Abstract (sommario):

The demand for economic processes concerning manufacturing technology, cycle time and material properties has led to the development of near net-shape techniques. Precision forging is a well-known manufacturing technology to achieve high output rates. An approach of optimization concerning the part material to produce load-adapted material properties is the so-called compound-forging. Therefore, two different alloys are forge-welded together. Non-tempering and tempering steels are used to compound-forge gears with a hard and wear-resistant surface layer as well as a ductile bulk material. Compound-forging was developed to forge spur gears and shall now be introduced to manufacture helical gears and shafts. For the production of gears and shafts billets made from non-tempering steels are forge-welded together with billets consisting of tempering steels by precision forging as well as indirect impact extrusion. In this paper, the comparison of the material properties of compound-forged gear wheels and shafts with a hard and wear resistant surface layer and a ductile bulk material is given. Mechanical properties as well as the micro-structure of the parts were investigated. The results of the investigations show a load-adapted material distribution of forge-welded materials for the production of gears and shafts.

Abstract (sommario):

The demands for high-performance solid components are constantly increasing. The reason for this development are the steadily growing requirements such as weight reduction, higher resistance to load stresses, and more functional integration. By using material compounds, for example high-strength steel and aluminium alloy, hybrid massive components, whose properties are specially adapted to the specific application, can be manufactured. The first challenge is the joining of two dissimilar materials like steel and aluminium alloy by laser beam welding. In particular, the formation of hard and brittle intermetallic phases (IMP) has a high influence on the mechanical properties of the joining zone. The second challenge is to examine the machinability of such dissimilar compounds. The machining process is mandatory in order to reach an adequate level of accuracy of shape and dimensions. Furthermore, the functionalization of the hybrid compounds will be realized with the machining process where required surface roughness and lifetime-determining residual stresses are adjusted. Connections between induced residual stresses and material properties have been investigated. A significant influence of machining parameters on the surface and subsurface properties is evident. In particular, the cutting edge rounding has a deep impact on the residual stresses as well as on surface roughness.

Based on a census of the polychaete fauna of the Socotra Archipelago in the Indian Ocean we report here new findings on the genus Syllis Savigny in Lamarck, 1818. These ten species are newly recorded from this area: Syllis alternata Moore, 1908; Syllis bouvieri Gravier, 1900; Syllis broomensis (Hartmann-Schröder, 1979); Syllis compacta Gravier, 1900; Syllis crassicirrata (Treadwell, 1925); Syllis gerlachi (Hartmann-Schröder, 1960); Syllis hyalina Grube, 1863; Syllis lutea (Hartmann-Schröder, 1960); Syllis schulzi (Hartmann-Schröder, 1960); Syllis ypsiloides Aguado, San Martín & Ten Hove, 2008. Additionally, Syllis qamhiyn sp. nov. is described as a new species, characterized by its conspicuously thick and short dorsal cirri filled with a gelatinous substance and reduced number of compound chaetae from medium to posterior parapodia, with enlarged shafts and short blades which become almost unidentate and do not fuse with shafts. Following an examination of the holotype of S. bouvieri, its status as a valid species and not as synonym of Syllis prolifera Krohn, 1852, as considered by some authors (see Licher 1999) is confirmed, and a redescription is included.

Abstract (sommario):

A new Streptosyllis species, S. nunezi n. sp., is described from shallow sandy substrates in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands. The new species is distinguished by a unique combination of characters: teeth of the shafts of the compound chaetae covered by hyaline hood; 1–2 lateral tips formed by the hyaline hood covering the blades of the compound chaetae; strongly serrated dorsal simple chaetae which appear as 2–4 robust teeth when viewed laterally. The re-description of its closest congener, the type species S. arenae Webster and Benedict, 1884, is also provided based on the type material, as well as a key to the currently valid species and table of characters for the genus. Finally, some comments are made for the characters distinguishing the genera Streptosyllis, Syllides, Anoplosyllis, Astreptosyllis and Streptospinigera, which are listed in a table and a potential key for their identification is proposed.

