Abstract (sommario):
Undoubtedly, an important part of factors leading to an undesirable situation in contemporary Iranian architecture results from inadequate training of architecture. Which model should be adopted in architectural education? A model adopted from reductionist-based formal knowledge or a model that utilizes both formal knowledge and various economic, social, cultural, climatic aspects. The first option does not seem reasonable due to ample frustrations. So, top paradigm is an option able to change the theory and practice in architectural education by exploiting indigenous knowledge as well as formal training. The methodology of this study is analytic that seeks to explain and provide a top model in teaching architecture. The results suggest that indigenous knowledge of rural architecture is one of the basic requirements for achieving an effective approach to desirable development.

Abstract (sommario):
The transition from vernacular architectural patterns to current architecture in rural Iran has led to various socio-cultural and environmental problems in the last decade. This study explores the nature of this transition, which has been overlooked in the studies of vernacular architecture in Iran. Furthermore, this article contributes to the ongoing academic debate on the decline and transformation of vernacular architectural patterns in the context of modernization. It analyzes the forces behind the decline and rise of vernacular settlements in a case study area, the Salami region of the Khaf district in Iran’s Khorasan Razavi province, by exploring how it is possible to reinterpret vernacular architectural patterns in the context of current architecture to utilize the new developments in rural Iran not as an obstacle but as an opportunity for improvement. To this end, this article explores vernacular architectural patterns in a case study area in Iran, supported by socio-cultural aspects and the environmental conditions of the region. This study conducts architectural and anthropological fieldwork on three vernacular houses in a case study area and uses participant observation and informal interview methods to understand the people and their interaction with their built environment. The findings of this article thus contradict previous studies on learning from vernacular architecture by shedding light on vernacular architecture in Iran as a system by demonstrating the inextricable links between different vernacular architectural patterns. Therefore, this study argues that to draw lessons from vernacular architectural patterns for current architecture in rural Iran, it is necessary to limit its communication concerning people’s contemporary needs but not to neglect this communication completely.

Abstract (sommario):
Solar photovoltaic (PV) direct current (DC) microgrids have gained significant popularity during the last decade for low cost and sustainable rural electrification. Various system architectures have been practically deployed, however, their assessment concerning system sizing, losses, and operational efficiency is not readily available in the literature. Therefore, in this research work, a mathematical framework for the comparative analysis of various architectures of solar photovoltaic-based DC microgrids for rural applications is presented. The compared architectures mainly include (a) central generation and central storage architecture, (b) central generation and distributed storage architecture, (c) distributed generation and central storage architecture, and (d) distributed generation and distributed storage architecture. Each architecture is evaluated for losses, including distribution losses and power electronic conversion losses, for typical power delivery from source end to the load end in the custom village settings. Newton–Raphson method modified for DC power flow was used for distribution loss analysis, while power electronic converter loss modeling along with the Matlab curve-fitting tool was used for the evaluation of power electronic losses. Based upon the loss analysis, a framework for DC microgrid components (PV and battery) sizing was presented and also applied to the various architectures under consideration. The case study results show that distributed generation and distributed storage architecture with typical usage diversity of 40% is the most feasible architecture from both system sizing and operational cost perspectives and is 13% more efficient from central generation and central storage architecture for a typical village of 40 houses. The presented framework and the analysis results will be useful in selecting an optimal DC microgrid architecture for future rural electrification implementations.

