The aim of this article is to explore the intricate relations between objectivism, subjectivism, and constructionism. I explore the construction of social problems in everyday professional practice as a valuable source for addressing and reflecting on differences in perceptions of knowledge. Using data from a study of how Danish social workers perceive social problems, the article shows how social workers’ perceptions of social problems reveal a sociological sense of social problems that renders possible both ontological assumptions, as well as epistemological reflections on the objective, subjective, and social constructionist dimensions of social problems. The social workers are constructing a model of social problems and how they are reproduced, as well as epistemological reflections on the uncertainty of knowing the “reality” of social problems. Those constructions are not formulated strictly in line with scholarly approaches but rather stem from experiences of working with social problems. The article proposes that we can learn something from this in terms of reimagining social constructionism. I propose that social constructionists should cultivate a sociological sense of the practical perceptions and approaches to solve social problems in society.

Abstract (sommario):

This paper aims to propose a framework that puts the stakeholders at the forefront of achieving sustainability in the social context. This research, thus, argues that the social sustainability outcomes in construction are best achieved by taking into account the satisfaction of the stakeholders. Based on sustainability and equity theories, a dynamic assessment model has been developed to evaluate the contributions of projects in a social context. Multiple stakeholders and their differing interests associated with the construction projects have been integrated using social network analysis. The mapping of the relationships between the project stakeholders, with respect to their relative stakes and seven social core functions, have been integrated into the assessment model. The findings of this research suggest that the degree of satisfying the needs of diverse stakeholders is highly significant in achieving social sustainability performance of projects. Using a case study from Saudi Arabia, the applicability and significance of the assessment model has been demonstrated. The application of the model provides the opportunity to identify any problems and to enhance the overall performance of projects in the social context. The functionality and efficacy of the model need to be further tested outside the Saudi Arabian region. The research is original in the sense that for the first time, a novel approach has been developed, putting the stakeholders at the forefront of achieving sustainability outcomes in construction projects

This paper raises serious problems for the commonly held claim that races are socially constructed. The first section sketches out an approach to our construction of institutional phenomena that, taking Searle’s general approach, restricts social construction proper to cases where we adopt rules that bind relevant parties to treat things of a type in certain ways, thus constituting important roles in, and parts of, our social lives. I argue this conception, construction-by-rules, helps distinguish genuine construction from other activities and relations and also solves a problem raised against simplistic conceptions. The second shows why and how Sally Haslanger, Linda Alcoff, and Glenn Loury have explained race as a social construct. The next points out problems for their and other accounts, including circularity, difficulties arising from conceptual and linguistic history, and non sequiturs. After returning to Haslanger in more detail, I proceed critically to engage work by Ian Hacking, Lawrence Blum, Luc Faucher and Edouard Machery, and Charles Mills. The following sections move from specific accounts in the literature to offer general arguments that viewing races as products of social construction threatens to mislead in numerous ways. At the end, I discuss the significance of the issue and challenge whether social constructionist accounts are genuinely liberating.

Social innovation laboratories (SIL) are spaces for the construction of knowledge where UNESCO's Sustainable Development Goals can be met. The objective of the research was to identify the most relevant studies about the social construction of knowledge, within the framework of the SIL, related to environmental problems and to analyze them in order to propose solutions for sustainability. The method used to locate the articles published in open access, from 2010 to 2020, in Scopus, Web of Science and Google Academic, was the Systematic Literature Review. The findings show that the working groups are multidisciplinary and originate proposals from different areas of science. The products are built with an open approach. Universities are the spaces that most promote participation in the laboratories to generate sustainability actions applicable in real life and work is done to scale up the prototypes to local, national and international levels.

Appeals to authority have always played a key role in the construction of social problems. Authority legitimates claims, which is why claim-makers have always sought its validation. An exploration into the historical dimension of the social construction of authority provides insight into changing foundations on which claims about social problems are made. In contrast to the Middle Ages, the modern era has found it difficult to gain consensus on the meaning of authority. This historical shift in the status of authority provides the context for contemporary competitive claims-making about social problems.

