significance of the drink is domestic rooted, in work situations or in a circle of friends and that this meaning is strongly associated with the habits and customs of the Brazilian and Portuguese societies as the product of their cultures. As a consequence, most of the rituals of consumption of this drink are linked to their social meaning. There is a need for expansion of this market especially among young people in Rio de Janeiro. The smell is often preferable to the taste. Even those who do not like much to drink, in general, said like the smell quite well. Thus, it is crucial for managers of such establishments to know the customer, be innovative and to anticipate trends in order to meet their needs, worrying not only with the quality of its products and with the comfort of their clients, but also in adding value to coffee and to service. Giving the customers a unique experience may be an important differentiating factor since the symbolic connotation associated with this commodity is increasingly highlighted.

    Abstract (sommario):
The main task of this thesis is to elucidate the historical and symbolic contexts of female and male initiation rituals among the Mandinka as well as linkages to matricentric or mother focused religious ideologies. The main argument of this thesis is that female and male initiation rituals correspond with ancient Mande creation mythology. I argue that, in Mande cosmology, excision and circumcision are "hidden" iconographic representations that refer to the creation and transformation of the world from androgynous nature to sexually differentiated culture marked by cross-sex relations of power. Female and male initiation rituals are re-enactments of this cosmology, particularly the third phase of creation, which concerns the symbolic reproduction of culture and the social world: female elders transform female initiates into "male" "seeds" and male elders transform male initiates into "female" "vaginas". In marriage, female elders represent the "Phallus" that transplant the "male" "seed" as "bride" or "foetus" through the groom's "vagina" and into the agnatic "Womb" which the male elders represent. I argue further that when women assert excision as "tradition" and "culture" they are claiming the power of their "grandmothers", or female elders, in passing on prehistoric "matriarchal" religious ideologies that buttress women's key roles in ritual, as well as their socioeconomic and symbolic value as producers of "rice" and reproducers of humans. Chapters one to four of this thesis set the ethnographic and theoretical stage for the analysis of ritual and mythical symbols. Chapters five to seven unravel dominant initiation ritual symbols and their parallels with creation myths and conquer/settlement narratives. This thesis concludes that female and male initiation assert the interdependence and complementarity of both "matriarchy" and "patriarchy" centred on the ideological axis of mother and son, which was in the past embodied by the "circumcision" queen (ngansimbaa) and the "warrior" king (mansoo) or the custodians of "tradition" and land respectively.

ENGLISH ABSTRACT: A number of theories aimed at more effective ways of religious education have seen the light in recent years. They are all characterized by a holistic approach which emphasises the fact that we should try to utilise more than just the cognitive and verbal potential of man. This study does not merely accept this view but would also like to go further and look for practical means to implement these ideas. The central hypothesis of the study is that symbols and rituals are eminently suitable instruments if one opts for a holistic approach towards religious education. Various shifts which have recently occurred in modern society are highlighted in the study. These include a new outlook on life, new behavioural patterns, new ways of communication and new theories on communication. The complexity of our society is described because it has a major influence on the functioning of symbols and rituals. Secondly, symbols and rituals are defined and their functioning is described. Issues like the interplay between symbol and ritual and society, the way in which order and identity are given to society by symbols and rituals, the way in which symbols and rituals communicate without the use of a multitude of words, the pastoral function that symbols and rituals can fulfil and the gradual disappearance of symbols and rituals from our society are discussed. Attention is also paid to the concepts "liminality" and "commullitas", as described by the anthropologist Victor Turner. These two concepts are central to the understanding of the way in which rituals function. Thirdly, symbols and rituals are viewed from a Biblical and theological angle. The study shows that man was created as a symbol, but also underlines the importance of seeing man's body and soul as a unity. This has special implications for the manner in which we ritualize. It is also pointed out that symbols and rituals have played a major role in worship since the earliest times. The important role which kerugmatic and cultic acts, as well as the sacraments have played and can still play in the life of a believer is also described. Fourthly, the study concludes that symbols and rituals can indeed play a vital role in the process of religious education and the deepening and expansion of faith. The argument is supported in a deductive manner by the insights of people like H. Westerhoff, P. Babin, C.R. Foster, S. McLean and others. It is stressed that symbols and rituals should be used in a nuanced manner. Finally a number of proposals are made as to how these principles could be implemented in practice, together with some suggestions for further study. We believe that this should stimulate both the utilisation of symbols and rituals and further discussion and research in this regard.
Westerhoff, P. Babin, R. Osmer, C.R. Foster, S. McLean e.a.

