The paper presents a detailed analysis of the market development stages of public transport bus services. Establishment of a new management model on the urban ground public transport entails a need to create a competitive market, through effective distribution of the city route network. As part of this goal we propose the route grouping method based on weighted average profitability and investigate some Moscow route network. The analysis and classification of these routes can determine the degree of variation in the route profitability. Drawing on the data obtained, we offer certain conclusions concerning the feasibility of a more detailed diversification of route portfolio followed by its further distribution among passenger carriers on regular urban bus routes.

Maritime transport routes, or corridors, imply specific courses of movement for people and goods (freight) on maritime routes and bring multiple benefits to the area through which they pass. The action and influence frame of a single route in the international transport flow is defined by an increasingly pronounced international competition at the regional and/or global transport market. Considering that the competitiveness of a transport route represents the fundamental factor of its valorization in the transport services market, the question of what defines and conditions the competitiveness mentioned above should be considered. This paper analyzes the competitiveness of the Northern Sea Route as a shorter maritime route between Asia and Europe. Under the new climate conditions in which, over the past few years in September, the Northern Sea Route course is completely ice-free, the indicated route represents a sort of competition to the alternative route through the Suez Canal. Taking into account that the competitiveness of a transport route is conditioned by market determination as well as by the quantity of freight flow through the transport route, the main research aim of this paper is to analyze the current and potential transport supply and demand as well as the Northern Sea Route's competitive environment in order to assess, in this regard its valorization and affirmation possibilities.

This research addresses the problem of planning tourism routes and finding appropriate shopping (market place) locations for agricultural product transportation. Generally, tourists visit popular tourism attractions; and generally, unpopular tourism attractions do not stimulate the economy, trade, or local income. Popular tourism attractions that are located far away from each other require the transportation of local products, and tourists must make decisions as to which locations to visit when planning their vacation. Planning a tourism route while balancing tourism attractions and shopping markets is important for the economic stimulation of tourism. This work presents a problem-solving method for tourism route-planning for a particular case study in Chiang Rai province, Thailand, using the Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search (ALNS) method. Six main destruction and five repair cycles in the ALNS method were applied to solve the tourism route design problem and to find the best solution so that tourists can visit all of the main attractions. We found that 13 tourism routes provide the shortest travel distance for each travel route. The total distance traveled was 2538.02 km for all routes. To balance the tourism on all routes, the popular and less popular tourism attractions were combined. For all routes, the shopping market location is the best place for tourism products to be sold and where tourist relaxation occurs. The results from ALNS were compared with the results from those obtained by the exact Lingo program V11. The ALNS algorithm results were not significantly different from the Lingo results. For the computational results for all examined cases, the ALNS algorithm was shown to be competitive, with short processing times given the sizes of the problems. For the traveling distance, the ALNS result significantly differs from the exact method by approximately 1.12%, and had a better effect than the exact method by approximately 99% in terms of processing time. Therefore, the proposed methodology provides an effective and high-quality solution for tourism route planning.

In this paper, we use Market Share Instability (MSI) as a measure of the intensity of competition among airlines on a route. Using a panel of 400 U.S. domestic routes over the 1987-1993 period, we try to explain variations in MSI. We find that MSI is higher in moderately concentrated routes and in routes that include a bankrupt carrier. Airport dominance increases MSI if the dominant airline faces small competitors. Finally, we show that MSI was lower in the early nineties than in the late eighties.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the establishments of Chinese wholesale and retail market platforms in China and Europe, which create a new take-off route for SMEs from China, and to theorize on this as a new collective route to internationalization. Design/methodology/approach – An exploratory case study has been undertaken covering four Chinese market platforms: the role model in Yiwu, China, and the establishments in Warsaw, Poland; Budapest, Hungary; and Kalmar, Sweden. Findings – A new collective internationalization route is identified, driven by the collectivistic Chinese culture. Here Chinese SMEs diverge from traditionally suggested paths of internationalization, taking off independently from the domestic business network but form a joint market platform in the foreign market. This collective behavior compensates for the resource constraints of internationally inexperienced Chinese SMEs. From the market platform, they plug into the local market network and are provided with economies of scale and scope, ultimately making them internationally competitive. This collective route offers the potential for joint learning and risk reduction when entering distant markets in the early internationalization stages. Research limitations/implications – For Chinese SMEs, co-location in a market platform in foreign market offers the advantages of lowering institutional distance and uncertainty as the firms collectively handle these matters. A limitation of the study concerns the generalizability, as few cases are studied. Still, being an unstudied phenomena there are important empirical contributions to be made. Originality/value – The paper reports on an overlooked empirical phenomenon, namely the establishment of Chinese wholesale and retail market platforms in China and Europe. Through this establishment a new collective route into the global market by Chinese SMEs is identified and theorized.