In this paper, vibro-acoustic characteristics of a power-split hybrid transmission including a compound planetary gear set are investigated by numerical procedure and refined system dynamics modelling. For validation of the numerical predictions, bench tests are performed for dynamic and acoustic responses of the hybrid transmission, contribution rates of acoustic radiation power induced due to the planetary gears, support bearings, transmission shafts and the gearbox housing are estimated. In improving the noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) performance of the transmission during hybrid vehicle acceleration, traction torques of the motors against the planetary gear parametric resonance are formulated and an optimal control strategy is proposed. By real road NVH test results acquired on board of the midsize hybrid car, it is demonstrated that a significant reduction of the planetary gear whine noise is achieved. As a result, numerical approaches applied to establish relationships between torques of the two traction motors and parametric excitations of the compound planetary gear train are experimentally validated.

Abstract (sommario):

The Roman ‘Agora’ of Gytheum appears to be a large compound with an interior peristyle; its width is 52 m and its length at least 61 m. Excavations have revealed the remains of the north-east corner and a portion of the west wing. The extant architectural blocks allow the reconstruction of the colonnades. Column shafts were made of local red limestone and at least some of them were crowned with lotus-and-acanthus capitals. Three different interaxial column spacings are present. A single column must have stood on each corner of the peristyle. The style of the column capital suggests a date after the yearad100. The entablature is almost identical, in both style and dimensions, to the one found on the Captives' Facade at Corinth. The inscription on two epistyles reveals the private dedication of an exedra totheoi Sebastoiand the city. Most probably the exedra was behind the colonnaded space; the mention oftheoi Sebastoimight suggest imperial cult either in the exedra alone or both in the exedra and in the entire colonnaded compound. Quite possibly, and following A. Themos' suggestion, a large part of the colonnaded compound that is conventionally termed the ‘Agora’ can be identified with the Sebasteum/Caesareum of Gytheum; this latter structure is attested in other inscriptions from the city.

In this paper, vibro-impact-induced gear whine radiated by full hybrid transmission equipped with a compound type power-split planetary gear train is investigated. For accurate simulations of the planetary gear set vibrations, an integrated dynamic model of the transmission is established using professional software MASTA, on which compliance effects of gear pairs, bearings, shafts, housing and planetary carrier are counted for. Numerical analyses are carried out for dynamic responses of the hybrid transmission. Bench tests are also conducted for the present model validation. Computational effort is made to recognize parametrically resonate patterns that cause gear whine in experiment. An optimal tooth modification design is presented for the real planetary gear set. It is shown by test results using the optimized planetary gear sets that gear whine responses of the gearboxes are considerably improved.

Abstract (sommario):

Two new species of Paraopisthosyllis are described herein, P. correiae sp. nov. (State of Pernambuco, NE Brazil) and P. kuluguhin sp. nov. (Philippines). Paraopisthosyllis correiae sp. nov. represents the first record for the genus in Brazilian waters and it is also the second species known to occur outside the Pacific Ocean. This species is characterized by having a marked color pattern, with a transverse red stripe between dorsal cirri on each segment and an inverted V anteriorly and a V posteriorly on some segments, small papillae on body, large, distinct papillae on dorsal cirri, compound chaetae with elongated, bidentate blades, shafts with moderate subdistal serration on margin, pharyngeal tooth located on anterior third of pharynx, near the pharyngeal opening, and reproduction by schizogamy. Paraopisthosyllis kuluguhin sp. nov. represents the first report of the genus for the Philippines, together with P. pardus, originally known from Australia and also found in the Philippines in the present study. This new species is characterized by its color pattern, with dark patches irregularly distributed on anterior segments, forming one anterior pigmented short band and two lateral areas on each chaetiger after the proventricle, club-shaped dorsal cirri, and short, bidentate compound chaetae. Our findings allow us to synonymize the genus Basidiosyllis to Paraopisthosyllis and represent the first report of sexual stolons (scissiparity) in this genus, which supports its allocation into the subfamily Syllinae.

