Theurgy, the action of the gods during the ritual acts, a practice incorporated, in late Antiquity, by the philosophical school of Iamblichus as a techné which conducts to, considered at that time, the ultimate experience of Philosophy become like the gods (homóiosis théo) , had influenced and determined the course of the entire Neoplatonism until the end of the ancient Academy. In the work De Mysteriis, which has long been considered irrational , Iamblichus, under the pseudonym of an Egyptian priest, structures the philosophical foundations of the theurgic art, covering topics such as: oracles, possessions, prophetic dreams, divine manifestations in general. The present dissertation aims at a reassessment and rereading of the work based on recent publications of the author s collected philosophical fragments, as well as academic studies derived from them. Through a careful disentangling of the threads of his narrative, an analysis of the first three Books of the work is made, erecting the philosophical foundations of divine manifestations and of the efficacy of the ritual. It exposes thus the argumentation regarding the theurgic art, demonstrating an innovative, complex and syncretic system, nicely elaborated in a high philosophical erudition of his time. It concludes the revised reading of the first three Books and their philosophical foundations of Theurgy, in order to justify the redemption of the depreciated status of the work, pointing also to a new appraisal and repositioning of Iamblichus as a key-element author, in the history of philosophy, to the whole tradition of philosophical foundations of mystical revelations in various later philosophical currents of neoplatonic heritage, until the end of the Renaissance

The following work researchs the making of the body of Grupo Sonhus Teatro Ritual, relating to its visions, tecniques and links with various traditions. Antropological and theatrical perspectives are put in dialogue in order to offer possibilities of approaching the group praxis. Csordas (2008) and Victor Turner (1982, 1987, 2005) are mobilized to think about the body: phenomenological views, but also emphasizing the comunicational field of the body through the ideia of symbol-body. A path that aims to understand connections between ritual and performance is followed, a central aspect to Grupo Sonhus understaings, and related to their Weltanschauung, analysed with a greater focus through their practices and discourses. The making of this work took place with the performatic learning of practices, but also with participant-observation and special dialogues. We reach the idea that the group aims to a body in transformation and that it hits people seeking their transformation as well.

Testo completoA text has the ability to preserve the memory of their prior contexts. Without this function there would be no Story. If a text remained in the observer's consciousness only as itself, the past would be as a mosaic of disconnected fragments. Did mine, in the approach of the Conto de Amaro, the words of Yury Lotman. The objective of the present research in relation to Conto de Amaro, a 15thcentury narrative produced in the monastery of Alcobaça in Portugal, regarded as an enigma in the context of medieval literature is, before unveiling the origins, give a voice to the narrative. For that other texts were needed. The internal element of the tale of Amaro that allows better visibility of similar situations is the distinct temporalities living in the same narrative space. The application of the comparative method to this larger constellation with the 14 texts of research support, produced an extensive network of meanings embedded in some way to the Conto de Amaro that you can call its own memory. The identification of these meanings in the communicative mediation of culture mapped by Jesús Martín-Barbero - socialibility, institutionality, technicality, and rituality- allowed an interpretation of the tale of Amaro on several levels that are its own by adding understanding the text. At the same time, generated the perception of two distinct logics operating inside and outside the text, which called for understanding. One of them, different from that which is characteristic of descriptive and explanatory thought that, somehow, can be called the language of names. The functioning of names is so different on the set of natural languages, they can be considered a separate language. Their presence, however, is sensitive in the substrate of the cultures and the heterogeneity of human consciousness. The space they inhabit is mosaicado, their temporality is distinct and their nature is symbols. In the research, I indicate its presence and made a few comments. Among the authors who helped immensely in understanding the goal I quote Jerusa Pires Ferreira, Aron Gurevitch, Claude Lévi-Strauss, Yuri Lotman, Roman Jakobson, Boris Uspenski, Vyacheslav Ivanov and Santo Amaro