The use of the Northern Sea Route as a transport corridor between the European and Asian continents is currently attracting increased interest in the trade, economic and logistic communities. The possibility to deliver cargo from Europe to Asia and back much faster is extremely attractive for cargo owners in the conditions of instability of the development of modern regional economic trends, turbulence of the global economy as a whole. In the conditions of rapidly changing market demand and supply in the markets of food products in Europe and Asia, the use of the Northern Sea Route as the shortest route between two continents is becoming especially popular for operators in the field of perishable goods logistics. Nevertheless, the possibility of using the Northern Sea Route is significantly limited by the complexity of transporting cargo in the autumn-winter period due to the need for ice pilotage. Assessment of the competitiveness of the Northern Sea Route compared to traditional routes seems to be an important aspect of the formation of consumer preferences among the owners of perishable goods and operators of transportation in reefer containers. The paper proposes a method for assessing the competitiveness of the Northern Sea Route with respect to alternative routes, taking into account the specifics of transportation of perishable goods in reefer containers. Criteria and indicators of competitiveness of the compared routes are presented, covering the full range of economic and technological components that determine the handling and transportation of perishable goods in reefer containers.

This Work Project studies established distribution channels strategies’ adjustments due to continuous customers’ needs updates and market challenges. Qualitative and quantitative views support the analysis, based on two real cases within the same company. It was found that cases’ negotiations may turn comparable premises in distinct developments and outcomes. Lessons from the past, if used to address future cases, would be helpful through customer satisfaction focused perspectives. It is suggested that distribution approach choices may not be homogeneous along the business and they must rely on who is able to effectively complete the process from product source to the customer.

This thesis examines the determinants of air route profitability in the European Union and the cooperating countries of Norway and Switzerland. Building on the assumption that only profitable routes are served, I develop a set of probit models that specify route service as a function of route characteristics, airline networks' attributes, airline partnerships and competition. Estimation results show that route profitability increases with population size and decreases with flight distance and the time efficiency of car travel relative to air travel. An airline's airport presence, that is, its share of airport operations, exerts a significant, positive effect on its route profitability, and so does airport presence of its group or allied partners. Competitive effects are asymmetric across airline business types. This paper's contribution to existing airline-route profitability studies lies in accounting for airline cooperation, controlling for an alternative mode of transport, and using EU data for estimation.