Abstract (sommario):

The phenomenon of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Zambia is a consequence of the HIV and AIDS epidemic. Many of these children are orphaned at a critical developmental stage of their lives when parental care and nurture is most needed. In the African world view, children’s opinions in matters concerning them including care are rarely sort or heard. The main aim of this research was to gain a holistic understanding of the silent voices of children affected and/or infected by the HIV and AIDS, and specifically about their experiences of care and/or lack of it. The other aims were: 1) to research alternative means of getting the silent stories of the marginalized children heard by the Zambian society; and 2) to disseminate the research findings to policy makers. Ten children orphaned by AIDS and vulnerable children, who are the core-searchers, drawn from three Lusaka urban based NGOs participated in the study. The research process and experience was reflected upon by the researcher, co-researchers and the care givers. The research was carried out from a Practical Theology perspective and the narrative approach within the postmodern social-constructionist paradigm. The ABDCE model for fiction writing as a metaphor for doing narrative research was used. This approach enabled the researcher to carry out the research in a systematic manner. It also allowed the researcher and the co-researchers to begin and work together throughout the research process, as the researcher listened to the co-researchers’ stories and experiences of care and/or lack of it and was drawn into them.

A project report submitted to the Faculty of Engineering, University of the Witwatersrand, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Engineering. Johannesburg, 1997.
Due to the extreme costs of establishing new shaft systems in Witwatersrand gold mines it is essential that the resource estimation is optimised, The result of poor Of sub-optimal estimation could be catastrophic even.to the largest of mining companies. This project examines the application of Compound Lognormal Distribution theory and shows the advantages of this distribution model over more traditional models, for the Carbon Leader Reef. The incorporation of information from mined out areas of a deposit in resource estimation is demonstrated. The critical role played by accurate geological modelling is highlighted. The process of Macro Co-Kriging in conjunction with Compound Lognormal Theory is discussed in detail and is shown to be a more accurate estimation technique than traditional techniques using Lognormal theory. Finally the use of the Macro Co-kriged limits are shown to be useful in the classification of Mineral Resources.

Abstract (sommario):

The concentration of low grade iron ore resources was evaluated by washing and reduction. The advanced concentration methods for low grade limonite and hematite iron ores of South Eastern Anatolian resources required such specific methods. The followed column flotation and magnetic separation, microwave radiated reduction of hematite slime and limonite sand orewere investigated on potential reducing treatment. The bubling fluidized bed allows more time to the heat radiation and conduction for reducing to the resistive ıron compounds. Furthermore, heavy limonite and iron oxide allowed sufficient intimate contact coal and biomass through surface pores in the bubbling fluidized bed furnace due to more pyrolysis gas desorption. Bubbling bath porosity decreased by temperature decrease. This research was included reduction in microwave of poor hematite and limonite ores in the microwave ovens, but through smaller tubing flows as sintering shaft plants following column flotation and scavangering operation. Two principle stages could still manage prospective pre reduction granule and pellet production in new sintering plants. There is a lack of energy side which one can produce reduced iron ore in advanced technology plants worldwide. However, for the low grade iron ores such as limonite and sideritic iron ores it was thought that microwave reduction technique was assumed that this could cut energy consumption in the metallurgy plants.

Case study 3: The cluster of villages in the New Territories, known collectively as Ping Shan, is one of the oldest traditional, rice-growing settlements in Hong Kong. It is a mixture of organically evolved and associative cultural landscapes, the latter comprising an auspicious fung shui hill resembling a crab and a strategically positioned pagoda that are credited with bringing fortune and prosperity. British colonial control of the district was enforced by construction of a police station on the fung shui hill which symbolically killed the ‘crab’. The subsequent decline of the village’s fortune is believed to stem from this action and was compounded by the development of a new town on the adjacent farmland. A recent change of use for the police station to a clan museum has lifted the spirits of the villagers but the cultural landscape has been irreversibly depleted by inappropriate land use zoning that permitted urban encroachment and cumulative impacts from major road and rail projects.