Wooden architecture is a special, independent direction of The Russian traditional construction. Its unique quality and diversity are represented in Russia, which has always been a “forest, taiga” country. This truly is a national architecture, that had absorbed the mythopoetic and Christian worldview of the people. The history of Russian wooden architecture is largely the history of wooden architecture in the Russian North. The subject of this study is the peasant rural sacral objects: votive crosses of the Mezen`, one of the most severe regions of the Russian North. The author relies on several sources: field materials (architectural-ethnographic expeditions), with measurements, photographic recording, and the preparation of scientific passports. As well as work with informants: collecting local narratives and legends related to the history of specific crosses, the experience of practical museumification and setting up the votive cross and the village foundation pillar in the Mezen` sector of the Museum “Malye Korely”. The paper analyzes crosses as historical, ethnographic, stavrographic sources, works of wooden architecture and woodcarving, Pomors pilot signs. The aim of the study is to determine the meaning of the cross as one of the main symbols of the Orthodoxy in the cultural landscape of the Northern and Arctic territories.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract The architecture built in Venice’s colony on Crete between its establishment in 1211 and the Ottoman conquest of the island in 1669 displays an intermingling of Western (Latin) architectural traditions with pre-Venetian Byzantine (Orthodox) forms and styles. Previous scholarship has explored the urban architecture of Venetian Crete, but less attention has been granted to the many rural Orthodox churches of the later medieval period that dot the Cretan countryside. While the official monuments of Cretan cities have been interpreted as employing architectural forms with a strong ideological—especially political—intent, the use of forms in rural buildings was not as ideologically charged. These more modest structures employed “Western” and “Byzantine” architectural styles in an ideologically neutral manner that reflected trends in fashion or taste rather than distinctions of cultural or political identity. By the fourteenth century, “Latin” and “Orthodox” architectural traditions had merged into a local style that expressed the cosmopolitan character of medieval Crete.

Abstract (sommario):
This paper attempts to explore the social production of architecture in contemporary Chinese rural villages through a case study on the Community Centre in Xihe Village. This community project, designed and built in 2014, exemplifies a lesser-known type of Chinese architectural practice engaging in a local and specific context, which suddenly gave participation a dramatic image in current breakneck Chinese rural-urban transition of large scale and rapid speed. By looking at this highly specific case through a detailed description and critical evaluation, this paper takes this participatory architectural project as the very first critical example of the socially-engaged architecture in China; as presenting an alternative architecture of resistance in response to the top-down guiding principle ‘Construction of A New Socialist Countryside’ launched by the government in 2005. Source material was collected through fieldwork in the village, including observational study, photographic documentation, and intensive formal and informal interviews with practitioners, authorities, and villagers. The analysis emphasizes the social process and consequences of different stages of this building, in order to explore hidden potentials and methodologies tailoring the architectural design and construction to the site-specificity. The social consequence of the building process is much more important than the object produced. By investigating the architectural version within a broader framework combining anthropology and activism, the paper attempts to introduce a more socially resilient way of making architecture in the current Chinese rural-urban transition. On the one hand it addresses the contingencies in working with underprivileged village communities in inner rural China, which have scarce resources and fragile identities; on the other hand it cuts through the surface of rural vernacular China to expose the undercurrent of silent issues in architecture that constitute the indigenous, the everyday, resistance, transition, and resilience.