Literature indicates that events like a wine festival have many role players involved that need each other for them to be successful. The more role players there are, the more complex the event becomes, as in the case of the Wacky Wine Festival which is spread over 48 wine farms. The most important role players are the visitors and wine farmers that represent the demand and supply side of the festival. Local enterprises, wine farmers and the festival organisers put a lot of effort into the event, such as their time, money and skills. It is essential for these role players to know that they will get a return on their investment and for the host community to know that the festival will make a contribution to their local economy. Furthermore, literature indicates that the festival can improve the economic position of the role players by targeting the high spending market through intensive marketing that focuses on this particular segment. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the contribution of the Wacky Wine Festival to the local economy and to compile a profile of the heavy spender. To achieve the latter, a quantitative study was carried out by means of two surveys via questionnaires that were handed out to both the visitor and wine farmer. The data was then captured in Microsoft© Excel©. In Article 1 (Chapter 2) the sales multiplier effect and an analytical framework were used to determine the contribution of the festival to the host community. In Article 2 (Chapter 3) different tests and analyses were used to compile a profile of the heavy spender such as the K–means clustering, Chi–Squared, the Mann–Whitney non–parametric test and an ANOVA analysis. The results from Article 1 (Chapter 2) showed that the Wacky Wine Festival had an positive economic contribution of an estimated R29.9 million to the host community`s economy. From a demand and supply point of view, the visitors contributed R15.4 million and the wine farmers R6 million. From the results, it could be derived that the festival had low leakages in comparison with other festivals. iii The results from Article 2 (Chapter 3) indicated that the heavy and low spenders differ in terms of gender, language, age, occupation, number of people paying for in travelling group, residence and number of days spent at the festival. It was clear from the results that if the festival organisers and wine farmers focus marketing strategies on the high spending segment, this can lead to a R10 million increase in the Wacky Wine Festival’s revenue, thus improving the economic contribution of the event to the local economy of Robertson.

After a court imposed desegregation plan ended in 1996, the Baton Rouge, Louisiana school district created neighborhood attendance zones for its schools, followed by a series of attendance zone changes. We use data from 1994 to 2002 to examine the impact of changes in school characteristics on simultaneous determination of house prices and liquidity in the market. A simultaneous equations model of sales price and tine-on-market is adopted that extends the hedonic price model by controlling for localized neighborhood market conditions. Our empirical results show that improving and declining school performance can have asymmetric capitalization effects. Further, as indicated by the search-market model, liquidity absorbs part of the capitalization of school quality; for example, declining school performance prolongs houses’ marketing time.

Dissertação de Mestrado Integrado em Arquitetura, com a especialização em Arquitetura apresentada na Faculdade de Arquitetura da Universidade de Lisboa para obtenção do grau de Mestre.
Em Portugal, o período industrial foi um dos maiores impulsionadores do crescimento e desenvolvimento urbano. Em meados do século XIX, com a aceleração das industrializações, a vila do Barreiro torna-se um importante polo industrial para o restante País. Contudo após vários anos de auge industrial o vasto património é quase inexistente, devoluto ou em ruínas, tornando-se assim numa zona com fortes dissonâncias e grandes vazios urbanos. A escolha deste território surge da oportunidade de revitalizar um lugar dotado de um património natural significativo, sustentado num processo de intervenção minimalista e que valoriza a identidade e a memória do lugar. A componente chave da oportunidade enunciada, corresponde à possibilidade de criação de novos usos, quer para os vazios urbanos quer para os edifícios existentes a reabilitar. A proposta incide na zona ribeirinha de Alburrica, tendo como objetivo a reabilitação da Quinta do Braamcamp e do Moinho de maré, assim como a dinamização de atividades desportivas, recreativas tornando este lugar com cariz turístico e consequente desenvolvimento económico local. A valorização das zonas verdes existentes consiste na conceção e otimização das acessibilidades dentro do local de intervenção assim como a sua ligação com o centro da cidade do Barreiro através de percursos em palafita.
ABSTRACT: In Portugal, the Industrial Period was one of the main drivers of urban growth and development. In the middle of the nineteenth century, with the acceleration of the industrialization, the village of Barreiro becomes an industrial center for the rest of the country. However, after several years of industrial boom the vast heritage is almost nonexistent, empty or in ruins making it an area of great asymmetries and marked by large urban voids. The choice of this territory arises from the opportunity of revitalizing a place endowed with a significant natural heritage, in a sustainable way and through a process of minimal intervention and that values the identity and memory of the place. The key component of this opportunity concerns the possibility of creating new uses, both for the urban voids and for the existing buildings being rehabilitated. The proposal focuses on the riverside area of Alburrica, aiming at the rehabilitation of the Quinta do Braamcamp and its Tide Mill, as well as the promotion of sports and recreational activities, making this place a tourist destination and, consequently, fostering local economic development. The enhancement of existing green areas consists of the design and optimization of accessibilities within the intervention site, as well of its connection with the center of the city of Barreiro through stilt routes.

