Muslim merchants were active as traders from the seventh century. Several archipelago Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms established com-mercial and diplomatic connections with Middle Eastern Islamic rulers. Archaeological evidence pointing to this fact has been found at a shipwreck site in the Java Sea near Cirebon. Among the discovered trade goods were indications of Islam in the form of a stamp-mould with the inscription asma’ul husna. Although most of the Indonesian community follow Sunni teaching, in practice at this time in Sumatra and Java there are devotees of Syi’ah. Archaeological evidence points that Islam entered Southeast Asian archipelago from Persia via Gujarat, India. The religion was brought by merchants to Southeast Asia, especially to Indonesia and the Malay peninsula.

Siberut Island, Mt. Talamau, Rimbo Panti Nature Reserve, and intervening locations in West Sumatra Province were visited during two expeditions in 2018-2019 by ornithologists from the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense (MZB) - Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Louisiana State University Museum of Natural Science (LSUMNS), and Andalas University. The main objective of these expeditions was to obtain data and tissue-subsample rich museum specimens for morphological and genetic studies of phylogeny and population genetics of Southeast Asian birds aimed at understanding the causes of avian diversification in the region. We also observed, photographed, and audio-recorded numerous bird species during the expeditions and archived these data. In total, 285 species were identified, and specimen material was collected from 13 species and 26 subspecies not previously represented in tissue resource collections. Here, we provide complete lists of birds found at each location, highlight distributional discoveries, and note cases of potential taxonomic, ecological, and conservation interest.

Abstract. An ionosonde network consisting of a meridional chain and an equatorial pair was established in the Southeast Asian area. Three of four ionosondes are along the magnetic meridian of 100° E; two are close to the magnetic conjugate points in Northern Thailand and West Sumatra, Indonesia, and the other is near the magnetic equator in the Malay Peninsula, Thailand. The fourth ionosonde is also near the magnetic equator in Vietnam but separated by about 6.3° towards east from the meridional chain. For a preliminary data analysis, nighttime ionospheric height variations at the three stations of the meridional chain were examined. The results demonstrate that the coordination of the network has a great potential for studying ionosphere/thermosphere dynamics. Through the assistance of model calculations, thermospheric neutral winds were inferred and compared with the HWM93 empirical thermospheric wind model. Higher-order wind variations that are not represented in the empirical model were found.

This dissertation is a study of early Islamicate commerce in natural luxuries of the tropical Indian Ocean and Western Pacific Rim, such as spices, ambergris and pearls, between the ninth and eleventh centuries C.E. I approach this topic by looking at a wide array of textual sources, from geographies, anecdotes, travel narratives, inscriptions, and the records of embassies, to materia medica and the oldest surviving Islamicate cookbook. I analyze these sources alongside material culture, archeological evidence from ports in Iran, Oman, and Southeast Asia, and newly-discovered shipwrecks from the Java Sea. Adapting the work of environmental scientists to the thesis, I locate this early Islamicate commerce within a bio-geographical space, the tropical "Indo-Pacific." I argue that desires for the tropical luxuries of the environmentally-distinct Indo-Pacific helped to define the cosmopolitan culture of early Islamicate societies, from Iran and Iraq to Egypt and Spain. These desires promoted an expanding Islamicate maritime commerce across the Indo-Pacific, which led to the flourishing of port-cities in southern Iran and Oman. This maritime trade expanded Islamicate geographical horizons, as reflected in the evolving "wonders" and geographical literature of the era. It also led to early contacts between the Islamic world and the peoples of the tropical Pacific Rim, a phenomenon that contributed, in time, to the formation of Islamicate societies in maritime Southeast Asia.Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations

Childbirth is a life changing experience for women, yet most women feel anxious with regard to this event. Research has shown that support from family or friends can help to reduce anxiety intrapartum, however, the standard procedure at most maternity centres in Indonesia is to not allow any person in the birthing room except midwives.
This study investigated the impact of the presence of a support person on the anxiety of women giving birth in Surabaya, Indonesia. The originality of this study is in trying to understand the whole picture about support during labour and childbirth by listening to women, their support persons, and midwives who care for them during this episode. Most studies have looked at perceptions only, however, it is important to hear from caregivers as well in order to understand the phenomenon fully. The findings provide the basis of recommendations about for Indonesian maternity care, particularly those within the Javanese culture.
A qualitative approach, specifically narrative inquiry, was used to answer the following research questions: How do childbearing women birthing in an Indonesian (Surabaya) maternity centre interpret the presence of a known, trusted support person and experience their impact on their birth-related anxiety? How do support persons experience their role during labour and childbirth? How do midwives experience the support during labour and childbirth? Twenty-one women, their support persons, and midwives who provide intrapartum care participated in this study. Data were collected from March to December 2016.
The major finding of this study was that the key factor in whether women felt supported or not during labour and childbirth depended on how well prepared, their support persons was. Well prepared, emotionally support persons were perceived as trustworthy by the women. When supported by this type of support person, the participant women had positive experiences of labour and childbirth. In contrast, unengaged support persons who were perceived as not trustworthy by the women. As a consequence of having this type of support person with them intrapartum, the women had a negative experience of labour and childbirth. Therefore, this study recommends preparation classes for potential support persons so they can provide effective support for women during labour and childbirth. This study has the potential to contribute to improvements in maternity care services for childbearing women, support persons, and midwives in Indonesia, particularly those within the Javanese culture, and other countries with a similar birthing culture.

This project is a diplomatic transcription and English translation of a passage from an 18-century manuscript that chronicles a remarkable Portuguese embassy to China (Macau). The embassy embarked from Lisbon in February 1752, sailing in a luxuriously outfitted ship (Nossa Senhora da Conceição e Lusitânia Grande), in convoy with a warship (Nossa Senhora das Brotas). The English translation is important because it makes the account accessible to scholars who lack familiarity with Portuguese.This voyage to China is remarkable in light of the long history of maritime loss by the Portuguese. Although the normal projected loss of life on this route was 20%, this journey was made without one death. Some of the most fascinating aspects of the journey include the following: a) how the intrepid crew of the Nossa Senhora (most of whom were novices) and the passengers dealt with bad weather at sea; b) the religious rites conducted during the voyage by Jesuit priests en route to the Far East missions, which the passengers firmly believed mitigated the dangers and were thus responsible for their safe journey; c) the intriguing political maneuvering between the Portuguese and Chinese in Macau; and d) the meticulous descriptions of the different cultures, peoples and places encountered on the journey.

Central subject of this dissertation is the Pair of doors, Lawon kori, dated circa 1560, from the collection of Asian Art at the Gallery of South Australia. The Lawon kori was made in Lampung, a South Sumatra society that embraced Islam in the sixteenth century and so it could be regarded as an example of Islamic art of Southeast Asia. This object was selected for research in order to examine the development of early Islamic art in the region and its relationship to the wider world of Islamic aesthetics. The second part of the thesis is an analysis of the Lawon kori that may be described as among the most important sculptural objects of early Islamic art to survive from Southeast Asia. The visual language of the Lawon kori demonstrably emerges from its anonymous maker's understanding of Islamic belief, which had become interwoven with the local aesthetic traditions of the Lampung community. Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) continue to decline due to habitat loss, poaching and conflict with humans. Yet, developing effective land conservation strategies for elephants is difficult because there is little information available on their foraging ecology, habitat use, movements and home range behaviors. Using the lead animal technique, 14 free-ranging, tame elephants at the Seblat Elephant Conservation Center (ECC) were observed for 4,496 hours to describe their foraging ecology and diet. The majority of their daily activity was feeding (82.2 ± 5.0%), followed by moving (9.5 ± 4.0 %), resting (6.6 ± 2.1%) and drinking (1.7 ± 0.6%), and individual activity budgets varied among individuals for all activities. At least 273 plant species belonging to 69 plant families were eaten by elephants and five plant families of Moraceae, Arecaceae, Fabaceae, Poaceae, and Euphorbiaceae were most commonly consumed. Elephants browsed more frequently than grazed, especially in the wet season. Levels of crude protein, calcium, phosphorus and gross energy in plants eaten by elephants in Seblat appeared adequate for meeting the nutritional requirements. Home range size of an adult female elephant in the SECC during 2007–2008, was 97.4 km2 for the MCP and 95.0 km2 for the 95% fixed kernel. There were no relationships between average monthly elephant home range sizes or movement distances with rainfall. Distances to rivers and ex-logging roads had little effect on elephant movements, but vegetation productivity, as measured by the Enhanced Vegetation Index, did affect elephant movements. We used resource selection and compositional analysis habitat ranking approaches to describe adult female elephant habitat use in the SECC. The elephant used medium canopy and open canopy forests more than expected; however, during the day closed canopy forests were used more than at night. Locating and capturing wild elephants in tropical rainforest environments are difficult and high-risk tasks. However, using tame elephants improves the search efficiency of finding wild elephants in dense forests and reduces risks to staff and target elephants. Use of experienced veterinarians and standing sedation techniques also greatly reduce the risks of elephant injury while immobilizing elephants.