Abstract (sommario):

The present paper proposes a new turbo-rotary compound engine (TRCE) and an associated novel thermodynamic cycle. In this engine, shafts linking customary gas turbine engines components such as axial compressors and axial turbines are eliminated. Instead, two or multiple spools are lined up in series within the engine. In the front spool, partial admission rotary vane type turbines drive axial compressor stages. In the back spool, axial turbine stages drive partial admission rotary vane type compressors. Two air streams feed separately the customary turbo components and the rotary vane components, respectively. Accordingly, the primary high mass flow through the axial compressors and turbines is mainly responsible for the generation of net engine thrust and power, where as the secondary, low mass flow through the partial admission rotary components is mainly used to generate the internal energy required to power the axial compressor stages. The energy consumed internally by the engine is minimized because less input shaft power is needed for the rotary vane compressors and higher inlet temperatures and less cooling can be tolerated by the intermittent combustion rotary vane turbines. The result is a radical improvement in both efficiency and net power output. Aerothermodynamics and spool matching calculations comparing a T56-A14 core with a TRCE of similar size and compression ratio show that the new engine provides superior performance characteristics by increasing the net output work by 100% and decreasing the specific fuel consumption by 20%.

Abstract (sommario):

This paper studied the lime-shaft-furnace briquette used as a substitute for coke with an orthogonal experiment. The main material of briquette was the low-rank anthracite from Jinzhunshan of Hunan, China. The binder of briquette in this experiment was a compound binder including the magnesium-base curing agent, activator, biomass fiber and calcium lingosulfonate. The orthogonal table of L27(313) was chosen in this experiment and its factors consist of the magnesium-base curing agent, activator, biomass fiber, calcium lignosulfonate, mixture ratio of bituminous coal, briquetting pressure, briquetting water and size-composition of anthracite. The original compressive strength, original curshing strength, cold compressive strength, cold crushing strength, hot compressive strength and the heat stability of the briquettes made in this experiment were tested according to the Chinese relevant briquette test national standards. The test results were processed utilizing the method of the total probability formula evaluation. Based on the range analysis and analysis of variance, the optimal component of the compound binder and correlative key briquetting parameters were obtained, namely, 4 percent of magnesium-base curing agent, 1 percent of biomass fiber, 1 percent of activator, 0.12 percent of calcium lignosulfonate, and 20kN briquetting pressure, 17 percent of briquetting water, 10 percent mixture ratio of bituminous coal and the size-composition of anthracite with 58 percent of less than 0.5mm size, 14 percent of between 0.5mm and 1.0mm size, 17 percent of between 1.0mm and 2.0mm size and 11 percent of between 2.0mm and 3.0mm size. Analyzed were the mechanism of the compound binder and the optimal parameters of briquetting technics. The experimental results showed that the lime-shaft-furnace briquette prepared according to the optimal scheme obtained in this experiment could basically demand the industrial production of lime-shaft furnace as the substitute for coke.

Abstract Due to advanced technical, economic and environmental reasons, radial shaft and hydraulic rod seals demand new wear resistant counterface materials. Thermal spraying offers one alternative to common hardening and hard plating technologies. Applying corrosion resistant ceramic coatings by Thermal Spraying leads to new applications in sealing systems. The combination with PTFE-compound sealing materials can be used with aqueous, non-lubricating and corrosive fluids. The authors have carried out extensive research on how the coating material and the surface structure of the coating effect hydraulic rod and radial shaft sealing systems. The presented results show that the influence of the coating on the sealing is critical for the performance of both standard and new custom sealing systems.

