This article describes a pneumatological methodology of Christian mission in solidarity with the poor, which is exhibited by African Pentecostal-Charismatics in ministry in Tanzania and West Africa today. The methodology is drawn from the experiences of dreams and visions as they fund an approach rooted in two pneumatological essentials for mission praxis: (1) “poverty of spirit” as an epistemological requisite and (2) the power of Spirit for mission in an oppressive spirit-filled world. The thesis argued here is that this methodological approach to missions is evidence of the “creative tension” between mission and eschatology that missiologist David Bosch called for. As well, this en-Spirited missions motif critiques the rationalist neglect of experience Bosch lamented and satisfies as an example of what he envisioned as an “emerging ecumenical missionary paradigm.”

AbstractWritten by one of David Bosch's long-time colleagues, this paper provides an informal, yet important personal view into the life and work of David Bosch, revealing not only an internationally recognized missiologist, but also a man whose everyday life was intimately connected to his missiology. His was a life formed by missiology, yet his missiology also characterised his life. Key events in Bosch's life are related personally, including his early missionary experience in the Transkei, his role in the formation of the Southern African Missiological Society and its journal Missionalia, the worldwide impact of his magnum opus, Transforming Mission, and the devastation many experienced by his death in 1992. Bosch's focion ecumenical missiology, “alternative community”, and pacifism are explored alongside his commitment to, and tension with, the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa. The paper concludes by lauding one of Bosch's greatest missiological contributions: his liberation of the definition of mission, moving away from “mission is…” and toward “mission as…” or, “mission in many modes”. For a region purportedly a backwater of South African environmental history at the close of the twentieth century,1 the Cape has moved rapidly toward centre stage at the start of the new millennium. It now boasts a wealth of literature in international journals and last year saw the publication of the first book-length environmental histories of the region, with the promise of still more to come, not least from a strong crop of recently or nearly completed doctoral dissertations in academies round the north Atlantic rim.2 The Cape owes this distinction to being the oldest region of British missionary and imperial endeavour in the subcontinent, guaranteeing extensive archives in the northern hemisphere and explaining both the bias in the current scholarship towards the pre-1910 period and lack of a comparable scholarship on any other part of southern Africa.3 This anomalous florescence can also be read for likely future trends in a national historiography otherwise unanimously deemed moribund if not actually in decline for the past decade.4 What it reveals are two contending trajectories: the first a shift away from political economy to the history of ideas and the other a fidelity to the late twentieth-century radical social history tradition and its core theme of the social relations of production.

This study seeks to give a broad picture of public theology and to bring this into conversation with the South African Missiologist David J. Bosch. The importance of ecclesiology for our public theology is pointed out and the development of Bosch's ecclesiology is traced from the 1970's through to Transforming Mission and beyond. From this some first conclusions are made concerning what the contribution of Bosch might be in the field of public theology. Copyright

In this ethnography of a destroyed town in southern Missouri’s Bootheel region, authors David Todd Lawrence and Elaine J. Lawless examine two conflicting narratives about the flood of 2011—one promoted by the Corps of Engineers that boasts the success of the levee breach and the flood diversion, and the other gleaned from oral narratives collected from the displaced Pinhook residents, stories that reveal a lack of concern on the part of the government for the destruction of their town. Receiving inadequate warning and no evacuation assistance during the breach, residents lost everything. Many still seek restitution and funding for relocation and reconstruction of their town. The authors’ research traces a long history of discrimination and neglect of the rights of the Pinhook community, beginning with migration from the Deep South to the southern-most counties in Missouri, through purchasing and farming the land, up to the Birds Point levee breach. Their stories relate what it has been like for the former residents of this stable African American town to be displaced dispersed in other small towns, living with relatives and friends while trying to negotiate the bureaucracy surrounding Federal Emergency Management Agency and State Emergency Management Agency assistance. Ultimately, the stories of displaced citizens of Pinhook reveal a strong African American community, whose bonds were developed over time and through shared traditions, bonds that will persist even if the town is never rebuilt.

The reception in South Africa of the utopian tradition initiated by Marx, Engels and Lenin is analysed, focusing on the period from 1910 to 1930. The chapter examines the early South African dreams of freedom derived from or influenced by classical Marxism: the political journalism of Olive Schreiner from the 1880s to 1920; the novel 1960 (A Retrospect) by James and Margaret Scott Marshall; the Christian-influenced dreams of David Ivon Jones and Josiah Gumede; the 1928 Native Republic Thesis prescribed for South Africa by the Soviet Union’s Comintern; the literary visions of freedom of Edward Roux (inspired by Swinburne) and J. T. Bain (inspired by William Morris), as well as the many dreams expressed in literary form in the pages of The International and successor CPSA newspapers The South African Worker and Umsebenzi; J. M. Gibson’s ideal of an economic freedom that supersedes the political freedoms of liberalism; and the Stalinist telos driven by ‘the deepening economic crisis’ and culminating in the dictatorship of the proletariat. Roux’s political cartoons envisioning freedom and published in Umsebenzi are analysed.
