Abstract (sommario):
Undoubtedly, an important part of factors leading to an undesirable situation in contemporary Iranian architecture results from inadequate training of architecture. Which model should be adopted in architectural education? A model adopted from reductionist-based formal knowledge or a model that utilizes both formal knowledge and various economic, social, cultural, climatic aspects. The first option does not seem reasonable due to ample frustrations. So, top paradigm is an option able to change the theory and practice in architectural education by exploiting indigenous knowledge as well as formal training. The methodology of this study is analytic that seeks to explain and provide a top model in teaching architecture. The results suggest that indigenous knowledge of rural architecture is one of the basic requirements for achieving an effective approach to desirable development.

Abstract (sommario):
In the context of rural revitalization, the establishment of eco-architecture plays a crucial role in promoting the sustainable development of rural landscapes. Eco-architecture that encompasses aesthetic features serves as an ideal option for rural development. The Xijiang Qianhu Miaozhai stands as the largest Miao settlement in China. Its Diaojiao Building, situated on the mountain, seamlessly integrates ecological, aesthetic, and ethnic cultural elements. It exemplifies the successful merging of ecological architecture and landscape aesthetics. This paper thoroughly examines the Diaojiao Building from the standpoint of landscape aesthetics and ecological architecture. Extensive exploration is conducted to uncover the aesthetic characteristics and landscape value with this unique architectural style. Through comparisons with other prevalent architectural types, this research identifies the ecological architectural attributes specific to the timber-frame building. Ultimately, the study concludes by offering insights into the methodology of rural ecological architecture, grounded in the perspective of landscape aesthetics.

Abstract (sommario):
The transition from vernacular architectural patterns to current architecture in rural Iran has led to various socio-cultural and environmental problems in the last decade. This study explores the nature of this transition, which has been overlooked in the studies of vernacular architecture in Iran. Furthermore, this article contributes to the ongoing academic debate on the decline and transformation of vernacular architectural patterns in the context of modernization. It analyzes the forces behind the decline and rise of vernacular settlements in a case study area, the Salami region of the Khaf district in Iran’s Khorasan Razavi province, by exploring how it is possible to reinterpret vernacular architectural patterns in the context of current architecture to utilize the new developments in rural Iran not as an obstacle but as an opportunity for improvement. To this end, this article explores vernacular architectural patterns in a case study area in Iran, supported by socio-cultural aspects and the environmental conditions of the region. This study conducts architectural and anthropological fieldwork on three vernacular houses in a case study area and uses participant observation and informal interview methods to understand the people and their interaction with their built environment. The findings of this article thus contradict previous studies on learning from vernacular architecture by shedding light on vernacular architecture in Iran as a system by demonstrating the inextricable links between different vernacular architectural patterns. Therefore, this study argues that to draw lessons from vernacular architectural patterns for current architecture in rural Iran, it is necessary to limit its communication concerning people’s contemporary needs but not to neglect this communication completely.

Abstract (sommario):
Solar photovoltaic (PV) direct current (DC) microgrids have gained significant popularity during the last decade for low cost and sustainable rural electrification. Various system architectures have been practically deployed, however, their assessment concerning system sizing, losses, and operational efficiency is not readily available in the literature. Therefore, in this research work, a mathematical framework for the comparative analysis of various architectures of solar photovoltaic-based DC microgrids for rural applications is presented. The compared architectures mainly include (a) central generation and central storage architecture, (b) central generation and distributed storage architecture, (c) distributed generation and central storage architecture, and (d) distributed generation and distributed storage architecture. Each architecture is evaluated for losses, including distribution losses and power electronic conversion losses, for typical power delivery from source end to the load end in the custom village settings. Newton–Raphson method modified for DC power flow was used for distribution loss analysis, while power electronic converter loss modeling along with the Matlab curve-fitting tool was used for the evaluation of power electronic losses. Based upon the loss analysis, a framework for DC microgrid components (PV and battery) sizing was presented and also applied to the various architectures under consideration. The case study results show that distributed generation and distributed storage architecture with typical usage diversity of 40% is the most feasible architecture from both system sizing and operational cost perspectives and is 13% more efficient from central generation and central storage architecture for a typical village of 40 houses. The presented framework and the analysis results will be useful in selecting an optimal DC microgrid architecture for future rural electrification implementations.