Abstract (sommario):
Pedagogies of building systems in architectural education are traditionally framed as the technical knowledge guiding construction, material applications, structures, and mechanical building services. This paper provides a framework and a case study for centering inclusive and universal design principles in the teaching of building systems with a focus on designing public spaces for rural and aging populations. It proposes methods for integrating design accountability, sustainable environmental practices, and cultural contexts into architectural design and education.Public spaces, services, and resources are spread thinly outside of cities and denser communities, creating barriers to access for aging populations among others. This pedagogical framework for inclusive rural architecture focuses on post offices as one of the few public institutions in rural communities and a vital conduit to essential services (particularly during health crises). In the speculative space of architecture curriculum, students conceived of additional services and programs to rethink the role of post offices in communities. These programs targeted accessibility barriers by providing digital resource centers, transportation hubs, and community gathering spaces. The flexibility, adaptability, and comfort at the core of universal design principles provide a lens for understanding sustainable environmental techniques. Adaptable buildings constructed with replaceable and reusable parts allow for repair and resiliency over time. Material and structural systems designed for intuitive use and presentation of information promote accessible communication. Passive systems design enables comfort in dialog with the environment and a reduction in required energy. However as passive systems often require building operability, inclusive design principles call for building systems to be operable by diverse users. Post office projects in this case study integrated universal design principles to achieve energy efficient buildings that respond to changing climates and rural cultural contexts.Replacing minimum standards for accessibility within curricula with inclusive design criteria is also enacted through methodologies. While educational institutions are clustered in urban areas, many students come from or have ties to rural communities. The focus on rural public spaces and aging populations is a means for students to bring their own diverse backgrounds, places of origin, and histories into their academic studies. In combining methods of engaged research with a universal design-focused pedagogy for building systems, students expand technical knowledge of architectural design with the objective of creating equitable and inclusive public spaces. Abstract (sommario):
The paper examines the work of Aleksandar Deroko at the University of Belgrade's Faculty of Architecture and the inclusion of his rich personal knowledge about the vernacular architecture in the study programme, which he gained from long-term field research. As an assistant professor, he introduced the interpretation of vernacular architecture in the course on Byzantine and Old Serbian Architecture in 1929. After the study programme reform in 1935, a new course - named Old Serbian Architecture - was established, with one semester dedicated to the medieval monumental architecture and the second to rural and urban houses. In 1945/46 academic year, the course was renamed Vernacular Architecture and it incorporated medieval and vernacular architecture of the former Yugoslavia. Practical assignments dealt more with vernacular architecture and, through them the student's discovered the fundamental principles and methods of the vernacular construction. The goal of the studies was for students to comprehend and adopt basic traditional canons of construction and apply them to their own projects of cooperative centers, countryside schools, monasteries, etc. Through illustrations the paper will present, till now unpublished, student projects from the archives of Belgrade's the Faculty of Architecture's office for the architectural heritage of Serbia.

Abstract (sommario):
As a significant component of rural settlements, residential architecture is a record of historical changes containing considerable research value. In the study of residential architectural continuity, the focus is on the inheritance and innovation of traditional residential architectural “genes” in contemporary new residential buildings. Based on a systematic review of the literature, the purpose of this study is to analyze the research trends, categories, and variables relating to architectural continuity in residential buildings, and to build a systematic and comprehensive framework for assessing the architectural continuity of residential buildings in rural settlements based on prior research. This study provides guidance and references for evaluating the design of new residential buildings in rural settlements and for formulating regional planning principles. Using the PRISMA guidelines as the basis for the review method, we filtered the literature from three databases: Web of Science (WoS), Scopus, and EI, and studied the 40 articles selected at the end. As can be seen from the results, the literature on architectural continuity in rural settlements has focused more on functional and typological levels and less on the archetypal level of architectural continuity (user behavior). Still, the archetypal level is the most important, because the behavior of housing users directly influences the degree to which housing is continuous in terms of its function and type. The most important finding of this review is that the resident behavior of housing users has a significant influence on the assessment of the continuity of housing architecture, and thus, the continuity of housing architecture in rural settlements must be assessed in conjunction with user behavior.

