To help address this problem, the city of San Francisco created a healthy food retailer incentive program. Its success depends, in part, on retailers’ willingness to participate. Through in-person interviews, we explored attitudes toward the program among store owners or managers of 17 nonparticipating stores. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Introduction A minority of women with breast cancer in Mexico are diagnosed through a screening program with a low rate of national coverage of about 20%, which translates into late diagnosis and worse outcomes. The detection of high-risk groups through easy-access interventions is essential to increase the screening rate. OBJECTIVE To identify and analyze patients at high risk of breast cancer, through a web app specially designed for this purpose. MATERIAL AND METHODS The web app stratified respondents according to breast cancer risk into 4 categories: very high risk (symptomatic),

Uncontained fecal wastes in cities may present exposure risks to the public. We collected discarded feces from public spaces in San Francisco, CA for analysis by RT-qPCR for a range of enteric pathogens. Out of 59 samples, we found 12 (20%) were of human origin and 47 (80%) were non-human; 30 of 59 stools were positive for ≥1 of the 35 pathogens assessed, including pathogenic E. coli, Shigella, norovirus, Cryptosporidium, and Trichuris. Using quantitative enteric pathogen estimates and data on observed fecal waste from a public reporting system, we modeled pathogens removed from the environmen

In order to halt the spread of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among injection drug users (IDUs), innovative intervention programs such as Prevention Point Needle Exchange have been established. As a means toward understanding the possibility of establishing User Self-Organizations, we reviewed pertinent literature and analyzed qualitative data that we collected at two syringe exchange sites in San Francisco. Based on our analysis, we discovered that IDUs in San Francisco are committed to working with the needle exchange program and with other IDUs to help decrease the transmission of HIV.

Background. Trauma is a ubiquitous and harmful public health concern. Much like individuals, organizations experience trauma and can embed it within their culture. Left unaddressed, trauma inhibits staff from confronting problems, communicating effectively, and generating solutions, factors that undermine organizational functioning. In response to trauma’s far-reaching impact, recent efforts have focused on creating “trauma-informed” systems that emphasize safety and avoid retraumatization. Trauma-informed systems are uniquely connected to relationships, as the impact of trauma both impairs re

This paper presents early findings from an application of advanced parking technologies to increase effective parking capacity at a transit station during the first half of 2004 in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. It begins with an extensive review of the literature related to transit-based smart parking management systems to illustrate the range of system configurations and their potential travel, economic, and environmental effects. Two important conclusions from this review are that the lack of parking spaces at transit stations may be a significant constraint to transit use and that