In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde ein analytisches Verfahren zur quantitativen Bestimmung von Fettsäureethylestern (FSEE) im Haar und in Hautoberflächenlipiden mittels Headspace-Festphasenmikroextraktion (HS-SPME) und Gaschromatographie-Massenspektrometrie (GC-MS) sowie eine auf Hochleistungs-Flüssigchromatographie mit Photodiodenarray-Detektion (HPLC-DAD) basierende Methode zur Bestimmung der Squalenkonzentrationen in Lipidextrakten entwickelt. Die bei Untersuchung von Proben verschiedener Konsumentengruppen erhaltenen Konzentrationswerte wurden hinsichtlich ihrer Eignung als Marker für chronisch exzessiven Alkoholkonsum untersucht. Aus den Ergebnissen lässt sich schließen, dass Fettsäureethylester im Haar als Alkoholmarker den bisher üblicherweise genutzten Markern wie GGT, CDT oder MCV bezüglich Sensitivität und Spezifität mindestens ebenbürtig sind. Es wurden die folgenden vorläufige Cut-off-Werte festgelegt: wenn sich im Haar für die Summenkonzentration der vier in der höchsten Konzentration vorkommenden FSEE (Ethylmyristat, Ethylpalmitat, Ethyloleat und Ethylstearat) ein Wert > 1 ng/mg ergibt, kann mit hoher Sicherheit von chronisch exzessivem Alkoholkonsum ausgegangen werden, für Abstinenzler werden typischerweise Werte < 0,4 ng/mg gefunden. Durch Bildung des Quotienten der FSEE-Konzentrationen und der Squalenkonzentrationen wurden relative FSEE-Konzentrationen erhalten, die im Falle der Haaranalyse zu einer Verbesserung der Zuordnungssicherheit zu den entsprechenden Konsumentengruppen führten bzw. bei der Analyse von Hautoberflächenlipiden einen sinnvollen Vergleich der Werte erst ermöglichten. Als vorläufiger Cut-off-Wert für die relativen FSEE-Konzentrationen wurde ein Wert von 2 ng/µg vorgeschlagen. Als weiteres wichtiges Ergebnis der Arbeit wurde der Einlagerungsmechanismus der FSEE ins Haar aufgeklärt. Es konnte gezeigt werden, dass Fettsäureethylester in erster Linie über das Sebum ins Haar gelangen.
The current doctoral thesis presents the development of an analytical procedure for the quantitative analysis of fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) in hair and in skin surface lipids using headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) as well as a method based on high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection (HPLC-DAD) to determine squalene concentrations in lipid extracts. The results obtained from analysis of samples from different alcohol consuming groups showed that FAEE are suitable markers for long-term alcohol misuse. Concerning sensitivity and specifity they are at least as good as other commonly used markers like GGT, CDT or MCV. The following provisional cut-off values were established: for chronically excessive alcohol consumption, the sum of the four FAEE (ethyl myristate, ethyl palmitate, ethyl oleate and ethyl stearate) found in the highest mean concentrations should be > 1 ng/mg in hair; for non-drinkers, concentrations < 0,4 ng/mg are typical. The quotient obtained by dividing the FAEE concentration by the squalene concentration was defined as the relative FAEE concentration, which provides a better classification of the samples regarding the consumer groups through hair analysis. Relative FAEE values also allow a reasonable comparison in the case of skin surface lipid concentrations for the first time. 2 ng/µg is suggested as a preliminary cut-off value. As a further important result of the current work, the mechanism of incorporation of FAEE into hair was clarified. It was shown that fatty acid ethyl esters are incorporated into hair mainly through sebum.