The purpose of the article is to understand the paradigmatic field of socio-political research in modern Russia. The problem field of implementing the positivist paradigm and carrying out measurement procedures within the framework of this applied research methodology is analyzed. It is proved that quantitative and qualitative research strategies do not serve as different types of research approaches, but as successive stages in the implementation of a single project. A discussion is presented about the possibility and necessity of researchers’ abandoning the principle of non-evaluation of the results of scientific analysis in the field of social knowledge. Some correspondences between the functions of social sciences and the type of research methodology are established. Using the example of applied political analysis, the ways of studying social phenomena and processes, as well as the methodological approaches, methods and tools used for this, are systematized. Particular attention is paid to the problem of unreliability of survey data and limitations of data obtained during monitoring of social media. The capabilities of the cognitive instrumentalist are presented as a means of solving these methodological problems. As a result of the study, arguments are given in favor of the need to intensify the use of the critical social science paradigm in social scientific knowledge and shift the research focus in conditions of civilizational confrontation to social construction (formation, modeling).

Abstract (sommario):

Drought is a complex subject that has varied definitions and perspectives. Although drought has historically been characterized as an environmental problem from both the meteorological and agricultural communities, it is not considered a sociological disaster despite its severe societal impacts. Utilizing the framework developed by Spector and Kitsuse (2011) and Stallings (1995), this research examines the process through which drought is defined as a social problem. An analysis of the data revealed drought was well covered in Africa, India, China, Australia, and New Zealand, yet very little coverage focused on the United States. There were less than 10 articles discussing drought and drought impacts in the United States. The workshops/meetings examined also were lacking in the attention to drought, although their overall theme was focused on hazards and resilience. Six sessions in over 16 years of meetings/workshops focused on the topic of drought, and one session was focused on the condition in Canada. The interviews uncovered five thematic areas demonstrating drought understanding and awareness: Use of outreach to get the message out; agricultures familiarity with drought; the role of drought in media; the variability of what drought is; and water conservation. Drought's claims-makers who are dedicated to providing outreach and education to impacted communities. Drought is often overlooked due to its slow onset and evolving development makes it difficult to determine when to engage in recovery efforts. Drought defined as a social problem also expands theoretical conversations regarding what events or issues should be included within the sociological disaster list of topics.

During the study's first stage we noticed that the Swedish term ” utanförskap” was constructed for political purposes, the term’s ambiguity what was first raised our interest. Therefore the aims of this study was to examine how social workers at the social welfare office and the labor market related project Framtid Kronoberg as well as politicians within the administration of Arbete & Välfärd (Work & Welfare) relates to utanförskap as a social phenomenon. The study’s second aim was to examine how the aforementioned persons consider utanförskap to be counteracted among young adults. The study has shown that the interviewees have different opinions regarding the meaning of utanförskap. Furthermore the study shows that there is a consensus regarding activation as the solution for utanförskap through either employment or by attending labor market related activities. The study has also shown that the activation requirements made by the politicians of the administration, with the purpose of placing young adults on social welfare in labor market activities consists of continuous controls and sanctions when deviation is noted.

Abstract (sommario):

The purpose of our study is to describe and understand whether, and if so, how social workers in school and in social services construct computer gaming adolescents as a social problem. We chose social workers who encounter adolescents with different problems. We have conducted qualitative interviews with vignettes to capture the social workers' reasoning about computer gaming adolescents and how they handle this in their work. The study shows that all social workers we interviewed had encountered adolescents with troubling computer gaming habits. In the study, all agree that computer gaming becomes a problem when it leads to deviant behaviour such as not going to school, staying up all night and so on. Social workers have adapted their work with computer gaming adolescents after their workplace policies, resources and make efforts to make it manageable to work with. One example of how they make it manageable is that they look at the problem in a context and focus on other factors than the excessive computer gaming such as poor family relationships. In the process of being established as a social problem computer gaming addiction is weak.