Abstract (sommario):
In an agricultural nation like Indonesia, where villages are one of the key regions for economic growth, Jatisura Village in the Cikedung district of Indramayu has the potential to grow into a smart village. This is because Rosalia Food MSMEs (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) that have sold their products to the Asian level and reputable communities like Situ Bolang as a tourist attraction both have potential in Jatisura village. Realizing smart village development is a program that requires cooperation from all parties since it is in line with the government's priority program, which is to construct Indonesia from the periphery to minimize the inequity between cities and rural areas. Therefore, a model of architecture that aligns with information technology architecture is required to implement the construction of smart villages. This study intended to build an architecture that aligns with information technology to facilitate the implementation of smart villages based on information and communication technology in Jatisura village, Indonesia's Indramayu regency. To promote digital inclusion and more excellent employment prospects, this study focuses on smart village architecture and methods leveraging ICT initiatives. The TOGAF framework was the foundation architectural concept used. The framework generated business and organizational architecture models, information system and technological architectures, and migration, implementation, and change management architectures. All these architectural models help carry out the process of constructing a smart village, enabling it to do so in a way that effectively carries out the vision and mission of the regency.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose Whilst resilience has been a critical academic topic and worldwide issue for many decades, not all territories have been equally investigated. In addition, the role of architecture in contributing to community resilience against climate change has been overlooked. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to shed light on what is the current state of the art of community resilience in rural towns and what type of architectural strategies has been recognised for facilitating resilience. Design/methodology/approach The study has combined literature review and architectural project review. Findings There are four major findings to this research that could impact policy making and decision making if implemented at different institutional levels. First, there is an evident increased academic interest on this topic. Second, there is a need for a greater consultation among the different stakeholders that participate in the planning and implementation of the future-focused adaptation strategies. Third, the potential for the architectural discipline to play an active role in facilitating and ameliorating community resilience has been identified. Fourth, there is a need to integrate placed-based and identity-related factors/components into a community’s framework for resilience amelioration. Research limitations/implications One limitation is the fact that the literature review investigated only English literature. Also, the review relied mostly on online findings and, for the good-practice review, did not take into consideration direct local knowledge, which would have required travelling the globe and all of Australia in order to collect feedback. Thus, some projects and literature might have been missed. Originality/value The value of this research is to compare findings from literature review (scholar activities) and best practices (architectural activities). In combining the two aspects, it merges a gap in research.

Abstract (sommario):
Traditional architectural forms and structures develop under the influence of such physical and non-physical determinants as climate, topography structure, socio-cultural values, economy and technology, and are based on centuries of accumulated knowledge. This study is an analysis of the rural Yayla settlements of four towns in the province of Antalya, located on Turkey’s Mediterranean coast. The southern inclines of the Taurus Mountain range facing the Mediterranean, are host to number of rural settlements at different altitudes that bear some region-specific architectural features. This study aims to understand settlement pattern and house design features that have developed under the specific climate, socio-cultural and socio-economic conditions of the traditional households in rural yaylas in the different bio-climatic zones of the region. The study has revealed that designs have developed over time to result in spaces that are comfortable and climate sensitive, and which attribute importance to the local resources, economy and culture; and that the housing designs have developed offer natural means of heat control and ventilation. The new understanding offered in this paper may contribute to the conservation of the local cultural features of the area, allowing their sustainable perpetuation into the future and serving as examples of good design practise for future settlements

Abstract (sommario):
In Romania, rural communities grapple with decades of depopulation and economic decline, endangering the natural and cultural richness of their landscapes. The implementation of Romania’s 2030 sustainable development plan presents an opportunity to reverse these trends by merging economic and community development with cultural preservation. This paper examines the potential for creating new livelihood opportunities through a program that integrates sustainable agrotourism with culturally appropriate vernacular architecture in Romania’s distinct rural regions. Focusing on two such regions characterized by significant rural population decline yet endowed with ecological services capable of supporting a diverse rural economy, we collaborated with an architect and landscape engineer to devise three specific and detailed agritourist housing scenarios. These scenarios draw upon local architectural forms harmonious with the vernacular landscape, providing accommodations for agrotourism guests and facilitating craft workshops for visitors interested in rural crafts and traditions. We evaluated the cultural appropriateness of the architectural designs through a social survey and assessed the broader social utility of the development plan via an expansive cost–benefit analysis, treating the project’s sustainability features as quasi-public goods. Such interdisciplinary endeavours are essential for effectively bridging conceptually driven social analysis with pragmatic design and planning strategies, essential for achieving sustainable futures for rural communities and landscapes, as exemplified by rural Romania.