With the trend of globalization, and the influence of non-governmental organizations and trans-national business, “international governance” and “international regimes” take the place of the traditional concept,” sovereignty.” In recent years, the ozone holes, greenhouse gases, and global warming are getting serious that people have to face them urgently. We can realize that international society has sensed “we only have one earth” through the Montreal Protocol (MP), the United Nations Framework on the Climate Change (UNFCC), and Kyoto Protocol (KP). In Asia, the Indonesia haze problem has been highly publicized recently. It is an environmental problem of single country however with the winnowing of monsoon, it becomes a regional problem. Heavy smog influences residents’ health, traffic, even tourism of Southeast Asian countries. Since the most important forum in this area, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) helps these countries to cope with haze problem, haze still happens each year without any improvement. Therefore, this article will combine two concepts,” international governance” and “international regimes’, to study the environmental problems. I will analyze how does UNFCC and KP, environmental cooperation landmarks, do reach? How do they consensus through numerous of barriers? What is their significance? Moreover, I will discuss the reasons why the haze problem cannot be resolved in many years. Is that the ASEAN way? Why would the Indonesian government refuse cooperation? In conclusion, I will sum up three ways to strengthen the capability of environmental governance.

The Islamization of Southeast Asia resulted in a distinct Malay-Muslim culture combining the universalist dimensions of a religious doctrine with a global reach and the cultural particularities of the region (language, local practices). Recent discoveries of new text material and archaeological evidence have pushed the emergence of this civilization back in time. Key elements of the chapter’s narrative are the emergence of Muslim states in the archipelago, and the active participation of diasporic groups from the Middle East, cosmopolitan figures from insular Southeast Asia, and mediators from South Asia in the further Islamization of maritime Southeast Asia. It also provides the argument for challenging the frequent dismissal of Islam in Indonesia as a ‘thin veneer’ over older religious deposits of indigenous or Indian origin, a misconception that was later corroborated by anthropological research in the 1980s. Throughout this time frame, the Indian Ocean continues to act as a conduit for the ‘global circulation of ideas’ and the emerge of sophisticated intellectual milieus in Sumatra and Java

A biomarker study is used to observe the quality level of a hydrocarbon compound deposited on the source rock. The presence of Botryococcus braunii algae, Pediastrum algae, and other lacustrine algae is thought to be a contributing factor to petroleum in lacustrine basins throughout Southeast Asia. Botryococcus braunii is a group of green algae and belongs to the Trebouxiophyceae class. The purpose of this study is to discuss the relationship between organic compounds and the type of source rock in the Central Sumatra Basin. The Central Sumatra Basin is a back-arc basin that develops along the edge of the Sunda shelf in Southeast Asia. This basin was formed by the moving of the submergence of the Indian Ocean plate relative to the North and infiltrates the Asian Continent plate. The data used in this study is taken from several literatures/references in biomarker analysis where qualitative analysis was carried out, such as: matching the readings of compounds contained in the chromatogram and associate them with classification in some existing literatures where the selection of organic components that had an effect on geological analysis was carried out. An explanation of some of the data obtained along with the chromatogram and geological analysis and interpretation can be seen in this paper. Some conclusions can be drawn from this research in the form of qualitative analysis of organic components to define the maturity of the hydrocarbon and suspect the source organic materials of the hydrocarbon in source rocks. The explanation of the main biomarkers that must be considered when analyzing oil or source rock samples is to know the characteristic of the hydrocarbon and correlate it with reaction during the deposition.

