Purpose To study fracture characteristics of jointed rock masses under blasting load, the RFPA2D analysis software for dynamic fracture of rocks based on the finite element method and statistical damage theory was used. Design/methodology/approach On this basis, this research simulated the fracture process of rock masses in blasting with different joint geometrical characteristics and mainly analysed the influences of distance from joints to blasting holes, the length of joints, the number of joints and joint angle on fracture of rock masses. The joints in the rock mass are essential for the stability of rocky slopes, and the destabilization damage of the slope is often directly related to the joints. In this study, in order to reveal the instability process and mechanism of rock slopes from a microscale perspective, the DEM simulations for rocky slopes of the K88 + 400∼K88 + 540 section of Zhongkai Expressway are carried out considering the influence of joints. Based on the findings of the on-site jointed structural surfaces, a rocky slope model containing two sets of intermittent joints was constructed, and the linear parallel bo

The existence of parallel joints has an impact on the size effect of the uniaxial compressive strength of rock, but the relationship is yet to be obtained. The influence of parallel-joint spacing on the size effect of rock uniaxial compressive strength is explored by analyzing the stress–strain curves of rocks with different parallel-joint spacings and rock sizes. Cyclic loads are commonly encountered in geotechnical engineering; however most constitutive models do not account for the effect that such loads can have on the mechanical behaviour of soils and rocks. This work is concerned with the behaviour of jointed rock and, as the overall mechanical behaviour of jointed rock is usually dominated by the mechanical behaviour of the joints, it is focused on the behaviour of rock joints under cyclic loads. In particular, an extension of the existed constitutive model for cyclically loaded rock joints is presented. Variations of rock joint stiffness in both

In this regard, joints’ peak shear strength is the controlling parameter. However, given the difficulty in estimating it, shear tests are often performed. These are often quite expensive and also time consuming and, therefore, it would be valuable if shear tests could be artificially performed using numerical models. The stability of rock masses is influenced by the occurrence of rock joints. Therefore, the shear strength of rock joints must be considered in dimensioning of underground constructions. One way to predict the shear strength is through usage of failure criteria, which are validated from results of direct shear tests under controlled laboratory conditions. Consequently, the quality of the results from the tests are crucial to the accuracy with which the criteria will be able to predict the shear strength. Abstract (sommario):
Near-to-surface geothermal energy with heat pumps is state of the art and is already widespread in Switzerland. In the future energy system, medium-deep to deep geothermal energy (1 to 6 kilometres) will, in addition, play an important role. To the forefront is the supply of heat for buildings and industrial processes. This form of geothermal energy utilisation requires a highly permeable underground area that allows a fluid – usually water – to absorb the naturally existing rock heat and then transport it to the surface. Sedimentary rocks are usually permeable by nature, whereas for granites