In the context of high-quality development of rural tourism, the design of rural landscape is of great significance for inheriting regional culture and protecting local ecology. From the perspective of the planning and design of rural tourism, the authors divide the elements of rural landscape into four aspects: “original” rural environment, “original” rural architecture, “original” production and life, and “original” folk customs. Based on that, the authors then propose to boost the protection and creation of rural landscape from four aspects which are: continuation of the traditions and architectural styles of western Sichuan, protection of rural natural ecology, inheritance of regional traditional culture, and implementation of the strategy of “cultural innovation + rural tourism”, so as to realize the sustainable development of rural landscape.

Abstract (sommario):
Harry Courtney Archer's (1918-2002) article on architecture in New Zealand published in The Architectural Review in 1942 is recognised as part of the rich collection of publications that shaped the discourse about Modern architecture in this country (Clark & Walker 2000). On the face of it, Archer was an unlikely contributor to the discussion on New Zealand's architecture and proselytiser for Modernism: he had lived most of his 23 years to date in small rural towns, before the war, working in his father's flour mill in Rangiora and during the war moving between pacifist rural communities in the South Island. In this paper, I consider Archer's 1942 article, his sole contribution to architectural discourse, in relation to his personal background, asking where and how Archer formed his views and how he came to expound them in the journal the New Zealand architects of his generation acknowledged as "the bible" of contemporary architectural thought. I also analyse his article beyond its brief figuration of the New Zealand timber tradition as "frank" and therefore a source for the local manifestation of Modern architecture, by reflecting on his writing in light of his personal experiences, his avant-garde friends and his commitment to socialist movements.

Abstract (sommario):
This investigation highlights a new conception of design space in architecture, in the relationship between settlement and land, rooted in architectural historical studies and research on rural and agrarian economy and unlocks a potential regeneration and restoration of the rural villages of Italy’s cultural heritage. In Italy, the theme of rural architecture has gained momentum ever since the spread of the Modern Movement, reviving settlement and spatial principles as a moral lesson for the general development of new aesthetics and a new society. Innovative concepts inspired by Arrigo Serpieri such as “Integral Land Reclamation”, and long-standing institutions such as the Land Reclamation Consortia, became official law in 1933, and played a crucialrole in this process, particularly in consolidating new architectural thinking that was to endure up to post-war reconstruction and beyond, until our own times. Paradoxically, ideologically opposing phenomena, settlements related to the extensive land reclamation of the Fascist period and the rural redevelopment of the Fifties, were somehow based on comparable theoretical and operational aspects. We can recognize these ideas by looking at the most interesting experiments developed in these two periods: the city of Sabaudia designed by Piccinato, and the village of La Martella at Matera designed by Quaroni (and sponsored by Adriano Olivetti). The quest for a new “moral aesthetic” of architecture undertaken by leading representatives of Italian Rationalism was to re-emerge in the neorealism of post-war reconstruction.

After almost a century of investigation on the architectural value of rural buildings in all its connections with landscape, the recovery approach has not overcome the phase of ethic imperative. The effective possibilities to rehabilitation existing structures are left to the project that, through its interdisciplinarity, should specify the modalities, from the technical point of view as well as from the environmental, social, and economic advantages one. This paper aims to re-inhabit the rural buildings closer to urban centers. The methodological approach is based on a bioclimatic project integrated with green building, which had been tested in a rural house of the seventeenth century: Masseria Nicotera to Marigliano, in the province of Naples. Indeed, the bioclimatic matrix of rural architecture has been recovered and reintroduced, after being improved by the passive system and integrated by natural material. The project has been supported also by the assessment of the economic benefit and the estimation contributions that are not good for themselves but constitutes the beginning of a database available at the national level for the recovery of rural architecture.