Abstract (sommario):
Wooden architecture is a special, independent direction of The Russian traditional construction. Its unique quality and diversity are represented in Russia, which has always been a “forest, taiga” country. This truly is a national architecture, that had absorbed the mythopoetic and Christian worldview of the people. The history of Russian wooden architecture is largely the history of wooden architecture in the Russian North. The subject of this study is the peasant rural sacral objects: votive crosses of the Mezen`, one of the most severe regions of the Russian North. The author relies on several sources: field materials (architectural-ethnographic expeditions), with measurements, photographic recording, and the preparation of scientific passports. As well as work with informants: collecting local narratives and legends related to the history of specific crosses, the experience of practical museumification and setting up the votive cross and the village foundation pillar in the Mezen` sector of the Museum “Malye Korely”. The paper analyzes crosses as historical, ethnographic, stavrographic sources, works of wooden architecture and woodcarving, Pomors pilot signs. The aim of the study is to determine the meaning of the cross as one of the main symbols of the Orthodoxy in the cultural landscape of the Northern and Arctic territories.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The architecture built in Venice’s colony on Crete between its establishment in 1211 and the Ottoman conquest of the island in 1669 displays an intermingling of Western (Latin) architectural traditions with pre-Venetian Byzantine (Orthodox) forms and styles. Previous scholarship has explored the urban architecture of Venetian Crete, but less attention has been granted to the many rural Orthodox churches of the later medieval period that dot the Cretan countryside. While the official monuments of Cretan cities have been interpreted as employing architectural forms with a strong ideological—especially political—intent, the use of forms in rural buildings was not as ideologically charged. These more modest structures employed “Western” and “Byzantine” architectural styles in an ideologically neutral manner that reflected trends in fashion or taste rather than distinctions of cultural or political identity. By the fourteenth century, “Latin” and “Orthodox” architectural traditions had merged into a local style that expressed the cosmopolitan character of medieval Crete.

Abstract (sommario):
The architect in Sweden has a weaker role than ever, participating in a dysfunctional building industry that is not capable of providing the high quality and progressive built environment that we need. There is a need for critical examination to find what could make the role more relevant today. This thesis is in search of that role and how it could contribute to society. To explore this I shall focus on rural Norrland, in particular how architecture can be used to strengthen these areas by implementing strategies that increase self-sufficiency and governance. This research is carried out through four live, collaborative case studies with two communities in rural locations. The first two being set on Holmön exploring permit-free buildings as a means to grow and challenge the municipality as well as a collective project creating benches. The third is exploring how a private project can develop and contribute to the local area through retaining local knowledge. The fourth and most extensive is the creation of a co-funded, community run apartment and community building in Klimpfjäll. Through the reflection on the progress of these projects a methodology of working is discussed to outline a way of working that could impact the building industry, expand the role of the architect and positively impact the rural areas to ultimately create a more socially and environmentally sustainable society.

Abstract (sommario):
With the rapid progress of urbanization in China, a lot of villages face serious brain-drain. A serious problem of culture deterioration arises except in a few traditional villages. Most newly built rural homes are weak and unsafe due to a lack of professional support and building codes. Many large-scale rural reconstruction projects initiated by the government fail because of corruption and irresponsibility. The rural residents suffer from the lack of infrastructure and the quality of their homes. Presently, there are a few grassroots, activists, architects, architectural critics, media and NGOs working for the renovation of Chinese vernacular architecture and rural settlement. Their works include architectural writing, installation artworks and projects in rural areas. This paper is an attempt to propose sustainable approaches and alternative patterns to settle grounds for Chinese contemporary rural construction, regarding architecture, decorative arts, construction systems and user's organization for promotion, by investigating, analyzing and comparing theories and some represented samples of traditional villages, renovation projects and installation artworks from the standpoints of technology, sociology, politics, art, philosophy, history and sustainability.