    Abstract (sommario):
The essay is an interdisciplinary work linking History of Religion and Archaeology. The work is based on the study of the finds from a unique archaeological Italian Bronze Age site. The evidence in question has been recently excavated on the outskirts of the modern town of Noceto, Parma province, in northern Italy. It is dated to the end of the local Middle Bronze Age, which corresponds roughly to the 14th century BCE, and belongs to the local so called Terramare culture.   The site consist of a large wooden basin, which once stood in a relatively dominant position within a local Bronze Age village. The basin has been always completely filled with water. Thanks to the particular environmental conditions in the pool, organic material of cellulosic nature, such as wood, preserved very well. We therefore have very precise data about the structure itself and about an astonishing number of finds that have been retrieved from the basin. The basin was apparently used for a limited period of time, which has been estimated of a few generations or a maximum of 100 years. It was apparently used as a sort of “offer place” and hundreds of finds have been sunk in its water. Although depositions in wet areas are very common all over Europe and the Mediterranean throughout the Bronze Age, no other built structures such as the Noceto’s basin are known so far. Noceto provides strong indications of religious nature, since no productive activities or every day practices could be detected in connection to it.   With an eye to the debate on the materiality of religion, the aim of the essays is in the first place to investigate and discuss how the religious nature of the place can be understood, when working solely on the results of the religious activities that once have taken place around its margins. Secondly, the aim is also to attempt using the evidence from Noceto to discuss more broadly issues of Bronze Age religion.   The analysis of the material is carried out considering deposition rituals from the point of view of performance and agency theories. It is argued that the finds from the pool acted as indexes of agency and were part of performative event that linked together the people carrying out and/or watching the ritual, the place and the divine expressed by the place.   Considering that the significance of ritual performance has been seen, among other things, in the transformative power that is contextually assigned to rituals, it is believed that the finds from Noceto’s basin likely embodied an attempt to establish or secure positive transformations possibly in people life and in fundamental productive activities such as for instance agriculture. The sacred role of water during the Bronze Age has been addressed by several scholars, but it is generally connected to the ritual “usage” of particular places such as wetlands, caves, rivers and so on. Noceto’s basin provides the possibility for the first time to analyse an attempt to artificially and magnificently bring the sacred into a settlement area and thus possibly create the premises for more controlled or regular/regulated religious activities.

    Abstract (sommario):
This project describes the role of ritual in the basic entrainment processes of Canadian soldiers. Building on the ecological systems theories of Urie Bronfenbrenner and Roy Rappaport, this project construes human adaptation to occur within multiple interdependent planes of ordered biological, sociostructural, psychosocial and symbolic (even transcendent) meanings and interactions within integrated social ecologies or “living systems.” Rappaport’s theory supports the argument that invariant, embodied actions and impulses not encoded by ritual performers establish social order, values, motivations, competencies, dispositions and representational or symbolic meanings—understood within this project as worldview—circulating within and regulating integrated human ecologies. Ordered sequences of invariant actions and impulses have also come to be conveyed within human phylogenic and ontogenetic developmental processes. This project specifically explores the hypothesis that embodied ritual dynamics pervade the basic entrainment rite of Canadian soldiers. The analysis draws on the ritual theory of Rappaport and the psychosocial developmental theory of Erik Erikson to describe the manner in which innate social regulating impulses and liturgically ordered ritual processes are exploited, in conjunction with predictable human psychosocial developmental imperatives, to build foundational martial dispositions, a spontaneous impulse to radical solidarity and a robust, homogeneous and multivocalic worldview in Canadian soldiers. Such a worldview is adaptive to all aspects of service within the Canadian Armed Forces. The rudimentary martial worldview inscribed upon recruit soldiers and officer candidates forms the foundational background to all subsequent martial meaning and adaptation in so far as it is collectively maintained throughout the military career. This argument maintains that a ritual analysis of adaptive meaning and solidarity among soldiers has profound implications for the structure and direction of future research investigating the persistent and well documented rates of distress, maladaptation and health pathology among serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces.