Over the last decades, surveillance has transformed into a pervasive phenomenon woven into the fabric of socio-economic life. In this process, surveillance has itself undergone a structural transformation as its principal agents such as prison guards and CCTV operators have been replaced by algorithms and data-driven technologies. Contemporary surveillance then is embedded in, and expression of, a fundamental remaking of the world, where human decision-making is increasingly supplanted by computational mechanisms, and lived experience is mediated, and even constituted, by computation. This thesis is a sociological work with an emphasis on the role of communication at the intersection of computation and surveillance (‘computational surveillance’). Current debates have predominantly focussed on the systems and mechanisms of computational surveillance. Less emphasis has been placed on the lived experience of inhabiting a computed world, and specifically how people can query and act towards computational surveillance. This thesis makes both a theoretical and empirical contribution to this question. Through a framework rooted in the sociology of knowledge, the thesis develops a theory of agency towards computational surveillance. It outlines the changing conditions under which knowledge of social reality is constructed in a computational world and theorises modes of reclaiming these conditions for human agents. This theory informed, and its further development emerged out of the findings from a qualitative study of 40 young people in Germany and the UK about their everyday encounters with computational surveillance, which was conducted as part of the thesis. It highlights how participants obtain knowledge about invisible computational mechanisms through their everyday activities and documents practices through which they collaboratively frame computers as interlocutors that they act towards. Lastly, this thesis documents the tactics and strategies employed by participants to hide from, or manipulate computational surveillance, and how they adopt a logic akin to computers in this process.

Sous les coups de boutoir d'une série de menaces informationnelles, supposées ou réelles (terrorisme, radicalisation, complotisme, désinformation…), les acteurs politiques français en sont venus à voir dans Internet et les réseaux sociaux, non plus des avatars tangibles de ces « autoroutes de l'information » qui devaient rendre les citoyens plus éclairés, mais la source de nombreux maux contemporains menaçant les conditions mêmes d'existence de notre démocratie. La série de termes et de concepts tels que « fake news », « ingérences informationnelles » ou « radicalisation en ligne » nés au milieu des années 2010, n'est que la face émergée terminologique, d'une bascule plus profonde qui a fait voler en éclats le consensus optimiste qui prévalait encore dix ans plus tôt, lors de la popularisation d'internet dans les foyers français. En nous inscrivant dans une lecture paradigmatique de cette chute, nous avons étudié la série d'anomalies qui ont définitivement ébranlé l'acceptabilité du modèle linéaire selon lequel le développement des sources d'information va de pair avec un meilleur système politique. Ces anomalies, que le syntagme de « fake news » permet, en partie, de subsumer, revêtent majoritairement un caractère exogène. Si les politiques publiques ont changé en France, cela est moins la résultante de quelconques mutations internes, qu'en raison des craintes au long cours associées à la propagande étatique ou paraétatique pouvant être exercée sur notre territoire par des acteurs étrangers hostiles, des chaînes satellitaires extra-européennes aux médias d'État et autres campagnes d'ingérence informationnelle. Réduire cela à une simple crise de panique morale épisodique liée à des événements précis ne permet qu'imparfaitement de rendre compte du lien dialectique étroit qui unit ces troubles dans le (cyber)espace public avec une série de crises systémiques, dont la série d'attentats terroristes ayant touché le pays au cours de la décennie 2010 constitue la partie la plus sensible. Originellement, c'est bien parce que l'État a été troublé, qu'il a eu peur et qu'il a assisté à une remise en cause latente de son autorité et de son pouvoir de police sur l'espace public que, sous contrainte, il a constamment cherché à renforcer son arsenal législatif pour faire face à ce qu'il a généralement perçu comme de nouvelles menaces. En recourant à une approche socio-historique, nous avons cherché à comprendre, de la Révolution française à nos débats contemporains sur les réseaux sociaux, à travers l'examen de la presse et des projets de lois sédimentés au long cours, ce que cela nous dit de la perception de l'espace public de la part des autorités publiques. Ces travaux nous permettent de restituer dans une trame historique, épaisse de plus de deux siècles, la tension qui tiraille toujours le législateur entre une vision abstraite et idéale de l'espace public, les craintes associées à la circulation de bruits et de paroles séditieuses et l'ombre portée d'acteurs intérieurs ou extérieurs qui chercheraient à le subvertir. Si les peurs contemporaines sur le sujet sont indéniablement frappées du sceau de la modernité, l'examen de celles qui ont saisi les autorités dans le passé, nous permet de donner du sens à celles-ci, notamment en soulignant la contribution qu'elles apportent à la structuration de l'État et à son affermissement, ainsi que les dérives inhérentes à ce type de processus
Under the blows of a series of informational threats, whether perceived or real (terrorism, radicalization, conspiracy theories, disinformation…), French political actors have come to view the Internet and social networks not as tangible avatars of the “information superhighways” that were supposed to make citizens more informed, but as the source of many contemporary ills that threaten the very conditions of our democracy. The series of terms and concepts such as “fake news,” “informational interference,” or “online radicalization,” which emerged in the mid-2010s, is merely the terminological tip of a deeper shift that shattered the optimistic consensus that had prevailed just ten years earlier, when the internet became popularized in French households. In adopting a paradigmatic reading of this downfall, we studied the series of anomalies that definitively shattered the acceptance of the linear model, which posited that the development of information sources goes hand in hand with a better political system. These anomalies, which the term “fake news” partially subsumes, are largely exogenous in nature. If public policies have changed in France, this is less the result of any internal mutations and more due to long-standing fears associated with state or para-state propaganda that could be exercised on our territory by hostile foreign actors, from extra-European satellite channels to state media and other campaigns of informational interference. Reducing this to a simple episodic moral panic linked to specific events fails to fully account for the close dialectical relationship between these disturbances in the (cyber)public space and a series of systemic crises, of which the wave of terrorist attacks that struck the country during the 2010s is the most sensitive part. Originally, it was because the State was troubled, fearful, and witnessed a latent questioning of its authority and policing power over public space that, under pressure, it constantly sought to strengthen its legislative arsenal to face what it generally perceived as new threats. By employing a socio-historical approach, we sought to understand, from the French Revolution to our contemporary debates on social networks, through the examination of the press and long-standing legislative projects, what this reveals about the public authorities' perception of the public space. This work allows us to trace, through a historical framework spanning more than two centuries, the tension that continues to pull lawmakers between an abstract and ideal vision of the public space, the fears associated with the circulation of rumors and seditious speech, and the looming presence of internal or external actors seeking to disrupt it. While contemporary fears on this subject are undeniably marked by modernity, examining those that gripped authorities in the past allows us to make sense of them, particularly by highlighting their contribution to the structuring and strengthening of the State, as well as the inherent abuses that accompany such processes