Abstract (sommario):

Within a place, there is a fluidity of demographic, a collision and interaction between identities that requires negotiation, both spatially and socially. This project aims to assemble a series of actions toward the design of a space to negotiate that realm of personal and social adaptation within the urban environment that comes with the relocation of self through immigration, or the disruption of a home by the presence of foreignness. The contemporary rural community must negotiate these conditions in a new way, as it is being affected by social changes that, unlike the urban context, it does not have the infrastructure to support. The architect enters the project as an active observer, her actions of interpretive investigation assembling a set of components of design gathered through strangers and locals that represent the identity of the site. These components will be used to design a public architecture that serves as the container of memory and generator of exchange, mediating between the physical landscape and the constructed landscape of the assembled personal identity of individuals. The project will serve as a vehicle to understand and assemble a rural public space that is inclusive of memory and provides agency for progress. As cultural groups are transferred through contexts, the constructed landscapes of identity and the physical landscapes are altered and derived by the juxtaposition of the two, forming a dynamic relationship that is simultaneously individual and multiple. This reciprocity is especially evident in the selected context of Arcadia, Florida where cultural identity is altered through a particular event, such as a drastic physical alteration (hurricane), instigating mutation in one or both landscapes, forcing a restructuring of the whole and an acknowledgment of not only absence of the lost, but also presence of the new identities.

Neokorides, Peter Alexander. "Thinking through making : the rural building workshop". Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/19080.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is about the link between thinking and making, and how designing and physically building or prototyping what is designed (or parts there of) aids in the generation of ideas, and has a potential for architectural education. The ideas that have transpired through the course of the year from building models and doing research for my theory and technology papers has led me in the direction of developing components and techniques for construction made from easily sourced tools and materials - ones from local industry and the landscape - that give rise to a tectonic expression as well as allows for an adaptable type of architecture. The methodology informing the design has therefore developed from the bottom up through the use of these components, as well as from the top down by means of a structural concept. The first part of the paper looks at the theory of making which deals with aspects of making in current society that I find relevant to this thesis. Part two and three of this paper is comprised of reciprocal components. Part two deals with the theory of structure and how my findings have helped guide the process of making, and have led to an appropriate structural system for my concept of a 'growing' or adaptable building. The third part of this paper describes the models I have built this year to illustrate the concept of 'techne', or the process of creation that is guided by the thing made, in order to demonstrate the qualities that materials possess, as well as how the act of making can be a design generator. It also describes how the initial stage of building models has led to the exploration of structural systems and components, and how models relating to the programme and site have been able to start informing the form of a building. The fourth and final part of this paper looks at the programme, site, and materiality of the 'Rural Building Workshop'.

Timberland has become a new and emerging asset class among investors. Institutional investors have committed large amounts of capital through the private equity market. Timber real estate investment trusts (REITs) have also allowed smaller individual investors to participate in the ownership in timberland. Given that land supply is fixed, the demand for land is expected to increase as baby boomers near retirement. Owners of timberland are faced with making strategic decisions as to whether timberland remains the highest and best use. Given these facts, this thesis examines over 300 predominately rural counties where timberland is harvested and attempts to create a model to identify where land has the highest value as an urban use, and secondly, where this urban land value is expected to experience the most appreciation. Using house prices as a proxy for land value, models for both house price and house price appreciation were developed. The results indicated that two variables were significant factors in forecasting appreciation: 1) the percentage of developed land within a county and 2) the percentage of seasonal units. As a result, urban counties with a lower percentage of seasonal units appreciated less, whereas rural counties with a higher percentage of seasonal units appreciated more. The results are significant in that it shows how there is an option growth effect for rural land beyond the urban edge which can potentially yield higher appreciation rates for speculative landowners.

Cities in China have a longstanding reputation of monotonous and hegemonic speculative urbanization. In the recent decade, real estate development transformed a large amount of arable land into urban periphery. This lead to the gross amount of farmland in China to reach near security levels for national reservation. Since then, the existing mode of land finance in cities can hardly maintain the speed of rapid economic development. In 2006, the central government of China reoriented investment by shifting the priority in infrastructure investment to the countryside. Many villages are rich in natural and historical resources, as well as sources of a large amount of potential labor supply and consumption demand. Therefore, the complementary development between rural and urban construction will trigger the next wave of national economic growth in China. The binary structures of rural and urban development have sustained since the establishment of hukou system in 1958. This mode of segmentation channeled rural wealth to cities. Recently, the land quota bidding system between cities and villages triggered the combination of fragmented villages into towns. However, similar to urban development, many new towns were established with monotonous and tedious settings by utilitarian developers using similar design methodologies with the mode of urban development. The existing movement of townization segregated the original modes of rural life. The thesis aims to establish a language tailored for rural design in China by constructing a multimodal town through endogenous development. Different from city planning, village planning considers dynamic movement processes, small scale property rights, and complex environmental contexts. Different layouts of farmstead, field and infrastructure are always a compromise on either the efficiency of production or efficiency of infrastructure. The fundamental questions are how to integrate the population, how to obtain the investment for construction, and how to eliminate the binary structure of architecture and landscape in a rural environment.