    Abstract (sommario):

Title: Employees´ reactions to cultural steering in the industrial sector: A qualitative study of how workers with different employment conditions react to cultural steering.   Method: In this study a qualitative method has been implemented with an inductive method. The theoretical frame of reference is based on previous research, while the empirical work is carried out through ten semi-structured interviews.   Result & Conclusion: The results of the study show that there are both common reactions and different reactions to cultural steering. Symbols and rituals that were common to the various forms of employment were the company logo, morning meetings, uniforms, what the management symbolizes and that the work is symbolized as an intermediate job. Different reactions were the workers' way of looking at meetings and what they symbolize as well as what the form of employment symbolizes. The conclusion we can draw is that there are both differences and similarities in the employees' way of reacting to cultural governance due to employment conditions. Contribution of the study: From a theoretical perspective, the study has contributed with the employees' perspective on the organizational culture in a production organization. It also theoretically contributes to organization culture within the organization. The practical contribution the study can make is increased knowledge about cultural governance for companies in the industrial industry and how different employment conditions can affect the reactions to cultural governance.  Suggestions for further research: The study deals with three proposals for further research, to first and foremost examine several similar organizations because we have chosen to focus on one organization. Another interesting aspect is to investigate whether there are other concepts, in addition to organizational culture that influence. An additional aspect may be to examine how global production organizations function in relation to the Swedish production organizations in terms of organizational culture.

    Abstract (sommario):
Blood symbolism is a phenomenon that is commonly processed in literature, especially within the fantasy genre. Siri Pettersen’s fantasy novel Kraften (2016) does not make an exception from this tradition. In this essay I present the different levels of blood symbolism and textual aesthetics within Kraften while focusing on four perspectives: violence, sexual acts, bodily functions and rituals. As a result, I find that blood symbolism has a profound connection to Pettersen’s characters and fantasy universe as a whole; that the particular force affecting the earth can represent the Norse giant Ymir’s symbolic blood. I also find that the contemporary view of blood – menstrual or other – is impacted by ancient cultural traditions and beliefs among the very first humans walking the earth. And finally, that blood symbolism operates very much like the first law of thermodynamics in fantasy literature: it cannot disappear or be destroyed, only be recreated into new forms.

    Testo completo
    Abstract (sommario):
In La Réunion fire-walking is an annual Hindu ritual which lasts for eighteen days. Rhythmed by prayers and representations, its acme is the spectacular barefoot walk across a pit filled with hot embers. The individuals choose deliberately to submit themselves to the trial by fire, they sacrifice themselves in honour of a divinity. Within the framework of the anthropology of the performance, by the analysis of the ritual and the words of the practitioners, this research analyses the motivations which exhort an individual to commit themselves to this practice in the Creole universe. It suggests exploring the modalities by which the individual abandons a secure space and faces risk. The leading idea of this thesis is that the implication in the rite is never without reserve, it is a choice confirmed by an underlying desire – more or less conscious – of changing a situation which the devout wishes to improve, or of a problem which the devout wants to solve. In preparation for the event, the devout dives deep into the intimate and scrutinises the inner self. The rite, in its efficacy, has an impact on the future life. Fire-walking is, in fine, an answer to a need for the individual who is in search of meaning and a tool to become the artisan of one’s own life