The increasing number of “orphans and vulnerable children” (‘OVC’) in sub-Saharan Africa has been the subject of much inquiry and intervention in research, policy and practice. Two major concerns have been highlighted: i) traditional mechanisms for their care and support are overstretched and ii) ‘OVC’ have poor socioeconomic outcomes. Dominant discourses emphasise adults’ central role in ‘OVC’ wellbeing while ‘OVC’ are cast as helpless, passive victims and not active social agents who demonstrate resilience and ingenuity in dealing with difficult circumstances. Focussing on Sheema district in rural Uganda, this study sought to give voice to ‘OVC’ and use their lived experiences to develop a robust framework of care and support. ‘OVC’ were engaged as producers of knowledge and agents of change using innovative child-centred approaches to explore representations of their care and support through verbal and visual representation of their lived realities. This methodology enabled the development of narratives and critical dialogue about social issues with grassroots social activism. For example participatory methods such as draw-and-write, community mapping and daily-routine-diagrams located the conceptual tools and analytic skills in the hands of ‘OVC’. This study found that the majority of existing ‘OVC’ representations are adult constructs not necessarily subscribed to by ‘OVC’ themselves. Acknowledging their difficult circumstances, most ‘OVC’ have devised solutions to their challenges and are optimistic despite being constrained by structural and cultural barriers. Traditional care mechanisms have evolved and require strengthening, particularly at community level. The lens through which most interventions have been commissioned, implemented and evaluated is paternalistic and does not acknowledge ‘OVC’ competencies. ‘OVC’ voices and lived experiences should inform interventions; also they should be constructed in a more balanced light – showing their challenges while acknowledging their agency in dealing with these challenges. This study proposes a more nuanced label for ‘OVC’ and also develops a robust theoretical framework for their care and support.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract This chapter describes the technical background for solving combinatorial problems using zero-suppressed binary decision diagrams (ZDDs). A ZDD can store a vast number of feasible solutions of a combinatorial problem, such as vertex sets and subgraphs of a given graph. ZDDs enable obtaining many good solutions, random sampling, filtering, and more, rather than just finding a single optimal solution. In this chapter, we describe the definition and characteristics of ZDDs, explain two typical ZDD construction frameworks, and show algorithms that utilize constructed ZDDs.