Abstract (sommario):
The research of traditional vernacular architecture in rural areas is of great importance for the preservation of architectural and cultural heritage, as well as for the preservation of the identity of rural landscapes, ecosystems and natural resources. We are witnessing the unsustainable development of rural areas and the destruction of their identity by modern architectural interventions, that are not suitable for the rural environment, due to ignorance of the values and principles of traditional vernacular architecture and architectural heritage. Focusing on the example of traditional houses of Stara Planina Mountain, this paper investigates the bioclimatic principles and sustainable design strategies of traditional vernacular architecture of Stara Planina Mountain on the example of the village of Senokos, with an emphasis on their valorization and recognition of potential for application in a contemporary architectural context.

Abstract (sommario):
The architecture of rural buildings, including various types of country houses, is defined by spaces with specific functions such as facilities for keeping animals, auxiliary spaces, and food storage facilities. This paper explores the potential of transforming auxiliary agricultural buildings into sustainable living spaces by applying principles of vernacular architecture and bioclimatization. Existing and applied materials, forms, spatial arrangements, as well as harmony and comfort in integrating traditional and contemporary architectural elements into architectural solutions, are analyzed. The focus of this work is on identifying the potential and possible directions for the revitalization of auxiliary facilities in rural households by the principles of sustainable development and the approximation of vernacular architecture, thus creating a new unique architectural expression.

Abstract (sommario):
The paper proposes a reading of the rural architectures of the northern Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, where structures linked to the agricultural activities and residential buildings coexist side by side. Knowledge about local constructive culture and the conservation of rural emergencies allows to highlight variations of base principles of Mediterranean architecture, in which specific typologies are created spontaneously as a solution to constructive problems and in which anthropic and geomorphologic values are entwined creating deep relationships with the environment and the identity of local communities. The paper analyses the residential types that, through the variety of architectural responses, reveal a sensitivity that can be reconnected to an attitude common to the entire geographical area, related to the place, to its morphological and environmental characters, produced by plans based on rational and geometric principles. All this finds validation in a landscape designed by almost spontaneous buildings that are placed in a scattered but rational way among the territory. Therefore, the paper proposes the understanding of rural architectures, nowadays often abandoned, that can give birth to actions of recovery and to the conservation of ancient knowledge.

Abstract (sommario):
Many regions in Poland are said to be a unique example of preservation of cultural heritage. These include many examples of Pomorskie, Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Wielkopolskie and Dolnoslaskie voivodships. These regions are known to preserve the traditional way of life and customs as well as the architecture, especially the sacral architecture. It is also much easier to build mutual trust and social capital in them, because people from those regions can always refer to the universal values of their ancestors. However, there are also regions which, under the influence of migration and post-displacement processes after World War II, have lost their cultural and social character. Economic emigrants and displaced people from the Eastern Borderlands and Central Poland shared poverty and desire to settle. Will they succeed, and is there a chance to recreate and build a new identity? Those are the questions we are trying to answer, and the following article presents some of the results. By moving the border of autobiographical and ethnographic methods, authors adopt an autoethnographic method (narrative interviews, participant observation, biographical methods), which means turning to narratives as a way of research and as an expression of the search for a different relationship between the researcher and the subject and between the author and the reader. The researchers use their own experiences as a source of description of the culture in which they participate and examine. As a result, the text is a story created by the local community and researchers, aimed at reproducing and creating identity in the post-immigrant rural communities based on experienced and historical memory. The research was conducted in the years 2016-2017 in the above mentioned voivodships.

Abstract (sommario):
The traditional rural settlements of Sredačka župa are the result of the creativity of recent centuries and are an integral part of Serbian national culture. Their preservation should not be reduced only to the level of preservation of folk architecture as museum monuments, but they should be integral parts of living elements of modern life and tourist offer. In this direction and with a focus on the regional development of the Šarplanina entity, this potential of rural settlements, expressed through their architecture and natural resources, must be included in programs for the use of traditional settlements in the function of the development of high mountain tourism, with the use of specific modalities that will include and valorize its specific geostrategic position and its environmental and energy self-sustainability. The valorization program should revive and develop some of the typical rural settlements by preserving, restoring and restoring traditional architectural buildings and make them economically independent and strong by using the energy potential that this area possesses.