The three-way collision of the Indo-Australian, Eurasian and Pacific plates have resulted in Southeast Asia being the most tectonically complex region on Earth. This is particularly true for Offshore Aceh’s Andaman Sub-Basin, which has undergone complex late Eocene-Recent evolution. Despite a long history of hydrocarbon exploration and production, data scarcity in the offshore means that the Sub-Basin’s regional tectonics and structural framework have been poorly understood. Pre-1996 2D seismic data were low-fold and low-offset, however the 2019 PGS (NSMC3D) regional 3D survey imaged the entire Cenozoic sequence, enabling the delineation of a high-resolution tectonic framework for the first time. Integration of interpretations drawn from geophysical datasets with a 2019 biostratigraphy study has refined the ages of critical sequence boundaries and advanced the understanding of major structural elements. GEM™, the Geognostics Earth Model, has been used to place these interpretations in a regional tectonic and kinematic context using a series of high resolution plate animations. Andaman Sub-Basin formation initiated in response to the northward motion of India and collision with Eurasia, suturing the West Burma and Sibumasu Terranes through the middle-late Eocene. Continued northward motion of the Indo-Australian Plate resulted in further subduction along the Sunda Trench with associated oblique back-arc extension in present-day onshore and offshore Java and Sumatra. Concurrent rotation of Sundaland, with sinistral strike-slip motion along the Ranong and Khlong Mauri fault zones, resulted in the two rifting phases within the late Eocene (~40Ma) to early Oligocene in the Andaman Sub-Basin. Significant inversion events at 30Ma and 23Ma formed in response to dextral transpression associated with rotational extrusion of Indochina and Sundaland. Rapid subsidence followed the 30Ma inversion, resulting in a switch to post-rift sag and bathyal conditions during which turbidites infilled seabed topography. The onset of dextral strike slip between the West Burma Terrane along the Saigang fault system occurred at ~26Ma, causing transtension in the Andaman Sub-basin that terminated at 23Ma. At approximately 5Ma inversion and toe thrusts developed along the Sub-Basin’s southern margin due to uplift within the Barisan mountains. Refinement of the tectonic model, integrated with updated biostratigraphic and geochemical models, resulted in a revised tectono-stratigraphy for the Andaman Sub-Basin, which provides a predictive depositional model in which paleogeography and structural reactivation can be understood in a regional context.

Smart cities utilise technological and digital solutions to resolve urban issues, to enhance accessibility of services, and increase the quality of life (ASEAN, 2018). In 2018, Singapore leveraged its ASEAN presidency to initiate the ASEAN Smart Cities Network to develop a collaborative forum to improve translation of smart technologies between ASEAN cities by exploring potential synergies and complementarities, developing tailored action plans and sharing best practices. However, the translation, adoption and implementation of technologies across unique geographical, developmental and governance contexts vary substantially (Taeihagh, 2017). Without sufficiently understanding these variations, the translation process will likely fail. To understand these variations and their implications for city governance, we seek to unpack the different institutional forces that shape the adoption and implementation of such technologies. The paper aims therefore to identify key aspects of urban governance that guide the adoption and implementation of smart city technologies, by questioning (1) the drivers for smart city adoption, (2) the origin of policy ideas, (3) the factors hindering or facilitating their local translation, and (4) the impact of smart city development on city-level governance. This paper is part of an ongoing research on smart cities in Indonesia.

Online marketplace participation is a strategy for reducing barriers for female entrepreneurs who qualify as persons with disabilities (PWDs). Adapting a framework focused on causal interaction, entrepreneurial action, and the sociocultural context, we analyzed data using a mixed-methods approach from an entrepreneurial training program aimed at PWDs and implemented in three Southeast Asian nations, namely Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines, to evaluate whether online marketplace participation helps female PWDs generate better income and support their families. Findings indicate that female PWD entrepreneurs who participate in the online marketplace generate better earnings than those who do not, although heterogeneities by nature of the product/service in question are prevalent. The results also show that trainees are better able to meet their families’ financial needs. Despite the advantages, online marketplace participation among female PWD entrepreneurs is still low due to constraints regarding capital, technical know-how, and suitability of products. Hence, targeted intervention is necessary to enhance their participation.