This paper studies sensitivity of compound planetary gear natural frequencies and vibration modes to system parameters. Based on a lumped parameter model of general compound planetary gears and their distinctive modal properties [1], the eigensensitivities to inertias and stiffnesses are calculated and expressed in compact formulae. Analysis reveals that eigenvalue sensitivities to stiffness parameters are directly proportional to modal strain energies, and eigenvalue sensitivities to inertia parameters are proportional to modal kinetic energies. Furthermore, the eigenvalue sensitivities to model parameters are determined by inspection of the modal strain and kinetic energy distributions. This provides an effective way to identify those parameters with the greatest impact on tuning certain natural frequencies. The present results, combined with the modal properties of general compound planetary gears, show that rotational modes are independent of translational bearing/shaft stiffnesses and masses of carriers/central gears, translational modes are independent of torsional bearing/shaft stiffnesses and moment of inertias of carriers/central gears, and planet modes are independent of all system parameters of other planet sets, the shaft/bearing stiffness parameters of carriers/rings, and the mass/moment of inertia parameters of carriers/central gears.

Abstract Moscow SIA RADON has developed and tested an experimental plant for treatment of radioactive waste of the mixed type including up to 40 wt. % of incombustible components with the capacity from 50 to 80 kg/h on the base of the shaft furnace with plasma heat source. Heating furnace was provided due to the arc DC plasma torch with electric capacity from 60 to 150 kW, designed at RADON. The expenses of the electric power for plasma torch were 0.5 up to 1.5 kWh/1 kg of waste depending on their composition. Pyrolytic gas with calorific value up to 4.5–5.5 MJ/kg at an output of the furnace was received, which burning provided a necessary temperature mode in the afterburner. In the shaft furnace the mode impeding radionuclides loss with off-gases has been realized. The ablation of 137Cs from the furnace did not exceed 12%, 60Co – 2.5% and trans-uranium elements – 1% due to the shaft operation mode chosen. The treatment of radioactive waste without fluxing additives has been carried out, and the slag compound with high chemical durability has been obtained.

The power-split gear mechanisms is widely applied in power transmission because of the advantages of compact design, lighter weight and high power density. The load sharing and the load distribution are the important performance issues while designing the power split mechanisms. The paper propose a computerized approach based on the influence coefficient method for loaded tooth contact analysis of such the gear transmission. Not only the load sharing of the multiple contact tooth pairs and the loaded transmission errors, but also the distributed contact stresses and the corresponding contact patterns on all the engaged tooth flanks can be calculated by using the proposed LTCA approach. Some analysis results are also discussed with a study case of the first planetary stage of a compound cycloid planetary gear drive.

Abrasive Flow Machining (AFM) is a non-traditional finishing method used for precision deburring, edge contouring, surface improvement and the removal of abusive machining and thermal recast layers. A firm-bodied abrasive laden compound is flowed at pressures of 75–500 psi (5–35 bar) across selective features of a fixtured workpiece. Gas turbine components benefited by this method include: axial and centrifugal rotors, stators, turbine blades, compressor and turbine disks, shafts, seals and other rotating parts. AFM process principles are explained and specific applications are reviewed.

The paper deals with a 3-D numerical simulation and validation against industrial measurements of turbulent frozen reacting flow in a subsonic compressible gas Venturi’s ejector used as “fluid dynamic engine” for external flue gas recirculation in a state-of-the-art “annular shaft” lime kiln. Higher stagnation thermodynamics parameters of the ejector hot gas primary stream permit the avoidance of the condensing temperature window of compounds such as K2O and Na2O, and KCl and NaCl that produce sticky builds-up on the ejector’s internal wall. An improved gas dynamics effectiveness allows the maximization of the amount of secondary flue gas stream using much less primary stream mass flow rate. The commercial Fluent™ UNS/5 software was used to predict all flow behavior characteristics inside the original and new Venturi’s ejectors. A reasonable agreement has been found between the computed and experimental flow rate figures of the secondary flue gas stream of the actual functioning kiln.
