Cet article porte sur la période de transition entre le système impérial ottoman et l’établissement des structures de l’État moderne en Irak. Au travers d’une analyse des usages des termes « communauté » (tā’ifa) et « minorité » (aqalliyya) dans les textes concernant la communauté juive de même que de leur contexte, cette contribution s’efforce de montrer que les reconfigurations identitaires caractéristiques de l’ère post-ottomane ne se firent ni en parfaite herméticité aux nouvelles influences de la puissance mandataire britannique, ni en rupture totale avec les structures ottomanes. Basée sur des documents produits par les acteurs, extérieurs (officiels irakiens, acteurs britanniques, membres des communautés chrétiennes et chiites et représentants officiels de la Société des Nations), comme intérieurs (responsables de la communauté juive irakienne), elle démontre en effet que la transition politique et identitaire pour les communautés non musulmanes d’Irak participe d’un syncrétisme complexe, dans lequel on trouve les traces d’un subtil équilibre entre rupture et continuité. « Never total change, never total continuity », résume Carl Brown.