Com um caráter introdutório e a partir daí construir alguns apontamentos iniciais para uma interpretação crítica do filme. Através desta aventura político-cinematográfica comentar um fragmento do que se oculta atrás das barricadas da memória.
This research aims, having as an leit-motif Chris Marker and the film Le fond de l\'air est rouge, making a historical retrospective of the major debates on the experience of French militant cinema, introductory in nature and serving as first notes to a critical interpretation of the film. Through this cinematics and politics adventure it trys to make a comment on a fragment of what is hidden behind the barricades of memory.

Cette thèse a mené une étude comparative entre les tontines pratiquées sur le marché noir-africain de Château-Rouge et celles pratiquées dans les marchés de Brazzaville. Au Congo, les tontines se développent par défaut d'autres institutions monétaires et de protection sociale accessibles aux populations. Les tontines sont donc un instrument de sécurisation financière évitant aux petits commerçants de dépenser l’intégralité de leurs bénéfices au quotidien. Elles permettent à leurs membres de se protéger de la propension à gaspiller de l’argent, de le mettre à l’abri des voleurs et de la pression des proches. Si les tontines constituent une alternative au système bancaire formel pour les populations à faibles revenus monétaires, elles drainent également une épargne qui alimente des comptes-épargne et qui sert de fonds de roulement aux micro-finances. Dans le contexte migratoire parisien, les femmes congolaises ressentent le besoin de transposer ce dispositif : les tontines deviennent un outil d’intégration sur le marché et un vecteur de socialisation. Par ailleurs, les femmes en situation irrégulière étant exclues du système bancaire et assurantiel français, elles ont recours aux tontines comme instrument d’épargne et de protection sociale. A travers le financement de projets dans le pays d’origine, les tontines établissent un pont entre populations immigrées et leurs proches restés au pays. Dans le cas particulier des femmes prostituées, les tontines apparaissent comme un outil de blanchiment symbolique de l’« argent sale » de la prostitution
This PhD thesis is a comparative study between tontines practiced on the African migrant market in the Parisian district of Château-Rouge and those practiced in the market of Brazzaville, Congo. In the Congo, tontines spring up in the absence of other accessible monetary and social protection institutions. Therefore tontines are an instrument of financial security enabling small businesses to avoid spending all their earnings on a daily basis. They allow for members to protect themselves from their inclination to overspend or waste money and to shelter money from theft or pressure from peers. Tontines constitute an alternative to the formal banking system for populations with low monetary income, but they also channel savings which fuel savings accounts and serve as working capital to micro-finances institutions. In the Parisian migratory context, Congolese women feel the need to replicate this device: tontines thus become a market integration instrument and a vehicle for socialization. Moreover illegal female immigrants excluded from the French banking and insurance system resort to tontines as a means of social protection and savings. Through financing projects in their country of origin, tontines establish a bridge between immigrant populations and their relatives back home. In the specific case of female prostitutes, tontines appear to be an instrument of symbolic dirty-money laundering

Hosts of small start up companies and private institutions have become and are being enamored with the apparent feasibility of readily converting small turbochargers (T/C’s) into low cost microturbines. Turbocharger to micro turbine convertibility has indeed been demonstrated primarily motivated as an opening bid to gain recognized credentials into the potentially huge small turbogenerator commercial market. It is coincidently opportune that advanced technology development of the small T/C with a single stage centrifugal compressor and single stage radial inflow turbine is currently under going a meta-morphis in order to satisfy green environment mandated automobile fuel economy and emissions goals. The similarity of the T/C to the conventionally adopted microturbine configuration with radial compressor and turbine components plus undergoing T/C technology advancement entices the virtues of low manufacturing cost attributes associated with the millions of T/Cs that are produced annually. This paper examines the viability of these converted T/C efforts in attempting to penetrate the small gas turbine market, versus those more specially developed, albeit more costly units, already being marketed by established microturbine manufacturers.