The research is dedicated to the study and applications of some ritual elements in the mass media, as an attempt to fulfill the emptiness of existence, occasioned by the arrival of consciousness in the primordial man. Justification for this topic is based on the perception that the primitive man, with his mythic thoughts, and the modern man, straight thoughts formulated, have the same collective ritual dimensional base. Ritual must be read as a group of actions defined by their symbolic importance to a specific society. The actions and symbols aren't freely chosen by individuals, they are imposed by an external source. For the primordial man, the source is the ceremonial priests. For the modern man, the source is the influence of mass media. Showing how media uses the archetypical and sacred aspect of the ritual, manipulating its core for their own needs and satisfaction: fascination, enchantment, infiltration and stereotyping. By the Cultural Semiotic prism, the thesis aspires to contribute to studies and cultural communication, aiming for the rescue of complexity in the means of communication. How primitive rituals formats still survive in modern media, albeit in a saturated way, is the question this study addresses. Adopted methodological procedure was a research of qualitative character, involving analysis and bibliographical survey. As the theorical board of references are the authors B. Cyrulink, D. Kamper, E. Morin, H. Pross, I. Bystrina, J. Hillman, K. Lorenz, M. Berman, M. S. Contrera, N. Baitello Jr., N. Sevcenko, V. Flusser, V. Romano e Z. Bauman. The conclusion is that, even if banalized and distorted, the principles of symbolic reorganization of the ritual still exert considerable influence in the media and in the mindset of the modern man

Testo completoThis study aims to identify the process of symbolic efficacy related to the practice of apometry technique performed in parallel on a spiritual center and an office in the city of Porto Alegre (RS, Brazil). This technique, as defined by Azevedo (2007), is a way to run the body split, composed of seven subtle bodies, and thus cure or treat diseases of the physical or spiritual body with the help of disembodied entities (spiritual realm). Using the methods of participant observation and recording in a field diary during the ethnography, there was monitoring of calls with apometry the consultants affected by cancer. After compilation and interpretation of data carried out by ritual analysis proposed by Peirano (2002) as a set of statements and actions endowed with order, repetition and common collective goal and the discourse analysis, Caregnato and Mutti(2005) comprising the speech as a way to make sense and culture in a specific context, it has become possible to identify the elements that make up the apometry, as those involved understand its symbolic efficacy and which materiality and process flows are present. It addressed the symbolic efficacy, understood beyond the representations in light of the idea developed by Tavares and Bassi (2013), setting up a group of agents that involve symbols, myths, actions and individuals present in the relationships established by collective goals and affectations.

The study of consumer behavior, including consumption rituals associated with coffee consumption and the factors involved in this process, is important to enable one to compare and understand consumer behavior both among Cariocas and Lisboetas with respect to coffee consumption. On the other hand, it is important to ascertain the influence of culture and society in this type of ritual consumption. To this end, this work aimed to interview the residents of the city of Rio de Janeiro and Lisbon - to identify customers, to profile them, the history of its use, type of usage, to describe their rituals associated with this consumer good, their habits, influence, motivational factors and their justifications for coffee consumption, showing that coffee consumption is not only an economic acquisition, but also a symbolic communication. We also found non-coffee drinkers and checked why they refuse the drink. To this end, 69 people were interviewed and the results interpretively evaluated. The results revealed that the beverage is consumed by a heterogeneous portion of the population, and that in general consumers associate the consumption of coffee to habit, pleasure, circle of friends, as a break from work, colleagues and family. This reflects that the social significance of the drink is domestic rooted, in work situations or in a circle of friends and that this meaning is strongly associated with the habits and customs of the Brazilian and Portuguese societies as the product of their cultures. As a consequence, most of the rituals of consumption of this drink are linked to their social meaning. There is a need for expansion of this market especially among young people in Rio de Janeiro. The smell is often preferable to the taste. Even those who do not like much to drink, in general, said like the smell quite well. Thus, it is crucial for managers of such establishments to know the customer, be innovative and to anticipate trends in order to meet their needs, worrying not only with the quality of its products and with the comfort of their clients, but also in adding value to coffee and to service. Giving the customers a unique experience may be an important differentiating factor since the symbolic connotation associated with this commodity is increasingly highlighted.

