Članek primerjalno obravnava dve zgodnji teoretični besedili o romanu: Razpravo o izvoru romanov (Traité sur l´Origine des romans) P.D. Hueta (1670) ter Razmislek o romanih (Idée sur les romans) Markiza de Sada (1800). Huet svoje prepričanje, da roman izvira na Orientu, med drugim utemeljuje z ugotovitvami o temperamentu orientalskih ljudstev, ki po njegovem mnenju v največji možni meri ustreza zahtevam romanesknega žanra. Roman law texts from Merowingian Gaul make a difference between cives Romani, Latini and dediticii, all considered as Romans. This difference mattered only to slaves who had been freed.