Fortresses are architectural pearls, cultural sites, event locations, experience places and memorials, mostly situated at breath-taking places on mountains, rivers or in the under-ground. Fortresses are monuments of common European history, they mirror the past into the present, connect cultures and offer deep insights into the historical conflicts. Fortified monuments are part of what makes Europe unique and attractive. This cultural heritage has to be preserved and made accessible for the culture tourism at the same time. The Iberian fortified heritage has big potential for new culture touristic topics and travel routes away from mass tourism. Therefore, cultural routes are a useful instrument. The European Culture Route Fortified Monuments –FORTE CULTURA®– is the European umbrella brand for fortress tourism. It offers useful instruments for international marketing of fortified monuments. The implementation of the attractive architectura militaris of the Iberian Peninsula into the culture route FORTE CULTURA® makes it possible to network this culture asset touristically, make it visible and experienceable on international tourism markets and market it Europe-wide. By implementing a new touristic regional brand “FORTE CULTURA – Iberian Fortified Heritage” the qualified culture tourism will be addressed. This supports a balance between over and under presented monuments and extends the sphere of activity of local actors onto whole Europe.

Abstract The UK was the first major industrialised nation to commit to a Net Zero target by 2050, and Scotland has an even more ambitious target to reach Net Zero by 2045. To realise these targets, hydrogen will play a leading role in the decarbonisation of multiple sectors including industry, transport, heat and power. Offshore wind can be a core component of our future energy infrastructure, and the scale of its potential role in hydrogen production has recently drawn wider attention from policy makers, developers and potential users across a range of sectors. Hydrogen as a route to market for offshore wind therefore presents a transformative opportunity for the North Sea oil and gas sector and the associated UK supply chain. Existing skills and infrastructure in this region can be leveraged to achieve a leading position in this emerging clean fuel source. This opportunity is particularly relevant for sites in the North Sea which are further from shore with good wind resource, where power transmission costs and/or losses would be prohibitive. Additionally, hydrogen offers an interesting route to market for projects unable to obtain firm grid connection, for sites in regions with high grid charges, or where sufficient government revenue support for conventional power generation is not available for all good quality sites.

Abstract In recent years, due to the globalization of the market and the expansion of e-commerce, logistics optimization attracts keen interest from manufacturing companies and service providers. The service area expands wider and the number of customers increases rapidly, thus logistics service providers need to determine the customer assignments and the routes for their trucks considering not only the efficiency of logistics but also the balance of workload for each truck. Therefore, in this study, we propose a customer assignment and vehicle routing algorithm based on the saving method and the simulated annealing. The algorithm first determines the customer assignment and initial route for each truck based on the saving method to balance the workload consisting of the number of customers, the demand of the customers, and distance. Then the initial route is improved by applying the simulated annealing. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, we conducted computational experiments. In experiments, we solved the waste collection vehicle routing problem in a Japanese city where the wastes generated from over 1000 customers are collected by 10 trucks starting from 1 depot. We evaluated the total cost consisting of the number of waste collecting points, the amount of waste, and the distance for this case study.

The idea that large numbers of young people in sub-Saharan Africa are stuck in waithood – trapped between childhood and adulthood – dominates international development policy discourse. The belief is that because there are no jobs, young people cannot attain social markers of adulthood. Waithood has proved itself to be a very attractive way to frame debates and promote youth employment interventions. But research challenges two aspects of the waithood story: that young people are inactive; and that work is the only route into adulthood. Caution and nuance are required to prevent waithood becoming another catchy term that does little to improve policy.

This report provides an overview of the opportunity represented by the electrification of inland and coastal ferries in Latin America and the Caribbean. A review of electric ferry activity around the world and interviews with several project teams has been undertaken. In addition, a construction of an economic model the LATAM e-Ferry Model (LEFM) comparing the capital and operating costs of a typical mid-sized electric ferry to those of a conventional diesel-powered ferry was implemented. Finally, an assessment of five initial candidate routes for electrification and analysis of the electric ferry supply chain and identification of addressable market size in Latin America was determined.