    Testo completo
    Abstract (sommario):
The main idea of the thesis is the eco-culture, that is to say, a deep reflection on the spiritual relationship between human and nature. To explain this idea, I analyze some characteristic elements of the traditional culture, such as punishment, curse, blessing, oath, metamorphosis, empathy, reverence, sacredness, etc. These cultural elements do not concern only the mores and ethical human practices in social life, but also the relationship between human and nature. Nowadays, in everyday life, these values are sometimes expressed openly and concretely, and other times latently and not obviously. In addition to thinking, symbols and values, the eco-culture also manifests itself through behavior, concrete actions, and other routines of daily life. Amongst the conclusions of this thesis is that the environmental movements in Kosovo, aiming at changing the habits related to the environment by means of creating the environmental culture and raising ecological consciousness, must refer to the traditional Albanian eco-culture, since the latter has many common elements with contemporary environmental ethics, such as deep ecology, eco-feminism, ecological spiritualism, dark-green religion, etc

    Testo completo
    Abstract (sommario):
Since the half of the twentieth century mutual help groups such as Narcotics Anonymous have been establishing themselves as a valid therapeutic alternative for people who develop the "chemical dependence" syndrome. Emerging as a dissidence of Alcoholics Anonymous, these groups apply a pragmatic interpretation of the "addiction" concept to name that disease and classify it as incurable; they say that only the symptoms can be controlled. This way, their therapeutic approach is based on the total abstinence of any psychoactive substance use and in a set of ethical, spiritual and subjective principles that must be followed by the members with the objective of "living the recovery" through a radical change of subjective engagement in the world. This work's universe of research is the Narcotics Anonymous' network in the city of Porto Alegre. Inside this empirical universe one of the research's objectives is to demonstrate, by the presentation of four life stories of this networks' participants, that the category "Narcotics Anonymous' member" is less homogeny than it apparent to be; there is some space to instrumental appropriation of this symbolic universe and also to the preservation of subjective particularities in the process of incorporating this identity. Another objective is to discuss the implications of using the "addiction" category as a synonymous of incurable disease. Finally, this research presents an ethnographic description of the groups' meetings as composed by a rigid ritual structure, but which also preserves moments of interaction and symbol dissemination that lie "outside from the ritual".

The present paper comprehends a field study of the economic life of the inhabitants of Cariongo village in Santa Rita/MA. For the undertaking of this research we made use of a method which contemplated both qualitative and quantitative data analyses in loco observation and statistics thus, allowing us to interpret that the inhabitants of that village face a situation of crisis in the production of manioc flour, precisely, for having their right to farm their lands revoked by the INCRA, which had intervened in an agrarian conflict between the inhabitants and local grileiros . Therefore, it occurred to us that the inhabitants of Cariongo are now undergoing what we identified as a process of reconfiguration of their economic behavior. The interpretations made thereof were basically conducted by the theoretical and methodological orientation of the economic sociology of Karl Polanyi and Max Weber, apart from the analytical discussion on subsistence economies highlighting the historians Fernand Braudel and Immanuel Wallerstein who defend a rather contrary perspective to that of the neoclassical economic theory in the face of the expansion of the historical capitalism world economy. Thus, the economic field is the ultimate point of the present research and practically of the entire debate, however, there is no intention of limiting the discussion to this field alone, this way, the focus on that social reality also takes into consideration its relation to both political and cultural fields (with analysis of the educational capital) precisely given that we understand the multiple dimensions of social life as undoubtedly inseparable aspects, yet it is not about harmonious relations, the social realm is one of struggle between the agents, a realm of contention between those who dominate and those who are dominated. In regard to this analysis of the political and cultural fields we made use of the theoretical propositions of Pierre Bourdieu with his notion of domination and symbolic violence as means of appropriation of both economic and cultural capital.

    Abstract (sommario):

Marriage is an institution found in every society, culture or religion in the world. The Catholic Church has maintained most of her seven Sacraments including that of marriage. The Church of Sweden, an established Evangelical Lutheran faith, born out of the 16th century Reformation has two Sacraments excluding marriage. This field study was carried out in Gävle, Sweden in spring 2009. A comparative study of marriage in the Catholic Church and the Church of Sweden and the reason each church alludes to based on scripture and tradition was to help me, an African Catholic, understand differences between the respective churches and also understand why the Church of Sweden accepts same sex marriages. This was my motivation for writing this paper. I hope this paper will serve as a study guide to new people who come to Sweden from other cultures to enable them understand why the “Modus Operandi” regarding church marriage in Sweden is different from the church marriage in their native countries.