Testo completoENGLISH ABSTRACT: A number of theories aimed at more effective ways of religious education have seen the light in recent years. They are all characterized by a holistic approach which emphasises the fact that we should try to utilise more than just the cognitive and verbal potential of man. This study does not merely accept this view but would also like to go further and look for practical means to implement these ideas. The central hypothesis of the study is that symbols and rituals are eminently suitable instruments if one opts for a holistic approach towards religious education. Various shifts which have recently occurred in modern society are highlighted in the study. These include a new outlook on life, new behavioural patterns, new ways of communication and new theories on communication. The complexity of our society is described because it has a major influence on the functioning of symbols and rituals. Secondly, symbols and rituals are defined and their functioning is described. Issues like the interplay between symbol and ritual and society, the way in which order and identity are given to society by symbols and rituals, the way in which symbols and rituals communicate without the use of a multitude of words, the pastoral function that symbols and rituals can fulfil and the gradual disappearance of symbols and rituals from our society are discussed. Attention is also paid to the concepts "liminality" and "commullitas", as described by the anthropologist Victor Turner. These two concepts are central to the understanding of the way in which rituals function. Thirdly, symbols and rituals are viewed from a Biblical and theological angle. The study shows that man was created as a symbol, but also underlines the importance of seeing man's body and soul as a unity. This has special implications for the manner in which we ritualize. It is also pointed out that symbols and rituals have played a major role in worship since the earliest times. The important role which kerugmatic and cultic acts, as well as the sacraments have played and can still play in the life of a believer is also described. Fourthly, the study concludes that symbols and rituals can indeed play a vital role in the process of religious education and the deepening and expansion of faith. The argument is supported in a deductive manner by the insights of people like H. Westerhoff, P. Babin, C.R. Foster, S. McLean and others. It is stressed that symbols and rituals should be used in a nuanced manner. Finally a number of proposals are made as to how these principles could be implemented in practice, together with some suggestions for further study. We believe that this should stimulate both the utilisation of symbols and rituals and further discussion and research in this regard.
Westerhoff, P. Babin, R. Osmer, C.R. Foster, S. McLean e.a.

Testo completoTitle: Employees´ reactions to cultural steering in the industrial sector: A qualitative study of how workers with different employment conditions react to cultural steering. Method: In this study a qualitative method has been implemented with an inductive method. The theoretical frame of reference is based on previous research, while the empirical work is carried out through ten semi-structured interviews. Result & Conclusion: The results of the study show that there are both common reactions and different reactions to cultural steering. Symbols and rituals that were common to the various forms of employment were the company logo, morning meetings, uniforms, what the management symbolizes and that the work is symbolized as an intermediate job. Different reactions were the workers' way of looking at meetings and what they symbolize as well as what the form of employment symbolizes. The conclusion we can draw is that there are both differences and similarities in the employees' way of reacting to cultural governance due to employment conditions. Contribution of the study: From a theoretical perspective, the study has contributed with the employees' perspective on the organizational culture in a production organization. It also theoretically contributes to organization culture within the organization. The practical contribution the study can make is increased knowledge about cultural governance for companies in the industrial industry and how different employment conditions can affect the reactions to cultural governance. Suggestions for further research: The study deals with three proposals for further research, to first and foremost examine several similar organizations because we have chosen to focus on one organization. Another interesting aspect is to investigate whether there are other concepts, in addition to organizational culture that influence. An additional aspect may be to examine how global production organizations function in relation to the Swedish production organizations in terms of organizational culture.

Testo completoIn La Réunion fire-walking is an annual Hindu ritual which lasts for eighteen days. Rhythmed by prayers and representations, its acme is the spectacular barefoot walk across a pit filled with hot embers. The individuals choose deliberately to submit themselves to the trial by fire, they sacrifice themselves in honour of a divinity. Within the framework of the anthropology of the performance, by the analysis of the ritual and the words of the practitioners, this research analyses the motivations which exhort an individual to commit themselves to this practice in the Creole universe. It suggests exploring the modalities by which the individual abandons a secure space and faces risk. The leading idea of this thesis is that the implication in the rite is never without reserve, it is a choice confirmed by an underlying desire – more or less conscious – of changing a situation which the devout wishes to improve, or of a problem which the devout wants to solve. In preparation for the event, the devout dives deep into the intimate and scrutinises the inner self. The rite, in its efficacy, has an impact on the future life. Fire-walking is, in fine, an answer to a need for the individual who is in search of meaning and a tool to become the artisan of one’s own life