Abstract (sommario):
The huge layer of unrevealed cultural heritage in the Tyumen region is considered. Tyumen region hosts about two thousand monuments of history and culture, included in the united federal register, and about 1300 more identified objects of cultural heritage. However, the identification of historical and cultural monuments is far from complete. Detailed field expeditionary studies, conducted in all districts of the region during 2017–2020, made it possible to identify about a thousand more historical monuments with signs of cultural heritage.Examples of objects of traditional rural wooden architecture (both residential estates and outbuildings), decoration of rural wooden houses, stone construction in the village (retail shops, residential merchant houses) are given. The preserved historical layout of rural settlements has been regarded as a special kind of heritage objects. Examples of industrial architecture in rural settlements, architecture of railway stations and station complexes are shown. Several dozens of rural settlements can be distinguished on the territory of the region, where, according to official figures, there are either no cultural heritage objects at all, or there are 1–2 objects, but in fact there are up to 15–20 interesting architectural structures, the historical layout and cultural landscape are preserved. These settlements may become real reference points of the future cultural framework of the region, a good basis for attracting tourists and excursionists.

Abstract (sommario):
Working with objects in digital spatial form is gradually becoming a standard in many fields. In addition to the advantage of easier object manipulation, digital representation can also be used for presentation purposes or better cataloging. In the case of objects from museum collections, it can serve as a basis for restoration or for conducting deeper research into detailed structures. The method of photogrammetry allows 3D modelling of real objects without physical contact with them, while at the same time making use of affordable equipment. However, the disadvantage of this method is the size of the output data (even hundreds of megabytes), which can be a barrier to easy web sharing. This paper presents an efficient workflow for the 3D digitization of smaller physical objects and the subsequent process of generalizing the resulting triangular model to reduce the data volume. Finally, the model generalization is utilized when publishing the model in a web environment to make it available to the widest possible range of users. The whole procedure is applied to a physical model of a cottage from the village of Orlová (Karviná district, Czechia) from the collection of the Czech National Museum (scale reduction of a vernacular building at a scale of approximately 1:20).

Abstract (sommario):
With the rapid development of globalization, industrialization, urbanization, and informatization, numerous economic activities are aggregated in cities, resulting in uneven resources distribution between urban and rural areas. Additionally, the falling fertility rate has led to the existence of many abandoned education-related architectures in both areas. When an architectural space is non-operational, it delivers neither the fundamental spatial value nor contributes any interaction to its neighbors. This research conducts two educational architecture analyses with respect to their redesign programs in order to evaluate the relation between space and local community. Also, the spatial hierarchy, scale, and characteristics of locality are further investigated in the hope of gaining a deeper understanding of how different revitalization approaches might lead to diverse interaction patterns in the areas. This study shows that different spatial characteristics can affect how people perceive the public space and the way they interact with it. In addition, an effective redesign progress should enhance both space utilization and human-environmental interactions since it can not only promote regional development but also the overall environment sustainability. Thus, an abandoned architecture can be a potential element to invigorate the local community either economically or emotionally.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. According to the United Nations (UN) Africa accounts for only 13% of the world's urban population and less than half of the inhabitants of this continent (43%) live in urban areas (Xinhua News Agency, 2017). Therefore, the cultural importance of rural architecture in this context is remarkable both locally for each society and generally for human knowledge. As Paul Oliver pointed out, vernacular architecture is the architectural language of people with their ethnic, regional and local dialects (Oliver, 1997), and it should be considered a treasure containing the knowledge, development and progress of a civilization. The formal and material results of this development lead to the reopening of the debate on its sustainability and its effects on human behaviour. The structural changes of rural habitats are putting the preservation of their cultural heritage at serious risk. The current demand for habitability fosters the use of imported materials such as cement and sheet metal to replace earthen walls and straw roofing in the simple constructions, solutions that deceptively improve the comfort of the inhabited spaces. The present article analyses residential construction typologies of traditional rural settlements of Togo, where the constructive, formal and technical variety is replaced by general solutions that, without achieving the desired housing improvement, are nonetheless contributing to the social detachment from traditions that represent the cultural identity of each community. The methodology aims at the identification and characterization of traditional residential typologies, and a final consideration evaluates the balance between sustainable development and the conservation of cultural values in rural settlements.