Abstract (sommario):

Background: Trauma as a fact of collective perception plays an important role in the formation of collective identities in modern Western societies. A sociological analysis of Alexander's cultural trauma aims to explain the symbolic mechanisms behind the construction of trauma. Its explanatory power is illustrated by the example of events in pre-war Ukraine. Purpose: Analyze events in Ukraine using the concept of cultural trauma. Methods: To achieve the goal, the method of analysis of events and facts was used, as well as theoretical analysis of sources related to the concept of cultural trauma. Results: Analysis of events in Ukraine through the concept of cultural trauma by J. Alexander revealed a direct link between trauma and mediatization of traumatic objects. Conclusion: Thus, we analyzed the socio-cultural context of events in Ukraine based on the concept of "cultural trauma". The signs and areas that were affected by it are highlighted. The characteristics of cultural trauma are named and examples of events and practices, both individual and collective, are given, which contributed to the creation of historical and cultural memory. Abstract (sommario):

Background: The period of the Russo-Ukrainian war is rich in visual symbols. We can observe the emergence and creation of new symbols that contain important cultural and social codes. People create one social construct and reject another, forming their opinion about the war and their participation in it, demonstrating the state of society. Purpose: To determine citizens' perceptions and how they form a social construct during the Russian-Ukrainian war, a study of Ukraine Post stamps (visual symbols) can be conducted. Methods: Through the paradigm of social constructivism, we examine this research. We obtained empirical data through quantitative method using content analysis. Since our focus is on how Ukrainians construct a social construct, we chose to analyze the arguments presented in comments regarding the stamps that Ukrposhta submitted for the competition held from March 8 to March 10, 2022 (Ескізи поштових марок, 2022). Results: Analyzing the comments on the stamps, we obtained two consecutive branches: 1. Commentators' behavior. In addition to likes, 10.6% of the voters left comments, 8.5% followed the contest rules, and 0.5% argued their choice. 2. Formation of a social construct. Commentators form a social construct based on the following parameters and attempts at social encoding: Textual symbolism (condemnation of profanity, praise for the absence of Russian profanity, desire for profanity, condemnation of surzhyk). National and military symbols (support for modifications with the trident, condemnation of modifications with the trident, absence of identification of profanity in the trident, support for identification of the Ukrainian coat of arms, condemnation of its presence, support for identification of Russian colors, condemnation of the Russian tricolor on Ukrainian stamps, support for the expression of blue-yellow colors. Warrior symbol (military) (support for the presence of the Ukrainian military, condemnation of the warrior symbol). Conclusion: Summarizing the views of commentators, we see citizens of Ukraine who recognize and respect Ukrainian culture, identify themselves as Ukrainians, clearly distinguish themselves from the occupying country, strive to interact with friendly countries, and understand the strength of their own army. This scientific work will be relevant for the study of patriotism, nationalism, building a civil state, propaganda, and counter-propaganda, as visual symbols are not only a reflection of society but also a tool for influencing it. Background: after the Russian occupation in February – March 2022, an occupation regime was established in a significant part of Southern Ukraine, within the framework of which the aggressor state is carrying out institutional construction, in particular, in the field of education. Purpose: analyze the dysfunctional character of the institute of education in the temporarily occupied territories of the South of Ukraine Methods: qualitative analysis of photo images that are publicly available on the Internet Results: the hypothesis that the main task of educational institutions is Russification, the spread of enemy propaganda and the education of the young generation in the spirit of collaboration has been confirmed. For this purpose, various tools are used - re-education centers, folk and unofficial holidays, inciting inter-ethnic enmity, creation of children's and youth organizations. The activities of social organizations in the field of education are aimed at the destruction of Ukrainian identity, deindividuation, zombification and militarization of the consciousness of schoolchildren and students. Conclusion: the dysfunctionality of the educational institution in the temporarily occupied territories of the South of Ukraine is the result of the deliberate actions of powerful actors, which are aimed at preserving and strengthening the occupation regime, dehumanizing the educational process and turning the school into a closed totalitarian space Key words: social institution, education, dysfunctionality, visualization, russification