Testo completoThe main idea of the thesis is the eco-culture, that is to say, a deep reflection on the spiritual relationship between human and nature. To explain this idea, I analyze some characteristic elements of the traditional culture, such as punishment, curse, blessing, oath, metamorphosis, empathy, reverence, sacredness, etc. These cultural elements do not concern only the mores and ethical human practices in social life, but also the relationship between human and nature. Nowadays, in everyday life, these values are sometimes expressed openly and concretely, and other times latently and not obviously. In addition to thinking, symbols and values, the eco-culture also manifests itself through behavior, concrete actions, and other routines of daily life. Amongst the conclusions of this thesis is that the environmental movements in Kosovo, aiming at changing the habits related to the environment by means of creating the environmental culture and raising ecological consciousness, must refer to the traditional Albanian eco-culture, since the latter has many common elements with contemporary environmental ethics, such as deep ecology, eco-feminism, ecological spiritualism, dark-green religion, etc

Testo completoSince the half of the twentieth century mutual help groups such as Narcotics Anonymous have been establishing themselves as a valid therapeutic alternative for people who develop the "chemical dependence" syndrome. Emerging as a dissidence of Alcoholics Anonymous, these groups apply a pragmatic interpretation of the "addiction" concept to name that disease and classify it as incurable; they say that only the symptoms can be controlled. This way, their therapeutic approach is based on the total abstinence of any psychoactive substance use and in a set of ethical, spiritual and subjective principles that must be followed by the members with the objective of "living the recovery" through a radical change of subjective engagement in the world. This work's universe of research is the Narcotics Anonymous' network in the city of Porto Alegre. Inside this empirical universe one of the research's objectives is to demonstrate, by the presentation of four life stories of this networks' participants, that the category "Narcotics Anonymous' member" is less homogeny than it apparent to be; there is some space to instrumental appropriation of this symbolic universe and also to the preservation of subjective particularities in the process of incorporating this identity. Another objective is to discuss the implications of using the "addiction" category as a synonymous of incurable disease. Finally, this research presents an ethnographic description of the groups' meetings as composed by a rigid ritual structure, but which also preserves moments of interaction and symbol dissemination that lie "outside from the ritual".

The present paper comprehends a field study of the economic life of the inhabitants of Cariongo village in Santa Rita/MA. For the undertaking of this research we made use of a method which contemplated both qualitative and quantitative data analyses in loco observation and statistics thus, allowing us to interpret that the inhabitants of that village face a situation of crisis in the production of manioc flour, precisely, for having their right to farm their lands revoked by the INCRA, which had intervened in an agrarian conflict between the inhabitants and local grileiros . Therefore, it occurred to us that the inhabitants of Cariongo are now undergoing what we identified as a process of reconfiguration of their economic behavior. The interpretations made thereof were basically conducted by the theoretical and methodological orientation of the economic sociology of Karl Polanyi and Max Weber, apart from the analytical discussion on subsistence economies highlighting the historians Fernand Braudel and Immanuel Wallerstein who defend a rather contrary perspective to that of the neoclassical economic theory in the face of the expansion of the historical capitalism world economy. Thus, the economic field is the ultimate point of the present research and practically of the entire debate, however, there is no intention of limiting the discussion to this field alone, this way, the focus on that social reality also takes into consideration its relation to both political and cultural fields (with analysis of the educational capital) precisely given that we understand the multiple dimensions of social life as undoubtedly inseparable aspects, yet it is not about harmonious relations, the social realm is one of struggle between the agents, a realm of contention between those who dominate and those who are dominated. In regard to this analysis of the political and cultural fields we made use of the theoretical propositions of Pierre Bourdieu with his notion of domination and symbolic violence as means of appropriation of both economic and cultural capital.

Testo completoMarriage is an institution found in every society, culture or religion in the world. The Catholic Church has maintained most of her seven Sacraments including that of marriage. The Church of Sweden, an established Evangelical Lutheran faith, born out of the 16th century Reformation has two Sacraments excluding marriage. This field study was carried out in Gävle, Sweden in spring 2009. A comparative study of marriage in the Catholic Church and the Church of Sweden and the reason each church alludes to based on scripture and tradition was to help me, an African Catholic, understand differences between the respective churches and also understand why the Church of Sweden accepts same sex marriages. This was my motivation for writing this paper. I hope this paper will serve as a study guide to new people who come to Sweden from other cultures to enable them understand why the “Modus Operandi” regarding church marriage in Sweden is different from the church marriage in their native countries.