Abstract (sommario):
The article examines the problems of preserving and reviving historical and national traditions in the architecture of the rural dwelling of ethnic groups of the Russian-Kazakh border. The relevance of the study is due to the world processes of globalization, the growth of the population of cities and the gradual loss of unique objects of material culture in rural areas. The purpose of the study is to identify the space-planning, architectural and artistic features of rural dwellings of the Russian, Kazakh, Tatar and Bashkir peoples of the Russian-Kazakhstan borderland. The following methods were applied in scientific work: full-scale observations of existing buildings and structures on the studied territory, study of the natural climatic and landscape characteristics of the area, a comparative analysis of the established types of housing of ethnic groups. Within the framework of the study, architectural and artistic solutions of facades of traditional dwellings of different peoples, the peculiarities of the organization of interior spaces, their compositional and coloristic solution were considered and the relationship of historically established techniques with modern methods of building residential buildings of the rural population of the region was traced. As a result of the study, it was concluded that there is a partial loss of identity, smoothing out national features in the volumetric-planning and architectural-artistic solution of the dwelling of ethnic groups in the studied territory. At the same time, the preservation and revival of national features will help not only enrich the architecture of rural dwelling, but will also contribute to increasing tourist interest and the development of ethnocultural tourism in the Russian-Kazakh borderland.

Abstract (sommario):
The recent advancements and introduction of computer technology in the rural areas of countries like India have narrowed down the digital divide between urban and rural immensely. The rural sector has been important for the society as it has always been the primary reason for growth and development of the civilizations to sustain and achieve human goals for better existence. The modern computing systems comprise of numerous elements involving technicians, networks, and hardware. Electricity has been one of the major prerequisites for powering these systems. Due to the limitation of this and other such resources in the rural areas, with the rising costs of energy and increased concerns of environmental impacts of energy generation and consumption, there has been an immediate need for research and development in the solutions for low power wastage and low power consuming green systems and strategies. Major studies have shown that the main advantage of implementation of green computing would be to prolong the respective equipment’s lifespan, further reducing the ecological footprint and facilitating sustainable development. In this paper, we analyze and explore the more energy efficient (green) systems that consume relatively less power, such as solid-state hard disk drives, ethernet wired connection, and virtualization of machine resources for the computing and implementation in rural areas.

Abstract (sommario):
Traditional rural living environments have the potential to be instructive in numerous ways. Rural settlements, which are often created with a minimum of effort and have been around for thousands of years, can be a template for living environments of tomorrow. Starting off with that proposition, this paper goes on to emphasize the importance of examining the characteristics of traditional rural settlements in the context of sustainability. The article aims to analyze and thus improve our understanding of rural settlements, and in the process of doing so, it produces and reproduces knowledge within the field of sustainability. A model consisting of multiple layers was applied through the sampling of a particular rural-traditional settlement (Taraklı), thereby shedding light on the relationship between the settlement and the parameters of environmental sustainability. In that model, three main methods of learning from traditional architecture were proposed: (1) Learning From Vernacular Architecture (LF-VA) through existing settlements; (2) Learning From Experience (LF-E) through those who have learned from vernacular approaches; and, (3) Learning from Research (LF-R). Through the use of that model, the data obtained constitutes a holistic pool of information. The basic facts articulated in this pool are models, concepts and theories, and the prominent concepts include documentation, conservation, adaptation and innovation. As a result of the analysis based on the model, the relationship of the physical characteristics of the rural-traditional settlement exemplified in the article with the environmental sustainability parameters has been illustrated systematically. In the literature, the products of rural architecture generally exist with identification and documentation studies. In this article, the relationship between rural architecture and sustainability is discussed in the context of learning from the past and it is shown through an existing settlement.