Background: The topic of human-animal relationship has been gaining more and more popularity in recent years in the Western scientific discourse, but there are not so many studies and scientific works.You can find only isolated works and empirical investigations on this topic in the Ukrainian scientific space, although the role that pets play in the life of a modern person is quite important. Purpose: justification of modern trends in human-animal relations through the prism of sociology. Methods: the methods of analysis, synthesis, systematization and generalization were the main ones in the work with the primary sources on the topic of the publication, which made it possible to determine the features of various approaches to the study of important aspects of the human – domestic animal relationship. The method of secondary analysis of sociological research made it possible to reveal the current situation regarding the practices of interaction between people and domestic animals. Results: Current aspects of the study of the pet`s role in people's lives have been clarified. The evolution of a person's attitude towards an animal in a historical-cultural section from an object (utilitarian attitude) to a subject, a partner in interaction (animal-companion, animal-friend, animal-child, etc.) is considered. The mechanism of changing the status of a domestic animal through the prism of the phenomenological paradigm is substantiated: the attitude towards animals depends on the framework of perception of their status and essence, which can be the values, norms and rules adopted in society or in a certain environment in a certain period. The factors that contributed to the change of the specified norms and rules of interaction were identified, including: the spread of humanism and posthumanism values, urbanization, the tendency to anthropomorphize animals, etc., The methodological foundations of B. Latour's actor-network theory were used to explain the subjectivity status of domestic animals. According to it, things (in our case, animals) are not only passive agents of interaction, not only exposed to the influence of a person, but also exert an influence on him. This means, that they are partners in a network of interactions. The process of domestic animals status transformation is illustrated on the basis of the social construction stages of reality by P. Berger and T. Luсkmann. Social, racial, and demographic characteristics of social practices related to pets are explored. Conclusion: The topic of interaction between domestic animals and people is not sufficiently disclosed in the sociological discourse, since interest in it began quite recently. Scientists were motivated to intensify research on this topic by changes in the attitude towards the animals that live nearby. From consumerism to partnership. This led to a change in the utilitarian value of animals, which began to be determined by feelings and emotions. This situation became possible as a result of the transformations of the value dimension of society, the spread of the philosophy of animals treatment, the principles of posthumanism. As well as the aggravation of the modern person needs to interact with animals, experience "live", real emotions and feelings (love , affection, devotion, etc.) in the world of technologies and rational relations. At present the information and communication technologies in education can be a catalyst in solving important social problems connected with increasing the educational resources and services availability and quality, real and equal opportunities in getting education for citizens despite their residence, social status and income. One of the most important education tasks is to develop students’ active cognitive attitude to knowledge. Cognitive activity in universities is a necessary stage in preparing for further professional life. The solution of task of formation of ecological competence of mining profile engineer requires the reasonable selection of the means of information and communication technologies conducing formation of ecological competence. Pressing task is constructive and research approach to preparation of future engineers to performance of professional duties in order to make them capable to develop engineering projects independently and exercise control competently. The relevance of the material covered in the article, due to the need to ensure the effectiveness of the educational process in the preparation of the future Mining Engineers. We analyze the source with problems of formation of ecological competence. The article focuses mainly general-purpose computer system support learning Moodle, which allows you to organize individual and collective work of students to master the specialized course teaching material used in teaching special course "Environmental Geoinformatics" in the implementation of educational research.
